Ruined Chances.

This story has been prompted by Little Miss Bovver and H20xspelboundfanx and their prompts were Jason and Robbie's dad arrives at Hollyoaks village to fix his broken relationship with his sons, though not all is at it seems.

Enjoy!

Vinny Sanders was the perfect example of a deadbeat dad. In the summer of '95 he and Sandy Roscoe had entered a passionate, yet turbulent relationship. Both knew it was never meant to last and was just going to be a bit of fun for the pair, though neither had a problem with this fact.

The late Alan Roscoe had been dead for just over a year by that point and the then mother of three was just about ready to try and enter new relationships once more, her heartbreak still as raw and painful as it had been all those months ago.

Vinny was the perfect distraction and just the person Sandy needed to get back on track. He was funny and good looking and the pair had always shared a natural chemistry, even though they were nothing like her and Alan had been, Sandy was content to see what the future would hold for them.

That was until she had found out she was pregnant, carrying the child of the man that she had promised herself, she was only going to have a simple fling with. She didn't know how she was going to cope, but Vinny's reaction when she had told him had flared up a single shot of hope in her.

He had promised to be there for her and his child when she'd told him. Had gone to every single hospital appointment with her, had seemed delighted when he learnt that Sandy was having twins and when Jason and Robbie were born, he had appeared ready to be a dad.

It wasn't perfect, Sandy wasn't going to pretend that for a moment, but she loved Vinny, nowhere near as much as she had loved Alan, but it was enough. She grew content with what she had, her five perfect boys and a man who was more than happy to play the part of dad to three children who were of no relation to him, though never once trying to take place of their real father.

But Vinny was never meant to be a father, not a good one anyway and he found himself spooking at his domesticated life, wishing for the exciting adventures that all his friends seemed to be having, so desperate for a bit of danger and trouble, Vinny found himself in the bed of his next door neighbour, a beautiful and busty redhead by the name of Laura Jenkins.

But secrets like that are meant to revealed to the world, and Vinny found himself growing complacent with his illicit affair, letting Laura over to the house when he knew Sandy and the kids were out at work and school, and soon enough they were caught.

Sandy was heartbroken with what she found and promptly chucked the man who she thought she had loved out on his backside.

She wasn't evil though, she knew she couldn't cut him out of the kids lives forever, especially Jason and Robbie's. Her three eldest never had a chance at getting to know their dad properly, Sandy wasn't going to do the same thing to her twins.

So she gave Vinny a chance, let him look after his sons every other weekend and for a few nights during school holidays. And that arrangement worked for a bit too. He'd come round promptly at 10am on a Saturday morning and drop them off at 6pm on a Sunday night, just in time for dinner.

But 10 am soon became 12pm and 6pm turned to 4pm, until the twins were spending barely any time with their dad. It didn't just stop there though, and by the time Jason and Robbie were seventeen, the only time they had any contact with Vinny Sanders was on birthdays and Christmases, when they both received a crumpled twenty pound note in a cheap card.

Neither boy had much hope that their Dad would change and both said so many a time, in fact, so disgusted by their own measly excuse of a father, they had gotten their last name officially changed to Roscoe on their fifteenth birthday, to their families mix of shock and amused delight.

Though just because they repeated that they didn't need Vinny in their life over and over again, both out loud and in their heads, it didn't stop the tiny bit of hope flaring every birthday and Christmas, didn't stop them hoping deep down that maybe, just maybe this year would be different.

Instead of some stupid money, their Dad would be on their doorstep, millions of apologies at his lips, ready to own up to his fatherly duties and actually be a part of the Roscoe twin's lives.

That was where the daydream ended in similarity for Jason and Robbie though.

Jason knew it was stupid, but he couldn't hope but wish that his Dad would someday want to be part of his life and truly make up for all of the absences. He wouldn't welcome him with open arms, but Jason knew he'd listen to what his Dad had to say to him and make just as much effort to rebuild the tatters of their broken relationship.

Robbie however, had taken the basic abandonment from his own flesh and blood and had twisted it. A small part of him wanted to be the perfect son to his dad, but that part was easily squished down by the anger he felt at the shit treatment he'd received over the last seventeen years.

