By God I guess I finally got off my ass and posted another one.

I'll just come out and say it. I haven't been writing much, of anything really. I've actually started writing stuff again though, and there will be another chapter out before the end of break. Probably on Christmas, so think of this as an early present.

Chapter 4: Come the Apocalypse

Predator Hunting Vessel- Orbiting Veta IX

Saeko did not think the predators, the Yautja as they called themselves, were purposefully cruel in any endeavor, least of all in training. Brutal? Yes, in there efficiency they could be called such, but never cruel. They sought perfection, but they were forthright and methodical about it. Furthermore, it made no sense that Saeko's 'mentor' would save her from Metinon, only to kill her via exhaustion.

She instead believed that the Yautja simply had very little knowledge of human limitations. That, coupled with the Counsel's demand that Saeko perform to rather demanding standard, meant that Saeko's training was the most brutal torment she had ever experienced.

Hence why she was lying on the cold metal floor of the ship's training room, covered in blood and sweat.

Across from her, Saeko's mentor didn't appear tired at all. The Yautja stood, arms crossed as if in displeasure, as he regarded her trembling form. Most would think he was angry at her performance, but after years of training under his hand Saeko had learned to read his tells.

He was proud of her, for she had marked him three times with her blade this match, all strikes which would have been death blows if her mentor had been but a heartbeat slower. She had lasted for five minutes and thirteen seconds against him, more than any of his previous pupils, all Yautja themselves could claim.

Yes, Saeko's apprenticeship had been brutal and torturous and bloody. But humans are adaptable. Saeko had reveled in the blood and pain of it all, and emerged a peerless warrior.

"You all but sleep with that blade of yours." Her mentor's deep rumblings shattered Saeko's reverie "It hinders you."

After her three years upon this vessel, Saeko was fluent in the Yautja language. They spoke differently than humans did. All statements, few questions. To ask another warrior a question was to label oneself as inferior to the other, place that one's opinion as higher than your own. At first, Saeko found this custom confusing and difficult to grasp. Now, she even dreamed in their tongue.

If her mentor had been a human, he might have said something like: 'I don't understand why you insist upon using that sword. You do realize that if you employed other weapons as well you would be even stronger?'

Saeko found that she much preferred the predators way of speech over her own species's.

"I have marked you three times with this blade." She replied. Her mentor nodded. He was not pleased with her devotion to the katana, but she thought he understood it, in one form or another, and her prowess was undeniable. She smirked in satisfaction as he let the topic drop.

After a moment of silence in which Saeko rose and began cleaning her blade. Her mentor spoke again. "The Council gives us rights to a new hunting ground. The Hard-meat has recently arrived on a human world; they will be aggressive. And the Soft-meat will defend their land fiercely." Saeko grinned at this, they were finally going hunting.

"The Elders do not often give such hunting grounds to lone warriors." She replied.

Her mentor grunted, "We will share the rights with a small hunting pack." But he did not seem concerned with the prospect of sharing his trophies "They will seek glory overmuch." Ah.

Her mentor expected the other clan to take foolish risks and quickly annihilate themselves, probably by attempting to kill the queen. After the other predators died the planet would be left to Saeko and her mentor...

Saeko was certain that even a year ago she would have faced the idea of hunting with apprehension. The idea of killing her own species would have given her pause at the very least, as her ingrained morals fought with her darker desires. But now, she could only wait in muted excitement. She would finally have a chance to test her skills, to measure how far she had come in the last five years. Before, Saeko had been bested by three aliens. She yearned to see how many she could overcome this time.

"Make ready for our arrival."
Saeko clicked her tongue in acknowledgment.

A short time later found Saeko standing near the prow of the ship. As often as possible, she liked to be there when the vessel went into warp.

She would place her hand on the metal supports of the ship and gaze out the glass cover of the cockpit as space rushed passed them faster than the speed of light. It wasn't like she could see anything when the ship was traveling at relativistic speeds, but she enjoyed the sensation of movement that rumbled through the durasteel hull.

Her mentor allowed Saeko this idiosyncrasy, provided she had no other tasks to accomplish.

All the same, as the predator vessel drew closer to their destination, Saeko found it difficult to contain her excitement. Her first hunt approached. And her first kill.

