Chapter 16: Bonnie's Birthday
"What do you get the witch you know nothing about?" Damon asked me as we looked around the magic shop we had walked inside a week before Bonnie's birthday. Anna had dropped us off on our secret mission to find Bonnie a great gift. "Eye of newt?" Damon eyed a jar with something that looked like a frog inside out.
I rolled my eyes as I kept walking. "Can I help you boys find something?" A tall woman with blonde hair asked us. There was something about her that felt older than the way she looked. I shivered slightly.
Damon walked up to her. "Hi, I'm Damon. This is Nik. We're looking for a gift for our friend, Bonnie. She's a witch."
The woman smiled down at him. "Well, it's very nice to meet you, Damon and Nik. Let me see. How old is your friend?"
"She's six." I told her, wanting to leave.
The woman nodded. "And she's practicing already. She must be very powerful then… What's her name, honey?"
"Babcock." I supplied before Damon could answer. "I did not like this woman and I did not want her to know Bonnie's name." Giving Damon a look, I started to say that there really wasn't anything we thought our friend would like here. But before I could speak the woman picked up a necklace and a grey candle.
The woman handed the necklace to Damon. "This will guard against intruders," she told him. "And this is for you, boy." She handed the candle to me. Looking me in the eye, she frowned as she touched my hand. "There are bad sprits that surround your soul, child. Light this candle every night from now on to keep the darkness at bay because there will be hard times ahead. But there is a girl. She is your light in all that darkness. Don't let it push you apart."
I took the candle and was surprised when she pulled out a packet. "This is your present to Miss Bonnie Bennett. It's just little a glamour. She'll know what to do with it. Oh, and Damon, don't take that necklace off for anyone."
Damon and I looked at each other as we hurried out of the shop. Walking under the sign that said Gloria's I felt myself shiver.
Bonnie's birthday party:
Bonnie, Elena and Caroline were singing karoke. "There ain't no mountain high enough. There ain't no river wide enough. To keep me from getting to you, babe." Bonnie belted out as Katherine held a video camera and we clapped.
I was happy that things seemed to be going well. I had lit the candle one week ago. Damon was wearing his necklace and Bonnie had yet to test out her new gift. The girls were now dancing around together and laughing.
"This is so much fun." Bonnie was yelling over the music.
"Cupcakes are down." Rose called. She had spent a couple of months with her father, who had moved back to England after her parents split up. Carrying out a tray of cupcakes with little witches' hats and brooms on them, Rose sat the tray on the coffee table.
"Light the candles, Bonnie." Kol called.
Bonnie closed her eyes and then smiled at her work. Blowing the flames out, she picked up a cupcake and offered it to Jeremy, who grinned before shoving it into his mouth. "Yummy."
Bonnie smirked as she handed one to Damon. "Here, this is the hexed one."
Damon laughed. "Ha ha, Bon. Thanks for the sugar high." Sticking half of the cupcake in his mouth he spat it back out. Ew, what was that?"
"Hot sauce." Rose said. "It was a dare."
Bonnie grinned before handing cupcakes to Elena and Caroline, who eyed them suspiciously. "That was the only one." Rose told them.
Katherine picked up a cupcake and then gagged. "What the hell?"
"Well, I thought it was the only one." Rose said as she shrugged.
I looked at the cupcakes concerned. Pulling out the packet. I held it out to Bonnie. "I know it's not time to open the presents but I thought you might want to play with whatever this is."
Opening the packet, Bonnie looked at the powder and grinned. "Cool." She whispered to herself. Walking backward a couple of steps, she threw some of the powder while muttering to herself. My jaw dropped as twinkling lights formed around the room.
Giggling, Bonnie pulled out more powder and threw it. A puppy appeared. Caroline gasped as the puppy licked her hand. "Bonnie, a puppy," She exclaimed.
Bonnie laughed out loud as she blew more powder. Bonnie's, Caroline's and Elena's clothes were transformed into princess costumes with real crowns. Blowing more powder, Bonnie looked at Damon and then frowned. "Why aren't you a frog?"
Damon blinked at her rapidly. "A what?" He looked at the rest of us. "Did she just say she tried to turn me into a frog?"
