Chapter 1:
Charles had been waiting for this day all his life, the day he was finally going to marry his mate, Anna. Their relationship was still new, she was still skittish around dominant wolves, and he was still not used to having someone to lean on and talk to when he needed help. But it didn't matter because he knew that they would work through it, they were meant to be. The only way that this day could have been any better was if his sister was at his wedding.
Charles hadn't talked to Ophelia in over 150 years. She left with him and Bran after the massacre in the woods all those years ago, but she came out of that day a broken woman. They stayed together for a little less than 50 years, moving around to different packs, sometimes as wolves and sometimes as people. But she wasn't happy, didn't know if she ever could be again so she left. Ophelia told him that she just needed some space, that she would come back to him to be a family again when she was ready. Charles knew that she needed time to get over what had happened, her heart being broken and the deaths of the two tribes still weighed heavily on her after all these years. So with that in mind Charles gave her a hug and watched as Ophelia ran away into the woods.
That had been the last time that the two of them had talked, and Charles had thought of her everyday since she left. Hoping that she was doing ok, that she had found happiness somewhere and hadn't decided that she couldn't go on with her life. But it was days like today that Charles missed her most, she was supposed to be there for his wedding day. Standing next to him as his best man, while Samuel stood behind her grumbling how she wasn't even a man. But Charles knew, just like he had all of the other times that he wished she was there, that it was en empty hope and that she wouldn't be there to make him laugh and forget his nerves at the alter. And with that in mind, he buttoned the last button on his tuxedo and walked out of the house on the way to the church where he would get married to the mate he had finally found.
The wedding was perfect, Anna's family had shown up and her father had walked her down the aisle. All of the Marrok's pack had been there, waiting to see if the enforcer would cry as his bride walked towards him, and slightly disappointed when he did not. After the ceremony, there was a reception, one that Anna's family could be part of before all of the wolves went on a celebratory run. The reception was beautiful, with bright colors to offset the white of the snow and loud laughter to contrast to the quiet cabinets right outside. Charles was talking to Sam about the pros and cons of one Mercy Thompson when he smelled it. A fruity, almost citrus smell, mixed subtly with a hint of spring flowers, it was a scent that he hadn't smelt in over 150 years, the smell of his twin sister Ophelia. Charles turned around abruptly, hoping that his nose was right and it wasn't his mind playing tricks on him and there she was.
Ophelia stood outside the church nervously, she hadn't seen her brothers or father in so long. What if they were mad that it had taken so long for her to come out of the woods? Not to mention that spending over 100 years as a wolf in the woods had hampered her social skills quite a bit, making her even more indecisive on whether or not now was a good time to enter back into civilized life. Her choice was made for her though when a group of young kids, hoping to take advantage of the free food, walked past her and into the church. One of the girls, a young blonde girl with a kind face, held open the door for Ophelia, looking at her inquisitively. "Are you coming?" she asked. Not having much of a choice, Ophelia took a deep breath and walked into the Church.
As soon as the door closed behind her, Ophelia regretted her decision to come in. There were too many people, too many eyes on her trying to figure out who this new wolf was and why she was just standing there. Then she saw Charles, he was standing next to Sam with an awestruck look on his face, a mix of happiness and disbelief. And as fast as the regret had come, it vanished. Instead it was replaced by happiness, love, and regret for leaving him for so long. O stood in the doorway for a minute just staring at her brothers, rememorizing their features and thinking to herself that they hadn't changed at all since she last saw them, except now they were dressed in suits instead of the skins she grew up with. After what felt like an hour, but was probably only two minutes, Charles started moving towards her with a huge smile on his face. Ophelia was frozen, she was surprised by how happy he looked and overwhelmed that their bond as twins seemed to be as strong as if they had been together all these years. Charles walked right to her, moving people out of his path without looking at who he was passing. Ophelia finally moved when Charles was right in front of her, she threw her arms around his neck in the biggest hug that she had ever given and would ever give. And as she did, Charles wrapped his arms right back around her, hugging so tightly that O was certain that she couldn't breath but it didn't matter to either of them.
Letting go of her brother, Ophelia looked up at his face, "Hey Charles, it's been a while."
