Ok, I promise, I have NOT forgotten about Visions whatsoever! BUT this story has kind of gotten stuck in my brain, and I wanted to post the next chapter since all of you seemed so interested to see what happens next.
Enjoy!
Jack sped down the side of a steep hill at the North Pole, the snowboard that he had gotten as a gift from the Guardians after the ill fated sugar rush egg hunt providing an even smoother ride than anything else could. Seeing the edge of a hill swooping up and then dropping into what could only be described as a natural ski slope, Jack bent his knees into a deep bow, and then right at the ledge jumped for all he was worth high up into the air. Cackling with glee, the spirit flung his limbs spread eagle before tucking into a forward barrel roll summersault, and then topped off his trick with a neat landing accompanied by a wave of snow as he screeched to a halt. Throwing his arms up into the air, Jack whooped with joy at his accomplishment all the while bowing to an imaginary audience.
"Please, please," he laughed while bowing nonstop to his invisible fans "no applause, just throw money."
Suddenly Jack was struck with how quiet it was, and straightening up from his bent position, he cast his azure gaze across the frozen tundra with a slight pout "It's no fun without Bunny," he sighed.
….
"Hmmm…." Tooth hummed thoughtfully, one delicate finger tapping her lips "B6!"
"GRAH!" Pitch moaned "How is it that you always manage to find my battleship woman?!"
Tooth trilled a delighted giggle "Call it woman's intuition,"
"I'll call it just plain diabolical," Pitch pouted before walking over to the shelves full of board games "how about we play something that I actually have a chance at winning?"
Tooth smiled at her former enemy "Fine, I'll tell you my most dreaded secret…I'm horrible at Candy Land."
"Candy Land it is then!" The dark specter exulted lifting it off the shelf "But I better not find out that you are actually a master at this and are leading me into a trap."
"That's for me to know, and you to find out," The fairy purred with an evil glint in her eye.
"Alright, now I'm afraid," Pitch deadpanned as he began to set up the game.
Toothiana gave a mock gasp, one hand covering mouth in surprise "The Nightmare King is afraid of little old me?!" she giggled.
Pitch's eyebrows rose towards the ceiling "You better believe it," he hummed "and for good reason mind you."
The fairy merely chuckled but the light mood was slightly dampened when she noticed her game partner rub at his heart and give a worried frown "Pitch," she queried "you…ok?"
"Hm?" the dark spirit pursed his lips thoughtfully "I'm…not sure."
"Why, what's wrong?"
Pitch sighed "I've been getting small bursts of fear from the rabbit all night, and just now there was a particularly strong current coming from him."
Tooth rolled the dice, and gave a small grin at her good fortune before returning her gaze to the Boogeyman "Well Jack said that he had visited Bunny yesterday to convince him to get some rest, and according to sweet tooth, he had somehow managed to convince Aster to agreeing to have a snowboarding competition with him."
"That would account for the fear I guess," Pitch nodded "His growing nervousness about it during the night, and then his fear after actually getting on the snowboard would explain why I've been sensing such strong currents from him."
"There, you see," Tooth smiled comfortingly "there's nothing wrong. If I didn't know better I would say you're getting soft."
"I'm not going soft," Pitch pouted "I just can't shake the feeling that something is wrong."
Tooth gave an unladylike snort of amusement "Now you just sound like North."
The dark specter glared at her over the board and considered sticking his tongue out, but decided that such an action was too petulant. He was saved having to reply when a nearby window creaked open to reveal a forlorn winter spirit. Jack flew over to the couch and flopped into his favorite napping spot before heaving a sigh. Tooth and Pitch watched the boy, their faces a mask of amused confusion.
"Something wrong Jack?" Tooth asked gently.
"I bet he is merely depressed because Bunny beat him at Snowboarding," Pitch remarked in an attempt to lighten the suddenly heavy atmosphere.
"No, that would be great if it had happened," Jack muttered from his spot on the couch.
"So then what's gotten you upset," the fairy persisted, concern marring her features "did you and Aster have a fight?"
