Secrets and Lies Revealed
This chapter has been prompted by H20xspelboundfanx and the summary for this prompt is It was really by chance that Jason found Fraser's little black book that Joe had been hiding, but he had been arguing with Freddie you see, and well, it just sort of... appeared. But then Fraser also arrived, and when he realises that another Roscoe boy is in the know about his double life, well it's a bit too much for him, and he knows he has to silence both Freddie and Jason, will he succeed?
Jason couldn't remember when he had learnt about Freddie's hidden feelings for Lindsey, but it felt like it had been forever. The youngest Roscoe had always been the most intuitive of the family, picking up on things that no-one else would notice even at a young age, so it was really no surprise that it was him who connected the dots and worked out that Freddie fancied Joe's fancy new doctor girlfriend, when he brought her round for dinner one night.
Jason hadn't said anything though, he wasn't going to break apart the family because of a silly little crush, though the guilt he felt at keeping what he knew secret grew with each passing day, as he saw not only Joe and Lindsey getting more serious with one another, but Freddie's feelings for the brunette growing too.
He hated it, but for years he kept his silence, until it became second nature to look away when Freddie was hugging Lindsey tightly, the expression on his face making it obvious that he wished the embrace meant more to her than it did.
Jason knew he should probably tell someone what he knew, even if it was only Freddie himself (it must be hell for his older brother, keeping it all bottled up like he was doing), but he could never quite work up the courage, so the teen stayed silent, watching from the shadows as he prayed that Freddie's feelings would die down and their family would stay the close knit clan that it was, without being ripped separate at the seams.
But then Joe disappeared, he vanished without a sight, with the only thing to explain his sudden absence being a hurried text to Lindsey, explaining he was ending their relationship and that he wouldn't be coming back to Chester.
It felt wrong believing that text, after all Joe had never been one to run away from his troubles, least of all abandon his family like he had done, but the proof was there in his empty wardrobe, and the text that offered a weak explanation at best.
None of the Roscoe's liked it, but it was the best they had and they just had to deal and hope that Joe would re-emerge at some point in the not so distant future. The few first few weeks without his eldest brother had been difficult but Jason had learnt to cope easily enough, though he was left at a loss when he arrived home early from school one day, to come face to face with Freddie trying to make a move on a shocked Lindsey.
To the doctor's defence she had pushed Freddie away and had quickly left, hissing that she still wasn't over Joe and never would be under her breath. The sight of Freddie was truly despairing, but Jason was too angry to sympathise with the mechanic.
Joe hadn't been gone for five minutes and Freddie was newly married for God's sake, he shouldn't be pulling stupid stunts like he was and Jason was damned if he was going to let that go, he had done nothing for close to six years by this point, but this was the final straw.
"What the hell Freds?" He asked, stepping into the living room and letting his presence be known. "You can't just do that to Lindsey, to Joe!"
"Jase," Freddie gasped, shocked at the newest arrival, his mind furiously trying to come up with an excuse, to get his youngest brother off of the scent. "That.. That wasn't what it looked like."
"Save it, I've known how you feel about Lindsey for years now."
"You have?" Freddie asked, eyes widening as he realised that he hadn't been as discrete about his feelings for Lindsey as he had thought he had been, and if now Jason, Sandy and Robbie knew, who else did as well?
"And I haven't said anything, I hoped that you'd move on, thought you had with Sinead, but you obviously haven't!"
"You can't tell anyone, please J no-one can know." Freddie begged desperately, knowing if Jason said anything it would all be over. Sure there was no Joe to contend with anymore, but the whole family believed the eldest brother would no doubt turn up one day, so him making a move on his almost sister in law was the worst thing possible.
The fact that Freddie really knew why Joe wasn't answering his phone whenever Sandy desperately called made his recent betrayal even worse. His brother was dead, and as one of the only few people who knew, Freddie should honour his memory in the way that Joe deserved, not trying to kiss the unknowing widow.