Her first kill as a Predator.
Saeko very much enjoyed that distinction.

Eios
Getting across the river, Rei found, was much easier said than done.

For one thing, the local military, or perhaps the mafia, had destroyed both bridges across the water. The current ran higher and faster than usual as well, as if at least one of the damns upriver had been opened.

Rei sat back from the windows edge, far enough away that she couldn't be seen from the ground, and watched the water rush past. She thought it was just a little bit funny, that the only thing keeping the survivors safe from the aliens, the river, also barred the rest of the city from safety.

Takashi had ventured out in the small hours of the morning to get them some supplies. "He's the one most likely to make it back alive," Shizuka had said. And after what Rei saw yesterday, she could believe the buxom scientist...

His eyes had burned like stars, yesterday. They had shown and seethed like molten gold and they had not been human in the slightest.

Rei bit her lip. He had seemed so normal when she first talked to him. He was just another awkward guy.

But looking back on their short conversation, Rei remembered all of his little tells which she had brushed off as nervous habits. When they had talked, Takashi had been trying oh so desperately to appear normal, his every action planned and choreographed.

She just hadn't noticed it at the time.

After the encounter with the alien, Takashi hadn't wasted any more energy trying to appear human. His entire bearing had changed, his movements taking on the unconscious grace of a monster. Only when they had arrived at the apartment building had Takashi returned to some semblance of normal.

Then the door to the apartment eased open slowly, signaling Takashi's return. Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. "How'd it go?" Shizuka asked quietly.

"I survived." Was his only response. When Rei walked into the room he tossed three backpacks and several cases of water and synthetic foods onto the floor. "This is what I found. And this," A standard issue Marine corps rifle joined the pile. The four survivors gathered around their meager supplies.

After Takashi sat down, Alice curled up his lap like a cat and promptly fell asleep. He looked down at her in surprise for a moment, before a small weak smile spread across his face.

"I wanted to save her from this." He said quietly, "She was... my inspiration. I even made a deal with Weyland-Yutani to keep her safe. But it looks like I still failed in the end."

It was the most he'd said since they arrived at the apartment building, Rei noted.

"Sometimes we do all we can," Rei replied, "and it still isn't enough..." She had her own experiences to draw from here. She remembered more than one time when she tried to accomplish something with her whole being only to fail in the end. It was one of the hazards of growing up with her parents.

Takashi only nodded. "Any plans to get across the river?"

Rei sighed, "Only that the spaceport is looking awfully good right now." She said wryly. "We have about the same chance of getting off world as we do getting to the North district.

With the sun now completely above the horizon, the three survivors could see the extent of the carnage. On the southern part of the city, only Eios Spaceport remained untouched. Fierce defense by the army and the marines had held critical building for the first day while the aliens ransacked the rest of the city.

They would fall. Takashi gave them another three days before the newly hatched aliens overran the defenses and killed the refugees hiding there. Then the queen would turn her attention to the North.

"The spaceport is a deathtrap."

Rei nodded in mute sadness, she could read the writing on the wall too. "It's like an insect lamp, drawing people in with the promise of safety. But that doesn't make it look any less appealing."

"We should still try and go there..." Both the teens looked as Shizuka in surprise. "I mean, Takashi, your 'friend' is there. And we need food and supplies as well."

"Friend?"

Takashi glanced away for a moment. For some reason Rei felt like he was going to same something that she didn't want to hear. "My alien."

For a moment, Rei couldn't even speak. "Y-y-y-your alien?! You brought one of those things onto my planet? What the hell were you thinking?!"

He frowned. "She wouldn't have been a problem-"

"She? It's an alien! You know, one of the things currently shredding all of the innocent people out there?"

Takashi glared at her, and Rei sputtered out. "She" enunciating very clearly, "is one of the two reasons why I'm even alive right now. I have her completely under control." Before Rei could ask, "Yes! I can talk to them. I can command them. I can fucking hear them inside of my skull! Got it?"

"What the hell are you talking-!"

"That was the devil's bargain I made with Weyland-Yutani." He said. "My life signed over, so she" He gestured at Alice, "could live out hers."

Shizuka looked at the floor, shamefaced as she clutched at her arm.

Rei looked back and forth between the two of them. "Where the hell did you two come from?"

