Surprise...
"You need to stay at my place sometime," Samantha's voice registered in the back of her head.
They were parked outside of Maple Hall, night had already settled and Anna had insisted that they'd stay and wait in the car with the pretense of catching up. In reality she just wanted to wait until Elsa arrived. She didn't know why, maybe because she wanted to understand what Elsa was up to.
"Sometime would be nice," Anna agreed. She just needed to keep the conversation going, not bothering to pay much attention to what she was agreeing to.
"So, did you have a good time?" Samantha spoke again.
Crap. What is taking her so long? What if she and Hans went somewhere else after?
She wouldn't do that? Would she?
Shit. Shit. Shit.
What is this? Jealousy? Ha! Jealous about something you don't even have?
But Elsa obviously made it clear she has feelings towards you right? I mean, what else could that have been? It was definitely a confession.
I'll just need to get it out o-
"Anna..." Samantha waved her hand in front of the redhead in an attempt to capture her attention. "Was the dinner that good that you couldn't stop thinking about it? Or... Can't stop thinking about me?"
Wide, teal eyes stared at Samantha briefly with surprise, after which Anna realized she needed to respond. "I had fun, but look... Sam. We need to talk about this..." She had an apologetic look on her face.
"Huh... And here I figured you weren't even paying attention but okay. What's up? Talk to me."
"Well, when... When we agreed that'd we'd - you and I - would be seeing each other again... We didn't agree to anything, did we? 'Cause I mean, sure we have a history but months have passed. You've gone through some stuff, as have I, but- ugh... What am trying to say is, we don't need to- I don't want to-" Anna could not find the right words to say. She didn't want to hurt Samantha but she also didn't want to lead her on.
"Relax Anna, relax. I understand what you're trying to say and I agree with you completely," she rubbed Anna's arm. "We'll just take things slow, okay?"
Anna only nodded, again not knowing what she was agreeing to. What did 'take things slowly' even mean?
The headlights of a car reflected on the mirrors and the building suddenly alerted Anna. A black Cadillac parked a few spaces away from them.
That has to be Hans. Who else has a car that nice around here? She thought, not noticing how her hands turned into fists or how fast she removed her seat belt.
"Woah, there. Slow down!" Samantha extended her arm to prevent Anna from doing anything else. "We haven't done much catching up, have we? Or am I that boring?"
"Huh?... Oh! No, no! You're not boring, trust me... I just-I just feel really tired all of the sudden." She didn't like lying and the fact that she was doing it while trying to rebuild their relationship made it worse. But her priority was Elsa, not Samantha. She could repair her relationship with Samantha later, at the moment she just had to prevent Hans from getting his hands on Elsa.
There he was, being a gentleman and getting the door for the blonde, Anna observed cautiously. If she didn't feel jealous and the circumstances were very different, she would admit that someone like Hans; a man with his life put together and his priorities in check would be perfect for Elsa. But that wasn't the case, she almost felt bad for thinking about it. She wanted Elsa, and maybe Elsa wanted her; there was no way anyone would get between that, Anna would make sure of it.
She noticed how nicely he treated her and of course how politely Elsa acted. They both finally reached the entrance of the building. Elsa turned around and took off the coat Hans had offered her earlier, preventing him from coming any further inside.
Go home, you perv! Anna couldn't help but scream internally.
Fury spread through her as she saw the proximity between Elsa and Hans disappear.
"You've no clue what I'm saying, do you?" Samantha commented, carelessly and leaning back into her seat.
Anna turned to look at her, focus out of place. "Ah! I'm sorry, like I said I'm really tired. I should go." She gathered her things and stepped of the car. "I'm really sorry, Sam," she tried to put on the most apologetic look on her face. She was genuinely sorry, but she was also in a hurry and Samantha could tell.
"Yeah, yeah." The girl in the driver seat waved and gave her a shy smile. "Talk soon, okay?"
Anna nodded and half walked, half ran to the entrance.
"Well, look who it is." Anna blurted out, her intention set on stopping Hans from doing whatever he was about to do.
The tall guy turned, a bit surprised but managed to pull up a smile once he recognized Anna. "Anna! We figured you were already inside considering we kind of took a detour." The grin on his face made Anna think he was bragging, she only hoped it wasn't true.
"A detour, huh?" She asked not so contently.
"Yes, we could have stayed longer but Elsa insisted it was late," Hans explained himself.
"It is late and I am tired," Elsa finally made herself present. Anna noticed the shift of mood on Elsa's part from when they were having dinner to now.
"It's been a long day, maybe we should just head inside," Anna chuckled and tried to walk in between the short space Hans was from Elsa. The redhead smiled after he stepped back a few feet.
Yeah, that's right!
