Chapter 2
When the photographs kept coming, Spy knew he needed to catch this man fast- for the sake of his love's sanity.
But overwhelming joy shone light for them in this dark and disturbing time. As the months passed away, hopes aroused for their growing infant and its future brothers couldn't wait for the time when they will welcome the new member of the family.
Let me rephrase that. New members of the family.
That's right. After six months, Spy decided that it was finally time to bring his cheri back to the hospital to check on the situation of their baby. They were confident that nothing seemed wrong with their infant, but the look on the doctor's face when he had the results on screen drew an air of worry and suspicion over the two.
"Is something wrong, doctor ?" Spy asked in his French accent.
"Uh, Mr...uhh.." The man stammered, eyes still on screen of an ultrasound machine.
"Peterson." Spy sighed, rolling his eyes, remembering the names of all those people he has 'taken care of' before, hoping the doctor wouldn't suspect anything.
Luckily, he didn't and proceeded to finish his interrupted sentence.
"Mr. Peterson...it seems as if-as if something went up," he beamed, "you and your..."
"Fiancé." Spy grunted, clearly tired of finishing the man's sentences from time to time. He was a man of few words...and he meant to keep it that way.
"Yes, you and your fiancé are expecting...twins now," he declared, nearly laughing in pleasant surprise, "yes-twins!"
Speechless, Spy turned to his cheri, who was already looking at him, beaming with delight.
"Is it true, doctor?" Spy asked with a smile on his face, hurrying to the screen. The doctor didn't reply and let the man see the proof for himself.
"Cheri!" he exclaimed in halcyon, "it's true indeed-we have twins to expect!"
The woman laughed with joy as she took Spy in her arms. "It's double than what we expected!" she joked around, letting the doctor do more scanning.
Spy couldn't believe this. Of all the men in the country- in the world- why did he have to feel this profound joy doubled? He felt more than blessed. Was there something he did? He couldn't remember one.
The Frenchman couldn't help but question if this blessing was supposed to go to someone else but was mistakenly sent to him instead. But whatever happened, destiny better not have any plans of taking what it already has given him.
"No return, no exchange" they say around these parts. Spy has been a man of his word, and he hopes life could do the same for him.
When the team heard of this, they felt the joy in the man's words and felt that feeling radiate into all of them as well; Demo, Soldier, Sniper, Pyro, Medic, Heavy and Engie couldn't be happier for him- they were so excited by the news that Tavish nearly declared another celebration on the spot, drinks are on him, he assured. But Spy quickly dismissed his friend from doing such a thing. He already has every reason to smile.
Every night, Spy would make sure he would be there beside his beloved, taking care of her in any way possible. Their infants were growing fine and it was almost nine months, almost time for them to go out into the world, and there was a lot pressuring Spy.
This would be his first time being a father; he has heard of tales of uneasiness pertaining to the issue of parenthood. He wonders if it would be harder than being a mercenary.
He stood in front of the mirror, removed his mask, pushed his hair back and studied the wisps of grey growing on the front and sides of his hair.
"I'm growing old..." he chuckled to himself and turned the faucet on. He cupped his hands beneath it and gathered water when a cold sweat broke out of him.
He suddenly felt scared...as if something bad was about to happened; he felt like a person who woke from a nightmare, but not remembering what it was that terrified him.
He just felt scared.
Shrugging the feeling off, he splashed water onto his face and dried it with a towel hanging nearby. "Get a grip..." he scolded himself and took a heavy breath, and he stayed there, staring back at his face in the mirror for who knows how long.
On a particular off-duty afternoon at the Red Base, Spy was studying another stolen intelligence when his phone rang. Looking at who it was, he lifted a perfect eyebrow when he saw Medic's name on screen. Spy answered it and his eyes widened upon hearing seven simple words:
"Your cheri is in zhe delivery room."
Wasting no time, Spy left the Intel in Engie's hands and rushed to his car, turned the engine on and raced towards the hospital Need-for-Speed style.
When he arrived, he quickly asked where their delivery room was. When inquired who, Spy sighed impatiently when the doctor from before showed up and said: "That's Mr. Peterson."
Arriving there, he tried to push himself in, but the nurses won't let him. He'll have to wait outside. With him were four of her sons, but was informed by one of them that the other two will follow.