Because he was angry, so angry that he was treated like a nobody and if ever given the chance, he wanted to show Vinny Sanders just what that felt like and more. He knew, if he ever laid eyes on his absentee father, he was going to make him suffer, just like he had for all those years.

Neither boy expected either scenario to ever happen though and why would it? After all, the last time they had seen their dad had been when they were thirteen years old and he had taken them to a football match. It had been an awful afternoon on all sides and there had been no attempt to recreate that for good reason.

But that all changed the day that Vinny Sanders arrived in Hollyoaks Village, determined to see his sons for the first time in four years.

}}}}}}}}}}

It was a normal Thursday evening for the Roscoe family. Every member plus Fraser and Grace were crowded around the large dinner table, trying to choke down the burnt food that Sandy had 'lovingly' crafted for them.
"This is gorgeous love," Fraser said with a forced smile, nudging his only remaining daughter's leg with his foot as she not so discreetly spat out a piece of her cremated chicken into her napkin.

"Yeah, you'll have to give me the recipe sometime," Grace followed with, flashing the older woman a brilliant smile. She had only been at the village for a few weeks, but was determined to stay on a more permanent basis after learning that Mercedes McQueen had been involved in her sister's untimely demise.

Sandy had kindly given her place to stay until she found somewhere a little more permanent, meaning Grace had to play the angelic and doting daughter to Fraser, a role she was not suited to in the slightest.

Before the Roscoe matriarch could reply to the unusual interest in her cooking, the doorbell rang out loud and clear, halting any and all conversations that were being held between the close knit family. Being the closest to the door, Freddie got to his feet and went to greet the family's newest visitor, slightly confused as to who would be calling at such a time.

The sight he was met with shocked him to the core, the young mechanic instantly recognising the man who had fathered two of his brothers, even if he was now slightly balding and in possession of a small, yet oddly round beer belly.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he snarled, blocking the entrance into the house as best as he could, whilst also trying his best to not alert his family to the newest presence. Life seemed to be finally going right for the Roscoe family and Freddie was not going to let the lowlife in front of him ruin that, no matter what he was forced to do.

"Freddie," Vinny smiled weakly, looking slightly ill at the younger man's threatening demeanour. "You doing well? You look well. You're taller than I remember, a lot taller. Are those tattoos? They're very... nice."

Freddie watched Vinny babble on for a few moments, enjoying how uncomfortable he seemed to be, though it still bothered him as to why he was watching Vinny looked so on edge. He hadn't seen the man stood in front of him for years and he never heard good things about him either.

If he was here to see Jason and Robbie, well he had another thing coming. The last time his youngest brothers had had a day with their dad flashed through Freddie's head and a surge of anger washed over him. They had both been so pissed off when they had returned home, faces stormy as they described Vinny's latest girlfriend and the events that had transpired halfway through the football game, resulting in them all leaving early, with both boys vowing to never talk to their father again.

"Freds who is it?" Sandy called, her footsteps drawing closer before Freddie could react. He turned as Sandy spotted Vinny on the doorstep, shock, annoyance and anger flashing through her eyes in a split second.
What was left did nothing but irritate Freddie though, as he saw the concern in his mother's eyes as she took in the pathetic form of her ex. "Vinny? What are you doing here?"

"Hello Sands," Vinny said, his tone suddenly a lot surer than it had been with Freddie. "Can I come in?"

}}}}}}}}}

"Well not that this isn't lovely," Grace drawled, playing with a platinum lock as she shot Vinny an unimpressed look. "But I think I should be off. Make sure Trevor hasn't burnt down the club. Thanks for dinner Sandy." Without a second glance, Grace stood and marched out of the house, front door clicking shut behind her.

"I should probably go too," Fraser said, also getting to his feet, kissing Sandy briefly as he went to follow his daughter. "This is family business, I don't want to intrude."

No-one said the obvious, the thing that was begging to be said but just couldn't. Because it didn't feel like Fraser was intruding. In the few short months since getting with Sandy he had done so much for the family, had supported them with the tiniest of things and showed no sign of abandoning them when things were going to get tough, he had done more for the Roscoe clan than Vinny had ever done and probably ever would.

