New Beginnings
This chapter has been requested by Lydia and their prompt was Jason gets ready to leave his family behind to start his new life at university
Some people are more compatible with going to university than others were. It wasn't a bad thing if you didn't end up going, after all, there were a lot of people who didn't, entering the world of work as soon as their education ended at eighteen, but there are others in the world who have always wanted to go.
And despite none of his brothers going, hell none of his family in living memory, Jason had always wanted to go to university. He wanted to experience it all, wanted to meet new people and be in a different part of the country than what he was used to.
It had never been an epiphany or revelation, it was just fact that he, Jason wanted to go to university whilst his brothers couldn't think of anything worse. So for all his school years, Jason had always worked hard, aiming to get the best grades he could to make it even more likely that he would get a decent amount of university offers.
And boy did he. By the time he had reached his second year of A-levels, numerous of offers were flooding in from universities from around the country, all offering him a place to study physics as long as he did as well in the next batch of exams as he had been doing so far.
The most amazing offer though was from Cambridge. It was well known, all over the world in fact, that this is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK, so for them to be offering Jason of all people a place, well it was surely something.
Jason tried to not let it get it to him, knowing that offer could disappear if he didn't do as well as Cambridge wanted, and well this was Cambridge for Christ's sake, there was little chance that would happen when there were hundreds of other candidates, all a lot smarter and more importantly richer than Jason could ever dream to be.
So he kept his head down, worked as hard as he could, though never expecting for it all to pay off. But then it did. Jason walked away with three A-levels, all at grade A, in a state of shock as he tried to figure out that had happened, before it hit him.
He had the grades to get into the physics course at Cambridge, he could go there if he wanted to, as long as his family, the most important people to him, were willing to see him leave for pastures new.
And unsurprisingly, none of them had a problem with it, because sure, the Roscoe's would miss having one of their own living within spitting distance of them, but who were they to stand in the way of Jason's dreams, in the way of his life changing completely, hopefully for the better.
Because it would change. He would be surrounded by people who had all different upbringings to him, with the same dedication and work ethic that his current peers sorely lacked, and all with the same ambitious dreams that Jason had once been mocked for many years ago, when his old teachers learned that the majority of his family worked in the local garage (they usually forgot about the fact that his family were the one to set up and run said garage).
Going to Cambridge was something that so many people dreamed about but rarely succeeded with, so for Jason to be managing it after many years of hard work, well it was more than slightly daunting. Even as he was packing to leave, Jason was unable to believe that he was going to one of the top universities in the world, unable to believe that his life was going to change in ways that even he couldn't imagine yet.
Just by going to Cambridge, by accepting his place there, Jason's life had already changed, though it didn't feel like it. Doors that he was unaware of had opened up for him, promising new career paths and opportunities that a lot of people would never get to, or not at his age anyway.
It was a scary thought, but the excitement that Jason was feeling for starting a new part of his life in a completely new place with people he couldn't even begin to imagine yet, well it overpowered the fear completely.
Because Jason knew he ready to start off this new path, and as he dragged his suitcase on to the already full train, waving to his family out of the window, his mum already crying, Jason couldn't help but smile, knowing his life was just starting, and he had never been more excited.
So it's a bit different than a lot of my pieces, but I hoped you liked this writing style too!
I've had a few questions about whether I'll be re-opening prompts once I've caught up, so I thought I'd post the answer here too, to make it clear for everyone.
The honest answer is I have no clue whether I'll re-open the prompts up or not. As you can see, there's a load of chapters I still have to write, which is going to take a considerate amount of time. I don't know when I'll catch up, or what I'll be doing at that point.
At this moment in time, I'd love to re-open the prompts and continue on with this story, but I also want to write for other fandoms as well as original pieces too. So sorry for the vagueness, but I'll keep you posted on that matter!
Thank you all for the amazing support though, all your reviews leave a huge grin on my face which is practically impossible to wipe off!
I'm really glad you enjoyed the last chapter, I don't usually write humour so I was feeling quite nervous about that!
Next Chapter – Lindsey's just had her first miscarriage, and is wondering how she and Joe will ever be able to move on from their tragic loss. But Sandy shows her that there is something after death, after all, she's experienced the same very thing herself – prompted by Gillian Kearney Fan and Alaska
