Author's Note: I'll be saying this 'til I'm blue in the face, but I do not own anything presented here.
Name: Rivera, N.
Location: ICPF headquarters (SpecWep Division)
Nathan Rivera was sitting in his office, adjusting his tie. His usual ice-blue armor was over in Engineering, going through a round of integrity tests and upgrades, and the suit he wore in replacement was trying his patience. Seated before him was one of many Special Weapons Agents that answered to him. The Agent was a nondescript man aside from his shoulder length, jet-black hair, and his eyes. His left eye was a brilliant cerulean, while his right was a bottle-green. Wether it was a trick of the light or just natural, his right eye appeared slightly more prominent.
"Well, looks like it's time, Commander. Are you sure this won't be a problem?" Asked the Agent.
Rivera stopped messing with his tie and replied, "No, it shouldn't. I've operated and overseen thousands of missions like this. As long as you cover your tracks and keep from starting any paradoxes, all should be alright. Oh, bugger this..." The commander ripped off the tie and opened up the topmost button to his shirt. "Much better. I want that weapon, Cobalt-Four. No other piece of Fomorian tech has given that sort of response, and it was originally was destroyed."
The Agent looked slightly guilty about this. "Well, this will be an easy mistake to correct, then." The Agent rose to his feet and saluted Rivera. "No point in wasting any more time." When the commander returned the salute the Agent turned and disappeared into thin air.
Once the Agent left, Nathan picked up a phone on his desk. "...Galbatorix? Have Verene geared up for a Azeroth run and bring her to Chamber Six. Cobalt Four is going to need backup."
Name: Potter, H
Location: The Blue Recluse, Stormwind (Warcraft Canon)
Harry, Makale and Captain Kaedrin were sitting at the small table in Harry's room at the Blue Recluse. Harry had bespelled the room for privacy as soon as they walked in. The paladin was speaking while the others listened for the most part. "Diana, what can you tell me about the dragons?"
The guardswoman looked at Makale incredulously. "Are you kidding me? You mean to tell us that we're getting mixed up with them? What on Azeroth are you thinking!?"
Harry cut in. "Captain, no offence, but less outbursts and more explaining. Mathers has a small lead on us and I rather not be sitting here when he gets to where he wants to be."
Captain Kaedrin let out a snort. "Fine. So... dragons. Created by the Titans as Azeroth's keepers. Five different flights, apparently color-coded. Don't ask which colored flight went with which aspect. The only one I remember was the Bronze Dragonflight. Placed in charge of keeping the timeline in order, or some such." Kaedrin let out a chuckle. "If time can be altered so easily that it needs policing, I'll eat my blade. What?"
Makale was drumming his fingers on the table, looking at Kaedrin as if he was in on some huge secret. "Uh Diana, do you remember who I answer to?"
Kaedrin buried her head in her palms. The sound from her was a muffled, "son-of-a..."
Harry caught on rather quickly. "Tanaris?"
Makale nodded. "Tanaris. The Caverns of Time. Mathers must be looking for a power source from the past. Or the future. I could never keep my self straight with that place."
Harry stood up. "Well, let me just get my..." He looked around. "Where's my pack?"
Makale reached into his belt and grabbed a crystal. "Right here. I have a friends who works with Void Storage." With that, the paladin activated the crystal, opening a small portal on the table. Reaching in, Makale drew out Harry's pack and tossed it to the wizard. "There's a new gift in there. I had it commissioned after the Stockade run." He then shut the crystal off and pocketed it.
Harry opened his pack and emptied the contents onto the table. His blade, which went unused due to the A.R.M. rails being razor-sharp; his hearthstone, which the wizard fervently hoped he never had to use again; his spare coin purse, with all his money accounted for; fourteen airfoil magazines, the fifteenth in his pocket for easier access; and a blued-steel gauntlet. Harry slid the gauntlet onto his left arm, testing the weight and feel. "It fits rather well, although I don't see why I should need something like this. I've been trying to keep most of my fights at range rather than up close and personal." He turned his palm up and looked at the underside, noticing a thin bar of steel, attached close to the elbow and open towards the wrist. "Is this what I think it is?"
Makale nodded. "For those cylinders of yours. This way you can always keep one close at hand, if you pardon the pun."
