Outtake: Mayu's Arc Part 2
Mayu looked at the tall familiar door in front of her; she turned the door knob. It's unlocked? She pushed the door open, in front of her was the stairs but was covered in red liquid. Her parents were lying at the top of the stairs not moving.
"M-Mother… Father…" Mayu mumbled as she approached the motionless couple. Their eyes were wide open, beside her mother's corpses was written in blood: Be careful Mayu the Kousaka's are–
"The Kousaka… they did this?" Mayu thought aloud as tears slid down her face and dripped off her chin.
"Hey I think I heard something" an unknown voice came from the living room behind the staircase.
Their hitman is still here? Footsteps approached her from behind the stairs. She ran up the stairs and hid in her room. But still the footsteps approached…
There has to be something I can use around here! What?! Mayu looked around her room for a weapon to use. She spotted a long, metal cosplay sword in the corner of the room; she had used the sword the year before for a cosplay event in Akihabara.
She picked up the sword and turned the tip towards the door. She also spotted a fruit knife the maid had left after she peeled an apple for her; she slid the knife into her pocket just in case the sword didn't work and got back to position.
The side of this cosplay blade may be blunt, but the tip is sharp enough to stab someone.
The door opened, a man appeared holding a machete. Mayu shut her eyes and launched herself into the man. She felt the tip of the sword pierce right through the man's stomach; she looked behind the man to see another with a machete. His face was shocked with wide eyes.
Mayu let go of the sword and ran towards the last man. The man raised his arm with the machete ready to swing down. Mayu took the knife out of her pocket and threw it at the man's shoulder.
"Ahh! Why you…!" the man exclaimed. She was now right in front of the man, she pulled the knife out and stabbed the man's heart. She staggered back when she realised what she had done, her hands were red with blood of the two she had killed.
She crouched down and cover her ears and shut her eyes tightly, "What have I done? I've killed someone… No… it was rather him or me"
After another ten minutes, she got up and pulled the knife out of the man's chest and moved on to the sword.
Mayu entered the kitchen and spotted the dead maid covered in blood beside the fridge. She got out a knife sharpener from the cupboard and started to sharpen her sword and a few other knives while she mumbled, "The Kousaka's killed my family, now I shall do the same…"
The night was dark, the stars covered by the clouds, the full moon shined brightly above and was slowly engulfed by the clouds. Mayu walked down the street that seemed endless, carrying the cosplay blade on her back, her face was as expressionless as the paralysed girl's face.
Drip. Drip. Mayu felt water dripped upon her. Rain began to pour, Mayu hated rain, it was annoying, wet and stupid, she'd normally rush to shelter with annoyance. But at this moment, she didn't care, all she wanted was revenge.
After a whiles walk, she reached the Kousaka Mansion. Two butlers stood guard at the front gate. She equipped her sword and a knife and approached carefully to the guards.
The guard spotted Mayu and stopped her, "I'm sorry, but if you don't have a appoint-"
A knife was stabbed into his stomach, the last guard walked up to check on her. Before he knew it, a sword was launched into his stomach and pulled out.
"I'm sorry too, but I must get through…" Mayu took the house keys from the guard and continued through the gate and into the house.
Now where would the father and son be? Mayu searched room to room armed with her sword and four other knives. She had cleared around thirteen rooms in the mansion. Where can they be?
Mayu gave the next room a large kick, inside the room was a surprised face,
"You…"
"We meet again… Tanaki…"
"Why are you here? You're supposed to be dead" asked the scared boy.
"Birthday luck…" said Mayu as she threw a knife into Tanaki's shoulder.
"Now where is you father?" Mayu asked with annoyance, there was no answer; she threw another knife to the other shoulder.
"Where is he?" she asked again, and yet no answer, another to his right leg.
"P-Please… No more…"
"Where?!"
"H-He's in the office, the room at the end of the hallway…"
"Thank you…" the last knife was thrown to his other leg.
