A/N: REWRITTEN
I had the house to myself once again. My parents were out on a date...weird I know... Allison went out to the woods with Scott, doing god knows what. And Gerard disappeared.
I was laying down in bed when I heard the doorbell ring.
Ugh! I pulled myself up and walked to the front door. Opening it revealed Alex and his wife Julie.
I squealed and tackled him with a bear hug. He stumbled back but caught me with a laugh.
"What are you doing here?" I asked once I let him go to hug Julie.
"What? Can't I come and see my favourite niece?" I laughed.
Alex, Julie and I went to a coffee shop called Billy's. Once we ordered I began to talk.
"A lot has happened recently," I told them. "I fell in love with another werewolf, his name is Derek." I chuckled as my eyes turned glassy. "I'm scared now that Gerard is back. He declared war on all werewolves now that Kate is dead."
"Is Derek the only werewolf in town?" Julie asked. I shook my head.
"No. There's Scott–Allison's boyfriend. Cassie–my best friend. Derek is in the middle of making a pack," I shrugged. "All I want to do is protect them and I feel like the only way I can do that would be to avoid them."
"Don't avoid them," Alex said.
"I don't want them getting hurt because of me."
Before Alex could say anything our food came.
We talked about the most random things. I told him a bit more about my friends. Julie told me she took an interest in cooking and now she runs a business.
I placed my phone on the table. "I want some coffee. Do you want anything?" I asked.
"No, we're fine," he shook his head.
I nodded and went to order myself another coffee. It took about a minute and a half before I returned to the table.
I heard the band play My Number by Foals. "I love this song," I smiled. Some young female was singing it.
You don't have my number
We don't need each other now
We don't need the city, the creed or the culture now...
"So, where'd you guys come back from?" I asked.
"Colorado," Julie answered. "That's where we're living now. It's so beautiful." I nodded, smiling.
"I'll be back," Alex said.
"Ah, the wise words from terminator," I smirked. He rolled his eyes playfully and left the table.
"So, how far along are you?" I asked, pointing to her swollen stomach.
"About six months," she smiled.
I laughed. "I can't wait to see my little cousin!"
About a minute later I heard the front door of the coffee shop open and looked up. I saw Allison, Scott, Stiles, Cassie and Derek.
Now the wolf is knocking at my door
Bang-bangin' ask for more...
Speaking of wolves... "Hey, what are you guys doing here?" I asked.
"What do you mean? You messaged us," Allison told me, showing the message on her phone. I frowned.
"I–"
"It was me," Alex cut me off, "I hijacked your phone when you went for some coffee."
"But why?" I asked, still frowning.
"I wanted to get to know them," he shrugged. I nodded slowly.
"Okay, well, that's Allison, which you already know," I said. "There's Scott, Stiles, Cassie and Derek." I guestured to the five of them. "Guys, this is my biological uncle, Alex, and his wife Julie."
They all sat around the table and started talking about random things. Alex and Derek were talking about basketball, it almost made me smile. My sister and best friend were chatting to Julie about her baby. Scott and Stiles pitched in both conversations.
Julie jumped a little making my eyes widen and everyone stopped talking.
"He just kicked," she mumbled, trying to get in a comfortable position.
"Can I feel it?" I asked looking at the pregnant woman next to me.
"Of course you can, Maddie," she smiled.
I placed my small hand on her stomach. When I felt a tiny kick against my palm I let out a small laugh.
"So, how long are you guys staying?" I asked, looking between Julie and Alex.
"A couple months maybe," he shrugged.
"So are you a witch?" Stiles asked Alex, whispering the word 'witch'.
"Warlock, actually," he corrected.
"So that's why you both smell different," Cassie said to herself.
My eyes widened, "I smell?! Why didn't you tell me? What do I smell like?"
"You smell sweet," Derek commented, "kind of like cotton candy."
I blushed but quickly recovered by flipping my hair over my shoulder dramatically. "Why thank you," I smirked. I heard someone chuckle. "Are there any other Devereux's?" I quizzed Alex, changing back to the other topic.
"Most of our family were burned not too far from here," he replied.
"You mean, like witch trials?" Stiles asked, slightly twitching.
"Sort of," Alex said. "I was almost caught but Julie found me."
"Are you one too?" Scott asked her.
Julie chuckled. "No, I came from a family of witch hunters. I was going to kill him but there was something about him that made me want to save him so I did." She and my uncle held hands.
I bit my lip, thinking about how that easily resembled Derek and I. Him as Alex and myself as Julie. Maybe we could work out... I looked up and saw Derek looking at me with a soft gaze.
Giving him a weak smile I turned back to Alex.
"What do you know about Michael?" I questioned.
I saw him visibly tense. "How do you know about him?"
"Who's Michael? Is he another witch? Is he bad?" Cassie demanded to know.
I ignored her. "Miranda left me a box in a safe at the bank. There was a journal in it from before she, um..." I shook my head, "she said something about Michael wanting to turn her."
