The school grounds were devoid of life, almost completely. It was Saturday and most of the Roselia girls had gone to do whatever girls who weren't Eve did on there weekends. Probably spent time with friends or family. At 10 years old, Eve couldn't exactly claim the ability to do that.
Eve lay back on the branch she was currently laying in, the leaves blocking her from view as she read her book of choice for the day. She reveled silently in her own personal bubble. She never really enjoyed being with others, preferring to spend her time alone
'Hey!' A voice called from below her. Startled she flinched, almost fell from her perch and in the process of catching herself, dropped her book. She cursed when she did not hear it hit ground. This meant human contact.
She jumped down from the branch, automatically curling up into herself as she came face to face with a girl she knew. Dawn Berlitz.
Dawn was a cheery girl, constantly smiling and nice to everyone. She was everything Eve wasn't. Where Eve was timid, awkward and melancholy, Dawn was ougoing, cool and upbeat. Eve wore large glasses, massive jumpers to cover shirts stained with food and tea and skirts to her ankles making her look out of place for such a fancy school while Dawn was the picture of wealth and status with her fitted blazers, cute skirts to just above her knees, pristine white shirts.
But today, Dawns apperance made Eve do a double take. Tears marked her face, she was dressed all in black and her hands wobbled as she held out Eves book to her. Eve took it hesitantly.
'I'm sorry i startled you' the nerves in Dawns voice struck Eve dumb 'i just saw your hair poking out the tree... I em.. needed to talk and you were the first person i found but its-' and suddenly Eve knew.
She smiled gently towards the blue haired girl, nodding her head and sitting down. Dawns face flooded with relief and she sat down eagerly.
'Who was it?' Eve asked quietly. Dawn flinched and looked to the side
'My Dad' she answered looking at Eve with sad curiousity 'how did you know.' Eve only tapped her hand over her heart in answer. Dawn understood.
'When?'
Eve closed her eyes 'About... 2 years ago. It was my Mum.' A hand touched hers. She opened her eyes and suddenly she felt like she didn't want to be alone. Dawns eyes showed sympathy, knowing, a shared experience. They connected. In that moment, both girls knew they were already closer to each other than anyone else simply by this one shared moment.
'I'm Dawn Berlitz. What are you reading? Will you read it to me?'
'I'm Evelyn Strange. I'm reading Alice in Wonderland its one of my favourites. Should i start from the beginning?'
At 10, Dawn and Eve had lost a parent and gained a sister.
Present day
Dawn and Eve sat below their tree, as they always did on a Saturday afternoon and Eve read to Dawn from her book of choice. Dawn looked at her best friend and thought of how much had changed over the last 7 years. They had gained new friends to form a close knit group, Eve had grown out of her awkwardness and though still slightly timid and petite, she had began to dress less like a grandmother and more like she should. In Dawns mind anyway. She was dating a good man, a teacher no less and yet she always found time for Dawn whenever she could. She had been weened off the anti-depressants and was now emotionally stable. Dawn could never be happier.
'Daaaawn! You're not listening!'
'Yeah! Yeah I am, Mrs. Havisham, bats**t crazy i got it.
'Yoou' Eve pointed an accusing finger at Dawn 'were staring at that Paul guy from class.' Was she? Dawn let her eyes focus and sure enough, the boy from their class was in her line of vision, sitting against a wall, scowling at whatever he was listening to.
'I was not!' Dawn scoffed 'I was just thinking!' Eve smirked and looked down, choosing to refrain from commenting. As Eve continued, Dawn looked up at the boy again. Though she wasn't before, she was certainly staring now. He seemed grumpy, standoffish, downright BAD. Dawn felt herself shiver and she smirked.
Dawn could handle bad. Dawn liked bad. Dawn WAS bad.
She touched Eves shoulder and when she was looking, Dawn nodded in his direction. 'Now that you mention it... Give me a month?
Eve frowned in thought 'hmm... He seems stubborn. Amd remember other day when you were being all fangirly and he thought you were annoying? Maybe he can't handle that. But you ARE Dawn Berlitz. Give it 2 and a half?'
Dawn smirked '2 and a half it is?' Eve said a silent prayer for Paul Shinji. Dawn would surely teach him the reason Hurricanes were given female names.