The other two did came...but his cheri wasn't out by then. Spy restlessly paced around the halls, hoping that when he'll return to the place he started, someone would have an update on her. After 12 hours and 18 more paces, someone went out with Medic beside him.
"How is she doctor?" Spy asked worriedly, "How are my children?"
"Mr. Peterson," the doctor began, "in the middle of the operation, there were some complications...but we were able to find a way around it and your wife is now okay, as for your twins..."
Spy waited anxiously for the next words.
"Your twins are alright...they are healthy, no deformities whatsoever were found on them. They're in good shape."
The Frenchman looked at Medic, who showed his joy through those thick, circular glasses. Spy nodded in acknowledgement and later, joined his cheri in the room she was assigned to.
"Aren't they gorgeous?" the woman asked, sighing happily as she eyed the two young lads in her arms.
"They are indeed..." the man agreed silently, too lost in the magic of what he was seeing. He sat down beside her, and for the first time in many years, his eyes were brimmed with tears, and his smile spoke a thousand words.
"I have never seen nor felt anything so beautiful, cheri..." he whispered and took one of the infants in his arms, holding it close to his chest. Tears started to fall on the newborn and try as he might, they wouldn't stop.
"It's alright...just let it out." the woman whispered, touched by the emotions this man showed.
Spy kissed the baby's downy head and sighed. "What will we call them?"
"Nathan..." his love replied almost instantly with a smile on her face, looking down at the child before her. She then looked at Spy. "What will you call him?"
After a moment of thought, Spy looked warmly at the sleeping infant and whispered: "Adam..." before kissing its brow once more. The newborn stirred for a while and released a soft groan. Spy smiled widely and kissed the baby on the same spot again.
"I love you..." he whispered and turned to his other child, who lay still in the woman's arms. He brought his bare hand onto its cheek and lightly caressed it with his thumb. Then, he cupped her face with the same hand and kissed her lovingly.
In three days, Spy could finally take his cheri out of the hospital and back to the warm abode of her home. To his dismay, he had to leave them for the day to do his job as a mercenary; they had to guard one of their bases from an incoming bomb set by the BLUs. They almost failed if it hadn't been for Medic who healed nearly everybody in time to make the last stand...and it wasn't in vain.
And so Spy returned twice a cheerful soul to the hospital and darted the way leading to her room. But as he turned a sharp corner, he found Medic carrying a bundle of cloth with familiar detailed imprints on it.
It was Adam.
"Medic, what are you doing with my son?" Spy dubiously asked, his voice coarse and low.
But before the German could answer, the Frenchman felt another presence behind him. It was another, identical Medic. He had a large bruise on his head and blood trickling down his nose. He glared at his mirror image right next to Spy.
"Spy, zat is an imposter!" he choked out weakly, "he has come for your children..."
Realizing that he has been cornered, the impostor holding Adam smirked devilishly and shifted shape. In his place, now stood the Blu Spy.
"You!" Spy yelled angrily, realizing what is at stake. "Give me back my son!"
"I'm afraid..." the enemy chuckled menacingly, pulling his black, gleaming revolver out of his blue dress coat, "that can't be arranged."
Medic's eyes widened in fear and panic as the shape shifter placed his index finger on the trigger, ready to fire any second now.
"Spy!" he managed to yell out and push the man out of the way, and the incoming bullet darted through the air and into the mercenary's shoulder, releasing a stream of blood that should have leaked out of his chest.
Lithely, Blu Spy fired another bullet at Medic and turned a heel and sprinted away, not turning back to see if he has finished the job or not. He has the child in his arms, that's all that matters, now, he needs to sneak out of the building with his life.
"Stop, you bastard!" Red Spy yelled from the distance, who staggered as the pain quickly radiated throughout his body, "Give me back my son!"
Despite the guards that are trying to apprehend and capture the criminal, Spy took his own shiny, silver revolver, The Ambassador, and aimed it at the fleeing figure. But when he pulled the trigger, all he managed to hit was his calf, and his vision spun and became distorted.
He suddenly couldn't feel, hear or see. It was all too much, he was in a state where his senses just betrayed him.
Then, when he couldn't take it anymore, the world went black with a thump.
