Mid-October Friday Morning
Sam pulled his hand across his face and blinked hard. He had been staring at his laptop for almost two hours in the library. It was just about noon.
"Hey, Sam." Jessica sat down next to him and pulled her laptop out of her bag. Sam looked at her and then shook his head. "Mid-terms hitting you that hard, huh?"
"Well, that, and I over slept at Gabriel's. He doesn't have an eight AM class, so I missed mine and I've been looking at the lecture notes online, but with this professor if you miss her class you miss a lot."
"You shouldn't be spending the night at a friend's house on a school night, you know better than that." Jessica smiled and bumped her shoulder against Sam's.
"That originally wasn't the plan, but, he uh…was persuasive." Sam smiled to himself as a third person joined their group. The man sat down across from Jessica and smiled at the pair of them.
"What are you so happy about?" Sam raised an eyebrow at his new friend, Luis Smith.
"The golden boy actually missed a class today."
"Shut up, I was at my boyfriend's last night actually helping him study for a test that he had today." Sam remembered that he needed to text Gabriel and figure out how he did around one, after his econ class.
"Well lucky for you," Luis pulled his note book out of his backpack and plopped it on the table. "I actually made it to class this morning."
"Really?" Sam opened the notebook and found the notes from that morning. "Can I have these?" Luis nodded. Jessica looked over Sam's shoulder.
"What are these tally marks on the side?" Jessica looked at Luis. Sam laughed, maybe a little too loud for the library.
"That many times?"
"Oh it was bad today, man."
"What am I missing?" Jessica looked between the two of them.
"Our history professor says 'how about that' and then she stares at us for a while and then she jumps back to the lecture." Luis answered as Sam looked over the actual notes.
"And you two keep track?"
"Well, yeah? How do you get through your classes?"
"I actually pay attention."
"Hey, I pay attention." Sam jumped back into the conversation.
"Anyway, tomorrow are we going to the football game?"
"I'm in, Sam?"
"Um, what time? I have to work."
"Eleven-thirty."
"Well, I don't work until six, so that should be alright." Sam smiled.
"What about Gabriel?" Jessica asked.
"I can ask him, but I've got to get going to my math class. I'll see you guys later, alright?" Sam gathered his things and left the library. Sam took his usual seat in his math lecture hall and took his notebook out. Math went by quick enough and then Sam was done for the day. He was finished with classes, anyway. His Fridays were his easiest days. He worked later that day, but not until six-thirty.
Gabe: Guess who (probably) passed their econ exam because of their amazing boyfriend?
Sam: Hm…well I'm not taking econ so…
Gabriel smiled as he replied to Sam before his next class actually started. Then he got another message, and not from Sam.
Bart: Party. Our room. Tonight. No S/Os! Athletes only!
Gabe: Really? No S/Os or no boyfriends?
Gabriel knew that some people were uncomfortable with him and Sam.
Bart: No S/Os period! We need to clean tho…hurry back after class.
Gabriel sighed and knew there was no way of getting out of this. Sam worked that night and the two had talked about it in the living room while Bartholomew was in the kitchen listening.
Gabe: K
Gabriel put his phone face down on his table as Samandriel took a seat next to him.
"Hey, Alfie, how's it going?"
"Fine, I guess, did you get that text from Bartholomew? He's probably going to get us in trouble."
"Oh come on, I think it'll be fun." Gabriel smiled.
"Is Sam coming?"
"No, Bart said no significant others, did you not get that part of the text?"
"Nope, but you're also the only one that has one right?" Gabriel shrugged.
"Yeah, I guess so. Anyway, are you going to be there? I know parties aren't your thing." Samandriel opened his mouth to respond when their professor walked in. The two took notes and then walked back to their room and heard Bartholomew and Ezekiel discussing what they were going to do tonight.
"Zeke, the cops are not going to show up. We just have to keep it mostly quiet."
"How can you possibly know that?"
"Because I know, now, freshmen! Let's get cleaning!" Bartholomew clapped his hands as Gabriel and Samandriel walked in.
"Have you two done anything?" Gabriel looked around. There were still basketball shoes in the living room and a mountain of dishes in the sink.
"Well, we just got done with classes, too. Can we just get started?"
Three hours later, their apartment was clean and people were going to show up in about an hour. Gabriel decided that he should call Sam before he started his shift started. Gabriel walked into his room and dialed Sam's number.
"Hey, babe." Sam answered.
"Hey, what's going on?"