"Nice, thank you. Now, let's get going."
Kaedrin got to her feet. "'Bout damn time. And you thought I took too long."
"Master Judas, perhaps this time we'll get to Kalimdor without any unnecessary heroics, no?" Captain Soluna asked Harry at the midpoint of the trio's trip to Tanaris. "Winterdew is still pissed about that sniper shot she took in that battle. Healers or no, bullets are still painful for a long time."
"I apologise for Winterdew's injury, but we still managed to save the ship. Besides, from what I gather she was the worst of the injuries. Shot in the shoulder?"
Soluna nodded. "Aye. Just tell me that we're not running headlong into more trouble."
Harry looked grim. "I'm sorry, but I can't make that promise. It will definitely be dangerous for myself and my friends, but I can only hope that any problems only affect us and not the ship or its crew. The person we're hunting might try to attack Bravery in retaliation."
The captain let out a groan. "Figures." She turned and walked away.
Makale walked up behind the wizard and said, "You seem...off. Something on your mind?"
Harry nodded. "It seems like every time I try to help someone - anyone - they become another target for enemies. Just once I'd like there to be a simple fight. Me, the target, simple. No one else involved, no one else gets hurt. Do you think that's too much to ask?"
Makale let out a chuckle. "Judas, I've been trying to figure that out for years. You come up with a solution, you let me know. Until then? Well, we just have to try to protect those we help as best as possible. Just be careful not to stretch yourself too thin.I've seen too many allies get hurt or killed due to rushing to help others at the expense of themselves."
True enough, thought Harry. I am a shining example of that myself. Perhaps your right." The wizard let out a laugh. "Dear me, I seem to be getting depressed rather easily, aren't I?" Makale only shrugged, with a look that could only be taken as a sarcastic "I have no idea what you're talking about..." Harry smiled at the paladin. "Anyways, so who exactly do you answer to? You and the captain mentioned the 'Bronze Dragonflight,' but is there any else?"
Makale nodded. "I normally answer to the Red Dragonflight, the keepers of life here on Azeroth. The Bronze haven't requested my help, but I am to assist them whenever they call for me. It's been too long since I walked the Caverns of Time. Rifts open and close every second there, each one a portal to a new time and location. There's always a few major rifts that are permanently open, for constant inspection and realignment. We still need to find out which rift he may go through, which time he wants to get to. Any suggestions?"
Harry shrugged. "I've got nothing. What has me most worried is that if Mathers is looking to change the past for his benefit, would we recognise any changes already? After all, he could very well change something far enough in the past that we all could be affected." I might not be affected, but who knows what could happen to Mak and Diana should something happen. They wouldn't even notice something was amiss .
Makale reached into his armor and pulled out a necklace. "I don't think we have anything to worry about. This necklace protects me from temporal disturbances. I can spread its effects to other individuals at will. I'm more concerned with any of the other races. Depending on the shift Mathers creates anything can happen to them. Humans could end up at war with the dwarves, or the draenei could disappear entirely, having never arrived on Azeroth. Although, there are some events in history that I personally wish we could undo. The opening of the-"
And explosion rocked the right side of Bravery. Harry immediately primed and loaded his railgun and aimed down towards the area in question. Diana came up from below, a large crossbow in hand. "The fel just hit us?" said the captain.
Makale drew his sword as a lookout yelled to the deck, "Lone flier, two o'clock high! 300 yards, closing!" Harry ran to the foredeck and took aim down the holographic sights. Sure enough a lone target was visible in the hologram, an insectoid on what appeared to be a wheel-less motorcycle heading towards the ship. A flash burst forth from the front of the craft. Harry could only yell a startled, "Incoming!" to the crew as he drew his wand and summoned a shield in an attempt to protect the ship. The beam slammed into the shield, piercing it and striking the central mast. The sails attached began to catch fire from the heat of the blast. Harry launched a stream of water to quench the fire and turned back towards the target. With wand and railgun the wizard began firing spells and airfoil at the aggressor.
"So much for 'unneccessary heroics!'"
