If anyone were to ask her how her life was going she would, with no doubt, stumble on her words because answering with exactly one word, or sentence, would be insufficient. It was put together, given some light and excitement. It was in one of those stages where no matter what happened, anything that could go wrong would simply be seen as a minor detail of what was currently her life. Ultimately, life was, for lack of a better word, great. But that's not what she was the happiest about, she had been for days, the reason being Anna. Anna made her life great.
The fact that she had the redhead in her life made her look at life a little differently. Sure, she'd been in Elsa's life for a while now but having the pleasure to share the most intimidate moments with her and confide in her... That... That made it all worth it, and perhaps the best feeling was having the opportunity to appreciate the character that was Anna, not just in the physical sense. Yes, Anna was attractive, way too attractive if she said so herself, but Anna wouldn't be Anna without her personality; her stubbornness, honesty, and most importantly, her crazy side.
Their road was a bumpy road, but they made it, to their first stop at least. They were, officially, in another step of what was their relationship. She had liked Anna for a while before that moment in time and although she often found herself thinking about all the things they went through, together or otherwise, she wouldn't have it any other way. It was all worth it, so very worth it.
Never having experienced that type of connection or attraction with anyone else before, Elsa wondered what was so special about Anna. It was definitely an intriguing and contradicting matter because she wanted to solve the mystery but she also wanted to pursue it for a lifetime. There were many things she was sure of and many others she was unsure of. She wasn't afraid to acknowledge the fact that Anna and herself would have their differences every now and then, that was normal, even more so in their relationship. She also wasn't sure whether this would be a mistake, another heartbreak to add on the record. No one really knew what direction their new relationship was destined to take. What she was absolutely sure of though, was that it was too soon to be thinking about that. Too soon to determine if things were going to end, they had so much time and she couldn't bring herself to think about a life without that certain redhead; life would be boring. She knew a great deal about life but not a great deal about love. Maybe she loved Anna, maybe it was too soon to love her but one thing was for sure, she would have plenty of time to fall in love with her if she hadn't already.
Those were the things she allowed herself to think about when Anna's absence got the better of her. Could it be possible to get addicted so quickly? She missed her. She liked missing her, as unusual as that seemed. Missing her meant she could think about her. She craved her presence and energy even when they were in the same room, so much so that she found herself staring at her longer than she should whenever they were together. The memory of Anna noticing and throwing a smirk at her brought a smile to her face. She'd been caught several times doing so in the past two days. Two days since she had the privilege to call Anna her girlfriend; two days during which Elsa could do nothing but admire the beauty of her girlfriend. Her reaction after being caught would be an instant blush, not because she didn't expect to be caught staring but rather because previously it had been the other way around and now she really couldn't help herself.
Anna was beautiful, both inside and out. Everything about her body was absolutely breathtaking. Her long eyelashes, her big, bright eyes that were excited all the time, her hypnotizing freckles, soft lips, red hair and that oh so very intriguing white streak that ran along with it... The list could go on forever if she allowed herself the time but for the moment being, she had business to take care of.
She'd been waiting for her father to finish one of his meetings and she was staring to regret finally giving into his request, or rather Ygrette's request, as the minutes ticked by. She just had to listen, she didn't have to agree to anything, or so her sister had said. Her hope was that her father wouldn't misunderstand and take her initiative to give it a try as an affirmative answer on his deal.
"I was surprised when they told me you requested a meeting, dear." Her father appeared from one of the corners that led to the waiting area. "But I'm glad you did, sorry to have made you wait. As you already know, things here at the office are usually very busy."
If Adgar was surprised, Elsa was even more surprised that he was treating her with something other than indifference. Was he actually being kind?
"I was about to head out but I see you just finished." She said as she stood up and left her seat.
Adgar raised both eyebrows and widened his eyes, perhaps a bit startled by Elsa's response. He placed his palm on her back and walked her to his office. "Good thing you didn't leave then." Elsa wondered whether it was hard for him to pretend being nice.
The last time she had set foot in his office was when she was still a little girl, and although a lot of years had passed since then, the modern building remained about the same. Those were different times though, distant memories she couldn't bring herself to think about now.