"I haven't said anything for six years because I thought it was best, but now I know I was just being stupid," Jason continued, unaware of the hidden plight that Freddie was currently going through. "People deserve to know what you just tried, especially Sinead, you remember her right? Your wife who absolutely dotes on you and would do whatever she could to help you out. I was happy to keep my silence before today, but seeing what you just did, well you pushed it too far Freds and I can't keep quiet any more."
"Jason!" Freddie cried as his youngest brother turned heel and went to move to the kitchen. "Look just wait J, please!" Jason remained silent, though he paused and turned to look back at his brother who had followed him. "Just don't say anything bro, this could ruin everything."
"Well you should of thought about that before you tried to make a move on Lindsey!" Freddie didn't remember a conscious decision on what happened next, he just knew that he had to keep Jason quiet before he ruined everything, ruined his life. Before he knew it, Freddie had lunged forward, tightly gripped either side of Jason's hoodie and pushing him to the wall.
"You keep quiet okay Jase? Mum's already up the wall about Joe and you getting sent down, she really doesn't need this too."
"Get off me Freddie," Jason snarled, not backing down from his brother. "You say what you want but I'm not keeping quiet anymore and there's nothing you can do about it." Seeing the defiance in Jason's eyes made Freddie want to scream, there was no way he was going to back down and the older Roscoe saw his life going down the pan in that very moment.
Sure, both Sandy and Sinead both knew how he felt about Lindsey, but it was one thing knowing that he had feelings for her, and another completely knowing that he had made a move on her. He would be completely alienated by everyone he knew and the thought of that made Freddie want to be sick.
He relinquished his grip on Jason and took a step back, breathing deeply to try and calm his nerves, so that he could hopefully get the whole sorry mess sorted out calmly, without any sort of violence, though Freddie knew he'd need to calm down for that to be truly successful.
The movement was too sudden for Jason though, and he found himself slipping, arms flying out wildly to break his fall. As he fell, the younger lad managed to grab onto one of the drawers, though his weight was too great and in less than a second Jason found himself on the floor, surrounded by everything that had been in the drawer that he had brought crashing down with him just seconds ago.
And in the pile of crap that now covered the kitchen floor was a very familiar black book. Freddie stopped breathing as he saw the very thing he had been looking relentlessly for in the last few weeks, the pieces of tape still attached to it indicating that Joe had stuck Fraser's business book onto the bottom of the drawer when he had been told to hide it on Freddie's wedding day.
It had been a good hiding spot and Freddie would have never thought to look there, if it hadn't been for Jason.
Said brother instantly noticed that Freddie had spotted something of great importance to him and followed the direction to where he was looking, clocking the small black book in seconds. Before Freddie could do anything to stop him, Jason had lunged for it, wanting more answers and still sore about Freddie's most recent threats, though instead of anything embarrassing that he could use for blackmail material later on in life, Jason was presented with various numbers, names and scribbled down plans.
"This is, but this is Fraser's writing," he breathed after a moment after flicking through a few pages, looking up to Freddie to confirm his suspicions. The silence he received was more than enough confirmation for Jason and he felt his confusion growing even more.
"What even is this all? Because it really looking like Fraser's caught up in something serious." Freddie sighed as he realised that yet another person was caught up in the mess that was his life. He wished he could just deny it and let Jason think up of another wild and convoluted plot, but that was never going to happen and if it did, well his younger brother had already read too much and would have started to piece things together in his mind, anything Freddie tried to tell him wouldn't go down well.
"Jase, I know this sounds mad, but you have to pretend you haven't seen none of this," Freddie said, hoping his desperate plea would be enough to convince Jason to forget about this whole thing and just go back to worrying about him copping off with Lindsey.
"Seen none of what?" A very familiar voice said from the kitchen entrance way, confusion seeping into his tone. The two brothers whirled around as one, exchanging worried glances with each other as they met Fraser's eyes, his brows only raising in response.
"Oh nothing really, just a little joke between me and Jase," Freddie said with a false smile, though he doubted his lie was convincing. It didn't feel convincing.