Takashi smirked, it was an expression without humor. "Hell." He said. Shizuka nodded mutely at that.

They sat in silence for a while, what could Rei add to that? Then Takashi nodded to himself. "For the next day we should stay out of sight. Plan out our destination, then we'll move."

He spoke with the assurance of a veteran, but Rei couldn't help but question his logic. "Shouldn't we go now, while there are fewer aliens? Before... before there are more..."

Takashi shook his head. "Tomorrow, most of the aliens in the city will retreat to the queen, bringing as many hosts as they can gather. That's the best time, the only time we'll be completely safe. That 'lull' happens every time they start up a new hive." He gave a wry smile. "We used to call it the eye of the storm."

"A moment of calm, but surrounded by the tempest on all sides." Rei looked back out the window. "So what do we do until then?"

"We plan, we rest, and then we move fast as hell." He replied. "How do we cross the river?"

Rei sighed. "I'm not even sure we can..."

"Talk to me," He murmured.

"What?"

"Talk to me. Tell me everything about the river."

Rei blinked once, twice. "It's running high."

"Go on."

"There are dams upstream. We use them for hydro-electric generators, but they also function as locks to hold back the water during the rainy season when the rivers would flood otherwise. When the rains stop we open the damns to keep the river level from dropping for the farmers..." She paused, "The river's running too high. Someone must have opened the gates on at least one of the dams." She bit her thumb as she ordered her thoughts. "The current will be strong and fast. So swimming and fording are out, boats... would have been an option, but since someone blew up the bridges we'll just be dashed against the concrete until we die.

"And somehow I doubt the water level will fall by tomorrow."

Rei nodded in agreement. "We'd need a hovercraft. That's the only way I can think of to get across. Something that can get us over the water. But everything that could cross the river is either on the other side already, or in the spaceport." She paused "Oh, and it would need to be one powerful enough to get us above the rooftops, or else the xenomorphs can still get to us."

Takashi looked out the window for a moment. "What if we checked the city's central hospital?"

Rei blinked. "That might work."

So, for the rest of the day, the group planned and waited. They ate some of Takashi's supplies, and watched as the day slowly descended into night.

For her part, Rei finally discovered why war veterans always said: "The worst part is the waiting." The dreadful mix of boredom and fear wore on her nerves like a cheese grater as the hours slowly ticked by. Rei decided that she really couldn't blame Takashi and Alice for being a bit off their rocker, Rei'd go insane as well if she was constantly subjected to this endless, mind numbing, waiting...

But come morning, they moved.

When dawn broke across the sky the entire group was nearly running down the stairs and out the door, and true to Takashi words, the city was silent. The aliens had returned to their itinerant hive, and the humans were hiding behind closed door and loaded rifles. For intents and purposes, the city belonged to Takashi and his group.

Suffice it to say that they traveled quickly and without hesitation down the abandoned streets and made their way quickly to the hulking edifice of Ter's central hospital.

They were around two blocks away from the building when Takashi froze in his tracks, Shizuka and Rei (with Alice on her back) actually kept moving for a few paces before they realized that Komuro had stopped behind them.

Shizuka glanced back in concern, "Komuro?"

He glanced towards the rooftops, "Get behind me." Slowly, he reached behind his back and brought his marine corps rifle to up to a ready position.

"Takashi?"

"Get behind me!" He shouted. Then, without pause, he fired into the air.

Rei spun towards his target, even as she back peddled furiously, just in time to see the first rounds impact a Xenomorph leaping from the rooftop. Takashi's shots took the alien center mass, impacting with enough force to knock the monster backwards in the air.

With deadly precision Takashi pumped the rest of his clip into the alien's head as it fell, acidic blood splattering across the pavement.

"Go to hell you son of a bitch!"

Spinning he unloaded the under mounted grenade into a second Alien as it flew at him from the ally way on the other side of the street. He finished it off with the last of his clip.

Click. clatter.

Takashi allowed himself a satisfied grin at a job well done. And then he was swept of his feet as the third Xenomorph launched itself from the shadows.

Takashi hit the ground cursing, the alien half a second behind. It landed above him, razor sharp claws punching into the asphalt on either side of his head. It hissed with glee.

'Diiiieeeee!'

