Part II: The Year of the Birthdays

Chapter 11: Happy Birthday, Elena Gilbert

"Aaawwwwwww," Elena screamed as I swung her around in a circle on top of a giant mattress thing. "Faster! Klaus, faster," she cried, laughing. We were all having a blast as the other kids ran around the backyard of the house. I was currently making myself spin faster and faster. Damon was hanging upside down being swung around by Elijah. This was what would be known as the year of the birthdays because we had not celebrated birthdays together the first year.

Slowing down, I dropped Elena next to a panting Damon. "That was awesome," The birthday girl told Damon as she sucked in deep breaths.

Elijah collapsed beside our friends as Caroline and Katherine plopped down in our little group. "Ugh, I ate too much cake." Katherine moaned, clutching at her stomach while rolling into Elijah and burying her face into his shoulder.

"There. There, Kat," Elijah put an arm around her and rubbed her back. I watched through narrowed eyes. As soon as Katherine turned twelve she began to act even odder than usual. One minute she was smiling, then she was crying, then she was eating and she was gaining weight.

"Your chest is bigger," Damon told Katherine, echoing my thoughts. "Why?" Staring at Katherine's chest, Damon looked puzzled.

Elijah began to laugh and grabbed Damon by the feet. "I do believe you want to be spun again rather than asking a young lady improper questions, Damon?"

"Whateeeeeevvvvvveeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr," Damon yelled before roaring with laughter.

"I want to be spun," Caroline announced to me.

"I can't." I told her. "You're wearing a dress."

Caroline's face contorted in a frown. "So?"

I felt my face flush red. "Everyone will see your underwear." I whispered to her.

"So?" Caroline replied, shaking her head, her lips twisting into wide smile. Her curls bounced as she shook her head.

"Other people aren't supposed to see you like that." I explained to Caroline as she sighed. Getting up, she moved over to Katherine. "Swing me, Kat. Please!"

Katherine stared at Caroline, shaking her head. "I'm sick in my stomach, kid. So, no."

"So?" Caroline threw her hands up in the air. "Will someone swing me?" She yelled.

Elijah got up and held out his hands to Caroline. "Come here, young lady." Caroline took his hands and he began to swing her around. I frowned. It hadn't occurred to me to try it that way.

Sighing, I sat back as Elena got up and took the plate with a piece of cake that Jenna was holding out to her. "Thank you, Jenna." Elena plopped back down beside Damon who reached out and stuck his finger in the icing and began to lick it off his finger.

"Ew, Damon germs." Caroline squealed at Elena who began to grin looking at the mattress and she picking up her fork.

"Not with a fork, Lena," Damon commanded taking the fork away and picked part of the cake up and stuck it in his mouth.

Picking up a piece of cake with her fingers Elena stuck it in her mouth with a giggle. "Umm," She groaned. "It tastes better that way." Damon picked up a piece of the cake and held it out to Elena who giggled opening her mouth. Grinning Damon placed the cake in his own mouth. "Meanie." Elena snapped at him, pouting.

Picking up another piece of cake Damon scooted over and held it in front of Elena's mouth. Looking at Elena, Damon slid his fingers under her chin and forced her to meet his gaze. "Close your eyes," he ordered. "And open your mouth." Elena closed her eyes and opened her mouth cautiously. Damon placed the piece of cake on her tongue and then kissed her on the cheek. "Happy birthday, Lena," he whispered.

Grinning, I couldn't believe my eyes. I was going to make Damon's life miserable for weeks for that one. So, much for his bad boy reputation. I felt shocked when I felt something touch my cheek. Turning, I saw Caroline smiling at me. "Ew, Caroline germs." Damon called to us.

Caroline stuck her tongue out at him. "I don't like you."

"I don't like you, too," Damon snapped at Caroline.

"Stop, you two," Katherine said. "My stomach feels so gross." She moaned laying down clutching at her stomach.