"Can I be blunt?" She asked before her father opened the door into his office for her. He open his mouth to say something, or protest, but instead only smiled and nodded. He knew Elsa was in control; she had the power to say no. "I'm only here because I want the details of this proposal. This doesn't mean I'm agreeing to anything, I hope you understand."
"Of course, you have to think about it. I'd be disappointed if you didn't and I'm glad you're willing to at least give it a chance." He went around his desk and motioned for Elsa to take a seat.
"Explain to me why my involvement is crucial." Her expressions didn't offer much. She was being cold Elsa again, she needed to be.
"Ah..." Her father started, "you're here because you're curious?"
"That too. Care to elaborate?" She gave him an intense glare.
"Certainly. Like I mentioned previously, a fellow from the company you work for cont-"
"Hans. Hans Westerguard."
Again, Elsa surprised him. He began to wonder if she knew more about the detail than she was letting on or whether Hans had had the chance to talk to her himself.
"I take it he has talked to you then?"
"Not at all, but I have my reasons to suspect. Now, you were saying?" She wondered for a second if she had revealed too much about what she knew, but her father didn't seem to notice. Maybe he was too busy trying to convince her that he didn't have time to worry about anything else given off by her.
He looked just as sure of himself as always, sitting behind the black wooden desk, arms spread and body leaned back into the leather chair. The years that had passed became evident in his facial features and his white hair, now more predominant than ever. He still had that look of hunger in his eyes and if the situation were any different, Elsa was sure she could have grown to admire him.
She knew she shouldn't be the one to judge the man in front of her. After all, they were all driven by different things and family didn't seem to be one of his priorities. She, herself, had made mistakes every now and then, more than she could count. She looked at the pictures on his desk. It was no surprise to her that he would have pictures of her mother in her younger years but it hurt to acknowledge it because it made the realization of their relationship all the more present. Her eyes remained on the frames longer than they should have but she really couldn't help herself. Her eyes then wondered to the other pictures, the pictures of them as a family. No one was fully good or fully evil so was it wrong to resent this man for shutting her out?
"Elsa?" Adgar called out to her. She'd stop paying attention without noticing and he took notice of what she was stating at. "Ah, you miss her as much as I do, don't you?"
"Are you capable of missing her?" She wanted to ask but took a subtler approach instead . "I miss much more than that."
He looked at her, as if not comprehending exactly where she was getting at. "You miss those times."
She couldn't bring herself to look at him, afraid of what his eyes might reveal. "We weren't a perfect family but... We were together."
They both remained quiet for a while. The only thing that seemed to break the silence was their breathing and eventually the phone machine. "Mr. Arendelle, this is a reminder that you have a meeting in fifteen minutes."
"Cancel that meeting for me if it's not possible to postpone it, will you? I'm taking care of something else." And it was there that Elsa finally looked at him. He offered her a smile and it was a genuine smile, was it possible that he was actually making time for her?
"You didn't have to do that, I can come back another time," she offered.
"Oh my dear Elsa, I didn't have to but I felt I needed to. I've been avoiding this conversation for too long now. I must admit, I never thought I would actually be telling you all of this."
"What-what is it?" She was prepared for bad news because that's how it had always been with her father, bad or unpleasant news.
"I never wanted kids." He said it rapidly and swallowed, trying to come up with the next words. "I've always been about personal achievements and so this company has always been my life. Your mother respected that, and I admired her for it. She often joked that I loved my job more than I loved her but we both knew that wasn't true. I lover her very much, very much indeed." He stared at her photograph. "But I was never a man driven by feelings or emotion, the only thing I cared about the most was the success of this company and I... I failed to see that your mother needed just as much of my time. She loved me a lot, she would have left if she didn't."
That was certainly unexpected, Elsa wondered why all of the sudden Adgar was willing to share all of this with her, but he continued. "Eventually I noticed how lonely she was getting and I talked to her about it. I offered that I would take more time off for her, but you wouldn't believe what she told me." He shook his head and smiled, recalling the memory.
"What did she tell you?"