In the moment, Takashi didn't even registered it on a conscious level.

'STOP!'

Perhaps he should have.

'!?'

He pushed (but not with his hands, hands far too weak), and he came up against a wall of steel. With rending force he tore the barrier asunder, tore the center to pieces, tore the being to shreds (as it would have shredded him).

The alien shuddered. It's frame rippled like a building on the verge of collapse-

'Begone!'

-and then it slowly toppled over (but not it, only it's body), impacting the ground with a hollow thud.

It was only then, when his thoughts began to settle and his emotions came back under his control, that Takashi realized what he had just done.

He rose to a sitting position slowly, his heart pounding as his breath came in short bursts. A sharp pain lanced through his forehead, a reminder of his unnatural act. With jerky, uncoordinated, motions, Takashi forced himself to his feet, and looked the rest of the group in the eye.

Rei had a look of shock upon her face, Alice was smiling happily with a shout of "Go Oniisan!" but Shizuka regarded him with a mix of worry and awe.

He didn't know which he found the most disturbing.

Takashi shook out his arms which tingled as if they had fallen asleep. "Let's go." He said "We need to get to the hospital."

That was another lesson he had learned from his time as a leader: When the shit hit the fan, as it always did, keep moving. Don't give people the time to process their losses and their gains. Get to a safe place, don't give yourself, or anyone else, time to relax when you need to be on the move.

Hopefully, that truth would still apply here.

"I thought you said there wouldn't be any aliens on the streets!" Rei hissed. She'd caught up to him a moment after he'd started moving. "Where the hell did they come from?"

Takashi shook his head. "Less aliens, as in 'few enough that we actually stand a chance'." He cleared his throat and increased his pace. "And that's why we need to move. The last thing I need is an entire horde of xenos jumping us while we're out in the open."

"Then why the hell-"

"Hold this." Takashi shoved the, now empty, rifle into Rei's hands. " Your father's the police chief right? He put you through basic?"

Rei nodded in surprise.

"There's one grenade left; don't waste it."

Rei slung the strap over her shoulder with practiced ease, even as she looked at Takashi strangely."You're just giving this to me?"

"I'm a horrible shot."

His answer drew a half hysteric giggled from Rei's lips before her outrage caught up a moment later. "Then why the hell were you using it!" Though, in truth, she was only a little angry at him. He had just saved their lives. "And if you say 'pride' then I'll unload the last grenade at you."

Takashi cocked his thumb back towards the alien corpses with a wry smile, "Would you have noticed them in time?"

She sighed dramatically. "No, probably not." A pause "But why give me this now then? Shouldn't you just keep it if you'll be able to tell where the monsters are coming from."

He shook his head, "I'll notice them faster next time, so you'll have time to get ready. Besides, knowing where they are won't do us any good if I miss the shot." Rei nodded, it made sense. And she was a damn good shot after all, even if Takashi didn't know that yet.

Then Takashi turned his smoldering amber eyes upon her. "I'm putting our lives in your hands, Rei. Don't drop us."

Rei almost stumbled at his declaration.

Resettling the rifle into a ready grip, Rei met Takashi's gaze with determination. "I won't." It wasn't a promise, Rei's statement was a stone cold fact. And Rei could tell that Takashi knew it too.

The two teens shared a small smile. And for a bit the only sound was the patter of their feet upon the pavement as the whole group focused on getting to the hospital in one piece.

When they finally reached the building's hulking doors, Rei nearly cried. Takashi placed a hand on her shoulder, "Stay sharp." He murmured, "Shizuka, help me get the doors open."

The blond scientist nodded a set Alice back on the ground. A moment later, and the group was inside. They barricaded the large glass doors as best they could before getting up to a higher floor.

Shizuka glanced around the halls warily "Takashi?"

He shrugged, "Empty. Of aliens at least."

"So you can sense them?" Shizuka took a breath, "I mean, what exactly... happened back there Takashi?"

"Why do you want to know?" Then he sighed, "Sorry. I-" A shrug. "It's complicated, I promise to explain it later." Once he worked it all out for himself that is.

"Let's find the hover-pad then."

Shizuka shook her head at Rei's statement and took a steadying breath. "Supplies first. There has to be at least some medicine left, and a hospital this big will have other necessities as well. Water, a certain amount of food, bandages. Antibiotics."