Elijah came over and laid down and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm here, Kat. I'm here for you."

Katherine sighed while tears ran down her cheek. "Are you okay, Kat?" Elena asked sliding over and touching her sister's cheek. She did look awfully pale.

"I'm okay, Lena. Have fun with your party." Katherine told her sister with a forced smile.

"There's something red on your skirt, Kat." Damon informed the older Gilbert girl who looked down and groaned.

"Oh, God. Not today." Katherine groaned as she jumped to her feet and Elijah blushed. That was funny because I had never seen my brother look that embarrassed before. He hopped off the mattress and followed Katherine inside the house. I looked at the others and hurried to get off the mattress. For some reason I felt the need to find out what the red spot was and why they had to go inside because of it. Caroline, Elena and Damon followed me inside the house.

We crept up the stairs of the Gilbert house and heard my brother talking to Katherine. "Katherine, it is not something to be embarrassed about." Elijah called to her.

"Yes, it is," Katherine yelled back at him but her voice was muffled. "I got my period on my kid sister's birthday. That is just gross. And I love that skirt."

"I will buy you another. A better one." Elijah called back to her. "And I doubt the children would even know what you meant by you got your period."

"What's a period?" Damon asked as he walked into Katherine's bedroom startling, Elijah. "And why are you standing outside Kat's bathroom? Just go in already." Damon shook his head like it was the most logical thing in the world.

Stepping out of the bathroom, Katherine glared at Damon. "Go back to the party," she snapped as Damon stared at her, his lips turning upward into a smirk.

"No." Damon replied flatly as I walked in, followed by Caroline and Elena.

"Do you people think this is a convention?" Katherine yelled at them, placing her hands on her hips. Elena's lower lip trembled as she looked up at her sister. "Come on, Lena. Don't cry. Just… just go get some more cake and play with your friends." Katherine begged her sister who walked over to Damon and took his hand.

"I'm not leaving until you tell me what this period thing is and why you had a Kool-Aid stain on your skirt?" Damon told her as he swung his and Elena's hands together.

"Really?" Katherine plopped down on her bed. "How about when you get your first one I'll tell you all about it."

Damon's face wrinkled up. I stared at Katherine. "You mean that happens to everyone?" I asked feeling sick in my stomach. Instinctively, I reached out and took Caroline's hand in mine and squeezed.

Elijah opened his mouth when Katherine began to stare at him. Shutting his mouth, my brother allowed Katherine to continue. "Yeah, Damon, when you get older you're going to start feeling icky in your stomach and really tired. Then you begin to bleed once a month. It's a real bummer."

Damon's mouth fell open. "You mean, when I'm old like you, I'll start bleeding out my butt like you?"

"I am not that old!" Katherine screamed at Damon who began to laugh.

"You are really old. Now, back to the butt bleeding. You said that happens every month?" Damon looked concerned. "That doesn't seem right. Ric, Mason and Elijah never mentioned having that problem before." He folded his arms over his chest staring at Katherine.

"What? Do you think everyone just goes around talking about it?" Katherine rolled her eyes.

"Why not? Hey, Klaus when's the last time you went to the bathroom?" Damon asked me.

"Ew." Caroline and Elena moaned, wrinkling their noses.

"See." Katherine snapped. "It's okay to talk about these things." Just then Andie came into the room.

"Okay, Kat. I have everything you need your first month. Kotex, Midol, Ben and Jerry's, episodes of Friends." Holding up a bag, Andie was painfully cheery. "Everything a girl needs for the first go."

Shaking his head Damon smirked. "So, it's a girl thing. I knew it."

"What? No." Elena gasped. "I don't want to do that. It's gross. I'm never growing up."

"I'm not either," Caroline declared.

"But then you can't get married and have baby Klauses." Damon teased Caroline who frowned.

"Okay. Maybe I'll grow up a little. But not forever. I never want to be old. Because people die when they get old. My grandfather died. And I don't want to have to have the gross butt bleeding forever." Caroline folded her arms and pouted.