"Well don't stop on my account then boys, I was just here-" Fraser trailed off as he noticed the book still clutched tightly in Jason's hands. "Where did you get that?" Jason shot a glance to Freddie before he spoke, the new information he had just learnt still whirling around in his mind at a million miles per hour, still too disjointed to make any sort of sense.
To his annoyance, Freddie didn't even blink and Jason had to think on his feet and decide what the best course of action would be.
"Um, it was just in the drawer. Me and Freds, well it... fell out when we were arguing."
"And have you looked in it?" Fraser snapped, taking a step forward, desperate to get the book back and out of potential harms way. One of his son-in-laws finding out about his other life was bad enough, but now a second?
"No, no I ain't looked," Jason stuttered when he saw the minute shake of Freddie's head from the corner of his eye. Despite him wanting to do anything but, Jason passed the book over to Fraser, a shot of fear hitting him when he saw just how delighted his stepdad now was.
If it was really just a poxy notebook, then Fraser would never look so happy, it just meant that Jason's earlier suspicions were right however.
The older man was hiding a lot from the family, and the youngest Roscoe just knew that Freddie was well in the know. "Well thanks for returning it boys, I'd be lost without this old thing," Fraser said with an easy smile, and somehow that scared Jason even more, as he was left to wonder just how much of Fraser was a mask, a façad, hiding the darker undertones of his other life.
All he wanted in that moment was answers, but Jason knew that was never going to happen, so he had to be smart about the whole thing.
"Well I need to go back to college, so I'll see you both later?"
"Of course son," Fraser said with an easy smile, whilst Freddie only nodded, his eyes not once leaving the book clutched tightly in Fraser's hands. He had been so close, had almost won and if Fraser had just been a few seconds later, well he would be in a prison by that night, but no, his step-dad had the book back once more and Freddie just wanted to scream at the unfairness of it all, as he realised just how lost he was.
"Did he see anything?" Fraser hissed the second the front door had slammed shut behind Jason's retreating form, the dangerous man needing to know just how much damage control he needed to do to fix this whole sorry mess.
"What you going to do if he did?" Freddie questioned, though he knew he shouldn't push it. He should just lie and tell Fraser what he wanted to hear, what would keep Jason safe from harms way, but who was going to protect him? For so long Freddie had been a pawn in this whole sorry mess and he was growing sick of it.
He had hoped that the book would help him, after all, if he found it and brought it to the police, Fraser would be out of his life forever, but that was now impossible.
Once again, Fraser was the one in complete control, but Freddie had had enough. He was not putting up with this, not for any longer. He didn't have the upper hand no, but he could make Fraser quiver in his boots at the very least.
After all, a scared man was more likely to make mistakes, and Freddie would be waiting for any slip ups that Fraser was going to make. He was going to get the older man out of his and his family's lives if it was the last thing he ever did.
"What exactly would you do Fraser if Jason knew every one of your dirty little secrets? Because mum might have accepted Joe leaving like he did, but there's no way she'll accept it with Jason. Just face it, he's going to get you sent down and there will be nothing you can do about it. You're finished."
Before his confidence abandoned him like it so wanted to do for the last five minutes, Freddie hastily left the kitchen, not even turning to see what Fraser was making of the latest bombshell, maybe if he had, he would have an inkling of what to expect and he would know that it was anything but good.
But Freddie didn't turn around, no he practically ran out of the house and to the garage, desperate to put some space between him and his stepdad whilst he still could. When the front door slammed shut for the second time that day, Fraser let out a deep breath, kicking the items that were still littered on the floor, around the kitchen furiously.
Pulling out his phone, he dialled a very familiar number and brought it to his ear, the familiar voice of his right hand man greeting him after less than three rings. "Boss?"
"Freddie and Jason Roscoe. They're both trouble and they need sorting out."
"Roscoes? Sure your missus is going to be okay with you kidnapping two of her kids, especially after what happened with the oldest one."