"Well, I guess I'll see you two ladies next week." He gave them a warm smile and looked at Elsa, "or maybe sooner."
"Don't forget your coat," Elsa called as Hans began to walk back to his car. He ran back to get it and started to walk back to his car, but not before placing a kiss on the blonde's cheek.
Who does he think he is?! Anna wanted to scream but thought better about it. She needed to retaliate; she locked her arm on Elsa's - who noticed the pull from the redhead - and stared at Hans with sneering eyes. "We should really head upstairs," she said in the least friendly tone she could muster.
"Right. Good night, ladies." Hans finally got into his car and with that Anna pulled Elsa into the building.
They walked in silence towards the end of the hall until they finally reached the elevator. Neither of them dare take a look at the other. It wasn't until they elevator's doors closed that Elsa finally pulled herself away from Anna's hold.
The redhead took it unexpectedly, shooting Elsa a glance and then regretting it after seeing the annoyance on the blonde's face. "What are you even mad about?"
Damn it Anna, you think before you speak! Remember that!
"There's a difference between mad and annoyed, Anna." Elsa rolled her eyes but Anna didn't give up.
"Alright, what are you annoyed about?" She asked as the doors opened and they stepped out into their floor.
"I rather not talk about it," Elsa replied.
Seconds passed as they both walked, Anna didn't know how to continue any further. She had no clue as to how to approach Elsa about what happened earlier, but she also couldn't forget about it.
"We do need to talk though," Anna mumbled as they reached their dorm room. She couldn't lie to herself, she kind of wanted Elsa not to have listened to what she'd just said.
"That, we do," Elsa said coldly, holding the door open for the redhead.
Anna struggled to find the right words. She knew what they needed to talk about, but how would she initiate that conversation is what bothered her the most.
They settled into the dorm, Elsa waited for Anna to exchange some words, which forced her to remain silent. "Did you have fun tonight?" The blonde finally said, not sure what kind of answer to expect. She knew she needed to keep her calm and confidence - the confidence she had had in the restaurant not too long ago - even if she desperately just wanted to apologize.
"You're really going to ask me that right now?" Anna answered. Maybe Elsa didn't want to talk about it, but she needed to get straight to the point, even if she meant losing her temper, again.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Is there something else you want to talk about? Because you sure as hell aren't saying anything." Elsa turned abruptly to look at her.
Oh, ouch.
Anna opened her mouth a few times, there was so much bottled up inside her then and there that she just wanted to blurt it all out. She took a deep breath and settled her thoughts. "How about you tell me what your little act was about?"
Wide blue eyes stared back at her with disbelief. Regardless, she couldn't help but admire the woman standing in front of her. She found herself staring at the blonde's long figure and her curves, and that dress... Only Elsa had the power to transform from beautiful to sexy and everything in between. Elsa was the definition of everything she was looking for. As she saw her standing there, it was hard to be angry, even if she wanted to she couldn't. "Elsa..." Anna started again after noticing how speechless the blonde had become. "Let's get to the point. I just want-I need to know," she sighed, unable to keep going.
"What do you need to know exactly?" The blonde began getting ready for bed.
"Why did you do that? Why couldn't you just tell me with words? I mean, I still don't understand..." Anna cried out.
"Hmm...just like I can't understand how you're willing to go back to someone who treated you so bad." Elsa didn't bother looking at the redhead anymore.
"Oh please, you don't even know anything about the relationship me and Samantha had. So please, don't you dare bring it up." Anna tried not to scream but it was clear that her tone had changed, drastically.
There was something on Elsa's eyes and Anna could see it. Was it fury? Frustration? Anger? Anna didn't know.
"How can I not? You drag me along with her, Anna. We talked about this, remember? You wanted my opinion on her and now you can't accept it?"
Anna gulped. It was true, she did want Elsa's opinion on the matter, but now she realized it was more she was after. "You... No, Elsa. You haven't given me your opinion yet. You're only stating the obvious, you don't like Samantha. You never told me why."
Elsa didn't know how to respond to that, sure she had reasons not to like Sam, but were they concrete reasons? Surely they were reasons Anna wouldn't accept. "Let me ask you this," Elsa tried a different approach this time, "how would it look to you if I went back to Ian...or-or Carlos?" She cringed at the mention of the latter, but she needed to make her point.
"That's not a very good analogy, Samantha is different. There's no comparison."
Elsa's eyes shifted from left to right continuously as she tried to win the argument. "Samantha is no different; your judgment is clouded by your nonexistent feelings towards her, Anna. You're seeking that connection you had before and it won't do you any good..."
That hit a spot within Anna that not many people seemed to find. What Elsa was saying was true, but she had no right to say it. "You know nothing about the way I feel," she lied. Sure, things with Samantha weren't the same but there was something there nonetheless. "-and you have no right to tell me who I can and can't be with. I thought we had established that already."