He screamed in pain, tears in his eyes. Mayu closed in onto her prey.
"Your pitiful face disgusts me, die!"
With that Mayu pierced her blade through his chest. Tanaki Kousaka was dead. What is left was his father. She moved closer and closer to the office. Click. Click.
What was that? She looked around; there was no one around her. My imagination? She kicked the door down and felt sharp pain enter her body. She had been shot at least thirty times, Mayu fell backwards. She looked at the old man equipped with two rifles.
"How…"
"You think I wouldn't notice after all that ruckus?"
"You…!"
Mayu's eyelids felt heavy. This is how it ends? This bastard's still alive…
She closed her eyes and entered a world of complete darkness.
Her eyelids suddenly felt light again, she opened them. Where am I? Who am I? I don't remember anything. Mayu… Mayu Yuuki… Is that my name?
She looked around, a build stood tall in front of her. A school? Is this where I go for school? She entered the school and found a full classroom, everyone was seated.
"Mayu, you're late" said the teacher that stood at the front.
"S-Sorry!" she apologised with a bow and sat down an empty desk.
"Now everyone turn to page ninety-eight, Oda Nobunaga is led Japan to…" the teacher continued.
Mayu barely kept her eyes open; the history lesson was long and boring. She eventually closed her eyes. Fuzzy images entered her mind, images of a man embracing her.
"No!" Mayu forced her eyes open, she realised that she had stood up and shouted. She was now the centre of attention in the class, many eyes was concentrated onto her.
"S-Sorry, I don't feel well, may I got to the infirmary?" she apologised once again.
"Uh… yes"
"Thank you, I'll be taking me leave now" she left the classroom and wondered down the hallway. Where is the infirmary? I go to this school right? Why don't I know where it is?"
As she ventured further down the hallway, she found the infirmary two rooms before the end of the hallway.
"Here it is" she exclaimed as she entered. She looked for the nurse in charge but no one was in the room.
"Where is the nurse?" she thought aloud walking towards the window.
"Kuroha! I love you!" Mayu heard a voice come from outside the courtyard; she looked out and spotted a male student shouting to a girl who stood at the top of the stairs.
"How sweet…" Mayu whispered, "If only I could be like her…"
As the couple approached each other, thump! A sound came from outside the door, Mayu turned to face the door immediately.
"See, I told you give me some of the books" said a male voice.
Another male voice replied, "Shut it will you?"
Mayu turned back to the couple, but they were no longer there. They had disappeared. Where'd they go? They couldn't have gone far.
Mayu scanned the whole courtyard for the young couple but they were nowhere to be seen.
The day after she saw the couple, she wanted to congratulate them, she searched and searched for the two, but it was as if they had disappeared from the face of the Earth.
In a blink of an eye, it has been a week since she saw them. During the nights, Mayu had dreamt of nothing but fuzzy images which she though was her missing memories. She remembered a girl in a hospital ward with beautiful red hair, but she does not recall her name. On the seventh night, she dreamt of something horrific, she was killed by a man that enraged her just by the sight of him. She became confused and frustrated,
I can't be dead right? I alive… I can't be… But I do have missing memories like what I did before I came to this school and the memories do fit into the gaps.
After another day, she pieced together the events that had occurred and came to the conclusion that she had died and this is the Afterlife. She was also angry at the fact that the she did not finish the job of killing the Kousaka's for killing her parents.
She did not let go of her hatred for Mafia groups but as the days came by, she hid in the daily loop lives of the other students. She later forced herself to forget the mafia groups and tried to live a normal life.
"This life isn't so bad, I wouldn't mind continuing it here" Mayu sat at her bedside and lay down and soon drifted to sleep.
When she woke, she was in a different room, a light pink coloured room not her dorm. Where am I now? More importantly who am I?
Mayu sighted a card bed her bed, a name and personal information was writing on the card: Mayu Yuuki.
This is an ID Card? Is this mine? I'm Mayu Yuuki? But still I don't recognise this place.