"They may be family, but there's still a line and they crossed it today. They found my book and there's no telling what they'll have read, I need you to find out exactly what they learnt. If it's nothing, then we can let them go with a slap on the knuckles, if not... we'll just have to figure out another way to reprimand them. You think you can manage it Trevor?"
"Just leave it to me boss," Trevor confirmed, hanging up and no doubt planning what his first move would be, leaving Fraser with only his thoughts for company.
The thought of Freddie or Jason getting hurt wasn't a pleasant one, after all they were family now, but steps had to be taken to keep who he really was hidden. If they knew too much and couldn't be trusted, well permanent steps would have to be taken to keep their silence, Sandy would be devastated, what with her unaware of Joe's current whereabouts on top of her losing another two of her children, but it was all for the best.
If Fraser had another choice he'd take it, but there wasn't. He just prayed that he wouldn't have to take the more drastic steps, though the club-owner didn't feel hopeful in that area, as he waited for Trevor to call him again, this time with the news that he had both Freddie and Jason with him.

revor didn't know if it was because he had been in this... line of business for way too long, or whether the Roscoe brothers were incredibly stupid, but in less than an hour he was calling up Fraser to tell them he had both boys at his bar, a few miles out of the village.
Until then it was a waiting game, as Trevor took a seat till the pair woke up, checking his watch every few minutes, until a disorientated groan caught his attention.
"Alright Freds?" he said smirking as he watched his former lackey struggling against the bonds that had him fiercely tied to the chair, his eyes widening in horror as he clocked Jason, slumped in a similar position just a few feet away, finally stirring and re-entering the world of the living too.
"Let us go you dick," Freddie spat, eyes never leaving his brother's form, his struggling increasing tenfold as he wished for nothing but to be with Jason, to make sure that his younger brother was okay. Everything he had done in the past few months was to protect his family, but his recent cockiness had ruined that all, and now Freddie found himself in one of the biggest messes yet, because it wasn't only his life that was endangered, but Jason's.
He had already lost one brother, there was no way he could live with losing another. "I know Fraser's put you up to this, I ain't thick."
"Well we're just going to have to agree to disagree there aren't we?" Trevor smirked, amusement growing as the hatred in Freddie's eyes only increased. Stepping away from the younger man, Trevor turned so both Roscoe's could see him well and began talking, hoping this whole mess would be sorted out by the end of the day, he had places to go and didn't fancy spending his night with the pair of brothers just because Fraser was spooked.
"You're both here because you got involved in something you shouldn't have. Now I knew Freddie is a nosy bugger, but I was told you were different Jason. Apparently you're the smart one out of a bad bunch, you know when to keep out of things, but I'm really not seeing that."
"And where did you hear that?" Jason growled, trying to ignore the throbbing in his head, though it was difficult and the pain was almost overpowering.
"I have my sources," Trevor whispered lightly into Jason's ear, his breath tickling and hot, causing the teen to squirm in his seat.
"That Fraser by any chance?" Jason said, turning his head so he met Trevor's eyes as he spoke, though the thug gave no indication on whether he was right or wrong and Jason was too focused on the pain that was washing through him to keep his focus on the older man.
"Like I said, all you need to know is that you both know too much because you couldn't keep your noses out of it, so I'm here to make sure you don't talk."
"Surely there's better ways to go around it?" Jason deadpanned, though the look on Freddie's face made him pause. "What? What is it Freds?"
"He ain't going to rough us up to keep us quiet about what we know. He's going to kill us Jase."

"Sandy!" Lindsey cried as she saw her ex mother in law to be leaving Price Slice, almost half a dozen bags clutched in her hands. Running to the older woman, Lindsey took a few of the plastic bags from Sandy and tried to compose herself.
She hadn't told anyone about what Freddie had tried with her and she didn't think she ever would, she wasn't going to embarrass the younger man by telling everyone about his failed attempt at seducing her and well... Joe could return at any point and if he heard about what Freddie had tried, well he'd be probably be gone again before Lindsey could even blink.
