- ONE WEEK LATER -
"Kim? Would you like to say a few words about Alex?" Her Aunt Ella asked, teary eyed at the podium of the church. Kim nodded, tears in her eyes. She got up and went up to the podium. She took a deep breath. "M-My sister, Alex was only four years old. She was... She was just a little ball of sunshine." Kim said.
"She lit up the room whenever she was in It. It was hard not to smile around her. We were really close. She was the best thing in my life. We shared many memories. Like when we played dress up together. Or the time she poured ketchup on me and said that she did it just for fun. I never got mad at her. I thought that my parents wouldn't get a chance to see her grow up. Now nobody will. My sister didn't... pass away. She just left to visit our parents." Kim said with tears now freely running down.
"Thats what I told her. She told me that she was s-sorry for leaving me. Alex was such an amazing little girl and an amazing little sister. She shouldn't have gone through what she had to go through. Thank you." Kim said, wiping her tears and going back to her seat. Everyone applauded with sorrow and pity showing. Kim sat down again next to Jack as speeches were continued.
After the funeral, they went to the graveyard to bury the coffin that Alex was in. Kim stood in her black dress and black heels, watching her sister being lowered into the hole dug just for her. Deja vu She thought as she chuckled darkly. "I know right. Such a deja vu moment." Jack said next to her trying to lighten her mood. Kim looked up at Jack. She looked into his eyes and just hugged him. She hugged him as tight as she could and he hugged back just as hard. Not too hard as he didn't want to crush her in his arms.
Kim let the tears flow out and she hid her face in Jack's chest. He just rubbed soothing circles on her back. "Thank you so much, Jack." Kim said. She really meant it. "You are always here for me. You brought me out of my shell. You made me more confident and you made me a better person. You have always stuck by me. Thank you." Kim said whole heartedly. "Your welcome, Kimmy. I will always be here for you no matter what happens. I love you so much, Kimmy." Jack said. Kim smiled into his chest.
They broke away, both missing the warmth. Alex's coffin was now lowered into the hole and the workers were covering it up. Kim, Jack, Ella and Kim's grandparents stayed there for a long time. They just stood there for hours, even after everyone left. Her Aunt Ella came up to Kim. "Kim, sweet heart It's time to go. We can't stay here forever. I know you wish you can but you can't." Ella said with her eyes red and puffy from crying.
"I'll come home later, Aunt Ella. I wanna stay here for a few more minutes." Kim said. Ella nodded. "Be home soon. Don't stay for too long." Ella said quietly. Kim nodded. Ella looked to Jack. 'Take care of her.' She mouthed. Jack just nodded. Kim waved goodbye to her Aunt Ella. She saw a small rose bush and was about to go to it. But Jack beat her to it, reading her thoughts. He used his vampire speed and went to the bush. There were three roses. All of them had long stems and were a beautiful blood red color. He picked the roses and sped back to Kim.
He held out the roses for her to take. Kim smiled. "Thank you." She said quietly. Kim gently took the roses out of his hand and went back to Alex's grave. She sat infront of it and softly touched the grave. She brang her fingers back and kissed them. A single tear ran down her cheek. She placed the smallest rose on her grave. She then got up and went to the back of the graveyard, where her parent's graves lie. She went and sat at her mother's grave. She did the same thing. She lightly touched her fingers on the grave and kissed her fingertips. She placed the second biggest rose on the grave. "Mommy." She whispered. Another tear.
Kim then got up and went to her father's grave, which was right on the left side of her mother's grave. She repeated the same thing. She touched her fingers on the grave and kissed her fingertips. She placed the biggest rose on the grave. "Daddy. I miss you." She whispered. Another tear. She wiped it away. Three graves, three tears, three roses. How cliche. Kim thought. Jack chuckled at her. She turned around, almost forgetting he was standing there, watching her.
Jack walked up to her and kissed her forehead. He pulled her into his arms, knowing she needed the comfort at the moment. "Kimmy, I know that things are hard right now. I know how you feel. You have a right to be upset. It feels like you have nothing left in the world. But trust me, there are people here for you. You have me, you have you Aunt Ella, you have your grandparents, you have Dave, you have many more. There are many things that await your future. Life has many obstacles to overcome. This is one of them." Jack said.
"I'm not saying that you shouldn't be angry or upset. You have a right to. I'm saying that you should still be positive. I hate seeing you so sad and upset. You are beautiful in whatever you do. But you are much more beautiful when you smile. Kimmy, no matter how upset you are, you need to let the sadness go. You have to continue with a smile. For your parents and Alex. Tomorrow, I want you to wake up and be positive. I want you to be happy. Trust me, it will help." Jack said giving her a reassuring smile. Kim also smiled.
"Thanks Jack. I promise I will be positive. I won't break down." Kim said. Jack smiled and kissed the top of her head. "Kim, I'm always going to be here for you. I promise." Jack said. Kim looked up into his eyes. She got on her tippy toes and kissed his cheek. "Now let's get you home. Your Aunt Ella might be worried." Jack said softly. Kim nodded and started walking out of the graveyard, with Jack right behind her.
They both went to where they parked the car and got in. "Jack? Can you drive a little slow please?" Kim asked, quietly. Her voice sounded vulnerable. So fragile. "Sure, Kimmy." Jack replied. He started the engine and they were on their way when Kim's cell phone rang. She took it out of her purse. The caller ID said Aunt Ella. She picked up the call. "Hello?" She said softly.
"Hi sweetie. I'm sorry but I need to go on another business trip. I have to go to New York for an important meeting. I will be gone for five days. I'm on my way to the airport. I'm sorry I'm leaving so suddenly. But It is very urgent and mandatory. I could lose my job if I don't go." Ella said. Kim nodded but then realized her Aunt couldn't see her. "It's okay. I can take care of myself." Kim said. "Alright honey. Remember, tomorrow you have school. I want you to go. Stay strong. Have a good day, sweetie." Ella said. "Thanks Aunt Ella. Bye." Kim said quietly.
They hung up. "You do realize I am not going to let you be on your own for almost a week? A girl alone in an empty house is usually exactly when the bad guy strikes." Jack said, trying to lighten the mood. Kim let out a small smile. "I know." She said. The couple reached Kim's home. They got out of the car and went to the front door. Kim unlocked it with her keys. They both went inside. "I'm going to go and change my clothes." Kim said. Jack just nodded. Kim slowly went up the stairs and walked down the long hall. she reached the of the hall. Kim opened the door on the right. She let out a scream.