So Sandy watched the man she loved walk out of the house before turning to the man she had loved. "Why are you here Vinny?"

"I can't even see my own flesh and blood with out getting interrogated now?" Vinny said, trying to sound shocked, though it didn't have the effect that he so wished, in fact, he almost sounded somewhat comical.

"No you can't," Robbie growled, folding his arms and glaring heavily at his dad. "You ain't wanted to see me or Jase for four years, why would you want to now?"

"That's not true. I thought about you both every single day, it was just difficult. I didn't know what to say, didn't know what we'd do if we did meet up."

"Sorry if we don't believe that," Jason snapped, moving to stand next to his twin, silently showing Vinny that they weren't going to be easy to break. "So hows... Carlisha?"

"Carmeena. And last time I checked, she was fine."
"Last time?" Jason asked, hating himself for asking, though it wasn't because he cared, more that he was simply too curious for his own good at the best of times.

"We broke up, about two and a half years ago. Last time I heard, she was sunning it up in Ibiza."

"Pity," Sandy deadpanned, looking over to her youngest sons, hating how worked up they were getting at just the presence of their father. Why was he even here? He shouldn't be here, he hadn't even cared for his two children for the last four years, so why did he now?

Although Sandy didn't know why her ex was darkening her doorstep, she knew it couldn't be good and she was determined to find out exactly why he was here, because he was not screwing with her boys lives, not again.

"Look I just want to see my kids there's nothing wrong with that."

"No there's not, but only taking the time out of your 'busy life' for us when it suits you, well that's more than crap," Robbie snapped, clenching his fists, readying himself up for a fight.

"I've messed up I know I have, but surely the most important thing is that I want to be part of your life now." The twins shared a loaded glance, trying to work out whether they should give their formerly absentee father a chance.

"Why are you even here?" Jason eventually sighed, turning back to his dad.

"I'm, uh getting married," Vinny said after a short pause, surprised that he was even being listened to. The sudden revelation shocked the Roscoe family into silence, before Sandy regained her footing and stared at her ex.

"Finally growing up are we?" Ignoring the blonde's icy tones, Vinny took a step forward, though as he moved, the three eldest brothers also took a step, blocking Robbie and Jason ever so slightly. He paused, looking at the three mechanics with a desperate air in his demeanour, though didn't make another move.

"I want you to meet her, after all, she will be your stepmum in a few weeks. You'll absolutely adore Geri and she can't wait to meet both of you."

"No," Robbie said through gritted teeth, glaring heavily at his dad.

"Wh- what?" Vinny asked, startled by Robbie's pure defiance. His sons had changed so much in just a few short years, more than Vinny would have thought possible. But Jason and Robbie weren't little boys anymore, hanging onto their dad's every word, no they were young men with their own opinions of the world.

Vinny had little doubt that what they thought of him and his parenting skills was more than unflattering.

"I said no," Robbie repeated, cocking an eyebrow as Vinny just gawped, enjoying the power he had over the man who had made his life hell for years. "You're nothing to us, absolutely nothing. And even if you were, well we probably wouldn't go, there's only going to be a new one next time we blink."

Vinny winced at the implication, though had no words to defend himself, after all it was true. Growing up, the twins felt there was a revolving door to their dad's flat, with the amount of new girlfriends they were introduced to in the space of just a few short weeks, they had little belief that this habit of his would have changed, even if he was now open to getting married.

"Geri's different. We've been together for just over two years and I do love her. It would mean so much to both of us if you'd come down for the wedding."

"Yeah well isn't that sweet. I think we've got plans though," Robbie snarled, causing Vinny to flinch once more.

"Just go," Jason sighed, and although he wasn't showing the anger that Robbie was, it didn't mean he was any happier with the latest situation they were faced with, just that he was better at hiding his feelings than his twin was.

"Boys," Vinny tried once more, his voice cracking over the word and sounding so hopeless and pathetic, that it would make the average person feel sorry for him, though the Roscoes were too accustomed to the act to even be affected.