Despite knowing that she was never going to tell anyone, Lindsey still wanted to talk to Freddie and sort everything out. He was her closest friend and if their friendship ended because of one stupid mistake, Lindsey wasn't sure she'd ever be able to forgive herself.
There was only one problem with her plan, and that was, Freddie was no where to be found. She'd been searching high and low for close to four hours now and there was still no sign of him and no answer on his phone. Lindsey knew that the young mechanic had probably just found a quiet spot to be in, to try and sort his head out, but she needed to see him, to explain why she'd never share the same feelings for him and why they'd never work out.
It was horrible news to break, but it had to be done, because nothing was going to be sorted if she just sat back and watched as the man she saw as a brother crumble and break down right in front of her.
"You haven't Freddie have you? I've been trying to find him all afternoon but he's nowhere."
"Oh don't tell me he's done a disappearing act like Jason," Sandy sighed, brushing a strand of hair from her face with her free hand, as she rolled her eyes at the thought of her disappearing sons. "I told him to meet me in town at lunch so I could give him a note for the school, but he never showed up so I had to get Robbie to do it. If that boy doesn't think I don't know about him and Holly sneaking off together he's got another thing coming."
"That's not like Jason," Lindsey frowned, hoping that Sandy was right about Jason's current whereabouts, though she didn't feel too hopeful about it.
"Yeah well he hasn't been acting himself since his arrest. That really shook him up," Sandy sighed her mind casting back to her youngest, heart breaking as she saw just how worried he was about his future, despite how much he tried to keep it hidden from everyone. "Him and Freddie might be helping Fraser out actually, he said he has some stock for the club to sort out so's going to be busy all day, probably won't see him till tomorrow thinking about, never do when he's doing stuff like that."
"Here's hoping then," Lindsey said softly, praying that Sandy's idea was right, because she couldn't bare the thought of Freddie getting into even more trouble because of her.
As the two women continued through the village, they were unaware of one of their fellow villagers listening closely into the conversation, eyes widening as he heard Fraser's name and quickly put two and two together as he realised just how much rtouble the two Roscoe boys would likely to be in.
Not pausing to explain to his fiancée, Jim McGinn ran out of the village square at a record-breaking speed, determined to stop Fraser from taking another two innocent lives whilst he still could, because there was little doubt in his mind that that was exactly what Fraser was doing at that precise moment.
In recent weeks Jim knew that Freddie had been manically looking for the little black book that would ruin Fraser, if he had found it when Fraser did, or even if his stepdad caught wind of Freddie's true intentions, well then the Roscoe was royally screwed.
It didn't fully explain why Jason was in trouble, but Jim had been in the business for way too long and knew that there was always collateral damage. In mere minutes the lawyer was at the Loft, cursing loudly when he realised that it was completely abandoned and that he was no closer from stopping Fraser killing two more innocent people.
But he couldn't give up, he just couldn't, and after searching a few more of Fraser's favourite haunts, Jim found himself heading to Trevor's bar out of town, because even if they weren't being kept there, Fraser's right hand man might just know something to help him. Trevor just had to know something, had to help him out, because Jim knew that if Fraser did have Freddie and Jason, time was running out for the two brothers and fast.
}}}}}}}}}}}
When Jim finally arrived at the bar, the first thing he heard was the familiar sound of a punch and an anguished cry. Despite that cry possibly belonging to someone else, Jim just knew it was one of the Roscoe boys who had been hit, and his suspicions were only confirmed when he heard Freddie shouting, enraged that his brother was being beaten to a pulp when he couldn't do anything about it, but just watch on helplessly.
Pressing himself to the door Jim desperately tried to hear and possibly see more of the situation, to try and figure out what was happening, before he did anything drastic, because the lawyer knew he had to do something to fix the situation, he had pushed for Freddie to betray Fraser even further, meaning it was probably his fault that the two brothers were currently suffering in the way they were, he couldn't give up and leave the pair to die, but he had tread lightly.