"Michael was an alpha. My mother put a curse on him to stop him from making any betas, so if he did try, they would die. He grew angry and started attacking innocent people. Years later, he found a witch and got her to lift the curse. He wanted to bite Miranda and also wanted you, and Isobel at the time. Every few generations there are powerful witches born. Michael definitely thought it was you or Isobel. He threatened Miranda, saying he wouldn't stop hurting the people she loved until he got what he wanted," Alex explained.
"That's why Jordan put me up for adoption," I concluded. It all made sense now. "So I would be protected."
"Did Miranda turn into a werewolf?" Allison asked.
"No, she didn't make it," I said with a small voice.
"Where is Michael now?" Derek spoke up.
"Dead."
"Daddy!" My fourteen year old self yelled, running through the woods, trying to get back home. There was someone chasing after me.
I saw my house coming in to the view. "Daddy!" He came running out of the house with a group of men.
My arm was grabbed and I was pulled back.
"Please let me go," I whimpered.
"You're mother made a promise," the man whispered in my ear with a growl at the end.
"I just want her!" He then yelled,
"You can't have her, Michael," Dad yelled back.
The man roared and all the hunters aimed their guns at his chest through mine and head.
"I haven't done anything wrong," I was close to crying.
Thinking he was going to kill me, I clenched my eyes shut. I heard a gun shot and flinched. The gripped on my forearm loosened and then disappeared.
I opened my eye saw the stranger was on the ground. Dead. Shot in the head.
My heart was racing. I always thought that was a dream but now I know it wasn't.
"Madison," I heard Alex's voice. Frowning, I looked at him.
"Sorry, what did you say?" I asked
I saw Alex tense up and I looked confused. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"Your eyes glowed purple," he answered. It was sounded like he was terrified. Why would my eyes glow purple?! "Um, we should go." He glanced to Julie who nodded.
"It was nice meeting you guys," Julie smiled.
"I'll see you tomorrow?" I said, but it came out as a question.
"Yeah, bye." Then they left.
"I should be getting home too," Cassie announced. Stiles, Scott and Allison agreed.
I nodded and told my sister I would see her at home. Then it left Derek and myself.
"Did you, uh, see my eyes change?" I asked, frowning.
"Yeah," he nodded, "don't worry, you'll be okay." I gave him a tiny smile.
"Did you know my when we bumped into each other at the shops, it wasn't the first time we met?" He changed to subject.
"What do you mean?" I asked as we began walking out of Billies.
Derek smiled, "I remember my parents being friends with a witch named Miranda, your mother. My mother told me she gave birth to a 'beautiful baby girl'. We went to see her and my mother held you in her arms, but you looked straight into my eyes and I swear I saw you smile at me. That's when I knew you were my mate."
"Are you sure I'm worth taking the risk?" I questioned, getting inside his car. "Things around here aren't going to get better anytime soon."
He turned in his seat and cupped both sides of my face. "Yes. Yes, you are worth it."
I sat down at the bleaches with Natalie, waiting for the lacrosse practise to commence.
"So, why all the sudden interest in lacrosse? About a month ago you didn't know what it was," I asked, chuckling. "Is it the hot, sweaty, muscly guys clashing into each other?"
"Yeah, it is," she said laughing, causing me to laugh as well.
The lacrosse team came running out on to the field, and as per-usual Stiles is sitting on the bench.
"Have you talked to Ashley yet?" Natalie asked.
I groaned. "No, I haven't," I responded. "Do you think I was too harsh on her?"
"Well, you have been ignoring her since you yelled at her."
I rubbed my face then saw Scott knocking some players to the ground. Was he sniffing them?!
My phone rang and the caller ID was Alex.
"I need to take this," I told Natalie.
I stood up and walked down the bleaches.
"Hey," I answered my phone.
"Hey, have you got some time to talk?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. Have you gotten any bad symptoms since last night?"
I frowned, "I had a bit of a headache before I went to bed...does that count?"
"It might."
"Alex, what's going on?"
"Nothing... Just call me if the headache comes back." My jaw dropped. He hung up on me!
I saw Sheriff Stilinski walk over to Coach Finstock. They spoke about something and then Isaac got taken off the field. That can't be good.
I sat down next to Ashley in French class. She honestly looked shocked that I chose to sit next to her.
"I'm sorry," I blurted out.
"I'm sorry too," she said, tears brimming in her eyes. "I know that I shouldn't of said anything at all, it was my place to. I never wanted to hurt you. You're one of my best friends." The tears fell down her face.
I smiled and pulled Ashley in her a hug. "Friends?" She asked.
"Friends," I confirmed.
"Awww," we heard behind us. Natalie and Cassie were sitting there, watching the two of us.
The four of us laughed...only to be told to be quiet by the teacher.
Cassie raised her hand. "Yes, Miss Martin?" Ms Morell asked.
"Can I go pee?"