Takashi nodded "Things we'll need."

"Plus, it wouldn't hurt to bring a 'gift' to our friends across the river right?" Shizuka nodded brightly. "We wouldn't want to be turned away."

"Ah," Rei raised her hand slowly, "That probably won't be an issue."

"Oh?"

"I'm... ninety percent sure that it's my mom running things over there. The north side of the city is kinda 'her territory' after all. And only she'd have the influence to get the bridges destroyed so quickly."

Takashi glanced at her. "Territory?"

"Yeah..." She began fiddling with her rifle, "My mom's sort of, you know... a mob boss."

Shizuka hid a small smile behind her hand. "And your father is the city's police chief? Oh that sounds like something right out of a TV drama!"

Rei giggled. "It made for some very interesting dinners."

"Please focus." Takashi cut it, "You can get all the details out of Rei later." He was used to this bubbly side of Shizuka now, though he never would have guessed that the -mostly- serious woman who had saved his life could be so childish.

The two women nodded as he brought them back to reality, even Alice added her own opinion.

"Go Oniisan!"

Takashi shook his head wryly, "Right." He said. "We're not splitting up. Shizuka, find out where the important stuff is. We'll take as much as we can carry before heading to the Helipad."

Shizuka nodded "This way!"

The hospital was a gold mine of supplies, and they quickly found more than they could fit into their backpacks. They'd even found a another abandoned rifle and a few spare clips. On Takashi's call, they decided not to prioritize, but rather, to grab what they could quickly and efficiently.

"We have a limited amount of time. Argue about the importance of water versus rubbing alcohol once we're safe." He'd said, and in less than half an hour the group was on the rooftop hover-pad, looking at the last remaining transport.

The hospital had obviously been evacuated very quickly after the crash, and once again Rei pointed to the actions of her mother, the building was only about half a mile south of the river after all, and it showed signs of hasty relocation. While the building would usually have at least half a dozen hover cars to serve as fast action ambulances, now only one remained.

One hover car, left behind because it was broken.

"Anyone here a mechanic." Rei said.

The group had spent a few moments just staring at the busted vehicle. They'd even found the keys during their search for supplies, but one glance showed that the hover car was completely useless. It's hood was up, and parts of the engine lay in front of the vehicle.

Takashi moved forward with a frown, "Maybe."

Three sets of eyes snapped to the young man. "You can fix it?" Rei asked.

He shrugged. "Like I said, maybe." It depended on what was broken. He'd had a rather hands on learning environment when he'd first learned to repair different vehicles. Either he and his group could figure out what the problem is and make a quick and dirty repair, or they had to keep moving. Hover cars were the worst. If the flight system was broken then Takashi had no chance in hell of getting it airborne.

"Keep away from the edges of the roof." And with that last order, Takashi got to work. He quickly checked over the parts on the rooftop before moving on to look at the rest of the engine.

Meanwhile, Rei and Shizuka fidgeted silently while they waited and Alice began playing with a piece of twine she'd kept in her pocket for some odd reason.

It felt like hours later when Takashi finally stood up and stepped away from the engine. "I can patch it up." He said without preamble. "But I'll need parts to do it."

Rei grimaced, "Parts we don't have right?" Takashi nodded. The brunette sighed, "Let's see if we can't find a working computer then. There's got to be at least one mechanic shop in the area."

Luckily, the internet still functioned and the power grid hadn't completely failed yet. Rei quickly picked out a location that 'should' have the things Takashi needed- "Look, it's not like I'm an expert about stuff alright? This is the closest mechanic shop that has anything to do with hover cars, and the website says '24 hour repairs', so let's just cross our fingers and get over their already."

Closest meant just over a block away. They reached the building quickly and, seeing as the front was locked tight and the glass windows covered with metal grates, Takashi bashed open the back door to let them in.

"I need some coil wires and-" Clatter!

The entire group spun around in an instant, guns raised. In the corner, a small metal disk was wobbling around before it finally settled on the floor.

"Takashi?"

"Nothing." He glanced warily around the cluttered garage. "But something is in here."

Rei swept her aim in a slow arc. "As long as it's not an alien..."

clink.