She checked outside the window and realised that there was no school in sight, she was in a city, most likely an apartment. Mayu turned back to the centre of the room and walked in circles.
"Just wher-" Mayu was terrified when she saw a black shadow with white eyes on the ceiling.
"What are yo-" before she could finish, the Shadow attempted to pounce onto her, she just managed to dodge the attack and ran for the door.
Mayu faced a door of three locks; she panicked as she unlocked them as fast as she could, while the Shadow slowly approached her. The locks were all unlocked; she rushed out and down the fire stairs unable to wait for the elevator.
The Shadow chased her out onto the streets, people ran about screaming at the sight of the Shadow.
No matter where Mayu was, she was chased down by the single Shadow. Why? Why me? Many thoughts ran through her mind as she thought of the reasons why a monster was onto her but nothing came to her mind. There was no reason behind this.
She eventually lost the Shadow and hid in an alleyway beside two crates. This reminds me of something, I was in an alleyway like this before too. But when? Why can't I remember anything?
She checked both sides of the alleyway for the Shadow but nothing was there. I guess I have to survive, at least until I figure out what is happening.
Mayu left the alleyway when she felt that the danger has passed. She walked cautiously down the path, checking every corner and every street for the Shadow.
"Ahh!" a scream came from another alleyway. Mayu rushed to take a look at what had happened. She saw two girls, one from a high school and one from an elementary school from what Mayu could tell. With them was a Shadow, they were cornered at the back of the alleyway.
"Kyaa!" Mayu charged toward the Shadow with a wooden stick. She knocked the Shadow to the side which allowed the two to pass through. The Shadow regained its balanced and closed in on Mayu. She was now frightened, she stuck the stick out and closed her eyes. She felt an impact on the stick, when she opened her eyes, she realised that the stick had pierced through the Shadow's body. It then slowly burned away.
Mayu kneeled onto the floor to absorb everything that had happened.
"T-Thank you Miss…" said the high school girl.
"It's alright"
A sharp pain reached Mayu's mind, she looked at her right arm, on her arm was a fairly deep cut. Mayu felt heavy, her head was light and she began to lose her balance.
"Mi-" Mayu last saw the two girls tried to reach for her.
She had passed out due to the pain.
When she came to, she was once again in an unknown room. I really need to stop doing this, waking up in a different place. She joked in her mind.
As she tried to sit up, a familiar pain shot up her head, she immediately checked her arm; it wound was wrapped neatly with a clean piece of cloth. She looked around the room, it was like a high school dorm, she looked for the door and spotted on her left.
The door opened slowly and the high school male student came in with a tray of bread and milk in his hands.
"You're awake, we covered up your wound but you shouldn't move around too much" said the boy as he placed the tray onto the bedside table.
Mayu nodded before asking, "So, where am I?"
"You're in the Aincrad High School. I'm Takumi, Takumi Miyabi" he introduced himself.
"I'm Mayu Yuuki" she replied.
"Oh, and thank you for saving my girlfriend and sister"
"Girlfriend?"
"Yeah, that high school girl"
"I see, that was your girlfriend"
"Yeah, they were going to get some supplies but they ran into trouble, so thank you for saving them"
"It's alright; I just did what anyone would do"
"No, no one would've done that, you didn't care about your own safety, you just saved them, so thank you" he said with a bow.
Mayu looked away with embarrassment.
"By the way, do you remember when we first met? It's almost three months ago?"
"We've met? Three months ago?"
"Yeah, in this school"
Mayu thought back really hard, but she could barely remember anything, "Sorry I can't remember"
"I wanted to ask if you're not a NPC anymore"
"NPC? Like a game?"
"Well when we first met we couldn't really hold a conversation, but now we can, you have also done something a NPC would never do so yeah..."
"I still don't see how I would be a NPC"
"You have being broken out of the loop of daily life"
"So what you're saying is that I was having a boring life until just recently?"