"No, not until you can say it in french," she shook her head. A few people in the room snickered.
Cassie raised one eyebrow, in confusion. "How do you say 'Can I go pee?'"
"'Je peux aller faire pipi?'"
"Okay," my blonde friend nodded. "Je peux aller faire pipi?"
"Faire vite," Ms Morell dismissed, going back to her work.
Cassie came walking up beside me, "What did she say?"
I chuckled, "'Make it quick'."
"Oh," we both laughed quietly.
As I finished the quiz that was on my table, I'm called out of the room and to the principle's office
I knocked on the door and heard a faint 'come in'.
"You wanted to see m-" I stopped talking once I saw Gerard sitting in the chair.
"Please don't tell me you kidnapped Mr Thomas?" I asked.
"I didn't," he replied. I sighed in relief. "Your parents did."
My eyes widened. "What?" I almost yelled. "Why would they do that? No–scratch that. Why would you want to be principle of a high school?"
"To keep an eyes on things," he said.
"You mean to keep an eye on me?" I asked.
"Yes," Gerard nodded, "among other things."
"It's bad enough you're staying at home, now I've also got you watching me like a hawk at school," I rolled my eyes, "I can handle myself quite fine thank you very much."
With that, I walked out of the office and bumped into someone. Looking up, I saw Stiles's dad.
"Sorry Sheriff Stilinski," I apologised, smiling, "I didn't see you there."
"It's okay, Madison," he nodded.
Once French class was over, I saw Cassie and Scott running towards the front double doors so I followed.
I heard a familiar car pull up.
"Get in," Derek ordered.
"Are you serious?" Scott asked. "You did that, that's your fault."
"I know that." Derek said. "Now get in the car and help me." Cassie walked over to the black camaro and sat in the back.
"No, I've got a better idea. I'm gonna call a lawyer. Because a lawyer might have a chance at getting him out before the moon goes up."
"Not when they do a real search of the house."
"What do you mean?" Scott asked.
"Whatever Jackson said to the police, what's inside the house is worse. A lot worse."
Scott turned around and looked at me.
"You coming?" He asked.
"I'll see you guys there," I responded, smiling. Turning around, I walked back in to the school.
After coming up with an excuse for my absence tonight, I drove to Isaac's house. Getting out of my car, I walked inside the building.
I began quietly walking around the house, looking at the family photos.
"If I'm with you, I loose her." That's Scott.
"You're going to loose her anyway." And that's Derek.
"Then why are you with Madison?" Scott asked. "She's sort of an Argent."
"That's different. She and I are mates. The longer I stay away from her the harder it will be for me to control myself," Derek explained.
I continued looking at the photos as I heard footsteps coming closer. Cassie and Derek came walking out of the basement.
"Hey, you're here," she greeted, smiling.
I nodded. "So, I told my parents I was staying at your house to finish a school project."
It's a good thing my parents still don't know Cassie is a werewolf.
"Alright, let's go," she announced, then walked out of the house.
"See you later," I told Derek.
I walked passed him but he stopped me. I looked up at him and sighed.
"Yes?"
"Be safe," he said.
"I will, I promise."
His arms wrapped around my back and pulled me closer. I stood on my tippy toes and pressed my lips to his. I pulled back a couple seconds later.
I pointed my finger at the middle of his chest. "Be safe," I repeated his words.
Cassie and I went down the steps of the abandoned subway station that Derek has been hiding at.
"Where do you want me?" She asked.
"Um...the train cart, I guess."
I grabbed the chains, bolted them to the wall and tied the other ends around her wrists and ankles. I pulled on them to make sure it was tight.
"Did you have to do this with Elijah?" Cassie asked once I sat down.
"Yeah, I did," I confessed, "to be honest, I really didn't need to. His family were werewolves, but I wanted to help and wouldn't take no fir an answer."
She started breathing heavily.
I checked the time and noticed she would be shifting any minute.
She let out scream. I immediately stood up. Her nails were replaced with sharp claws, canines grew in her mouth, her face changed shape and ears grew pointy. I saw two shinny golden spots looking straight at me.
Cassie started pulling on the bolts.
"Find your anchor! Think about your mum and Lydia!" I yelled. "Christmas time with family. Think about how happy you are with them, when you see them smile when you walk in the room. Hold onto that." Please work!
A few minutes later, she stopped trying to get free. She changed back to normal.
"You did it," I smiled, then laughed. "You found your anchor?"
"My mum and Lydia," she confirmed, taking deep breaths. "I'm so tired."
Maybe I would make a great pack mum...
I unchained her and she laid down on a train seat. I grabbed my blanket from my sleepover bag and gave it to her. I slipped on my two sizes big jumper and found myself another train seat. Closing my eyes, I slowly started to fall asleep.
I could hear footsteps but I was too tired to see who it was.
Feeling someone's lips on my forehead I couldn't help but softly smile. "Goodnight," I heard Derek whisper.