"She refused my offer. She said she couldn't put me in that position, she couldn't take away my love for the company so she asked for kids instead and I agreed. Ygrette kept her company but soon enough I was just as enthusiastic about her as I was about my job and I didn't realize I was taking her away from your mother. Then you came into the picture and, don't get me wrong, I did love you, how could I not? You are my daughter but I couldn't bring myself to take you away from her. You were all she really had and you were just like her, not just physically but you behaved just like she did." He remained silent then continued, "So when she passed away I couldn't bring myself to look at you. I understand how cowardly that sounds but you were the very same image of your mother and... That just reminded me of all the time I didn't give her. I felt guilty, I suppose."
"I... I felt guilty, too. I still do."
"Guilty? You shouldn't feel guilty, and I apologize for making you feel that way. You may wonder why I'm now telling you all this but I've come to realize that if something were to happen to you or me... I don't want either of us to regret the way we decided to treat each other."
Elsa stared, pensively. She'd come to her father for an entirely different reason than pouring his heart out but regardless, she was glad. He was being honest, he wasn't playing games or trying for to use that information as a strategy, he really felt that way.
"Look, I know this it too much to take in so, tell you what? Let's call it a night and I'll give you the documents pertaining to the deal. You can look them over and decide whether you want to take part in it or not. Take as long as you need."
She only nodded, finally understanding where her father was coming from. He was right, she resembled her mother quite a lot but he failed to realize that she also shared many of his qualities. Her stubbornness, for instance, or her motivation to succeed, for everything to be perfect down to the last detail and finally, her inability to express her feelings and emotions.
She felt a slender pair of arms wrap around her waist and the pressure of someone's head on her back as she stood in line and looked at the menu.
"I missed you." The voice she longed for filled her ears and she couldn't help but smile after realizing Anna was the one hugging her from behind.
"You could startle someone like that, you know?" Elsa turned around to look at the cheery redhead.
"What would you have done if that was the case?" She challenged.
"I could have attacked you, you never know."
"Somehow I doubt that. You wouldn't even kill a fly," the redhead grabbed Elsa's bicep and forced her to turn back around since the line was moving. It had been a long day for them both, what with having so many errands to run before the Christmas break.
"That's because you've only seen my good side."
The person in front of them finished ordering their food and the cashier motioned for them to proceed. "I'd love to see your naughty side," Anna reached up to Elsa's ear and whispered, causing Elsa to blush immediately and Anna to laugh hysterically.
Once they ordered their food and settled in one of the cornered booths, both girls began to talk about their day. Elsa began by mentioning her visit to her father's company and the unexpectedness of it all, which was followed by a lot of commentary and questions from the redhead.
"So... do you think that means he's willing to change your relationship with him?"
Elsa shifted her eyes towards the ceiling and thought about it. "I'm not sure, it's hard to tell. With him it always is, but the way I see it, he's excusing his behavior although not necessarily in a bad way."
"Well, what do you make of it?"
"At first, I was a bit conflicted about his approach. I thought he was saying that to persuade me but he didn't even bring up the deal until after I was about to leave and I- well, I understand where he's coming from. I've been where he is, I suppose."
Anna swallowed her food before saying anything else. "Did you discuss the details of the business deal at all?"
"Vaguely. He did give me some papers pertaining to the deal so I could look over them. I'm not sure if I will anytime soon. I'm in desperate need of a vacation."
Anna's eyes lit up and widened immediately. "And a vacation you will have! I talked to my parents today, by the way. I told them we were coming over," Elsa sat up attentively at the mention of Anna's parents, it was always good to hear about them. "I wish you could have been there during the phone call. They literally can't wait to see you. If I didn't know any better I'd think they're more anxious to see you than their own daughter!" Elsa used her hand to cover her laugh. "I'm serious, you'll see it when we get there but... Oh! I was thinking-"
Elsa decided to interrupt her. "You know? Every time the phrase "I was thinking," comes out of your mouth I get a little scared."
"Scared, pfft. When have I ever scared you?"
"Need I remind you of the skydiving incident?" Elsa replied with a question of her own.
"Incident? That was no "incident," you ended up enjoying that even more than I did!" Anna's voice became a bit louder as she got excited about the topic.
"That is true, talk about the rush I make you feel. I guess I did feel it, huh?"
Anna's lips immediately spread into a smile, "I don't know about that... perhaps we should try something a little, umm, scarier?"