"Robin asked me to come in a little early, so I'm getting ready for work."
"Oh, well I can let you go." Gabriel looked at the clock on his nightstand. It was just about six o'clock.
"No, it's fine...Zach! Did you hide my keys? Never mind, I found them! Sorry, babe."
"Sam, really, you can go." Gabriel tried not to sigh or sound like he felt ignored.
"Gabe, it's fine. So what are you doing tonight?"
"Apparently we're having a party. I don't know who all is coming."
"Is that Kali girl?" There was just a slight hint of jealousy in Sam's voice.
"Um…I can ask Bart, but I don't actually know." Gabriel actually had been talking to Kali, since they had Composition together, but he hadn't exactly told Sam. It wasn't like they talked outside of class, so it wasn't that big of a deal, right?
"Oh. Okay. So your test went well?"
"Yeah, really well I think." The two talked about classes until Sam told Gabriel that he had to go into the diner.
"Well, have fun with your party. Oh, do you want to go to the Stanford football game tomorrow at eleven-thirty?"
"I don't think I can. I've got practice at noon."
"Damn, okay, well I work tomorrow night, too."
"Shit, well, what about…?"
"Baby, I gotta go. It's crazy in here and Robin needs me ASAP." Gabriel heard somebody that sounded like Robin yell in the background. "I'll talk to you later. Love you." The line went dead and Gabriel pulled the phone away from his ear. Sam didn't even wait for a response. He always did. Gabriel shook his head. It was just because he had to get to work. That was all.
"Gabe! Come out here!" Bartholomew yelled from the living room. Gabriel got up from his bed and walked into the living room.
"Okay, I'm going on a run, what do you want to drink?"
"What all are you getting?"
"Beer, vodka and some whiskey. Plus, some people are bringing other stuff."
"That sounds fine to me."
"Great, I'll be back later. We'll set up beer pong when I get back." Bartholomew left and Gabriel took a seat on the couch.
"So, Zeke, who is all coming to this thing?"
"I do not know. Obviously basketball players from both teams. I know some of the volleyball team, some of the softball team and most of the baseball team."
"I don't know if I've met any of the baseball team."
"Lucky you." Ezekiel mumbled under his breath.
"Heatin' up!" Gabriel exclaimed about four hours later. He had made his second shot in a row. He was playing beer pong with Bartholomew against a freshman and a sophomore from the baseball team.
"Hell yeah, Kansas!" Bartholomew raised his hand for a high five and he and Gabriel slapped hands. The room was crowded and loud with conversation and music. A lot of people were dancing in the living room area. Ezekiel seemed content with playing the DJ at the party so he was on the couch, mostly keeping his eyes on the iPod, looking up occasionally to talk to the girl from the softball team that had placed herself very close to him. Samandriel was talking to other basketball players and a few of the girls from the female basketball team. The baseball players weren't as bad as Ezekiel had implied but Gabriel could see why he didn't like them. The volleyball players weren't there yet. Bartholomew said that they had an away game and would be there shortly.
"On fire!" Gabriel smiled as he sank his third shot in a row. He made one more shot before he missed and the freshman baseball player, Scott?, muttered something about playing against basketball players. Gabriel and Bartholomew had just won when Gabriel felt someone's finger slide down his spin. He shivered and spun around to see Kali. Gabriel was slightly tipsy at this point, and gave her a big smile.
"Kali! Hey, beautiful. Glad you could make it." Kali smiled back. Her white shirt made her dark skin stand out even more. Gabriel took a drink of his whiskey sour and winked at her.
"Well, hello to you, too. Sorry I'm so late but, being winners means you have to put in extra work."
"And what would you know about winning?" Bartholomew threw his arm around Kali and pulled her close. Her glare was murderous. "Easy there, Kal, just kidding. Why don't you and Kansas take the next game?" He turned to the crowd around the table. "Who's next!?" Another guy from the baseball team and a girl from the softball team stepped up. Gabriel and Kali lost by only one cup, and then Kali pulled Gabriel into the living room to dance. Gabriel was feeling drunk by that time and he really wasn't going to resist a beautiful girl grinding on him.
"GABRIEL!" Samandriel yelled in his ear a couple of songs later. Gabriel looked at him.
"Alfie! 'Sup man?"
"Sam is on the phone." Samandriel held up Gabriel's cell phone that he must've left on the beer pong table. Gabriel looked at Kali, then grabbed his phone and walked into his room.