They spun again, they collective gazes coming to rest upon the chassis of an old car as more soft sounds came from behind it. As Rei watched she swore she saw a flash of pink through its windows. Then the noises suddenly stopped, but nothing emerged from around the sides of the vehicle, and, with where the car was situated, nothing could move out from behind it without Rei seeing it.

"What do you think Takashi?"

"...Better safe than sorry."

"Right," They both braced their rifles in firing position.

"On three. One, two-"

"Wait!" A girl's voice shouted. "Don't shoot! I'll- I'll come out now okay?" Her voice broke a little, "Just- just..."

A small figure appeared from around the side of the car. Wearing a rather clean set of mechanic coveralls and a pair a or rectangular glasses, a teenage girl with pick hair moved into view with her hands in the air.

Rei let out a choked laugh and lowered her rifle as the young woman appeared. It wasn't like she cut an intimidating figure after all. But Takashi kept his rifle trained on her form.

His gaze flicked back around the room for an instant. "Is there anyone else here?"

The girl was apparently used to being held at gun point, because she scoffed at the question. "Yeah, 'hello' to you to, asshole."

"Answer the question, or I'll shoot you in the foot."

"Takashi!"

"Answer the question."

"Look, if there was anyone else here with me, we'd be long gone, okay? Like you just proved with your senseless act of vandalism, this place isn't exactly fort Knox."

Takashi stared at her for a moment more before lowering his weapon with a sigh. "Name's Takashi. My friends are Rei, Shizuka, and Alice." He gestured to each in turn.

She nodded slowly, "Saya. I run this place." She glanced around with a frown. "Or I did. Not like it matters now."

Takashi cocked an eyebrow, but he decided not to questions her age.

Rei, on the other hand, pounced on Saya's statement. "Say, can you fix a high powered hover-car?"

Saya looked at her in surprise.

The group, plus one pick haired and blisteringly sarcastic mechanic, was back on the hospital roof in no time flat. Saya looked over the gutted hover-car. "Give me an hour." She said. "And we'll be out of this hell hole."

The diminutive mechanic quickly got to work and spared only blistering glares for anyone who disturbed her. The rest of the group gathered in a small circle a few meters away and amused themselves quietly. Shizuka and Alice played a bastardized version of pati-cake. Rei and Takashi talked in low tones, swapping stories of happier days. Rei giggled softly.

And so, the hour passed quickly, and before they knew it Saya called them over to the newly repaired hover-car.

"It's a patch job." She said, "If we weren't in this situation, I'd shoot the mechanic who gave me my car back in this condition."

"Will it fly?"

She snorted. "Of course it will. I'm a genius."

"That's all I ask."

"Umm... Takashi?"

He turned. "Hm?" Rei stood in the center of the roof. Raising one hand, she pointed up at the sky.

At first glance, it looked like a meteor storm was had descended upon the city. All across the streets, fiery objects were crashing into the ground, setting off a cacophony of explosions and sirens.

It was only when one of those objects smashed into the ground right in front of the hospital that Takashi saw that the 'meteorites' were coffin sized metal capsules. He watched mutely as one of the panels blew out, and a large, armored figure stepped onto the worlds soil.

"Takashi...?"

"Everybody into the hover car." He stated, "We're getting out of here now."

The moved, and within half a minute the hover car lifted off the roof and began climbing into the sky. They burned energy cells to gain speed and for a moment it almost looked like they'd make it over the river, and be safe. Or at least, safer.

But then a barrage of plasma clipped the undercarriage, and suddenly they were spiraling out of control.

"Aw FUUUUUCK! We're going down!"

"No shit Sherlock!"

"Pull UP! And TURN DAMNIT! Don't land IN the water!"

The metal craft collided with the asphalt and bouncing like a stone. It skidded across the pavement, the metal twisting as the engine burst into flames. With a shudder, Takashi kicked the door out of its frame and pulled the rest of his friends out of the wreckage.

They'd only made it three blocks. The river was just a short distance in front of them.

With the whole group standing, slightly bruised and bloodied, on the pavement, Takashi looked to the sky as yet more drop pods burned through the atmosphere. He glanced over at Rei, who stood and gazed confusedly at the sky. "This," He said, "this, is hell."

"Let's move."