Going in all cocksure and not knowing all the facts was a dangerous and stupid game. In fact it got you killed and well... Jim was oddly fond of his life and didn't really want to lose it.
"Just let him go," Freddie cried, even the door between him and the lawyer not muffling the desperation that he was feeling, and Jim just had to wonder how severe the situation had to be, if the usually composed and cold Roscoe was sounding on the edge of a breakdown. "Jase hasn't done anything, he's not involved in all this shit."
"Now see that's where you're wrong, because he got involved the moment he decided to be a nosy little bastard, and go rifling through things that don't concern him," Trevor hissed, so faintly that it was a real struggle for Jim to catch every word he said. "He knows things about my boss that I can't allow people to know and he needs to pay."
"I don't know anything," Jason protested weakly. "I promise you I don't, I didn't even read that stupid book!"
"Then how did you know that it belongs to Fraser?"
"I recognise his hand writing, he lives with me, of course I did, but I didn't know anything about him being a freaking gangster until you kidnapped me."
"Now you see that's a shame," a new voice said, the smoothness of it making Jim's blood boil, because he had heard Fraser use that tone of voice before and it was never good.
It was designed to put you at ease before Fraser then heartlessly pulled the rug from out under your feet, making the fall that much worse. "Because if we had known that much before, then we wouldn't have been forced into this situation but it's too late now and you know far too much. I doubt there's a lot to keep you both silent anyway, not after what you've had to endure, so I'll just have to silence you both, permanently."
Jim was aware of both boys relentlessly babbling, begging, no screaming for mercy, so their lives wouldn't be ended so cruelly and painfully, though he didn't pay them his full attention, instead plucking his phone out of his pocket and dialling one, very simple number.
"Yes police please, I need to report something."
}}}}}}}}}}
Fraser wasn't sure how long it was till Freddie and Jason had calmed down, though to their credit it was only a few minutes at best. As he lifted the gun from his side, neither boy broke eye contact and Fraser had to hold a glimmer of respect for the pair, because this was normally the point when his victims were relentlessly struggling and begging for mercy, though not Freddie and Jason.
Fraser suspected it was because Freddie knew what was to come, had seen it happen far too often and knew that there was no way out, so at least wanted to die with some sort of dignity, whereas Jason was following his brother, trusting the older boy just like he been doing for his whole life, though too bad it wasn't going to end well for either of them.
"Say hello to Joe for me," he said softly, getting ready to cock the gun, though before he could, the doors to the bar were kicked open, revealing a horde of policemen, all of whom ran into the building, surrounding the four occupants from every angle in less than a minute.
"Drop the guns" Sam Lacey shouted, only moving forward with her partner when both Fraser and Trevor had done so. "Fraser Black and Trevor Royle you are both arrested for kidnap, assault and attempted murder, you do not have to say anything-"
Fraser gritted his teeth as Sam continued on with her spiel, though didn't say a word, knowing there was no point. The game was well and truly up now and he was finished. As the two gangsters were led away, policemen worked on freeing Freddie and Jason from their bounds, guiding both brothers outside to the waiting ambulance to check them out.
Neither Roscoe said anything for the whole journey to the hospital, and it was only as they were sat in their ward, waiting for the arrival of their family, did Jason turn to Freddie, eyes wide and fearful.
"What did Fraser mean when he told us to say hello to Joe?" Freddie sighed, knowing the question was going to pop up sooner or later, though he wished it was was going to be when his ribs were slightly less broken and he wasn't so pumped with drugs.
Taking a breath, Freddie steadied his nerves, trying to form the words in his head to the best of his abilities, because this was it, this was his moment to let the family know about Joe's real fate.
It was something they all deserved and with Fraser now well and truly out of the picture there was nothing keeping him quiet, so turning to his brother, Freddie got ready to tell the story he knew he'd have to repeat another ten times minimum, hoping that it would finally get rid of some of the guilt that had been weighing him down in recent times.
Well there was only one way to find out.
I hope you all enjoyed!