"No," Jack snorted "even that would have been preferable to being stood up."
"Stood up?" Pitch suddenly felt the waves of unease that had been afflicting him since the day before return ten times worse, throwing his stomach into nauseated turmoil "What do you mean stood up?"
"As in he broke his promise and never came," the boy pouted "Bunny never breaks his promises, no matter how stupid they may be, but for some reason he broke it this time. He's always saying how he's my big brother, but he's never been the type to leave his younger sibling standing in the snow waiting for hours only to find out that he wasn't actually going to come."
Tooth cast a panicked gaze to Pitch only to see the man once again rubbing his heart, his teeth worrying his bottom lip as his topaz eyes stared at the tiled floor "Pitch," the fairy began as her chest began to clench uncomfortably "please tell me that everything is ok, I mean, it is ok…isn't it?"
"What do you mean?" Jack sat up from where he had previously been lying down "Is something wrong that you're not telling me?"
"I don't know," Pitch murmured "but I'm willing to find out."
Jumping up from the table, the dark specter strode across the room towards the doorway "Come on Frost, we have a rabbit to find."
Jack gave a curt nod before hopping up and following their former enemy, pale fists clenched with anxious concern, the frost child leapt through the open window and sped towards the warren knowing that Pitch was probably already there "Please," Jack murmured softly "please be ok Kangaroo."
…
Aster groaned, flexing his paws, a pained whimper whispering from his lips as he felt the throbbing of broken bones grow in intensity as he regained consciousness. He was chained up, and flung like an unwanted doll in a stone cell, where he was he had no idea, but he didn't really have time to ponder his location as his captors had wasted no time in wreaking their unwarranted revenge on his body. Eyes still closed, the Easter spirit considered his condition, guessing that he had broken ribs accompanied by his shattered leg bone and fractured hip. Countless bruises littered his body not mention the cuts and gashes that now adorned his muscular frame, a token of affection by both Orion and Rayne.
"Well, well, well," a voice snickered from one side of the room "lookie who's awake?"
"Well, well, well," Aster snarled "lookie who's being an annoyin' dingbat?"
The figure seated in the corner on the wooden chair let out a hiss of disgust before stepping into the light "You don't have much room to be talking, rabbit. Especially considering that while you Guard Hope, and may have control over plants, the people who do the real work on welcoming Spring are spirits like me. You never give us the time of day, acting so superior, if anything you're the annoying pest, not me."
Bunny cracked one swollen eye open enough so to look at the Spring spirit towering over him "Rayne," he murmured thoughtfully "isn't that a girl's name?"
"Why you little-?!" Rayne darted forward and lifted aster up into the air long enough to land a solid punch across Bunny's face, causing the Pooka to fly backwards and hit the stone wall of his cell.
Sliding down to the floor, Bunny felt an agonized moan rattle in the base of his throat. He was in bad condition, and was in no way in any position to be snarky to captors, but Aster hated feeling helpless. He was a warrior, and if he couldn't fight with his paws, then he would at least fight back with his mouth. However that plan was becoming increasingly more difficult. The poison was creeping through his system, and Aster could only shudder as he felt the icy cold liquid slowly make its way towards his heart. According to his kidnappers, once the poison made it to his heart, there was no going back, he was as good as dead. His body would be alive, but his soul would be devoured by the fears and insecurities he had long kept at bay for the past few centuries. So that, plus the fact that the arrow was still sticking out of his flank and the wound had become putrid as an infection set in, only proved to make his fear mount in deeper and deeper tidal waves that threatened to drown him in their depths.
Another shudder shook him, causing his teeth to rattle in a barely audible chatter, he was so cold and so tired, and giving up was sounding sweeter and sweeter. Lifting his head up as far as he could manage in his weakened state, the Easter Bunny once again looked at the young man guarding him.
"Why?" Bunny murmured "Why are you doing this? What's the point?"