"Hey, baby." Gabriel thought he sounded sober enough to fool Sam.
"Hey, I know you're probably drunk and the party is probably going crazy, but I realized that I rushed you off the phone earlier and I had a bad day at work so I just kinda needed to hear your voice." Gabriel barely processed what Sam said.
"You did?"
"Yeah, I just wanted to say I love you and maybe you can come see me in the diner tomorrow before I get off and then we can hang out."
"Yeah! For sure!" Sam chuckled. "What? That wasn't funny."
"No, you're right, it wasn't. Sweetheart, maybe you should get some sleep. You're going to be hung over for practice tomorrow."
"Nah, I'll be fine! You sleep though." The door to Gabriel's door opened. He looked up and smiled at Kali. He held one finger up to her.
"Come on, Kansas! Bartholomew sucks at dancing compared to you! Let's get that pretty ass back on the dance floor!"
"Who was that?"
"Kali, give me another minute, kay?" She nodded and left the room. "Gotta go, baby. I'll come see you at the diner tomorrow, promise."
"Oh…um…o…okay. I guess I'll talk to you tomorrow?"
"Yup! I love you!"
"I love you, too." Gabriel hung up and then left his phone in his room for the rest of the night.
Meanwhile, over at Stanford, Sam Winchester had a sleepless night because every time he closed his eyes, he saw this Kali girl all over his boyfriend.
"Saaaaam." Zach sang in the morning. Sam had fallen asleep around four and it was just past seven when Zach was banging around their room. Sam groaned.
"No. Don't you have a snooze button?"
"Not on game day! Get up!" Sam sighed.
"I don't know if I'm going to go." He was still upset about last night. He knew Gabriel wouldn't cheat on him. He knew it. He just had a feeling in his gut that Gabriel was hiding something from him.
"Is this about the girl from last night? Sam, he had fun with his friends, you can have fun with yours. Now come on, Jessica wants us to meet at her place." Zach sat on Sam's bed.
"Don't we still have time? Why are we up so early?" Zach eventually convinced Sam to get out of bed and the two were at Jessica's dorm room, half way across campus, at eight o'clock. Jessica answered the door in jeans and a Stanford sweatshirt.
"Finally! Let's go get Luis and get some breakfast." Once the four of them were together, they went to a place practically on campus to get some breakfast. Sam pushed his eggs around and didn't eat. Jessica noticed right away.
"Sam, what's the matter?"
"Nothing, I just…"
"Gabriel was dancing with some girl last night." Zach answered through a mouth full of toast.
"Oh no. Was it that Kali girl again? He hasn't talked to her about having a boyfriend?"
"I don't know if they talked at all." Sam mumbled.
"Sam, I think that you need to talk to Gabriel." Sam looked up at Jessica.
"And say what? You need to stop talking to this girl because I think something is going on? I trust him to behave."
"Even when he's drinking?"
"I trust him all the time." Sam sighed. "I just, don't trust her. I've seen pictures of her and she's pretty. Plus she's there all the time, just a building away from him, in those stupid volleyball shorts." Sam formed a fist on the table. He figured if Gabriel even brought her up he would go off.
"Maybe you shouldn't have him come to the diner tonight." Zach suggested. Sam nodded.
"Yeah, I'll text him and tell him not to come. Then maybe we can talk tomorrow."
Gabriel kept his eyes closed and hoped the pounding would go away, until he realized it wasn't just in his head.
"Gabriel! We need to get going!" Ezekiel's voice shouted. Gabriel jumped out of bed and quickly regretted it. Bartholomew walked into the room.
"Come on, Kansas. We don't have time for freshmen lightweights. Alfie already puked, so if you need to do it hurry, we've got to get to practice in about fifteen minutes." Gabriel wasn't going to give Bartholomew the satisfaction of throwing up, so he held it together. He glanced at his phone and realized that he had a text from Sam.
Sam: Hey, if u don't want to come to the diner that's fine. I'll be busy anyway.
Gabriel racked his brain and tried to remember telling Sam that he would go to the diner to begin with, let alone he didn't want to go. He knew Sam worked at six-thirty that night.
Gabe: Why wouldn't I want to come see u at work? I'll be there.
Sam: K
Gabriel knew something was wrong. Sam never texted that. Gabriel debated calling him, but he should probably figure out what happened last night. He quickly got ready for practice and then went out into the living room.
"Hey there he is!"
"Hey, what happened last night?" Gabriel sat down on the couch to put his street shoes on to walk to the gym.