I began to laugh. She was just so cute when she made that face. "We'll never die, Care. You, me and Damon. We're going to be friends forever." I reassured her. Caroline smiled at me.

"And Elena." Elena added staring at us with wide hopeful eyes.

"Yeah, and Elena." I replied making Elena grin widely. "We're never going to let each other go. We're like family. And you don't let family go no matter what."

As I lay in bed tonight my words echo and I have to chuckle to myself as I continue to write our story. There is much to tell and there never seems to be enough time to tell it in. Snoring lightly, in the chair beside my bed Caroline looks just like the angel I always thought her to be.

Elena and Damon are taking the night off trying to get some rest. But as we all know there is no rest for the wicked. Sucking in a painful breath I sit back against my pillows and begin to write once more. I have no idea how much time I have left.

Yawning, Elena's eyelids began to droop. "I'm tired, Kat." She whispered.

"I know," Katherine told her picking her up and carrying her over to the bed. Sitting down with Elena in her arms, Katherine leaned against her pillows. Damon, Caroline, Andie, Elijah and I all piled onto the bed.

At some point someone got a spoon and we devoured the Ben and Jerry's. Several hours later all of us ended up asleep on top of the bed. "I dare you to live with me forever." Someone called and I smiled up at Caroline. The tall young woman who stood over me with big blue eyes wasn't the Caroline I knew but I would recognize anywhere.

"I will," I promised her getting up and finding that I was taller than she was. She wrapped her arms around my waist and kissed me on the lips. I really hoped this was my future I couldn't think of anything better.

"I dare you to shave Damon's hair off," I heard someone say in my sleep. That was weird. Why would Caroline say that? Waking up hours later I stared at Damon in horror. Someone had shaved his head. So, it wasn't a dream. What's worse I woke up in a dress.

"Gah," I screamed looking down at the outfit. Getting up I ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror and screamed again. They put makeup on me. Walking back out of Katherine's bathroom Andie, Katherine and Elijah were laughing.

"Pictures." Katherine called as she began to take photos of me. I rolled my eyes as Damon woke up and ran a hand over his head and screamed.

"What did you do?" Damon screamed once he made it to the bathroom. Elena began to giggle when she saw me. "What are you laughing at?" Damon yelled at her. "Ms. Pink hair."

Elena's jaw dropped as she ran into the bathroom and screamed. Caroline was the only one who seemed to not have fallen victim to the pranks of the night That is, until she got up and I caught sight of a fake tattoo on her leg of a an angry looking Dracula on her left leg. "We called her Mom and told her Care went to the tattoo parlor." Katherine shrieked.

Caroline just looked at the tattoo. "Dracula isn't cute. Why can't I have one of a cute vampire?"

"Are there cute vampires?" Elijah asked.

"On Buffy." Andie told him nodding enthusiastically.

"Angel is so hot. And Spike and Xander. Oh, I can't decide." Katherine told us with a wide grin. "They're all so cute."

"And how do I rate in that group?" Elijah asked her, raising an eyebrow.

"You're way hotter," Katherine said, leaning toward him.

"Agh, no kissing." Damon yelled before Katherine could kiss my brother.

"Get out of my room." Katherine ordered us.

I shrugged. "Okay. But I need my brother to walk me home. Bye, Lena. It was a fun party."

"Thanks for coming," Elena called as we made our way down the stairs.

"I hate Kat," Damon muttered rubbing at his bare head.

"Why? I did that." Elijah told him.

"But she dared you to," Damon snapped. "It's all her fault. She's way too mean. We should have never let her in the group. It was a stupid idea."

"It was yours." I pointed out and he glared at me.

"Thanks for the help, brother." Damon muttered. "So, we need to just make her miserable until she quits."

"That's against the rules," Caroline told him.

"So?" Damon snapped. "The get Kat out of dare club plan starts now."