"Anna, please. Just-just listen to me. Put all your anger aside, forget about what I did and try to look at this from my point if view, or anyone's point of view, excluding your own."
There was silence. Elsa seemed more persistent than usual. Maybe she cared for her, maybe she should try to listen to her advice. "Look, Elsa. I'm trying to understand you, I really am," Anna implored. "-but you're not giving me much to understand here, you need to explain yourself."
Elsa thought about it before responding, "Okay." She nodded. "I'm sorry I'm acting this way. I just… I've grown to care about you and I feel the need to protect you." Anna could tell there was worry on the blonde's eyes. "I don't want her to hurt you again, Anna." Elsa wanted to hide, to disappear. She was not the one to say how she usually felt about people, or express her feelings at all. This was definitely a first.
"I see," Anna pursed her lips.
We're finally getting somewhere, she thought.
"That I can understand, Elsa; I understand you trying to protect me, just like you did with Carlos - and I am thankful for that - but you don't need to worry, Sam wouldn't dare hurt me."
"You don't know that!" Elsa retorted.
"And you do?! Can you just stop attacking her?" Anna was on the defensive now. Why did Elsa insist of putting Sam on a bad light anyway? "Now I understand why your father and your sister decide to stay away from you!" She was mad, too furious to process what she had just said.
Elsa stared back at her, a blank expression on her face. She opened her mouth several times, wanting to say so much but only managing to exhale. She gave up on trying to say anything back after failing to remove what Anna had just said from her thoughts. It hurt, it really hurt and Anna knew it, or maybe she didn't. "How dare you use something I trusted you with against me?" Her eyes were now watery. She tried to hold in the tears, but a few escaped nonetheless.
The redhead's heart broke to pieces after realizing what she had just said. Running to Elsa's side, she hesitated before making contact. The older girl had taken the liberty of holding herself together, making herself into a ball so small that Anna was sure she couldn't feel any worse. "Elsa, I am so, so sorry..." She said it as fast as she could, as if time would run out and Elsa wouldn't forgive her.
The blonde had sunk her head on her knees, arms hugging herself. Anna noticed by the way her shoulders shook that she was probably crying. She attempted to place an arm around her shoulders, to comfort her, but Elsa shook her away, refusing the approach.
"I-I didn't mean it, Elsa. Please forgive me. I... I was angry and I shouldn't have said it..." Anna kept trying.
Elsa looked up and wiped her cheeks with the back of her hands. "You what know, Anna?" She continued in a hurtful tone, "Have you stopped to think that maybe this isn't all about Sam?"
Anna stared in confusion. With all that had just happened, it took her a while to finally understand where Elsa was getting at. Then it all came back to her, the way Elsa had approached her earlier at the restaurant and how she had somehow confessed, it was all clear now. "You...you feel something for me, don't you?"
"I'm starting to doubt whether that is a good idea," was all Elsa said.
Anna laughed. "This-this isn't fair, you know?"
Elsa furrowed her eyebrows, "What's not fair? How is it not fair?"
"I liked you a long time ago, Elsa." Anna started, "I liked you and you didn't like the fact that I liked you. I wasn't allowed to like you and now... now I'm supposed to just accept this?" The irony of the situation didn't help with lightening the complicity of the argument. "You know what the funny thing is?" She sighed, "I still feel the same way about you as I did months ago and I've been holding it in, keeping this friendship up because I just can't stand being away from you... and now what? I'm supposed to like you back because you like me or do I get to reject you like you did to me?"
Neither Elsa nor Anna said anything after. Anna was right, Elsa thought. The way she had treated Anna had been unfair and maybe she deserved the same judgment as that of Samantha, maybe she was just as guilty as Samantha.
Anna walked back to her side of the room. It had been enough arguing and assuming for one day but Elsa interrupted her.
"So what? You're giving up on me? On us?" Elsa's voice was almost a whisper.
Anna was definitely startled by the question. The matter at hand was complicated, how could she be asked to choose?
"Look Elsa, if we're going to do anything then you and I are going to take thing slow. I can't rely on your feelings for me... You might just be saying this to keep me away from Sam but... if it's meant to be it will happen. I have Samantha back in my life. It's not like you two can't share me."
Elsa stared at her, her eyes red and swollen from the silent cries. She no longer had the strength to argue anymore so calling it a day seemed like the best idea. "Whatever, Anna. Have it your way."
"I'm sorry that I'm confused, Elsa. You can't just throw around words like that and expect me to act a certain way. I have two people in my life that I care for- you and Samantha- and I'm not willing to give up on either of you."
"Good night, Anna," Elsa sniffled.