When the insectoid was close enough, it jumped off of the craft, crashing it into the ship. Turning to face Harry, the creature summoned a beam rifle and began firing at the wizard. The being began screaming at Harry, a piercing, metallic scream as it closed the distance between it and the Agent. Instinctively, Harry cast a stronger shield spell to block the shots while firing with his A.R.M. The rounds bounced off of the creatures armor, staggering it. The wizard pushed the advantage, bringing his wand to bear on the creature. However, instead of one of his normal spells, a pair of icy chains sprang up from the deck, binding the creature.
"Thank you Mister Potter, but now would be a brilliant time to duck," said a voice behind him. Without a thought Harry fell to the floor as the person the voice belonged to jumped over Harry and threw a large red halberd at the creature, throwing it back and pinning it to the aft wall. "Verene, now!" yelled the man as a young woman appeared, pressing the barrel of a shotgun to the head of the creature and pulled the trigger.
The woman let out a chuckle. "So, that's a Fomorian. I thought they were tougher." Turning to the man, she said, "Master, can I speak freely?" When the man nodded, the woman replied, "No offence, but you could get a job as one of the Players with your penchant for theatrics." This elicited a laugh from the man.
Harry stood up and looked at the man and woman. Both wore an unusual type of armor; a black undersuit with iridescent green plates molded to various critical points. The man wore a helmet colored exactly the same as the plates, while the woman wore none. Most of the helmet's front was covered by a reflective material, which Harry took to be a visor. Harry raised his primed A.R.M. at the man. "Enough. Take the helmet off, now. Mak? Captain?" With this, Makale and Diana leveled their weapons at the man and woman, respectively. "Who are you and what are you here for?"
The man let out a laugh as he went to take off his helmet. Once he got his helmet past his ears, the man threw it at Harry, who made to dodge it. With that distraction, the man launched a spell at Harry, dropping him to his knees. At the same time, the young woman ducked under Diana, disarming the guardswoman and leveling her shotgun at Makale as he turned around. "Enough!" yelled the woman. "We're just here to help! My name is Verene, and that is Master Merrick, we're Infinite Canon Police Force Agents, sent here to acquire some technology before it gets destroyed." Turning to Merrick, she said, "Tell them Master! Tell them..." The woman trailed off as she realise that both Harry and the Agent were frozen still.
Running over to the pair, Verene raised a hand and placed it on Merrick's forehead. "I don't understand...no spell struck him. He usually tries to pacify people with the Impe... wait a moment." She then put her hand on Harry's head. "Mithros, Merrick! What would possess you to do such a thing?"
Makale walked up to Verene, sword drawn. With an anger to his voice he said, "Miss Verene, was it? Perhaps you would like to explain just WHAT IN THE FEL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! What on Azeroth is an 'Infinite Canon Police Force?'"
"We're dimension travellers," said the woman. "We go from world to world, fixing problems that arise and make sure that events happen the way they're supposed to." Eyeing the paladin's armor, Verene nodded in understanding. "You could think of us as similar to the Bronze Dragonflight. Not only do we police time, but multiple realities as well."
Makale walked around Merrick. The man wore long hair, tied into a ponytail. Further inspection would reveal spikes protruding slightly from inside the hair. The paladin stopped when he saw the man's eyes. Blue and green...unusual. "And Judas?" asked Makale, still looking at Merrick. "What did your 'Master' do to him?"
"It's a recursive spell loop," replied Verene. "It only happens in rare occasions, but only in one specific situation. When a continuous-type spell targets it's caster and locks itself in a loop. It shouldn't happen when the spell targets someone else."
"Just what are you saying?" questioned Diana, who had picked up her crossbow and tossed it casually over her shoulder.
"That your friend and my Master here are the same person, give or take a few decades...or centuries."
Author's Note
Here I go again with the delays, I know. I'm sorry. I'm still trying to juggle work and my enlistment obligations and tend to get distracted easily. I already have Chapter Fourteen planned out and should be posting in the next few days. I just hope that this chapter doesn't disappoint.
I'm always grateful for the views and reviews. It means a lot that I have a following, no matter how small. Thank you.
As always, don't be afraid to read, rate and review this story. 3400+ views and climbing, and I would like to see it grow further. I'll also try to stretch out the chapters a bit (I feel like I'm cramming too much in 2500 words average).
Until next time,
MasterMerrick
P.S. The character name came first, not my username.
