Mid-December
Sam leaned against the driver's door of the Impala, waiting. Jessica was in the back seat, playing with headphones. The two were waiting for Gabriel to come downstairs.
"Why don't we just go in and get him? Plus, I can meet the roommates."
"Jess, for about the hundredth time, his roommates aren't that cute."
"So? Come on, we need to get on the road. It's a long drive back to Kansas, Toto."
"I know, and Dean said there's a snow storm coming in." Sam sighed. The three of them were driving back to Kansas for winter break. Sam had tried to convince Dean to let him fly, but there was no getting through to him. "Okay, let's go." Jessica got out of the car and the two walked into Gabriel's building. They got up to his door and knocked. Gabriel answered.
"Hey, babe." Sam bent down and gave Gabriel a kiss on the cheek.
"Hey, I'm just about done. Are you guys ready?"
"Well, we've been waiting downstairs for like ten minutes."
"You have been? Why didn't you text me?"
"I did! Whatever, we have to get going or Dean will be insanely annoying about me being late." Gabriel, Sam and Jessica walked into the living room, where Bartholomew, Ezekiel and Samandriel were sitting, playing a video game.
"Ha! Touchdown! Suck it, Zeke!" Bartholomew looked up and smirked at Jessica. "Well, hello gorgeous. How are you doing?" Jessica blushed.
"I'm doing great, thanks Bart." Gabriel winked. "But since you spoke, Jessica Moore, these are my roommates, Bart, Zeke and Alfie. Guys, this is Jessica Moore, she's been me and Sam's friend for, well, basically ever."
"Nice to meet you guys." Jessica waved and smiled.
"Nice to meet you." Bartholomew winked.
"Alright, well we are going to leave now." Gabriel walked into his room and grabbed his suitcase. "Have a good break, guys. See ya!" Gabriel waved and the three walked back out to the Impala.
"So, which one was…?" Jessica began once they were all in the car.
"Bartholomew, and trust me, Jess, you don't want to touch that one with a ten foot pole." Gabriel answered. Jessica leaned back against her seat and sighed.
"Fine."
"Hey, I told you that Luis would be more than happy to show you a nice time, Jess." Sam smiled at her in the review mirror. Jessica rolled her eyes.
"No, I mean, I love Luis and he's a sweet guy, just, I don't see it with him."
"What about Zach? He thinks you're pretty." Jessica shrugged.
"He does? I didn't know that. Maybe we could try a double date sometime."
"I'm in." Gabriel piped up.
"Great, I'll talk to Zach about it later. For now, let's just get to Kansas."
"Remind me why we aren't flying again?" Jessica asked.
"Well, Dean doesn't like flying, but honestly I think it's just so he can have his baby back and drive her around again."
"I thought you were his baby." Sam laughed and Gabriel turned around and looked at her.
"No, he's my baby." Gabriel smiled and Jessica laughed. The three actually enjoyed their road trip. They talked, and laughed. They were just about to Las Vegas when Jessica fell asleep. They drove by the exit and Gabriel looked at Sam.
"Does Nevada allow gay marriage?" Sam almost slammed on the brakes.
"Uh…I…I don't know. Why?" Gabriel shrugged.
"Maybe we could make a little pit stop on the way back to California."
"Right, without our parents and only Jess as our witness. Great plan, babe."
"That wasn't a 'no'." Sam sighed.
"Gabe, you know I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but I want us to be settled. I mean, I'm out of law school and actually have a job. You've got a bakery or a restaurant like you want. We're living together. I want all of that before we decide to get married."
"You do?" Gabriel slid closer and Sam wrapped his arm around Gabriel. Gabriel rested his head on Sam's shoulder.
"Of course I do. I have this whole thing planned."
"Tell me about it." Gabriel closed his eyes.
"Well, we get married, and we get this nice little house somewhere in the suburbs. You go to your bakery, and it's hard work, but you love it. I'm working at a law firm, taking on important cases."
"But you still have time for me right?"
"Well of course I do. Why wouldn't I?" Gabriel yawned. "Why don't you get some sleep? I'll be okay."
"Are you…?" Gabriel yawned again. "Okay," Gabriel gave Sam a kiss on the cheek then scooted over so he could sleep on the window. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep. Sam sat in silence as his boyfriend and best friend (well, Kevin was his best friend, but Jessica was a very close second) slept in the car. He thought about his and Gabriel's future. It made him smile to think that Gabriel wanted to have a life together.
The three switched on and off driving until they finally made it to Lawrence. The boys dropped off Jessica and then Sam drove over to Gabriel's house. Saraqeal ran out the door and embraced Gabriel.
"OH SWEETIE I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE HOME!" Then she looked at Sam. "AND SAM!" She threw her arms around him as well. She pulled away and wiped her eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm just so happy that you two are home and safe."
"We are too, Mom. I'm going to run my things up to my room, alright?" Gabriel gave his mom a kiss on the cheek.
"Okay, Sam, are you going to stay here?"
"Well, I need to go see Dean and Castiel. Then, we're going to have our big family Christmas, right?" Sam grinned.
"Of course! Give them our love and we'll see you later, alright?"
"Yes, ma'am. Gabe, I'll text you later, okay?" Sam and Gabriel exchanged a kiss.
"Bye, Sam."
"Sammy!" Dean hugged Sam so tight that Sam thought he was going to crack.