"They told you to leave," Joe growled taking a step forward so he was towering over the man stood in front of him. "So go, before we make you." Not wishing for a confrontation, Vinny quickly scuttled out of the house, throwing a backward glance to Robbie and Jason, the hurt in his eyes only growing when all they did was glare at him.

When the front door clicked shut, the whole family seemed to deflate as one. "I'm going out," Robbie said, shrugging off Sandy's hand when she placed it on his shoulder trying to comfort him as best he could. He was gone in seconds and Jason went to move.

"I should go after him, make sure he doesn't do something stupid." Before anymore could be said, Jason had ran through the back door, hot on the heels of his twin.

}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

"I thought you'd be here," Jason said, his tone calm as he entered the folley, raising an eyebrow as he watched Robbie take another drag from his cigarette.

"I can't believe he's come back. Like what the fuck J? He was out of our lives, I never thought we'd see him again and I was happy about that."

"I know Rob, so was I," Jason sighed, taking a seat next to his brother, wincing as the coldness of the stone bench hit him. "You don't reckon he's being serious do you?"

"Oh don't tell me you bought that pile of crap? Of course he weren't being serious," Robbie spat, furious to hear that his twin was willing to give their dad another chance, especially after the fiasco of their last meeting. "He's useless or don't you remember what happened last time we saw him?"

"Of course I do Rob. You wound up his new missus and he stuck up for her instead of us." "

Not like it was the first time either. He always cared for his bit of the week over his own damn kids, that won't have changed."

"But it might have Rob. His new girlfriend, well fiancée, may actually be decent this time. She has to be if he popped the question to her."

"Yeah I wouldn't bet on it."

Ignoring Robbie's comments, Jason continued. "This could be it though Rob, he may actually properly settle down and try to be a proper dad to us again."

"That stupid optimism of yours is going to get you in serious trouble one day Jase." Robbie snorted, though he kept his tongue shut on how he actually felt on the situation. He didn't trust his dad for one second, the older man had used and broken it too many times in the past, but he could see that Jason was serious.

Robbie wasn't any less wary of his Dad's true intentions than he had been and there was no way he was going to go down to the wedding, but for now he'd bite his tongue and watch out for Jason, hoping that his own beliefs were wrong, so Jason wasn't hurt. He didn't feel too hopeful though and mentally prepared himself for the fireworks that were sure to come.

}}}}}}}}}}}}

The rest of the Roscoes took the news that Jason was intending on going to Vinny's wedding with a pinch of salt, though no one actually said a word to his face. After all, he had heard everything that there was to say from Robbie, and if he wasn't going to listen to his own twin, well the others knew they wouldn't have any more luck.

He didn't look it, but Jason could be the most stubborn out of all the Roscoe's and never backed down easily, especially when he was convinced he was doing the right thing. The fact that he was giving his dad a chance had left a slightly awkward air in the Roscoe household though, meaning Jason was choosing to spend more and more time with his father, trying to ease the tension with at least one side of his family whilst he could.

Vinny was staying at a local B&B for the week, and Jason knew he didn't have a lot of time to make up for lost years, but he was willing to try with the limited time he was given, elated to see his father putting in just as much effort.

It wasn't perfect but Jason honestly believed that Vinny was trying his best and felt like maybe they were getting somewhere and maybe one day, they could be like the average father and son. On the day before Vinny was due to leave Hollyoaks, he and Jason found themselves wandering through the main square of the village, making light conversation and trying to treasure their time with one another.

"So I was thinking you could come down to London for a weekend sometime," Vinny said, watching as Jason greeted Fraser and Grace with a smile. The two Black's were across the street, flitting in and out of the club with various decorations for a themed night that was being held in just a few short hours.

"Yeah that'd be cool," Jason said with an eager grin, already looking forward to the potential time with his dad, something he hadn't realised he had missed until he was given the chance to spend some quality time with the older man. Jason had been pleasantly surprised by what Vinny was actually like, having ruined his earlier memories of weekends spent with his Dad, when Vinny had basically abandoned both him and Robbie. He had pictured Vinny to be a slob, to be useless and a nasty piece of work, though he was nothing like that.