"Oh dude, you were awesome! We rocked beer pong and then well, Kali showed up." Bartholomew gave Gabriel a look that implied a lot more than what was said.
"What happened after Kali showed up?"
"You danced all night. I know you took a call from Sam around one and then she came in, got you, and then you guys danced more. She gave you a hug before she left, and then you went in your room and passed out."
"Oh, that's not bad." Gabriel sighed in relief. He knew when he drank he could sometimes get a little, as Sam put it, handsy and it would be easy for somebody to misinterpret.
"Yeah, don't worry dude, anyway, we seriously need to go or Coach Turner will have our asses. Alfie!" Bartholomew banged on his bathroom door. "Let's go! Nothing better for a hangover than sweating it out!" Samandriel came out of the bathroom and looked practically green. "Come on, buddy, we gotta go." The four walked out of their room, out of the building, and over to the gym.
Sam saw him come in. They hadn't talked for most of the day and it was almost ten. Sam had forgotten about it during the football game, but after they went back to Jessica's and talked about it some more, he realized that he was actually kind of upset about it. He knew they needed to talk about it.
Gabriel walked in and sat at a booth that he was told was in Sam's section. Sam walked over and looked down at him.
"What can I get you, sir?"
"Just a coffee, I'm waiting for my boyfriend to show up." Gabriel smiled up at Sam. Sam didn't smile back.
"Coming right up." Sam walked away and then came back with the coffee. "Anything else?" Sam drummed his fingers on the back of the booth.
"What? Am I keeping you from something?" Gabriel glanced around the almost empty diner.
"No, I just, I know we need to have a conversation and I don't want to have it here." Gabriel was confused. What conversation did they need to have?
"Babe, take a seat and we can talk. What's up?" Sam checked over the front door to make sure that he wasn't about to have another customer walk in. He sighed and sat across from Gabriel. Those amber eyes were filled with concerned.
"How was your party last night?" Sam's voice was tight and strained.
"It was alright, the parts I remember anyway."
"Do you remember talking to me?"
"Honestly? No, I don't." Sam paused. The next question was going to be the one that started the whole mess.
"So, do you remember dancing with Kali?" Gabriel froze with the coffee to his lips. He took a sip, debating on if he should tell the truth or not.
"I remember some of it, yeah." Sam looked at the table. "Sam, all we did was dance. I promise you."
"You don't even remember talking to me, how do I know you didn't do anything else?"
"Because I asked." Sam scoffed.
"You had to ask?" It was taking all of Sam's strength not to get upset. "You had to ask other people if you did anything with this girl."
"And I didn't. I knew I didn't I just…needed to make sure." Gabriel was surprised that Sam was getting this pissed off. What the hell? Nothing had happened.
"You needed to make sure? You needed to make sure that you didn't cheat on me?"
"I wouldn't cheat on you!" Gabriel was hurt and Sam could see it on his face. The only problem was that Sam couldn't shake the feeling about this Kali girl.
"I…" The look on Gabriel's face broke him. "I know you wouldn't." Sam sighed.
"Then why are you acting like this? Why are you freaking out on me? I mean, you hang out with some pretty good looking guys and I don't jump down your throat."
"They aren't gay. I don't dance and get drunk with them. Kali is a pretty girl, don't give me that look, I've seen pictures of her, and it's not like, you haven't dated girls in the past. I know that your jock friends can have some influence on you. They could get into your head and make you realize that maybe you aren't gay." Then Gabriel knew what this was really about.
"You…" Gabriel laughed bitterly and shook his head. "Are you seriously comparing me at thirteen to me now? Sam, if I haven't shown how I've changed then maybe we shouldn't be together anymore." Sam's mouth fell open and he felt like all the air in his lungs was gone. When Sam didn't say anything, Gabriel slammed a five on the table. "Keep the change." Gabriel got up and walked out of the diner. Sam sat in the booth, waiting for Gabriel to come back in. After a couple minutes, Sam realized that Gabriel probably wasn't coming back in, and knew he needed to get back to work. After a quick cry in the kitchen.
Outside the diner, Gabriel waited for Sam in his car to come after him. He waited for Sam to come tell him he was sorry and they would make up and things would be okay. He waited. Then he saw Sam get up and walk into the kitchen. So, he was just going back to work? Fuck it then. Gabriel was going home. So what if tears were already in his eyes? So what if his heart hurt more than it ever had?