"Good to see you too, Dean." Sam pulled away and smiled at his brother. Castiel gave Sam a hug and then they too broke apart. Then Sam couldn't see Dean in the room. Castiel rolled his eyes and pointed to the open front door. Dean was outside inspecting the Impala and it appeared as though he was muttering something.
"Car looks good, Sammy!" Sam sighed and turned back to Castiel.
"So, what are the plans for break?"
"Well, Kevin is flying in tomorrow so I'll probably hang out with him."
"Great, but everybody from the daycare wants to see you."
"And Bobby and Ellen." Dean said when he came back inside.
"Won't I see them at Christmas?"
The Winchesters discussed when Sam would see everybody for the three weeks he was home. Sam wanted to see his family, he really did, but he wanted to see his friends too. It was finally decided that Dean would invite Bobby and Ellen over for dinner tomorrow night and then Sam could go hang out with Kevin.
The next night, Sam sat at the dining room table with his 'aunt and uncle'. They asked him about school, his relationship with Gabriel, and how California was. Sam told them, and then they filled him in on what had been happening around there. Bobby and Dean had decided that Dean would fully take over the garage in the next year or so so that Bobby could retire. Castiel had said that things at the daycare were as crazy as ever. Sam was having such a good time that forgot about heading over to Kevin's. Sam texted him and they decided that they would have a night, all of them, the following night. Sam was excited. He had talked to Kevin on a regular basis, but Jody and Channing he really missed.
Kevin, Channing, Jessica, Jody, Sam and Gabriel were in Kevin's basement.
"Man, I've missed you guys." Jody hugged Jessica for about the tenth time that night.
"We've missed you, too. How is everything going for everybody?"
"Well, Sam's kicking ass, Jessica's kicking ass, and I'm doing alright."
"Gabe, you're doing great, stop doing that." Sam shot Gabriel a look.
"Anyway, how about you guys?"
"Well, my criminal classes are interesting." Jody smiled.
"Great, you can arrest them and then I can prosecute them." Sam raised his soda can to her.
"Perfect! What about you guys?"
"Channing is doing great in her pre-law classes, too."
"And Kevin is blowing them away in his pre-med classes." They talked about their classes more, and Jody and Jessica complained about dating. All-in-all, everybody had a great night.
"Well, can you Cali kids still drive in snow after dark?" Kevin teased after Mrs. Tran yelled down at them.
"I think we can handle it." They all hugged and said good-bye, remembering how great it was to be around their friends.
Christmas
"Wow, everything smells great, Ellen." Dean said as he walked through the house. Ellen and Bobby were hosting the 'family' Christmas this year. Dean had reluctantly agreed to this.
"Well, thanks." Hugs and kisses were exchanged. "Now, Sam, Castiel, into the living room with you. Dean owes me some time in the kitchen." Sam and Castiel shrugged as they walked into the living room to a basically asleep Bobby.
"Bobby?" Sam whispered. Bobby snorted and looked up. A smile slowly spread over the old man's face.
"If it ain't my favorite boys. Where's Dean?"
"In the kitchen with Ellen."
"Of course he is. Well, football's on." Bobby sat up as the doorbell rang. Dorothy and Charlie came in and each gave Sam a hug. Anna and her husband Raphael came later. Lisa and her seven year old son Ben were next arriving. Then finally, Gabriel and his parents were there. Gabriel and Sam sat next to each other on the couch. There was a great smell of food coming from the kitchen when Ellen came out and announced that everything was ready. The large group made their way into the dining room, which was bigger than the Winchesters. Sam and Gabriel talked about school, everybody talked about work, and then Ben spoke up.
"Are we going to have pie soon?" Everybody looked at him.
"Alright, that's it, no more hanging out with Uncle Dean." Lisa laughed. Dean sent a wink at Ben.
"I knew I liked you, kid." Ben smiled. Ellen stood up and went to get the pie. She brought out all of them and everybody had their pieces and talked some more. Once food was done, it was time to watch more football, and just be around each other. Sam looked around his impromptu family. He loved each of them like they were really related to him. He didn't think that he could stay that far away from them.
"Call us when you get back to school, alright, Sammy?" Dean hugged his brother for about the third time the day he was leaving. He was going to pick up Gabriel and Jessica before (finally) heading back to Stanford.
"You know I will, Dean." Sam hugged Castiel and then got into the Impala. Dean looked over the car again and then waved to Sam. Sam waved back and then pulled out of the driveway.
The three drove back to California, taking shifts again. During one of Sam's, when Jessica was asleep, he looked over at Gabriel. Gabriel was awake, so Sam decided to say something.
"Hey, babe?"
"Yeah?"
"You remember when I said we would have a house in the suburbs?" Gabriel smiled.
"Yeah?"
"What about the suburbs of Kansas? Like, Lawrence?" Gabriel sighed.
"You were thinking that too, huh?"
"Wait, really?"
"Of course. I mean, I love California, don't get me wrong, but I want us to be closer to our friends and family. The way my friends made it sound, they're planning on coming back. Plus, if we end up, ya know, with kids, I'm sure our parents will want to be in their lives. Kinda hard to do that when we're all the way in California."
"Well, maybe, after I finish law school,"
"How about we cross that bridge when we get there?"
"Sounds like a deal to me." Sam smiled.
Okay, so kind of a filler chapter. Again, not my favorite, but I wanted to show some things. Thinking of skipping to when Sam is in law school, but not 100 percent yet (let me know, maybe?). Anyway, I actually have the last few chapters outlined and I'm going to be working on them! Thanks a lot for everything guys! You rock!