"Last time I checked I was the one who owed you a date..." The blonde folded her arms across her chest as she remembered the conversation they had after they both set foot on land after jumping out of the small plane.
"I haven't forgotten about that, you've just been so busy-"
"I know, it'll happen during Christmas break, I promise!" Elsa said before Anna could finish.
"I'll hold you to that. Anyway, are you excited about the ball tomorrow?"
"As excited as I'll ever be. Hans will be there..." Elsa pursed her lips.
"Does that bother you?" She had to admit, it did kind of bother her but maybe it also bothered Elsa.
"It makes me uncomfortable, that's for sure. Not only is he involved, or is planning to be involved, in some deal with my father but he also-" She stopped to consider whether what she was about to say would somehow anger the redhead.
"He also what, Elsa?" Anna stopped doing whatever she was doing to give Elsa her full attention, she felt it was something she needed to know and Elsa wasn't sure whether to tell her or not.
"He asked me to be his date tomorrow night, he's been insisting." She didn't know what kind of reaction to expect from Anna.
"And... what did you tell him?"
"I haven't answered any of his texts."
Anna didn't understand why Elsa couldn't just say she didn't want to go with him, or she couldn't because she had a date of her own, or any other excuse that would allow her to get out of that compromise. A part of her was angry for that, for failing to understand that side but another part of her comprehended that Elsa had her reasons. The blonde had a plan to get to the bottom of Hans' intentions and perhaps that was her reason for refusing to decline his invitation just yet.
"Are you okay?" Elsa noticed how Anna suddenly became quiet and pensive.
"No, yeah I'm fine." She tried to smile but they both knew it was a pretense smile. Knowing that it would get awkward if they left the conversation at that, Anna tried to joke about the matter at hand. "You know? I would say you have a thing for redheads but it seems to be the other way around in your case, redheads have a thing for you." She winked but Elsa, although she appreciated the effort Anna put to lighten the mood, knew that Anna was a little taken aback, if not hurt.
"I have a thing for only one redhead though," she half stood, considering it was hard to completely stand while sitting at a booth, and leaned over the table separating the two. Her hand reached for Anna's chin and pulled her closer to her, planting a soft kiss on the redhead's lips. "And that's you." She sat back down only to realize Anna remained with her eyes closed.
"I wasn't expecting that at all," she said once she finally opened them.
"Well-" Elsa was about to say something but Anna continued talking.
"To be completely honest, I wasn't expecting any of this at all. It's all so hard to take in, it's unbelievable. I mean, I hated you when I first met you, okay, maybe hate is a strong word. I disliked you and then I liked you but I was afraid. Then you found out and I hated you for a little bit and I hated the fact that I couldn't really bring myself to hate you but now this is real, this is all happening and it makes me wonder why? You could have anyone. You could have Hans, or Ian or Carlos or anyone else but you ended up choosing me. You ended up choosing what you thought you didn't want. So I wonder why this is happening, why we're together and why you kissed me?"
Elsa looked at her amusedly, "shall I say something before your rambling gets worse?"
Anna gave her a look before responding. "Please do."
"Well I suppose since you're being completely honest, it's only fair that I should be as well. This is happening because we both want it to happen, Anna. I'm with you because I want to be with you and I kissed you because I wanted to kiss you. Perhaps most importantly, I knew why I wanted to kiss you." Anna opened her mouth but failed to produce anything coherent to say, plus it seemed like Elsa wasn't finished quite yet. "I wanted to kiss you because you're beautiful, and before that because you are kind. And before that, because you are smart and funny. Because you are exactly the right kind of smart and funny. Because I can imagine taking a long trip with you without ever getting bored. Because whenever I see something new and interesting, or new and ridiculous, I always wonder what you have to say about it - how many stars you would give it and why."
If it were possible for Anna to have any more questions, they would all be answered with what Elsa had just told her. She wondered how she could ever doubt Elsa's feelings for her. If anything, she was just in it as much as she was and she was loving every second of it.
The remained sitting there, holding hands until they both decided it was time to call it a night.
AN: Short chapter, I know but including another scene would just make it way longer. I do hope you enjoy it though! What are your opinions on Adgar now? Also what will happen between Elsa and Hans? Stick around to find out on the next chapter ;D