Instead he was funny and deceivingly intelligent and Jason found himself fully enjoying time spent with Vinny, hoping that one day Robbie would feel the same way to their dad. So far Robbie had barely spent any time with the older man, only exchanging a few gruff words if he had to, though Jason knew that if given some time to calm down, Robbie would eventually give their Dad a chance.

"If you do come down, it'll have to be in the holidays, I don't want your grades suffering because of me, after all you're a smart boy Jase. I can see you going to a good uni."

"You reckon?" Jason asked, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Mum will like that though, she's determined that at least one of her kids is going to go to uni, though I don't mind that she's pinned her hopes on me. I've always wanted to go."

"I'm sure you'll get in son, you've always been smart. Obviously didn't get your brains from your old dad. Though it's not the grades that are the problems nowadays, it's the money. If you don't have enough, you're basically buggered," Vinny said with a shrug. Jason couldn't help but note that although Vinny seemed to be completely comfortable with his tone of voice, his body language was anything but confident.

The teenager shrugged it off, knowing he was just being ridiculous, instead focusing solely on the conversation, not wanting one of his final afternoons with his Dad to be ruined by his suspicions.

"Well mum's been putting money into a fund for like my whole life. We've all got one and then when we hit eighteen we can do what we want with it, as long as it's not too stupid. Ziggy went travelling with some mates, but I'm thinking of using it for uni. It'll at least stop me from falling into crippling debt for the first few months."

"So you've got a lot then?" Vinny asked, taking a step forward and looking oddly eager about Jason's saving funds.

"A fair bit, after all, mum's been adding to it for the last seventeen years."

"Would you ever consider using the money for something else, especially if you knew you'd get it all back within the month."

"Like what?" Jason asked, having a horrible feeling on where Vinny was going with this, praying that he was wrong and had completely misread the situation.

"Like for me... I've fallen in debt, got myself involved with the wrong people and now they want money. I've got no telling what they'll do if I don't pay up, I really need your help Jase."

"So this is why you came up here," Jason said, trying to comprehend how everything had turned on its head in mere seconds. He had honestly thought he was being given another chance to fix the mess of a relationship he had with his father, to find out it was all a lie, well Jason didn't even know where to start, what to even think. "You didn't want to see me or Robbie did you? Didn't want us coming down to the wedding, if there even is a wedding that is."

"Of course there's a wedding, which is why I need your help too," Vinny sighed, looking completely sorry for what he was saying, though Jason couldn't find it in himself to care any more. "Geri could be in danger if I don't pay back the money."

"But that's the only reason you came up to see us isn't it? Not because you wanted to see your children, but because you wanted to rob us blind."

"Look I just came up here to see if it was any sort of possibility. I've been a crap dad to you and Robbie over the years, but you've both turned into wonderful young men, I want to get to know you both better if you'd just let me."

"So I'd give you even more money?" Jason's question was met with silence, a testament to Vinny's guilt. His blood was boiling and Jason wanted nothing more than to punch the nearest object, preferably his father's face. "You disgust me you know that, I can't believe you could do something that bloody evil!"

Vinny opened his mouth, apologies spilling out at a hundred miles per hour, though his pure cowardice infuriated Jason even more than he was already. He lifted his arm, ready to hit the pure scum in front of him, to try and get him to feel a fraction of the pain he was now experiencing, though before he could do anything Jason found himself being physically pushed back.

"What are you doing?" He screamed at Fraser, struggling against the club owner's iron grip as Grace told Vinny where to go. "Let go of me!"

"Not a chance sport," Fraser muttered, fruitlessly trying to guide Jason to the stairs. "You're not thinking straight and you'll only do something you regret if I don't stop you."

"You don't understand, he-"

"We heard everything," Grace cut in, arching a brow. "That man is scum, but violence isn't going to fix everything. Just forget him babe, he'll get whats coming to him one day."

Jason severely doubted that, though he stilled slightly, just wishing he was at home and could pretend that this had never happened. He felt so stupid, trusting a man that was nothing more than a waste of space, his family were right all along and Jason cursed his blind faith in absolutely everyone.