"Yep, once you come here from the Afterlife, you lose all your memories once again, you can only recover them over time after you break out of the loop"
"The how did we break out of the loop?"
"More people entered this world, causing it's storage to max out"
"Storage?"
"Yeah, this world can only hold so many people; those Shadows back there delete us for more storage"
"Deletes us?"
"It's pretty much the only way to die in this world, to get consumed by a Shadow. Since you can't suicide and get killed by another person"
"We can't simply die?"
"Yes, you'll understand eventually when your memories come back"
Mayu gave him an unsatisfying look before she ate her bread and drank her milk.
Mayu lived a normal school life with Takumi, Ayu and Ui while they hid from the Shadows for weeks.
"Mayu, help me with this box please" said Ayu.
"Sure" Mayu lifted the box up together with Ayu and moved it into the store room.
"That's the last of them" said Ayu as she let out a sigh.
"Teachers are really bossy even for an NPC"
"Yeah these have more functions than those in the Afterlife, but only if you interact with them"
"Sucks how we have to this still"
"Yeah but we have to hide from the Shadows"
"Where is Takumi anyway?"
"Oh, he said we'll get some food and drinks for tonight's meal"
"Will he be fine alone?'
"He'll be fine"
"We've always gone together"
"Well we have to do this activities every once and a while you know"
The two returned to the dorm to meet up with Ui and waited for Takumi's return. Time went by, but Takumi never returned. Ayu checked the clock: 5:00.
"He's taking too long, it's getting dark" said Ayu in a worried tone.
"We should look for him" Mayu suggested.
Ayu answered with a nod, "Ui stay here and don't open the door no matter what, okay?"
"Okay"
The Mayu and Ayu headed out to the convenience store Takumi should've been at.
"He's not here" said Mayu.
"Maybe he's in the way back?" suggested Ayu.
"Perhaps, let's search this are still, before we head back" said Mayu, hoping what she thought was wrong.
The two separated and searched for Takumi. Mayu searched the routes Takumi could've used to return to the dorm. He was nowhere to be found.
"Ahh!" a familiar scream reached Mayu's ears, from the park's direction.
Mayu ran with all her strength to the source of the scream. But when she arrived she saw a boy laying on the floor and a girl on the floor a few metres away from him. A Shadow was on top of the girl as it feasted upon her.
"A-Ayu… T-Takumi…"
The Shadow looked up to face her. She realised that the shape of the Shadow was different. A different kind of Shadow?
In high speeds the Shadow dashed in front of her, her heart pounded and pounded. She reacted with a kick, but the Shadow moved away from the attack. Mayu then entered a world of darkness once again.
Am I dead? I'm dead again? No, I don't want to, not yet!
She forced her eyes open, she was inside some kind of tube. She pushed open the lid of the tube and crawled out. Mayu was horrified at the sight of her hands. It was black, covered in a dark mist. I've become…
"I sensed your will to live, so I allowed you to live, but as a Shadow"
"Who's there?!"
"I am The Master"
"The Master? This form…"
"Don't worry about it, you may choose a form of your liking when you find a body you like. You will simply copy the appearance of the target"
"No, that's not the problem"
"Then what is? I've granted your wish to live as a new breed of Shadow"
"New breed?"
"Yes, you will now do my bidding in order to live, you will hunt down the people in the list I give you"
"Hunt down? As in…"
"Yes, you will kill them, you partner will be Suginami, he will give you the NEO Skill program to use"
A piece of paper appeared in front of Mayu, she grabbed the piece of paper with only one name on it: Ui Miyabi.
"This is…"
"I will give you one name for now, complete it and live or die"
Mayu stumped out of the room to find Suginami, who was in a dorm similar to the one she was in.
"Ah the new Shadow"
"I-I'm here for the NEO Skill"
"I know, come here"
Mayu took a step forward, "Here it goes"
Mayu felt power flow through her whole body.
Mayu arrived at the dorm after a few minutes of hesitation, she opened the door. Please forgive me…