"What's the point?" Rayne laughed incredulously "The point is revenge. You have only one Holiday, and conveniently you're a Guardian, and so that makes you better than us? Do you even know what elemental spirits go through to prepare for and maintain their season? But you stomp through our carefully crafted work, all so you can hide your eggs, and you have never even once said 'Thank you' for all the time and effort we put in trying to make each spring lush and green."
"But how does that warrant beating me within an inch of my life, mate?" Bunny sighed laying his head back onto the floor weakly.
"Maybe it doesn't," Rayne shrugged carelessly before giving a wicked grin "but at least it makes me feel better."
A harsh cough wracked Bunny's frame, making his wheeze as he struggled to catch his breath, only to gag and spit a glob of blood onto the floor. Rayne smirked at the sight "Looks like you don't have much time left," he remarked "maybe a day, two days if you're lucky. I heard that there is some special way to fight this poison off without an antidote, but I don't know what it is, nor do I care to find out."
Suddenly the door to the cell swung open, revealing Orion and Alvern as they walked in and shut the heavy iron door behind them. "How's the prisoner?" the constellation smirked.
"Being annoying, as usual," Rayne growled as he hopped off his chair "now that you're here I'm going to take a break."
"Wait just a moment," Orion smiled maliciously "I was just going to do something I thought you would find amusing."
Rayne raised one eyebrow but said nothing, merely sitting back down as an answer.
"Wha-" Bunny gasped as he tried to raise himself up on trembling arms but crashing back to the floor with a pained grunt "What are ya plannin' on doin' ta me?"
"Well," Orion smirked "I was just thinking that it would be a waste to kill you, what with your fame as the Guardian of Hope, and especially now that you are famous among the stars for being the one to defeat me. So why not prove once and for all who is truly superior?"
Another bolt of fear lanced through Bunny, causing him to give a heavy swallow before answering in almost a whisper "And how do ya plan on doin' that?"
"The poison will kill any semblance of fight you have in you, leaving you a perfectly docile animal and…well, I've always wanted a pet."
Aster's lips curled back in a feral snarl as his ears plastered themselves to the back of his head "I ain't your pet!" the Pooka growled.
"Now now Aster," Orion chuckled darkly "don't be that way, surely you wouldn't want to start your new life on such bad terms with your new master."
Kneeling next to the Pooka, the constellation reached into his cloak and pulled out a black collar, and placed a booted foot between Bunny's shoulder blades, forcing him to keep still while he buckled the collar around the rabbit's neck. Aster thrashed and wriggled, trying to bite the hands that were attaching the cursed object onto his body, but soon the deed was done, and Bunny sat looking at the floor in shame and disgust. Orion smirked, and reached down to pat the Pooka on the nose, but Bunny took that opportunity to get one bite in, causing the hunter to rear back with a cry of pain as his hand quickly began to drip blood.
With a sneer of disdain, the constellation grabbed a remote from his cloak, and pressed a button, smiling wickedly as Aster let out a shriek of agony when the collar pumped electricity into his already injured body. The hunter watched for a moment, before finally releasing the Pooka from his torment, clicking the button to turn the collar off. Aster fell on the floor, limp as a wet rag, while whimpers of pain echoed from his throat.
"You see," Orion whispered darkly "you misbehave, then you will get punished, so I suggest that you be a good little bunny rabbit and never try another stunt like that ever again, do you understand me?"
Aster closed his eyes, terror from the poison, and humiliation from his current circumstance causing his eyes to burn and his throat to clench. Ducking his head, he begged his body not to betray him by crying, but he could already feel the scorching hot liquid burning the inside of his eyelids. Orion took this as another sign of rebellion, and gave Aster one more shot of the shock collar, reveling in the sobbing screams issuing from the warriors lungs.
"I said…" Orion snarled as he roughly grabbed Bunny by the chin and forced him to look up at him "do you understand?"
"…Yes…" Aster whispered weakly.
"Yes, what?" the hunter sneered.
"Yes…" Bunny gagged but the thought of getting another dose of the shock collar forced him to continue "…master…"
"Good boy."