}}}}}}}}}}}}

Jason didn't feel any better the next day, still angry at himself for being so gullible and trusting, and furious at Vinny for betraying him in such a manner.

He'd overheard Fraser talking to Sandy about it late last night and though he was annoyed at the lack of privacy, he was also kind of grateful to the older man, because none of the others had come up to him and asked him why he wasn't seeing Vinny before he left to go back to London, having obviously been briefed on what had gone down between father and son not even twenty four hours ago.

He half heartedly checked his phone, not surprised in the slightest when he saw that he had a missed call from the very man himself. He opened it and pressed his phone to his ear, already knowing what the message would be saying, after all, the last thirteen had been pretty identical, why would this one be any different?

"Jason, please just answer the phone would you? I need to explain this whole thing, but it wasn't meant to be like this at all. I do want to get to you know, build a proper father-son relationship and I wish I had done it years ago, not now, when it's way too late anyway.

"It wasn't my intention to use you though, not in a million years, but you don't even know what sort of mess I've got myself into. These guys I owe money to, they're dangerous, they may hurt me or Geri if I don't pay my debt off and I can't let Geri get hurt. She's done nothing wrong and I love her so much."

The message ended with a beep and Jason sighed, chucking his phone to the other side of the room. He knew what he had to do, if it was the right thing he didn't know, but he knew it was needed to be done.

}}}}}}}}}

Vinny Sanders painted a pathetic figure in the bus shelter as Jason walked down the street, the familiar sense of anger bubbling underneath his skin, increasing with every step. When he was only a few feet away from the shelter, Vinny looked up, having heard the footsteps.

"Jason, but what-" Vinny's words died in his throat, having not expected to see his son in a million years, much less mere hours after the events of yesterday. His eyes bulged as Jason lifted an envelope from his rucksack, passing it over to his father, who remained silent as he opened it, revealing the dozen of notes that were held within.

"There's not a lot in there and probably not enough to pay off all your debt, but that's all my wages from the garage that I've saved up. I was going to go to Leeds with Rob and some guys from school, though I guess your needs are above mine," Jason said shrugging, though there was nothing caring or forgiving in his voice, leaving Vinny even more confused.

Jason looked straight at his father, shrugging the bag back onto both his shoulders as he spoke. "That's not a sign that we're be going to be okay. That's a reminder. To make sure you never come back here. I don't want to ever see you again, I don't want any sort of contact with you.

"You pretend that you love me and Robbie, and that you want to be part of our lives, and maybe you do deep down, but you're never going to win father of the year, it was stupid to even pretend. I don't need you Vinny, I have my whole family looking out for me, and I don't need a piece of scum like you, fucking up everything. So take that money, marry Geri and never try to contact me again."

Vinny said nothing, though it looked like he had a million things on his tongue. As he opened his mouth, no doubt to try and fix the ruins of his broken relationship with one of his two sons, Jason turned away, walking to the fountain where Robbie was stood, having watched the whole exchange.

"Why did you do that J?" Robbie asked, shooting a confused look to his brother. "He's scum you said it yourself, and you're never going to see that money ever again."

"I know," Jason sighed, trying to think of the best way to explain his action, though in full knowledge that Robbie would never properly understand. "That money will keep him off our backs though. I don't ever want to see Vinny again and that wasn't just to help him out with whatever shit he's gotten himself into this time, that's to make sure he never darkens our doorstep again."

Robbie nodded at his twin's words, clearly mulling over what had just been said. "All right, I get it."

Jason didn't fully believe that, though he said nothing as the two brothers walked back into the village, ready to start a new chapter of their lives, without Vinny Sanders shadow casting a dark spell over their lives.

It wasn't a fairytale ending, wasn't what either twin had been hoping for, but that was real life. Nothing ever happened like you wanted it to, but you moved on from that and grew stronger with each and every battle. Robbie and Jason Roscoe were stronger than ever, having fought the hardest battle of their lives, though in full knowledge that they could now face anything that was thrown at them.