"Yeah, so I could kiss you. Then you'd be a prince instead of the jerk you always are." Bonnie told him.
"What?" Elena yelled. "Damon is my boyfriend. You can't go around making other girls boyfriend's into frog princes."
"I'm not you boyfriend." Damon snapped at Elena.
"See he's not your boyfriend." Bonnie told her friend.
"You're supposed to be my best friend." Elena complained.
"Stop it," Caroline yelled at them.
"How would you like it if it was Klaus someone liked?" Elena snapped at Caroline.
"Who likes Klaus?" Caroline asked, concerned.
"No one," Katherine told them.
"That's not fair." Bonnie called.
"I am not little girl Gilbert's boyfriend." Damon called to anyone who would listen which they wouldn't. "I like Rose."
"Too bad. I'm far too old for you." Rose scoffed as she sat down bedside Katherine. "Move over chunky."
"I am not chunky." Katherine yelled, shoving Rose onto the floor.
Bonnie pulled more powder and blew. Instead of Katherine, there was now a piglet in the chair. "Hey, everyone. It's Babe," Stefan called, pointing at the pig which snorted indignantly.
"Bacon." Damon said, licking his lips. The pig began to squeal and tried to get out of the chair.
"That's okay, Kat." Elena patted her sister's head. "We won't let Jerk Face make you into a breakfast sandwich."
"Turn her back, Bonnie," Caroline demanded, looking at the Katherine piglet which was freaking her out.
"I dare you to turn Nik into a frog," Kol told Bonnie as Caroline howled in protest. Bonnie pulled out some powder and I've been told I was turned into a frog.
"I dare you to turn Stef into a vampire," Damon yelled as Bonnie.
"No," Stefan yelled as Bonnie threw more powder.
Falling to the floor, Stefan seemed to have passed out. "I dare you to turn Nik back into Nik." Caroline cried, desperately.
Bonnie blew more powder and I stopped ribbiting. Caroline threw her arms around my neck. "Thank you, Bonnie."
There was a sudden scream and we all turned out attention to Stefan, who was trying to bite Elena's neck. Caroline screamed when she saw his dark eyes. "What's wrong with his eyes?"
Elijah tried to pry Stefan off of Elena with the help of Mason and Alaric. However, Stefan threw them off. He dove for Elena's neck just as Lexi sped in. She yanked Stefan off of Elena and held him in front of her. "What in the God's name? Who turned you?" she demanded, looking pissed as she held Stefan's face between her hands.
"Let go of me, Lexi." Stefan demanded, trying to pull away. "I'll bite you."
"No. You won't." Lexi told Stefan as he began to settle down.
I watched Lexi's face change as she stared at Stefan. My friends gasped in shock as they stared at her face. "I'm a vampire. So, even if you bit me you couldn't hurt me. Okay?" She rubbed Stefan's back as he hugged her.
"Thank you, Lexi." Stefan whispered.
Bonnie pulled out some more powder. "Stop it." Lexi snapped at her. Bonnie dropped the powder on the floor with a pout. "I'm sorry, honey. I know it's your birthday and you want to have fun. But you turned Kat into a pig. And look at Stef here. He's a six year old vampire. That is not right, at all." Shaking her head, Lexi sat down on the floor. "I have to fix this before your Grams comes home."
"Where did you get that powder, Bonnie?" Elijah asked and I felt my cheeks heat up.
"I'm not telling," Bonnie said, folding her arms over her chest. She was not going to rat out a friend.
"I gave it to her," I sighed.
Damon rolled his eyes. "Well, this is boring. Stefan I dare you to-" He began when Lexi turned around to glare at him.
"Stop. Now. Damon. Or else." Lexi told him slowly.
Damon smirked. "Or what?"
Lexi smirked back before vamping out and snarling at him. Damon jumped back and ran into Jenna. "Or I will compel you to forget dare club," Lexi told Damon, who groaned.
"I thought you would kill me," Damon replied, rolled his eyes.
"Where did you get the powder from, Klaus?" Lexi asked me.
"Anna took us to a magic shop called 'Gloria's." I told her.
Lexi sighed before going over to the phone and dialing a number. "Anna, what were you thinking, taking the boys to Gloria's? You know that woman practices the dark arts. … Really? … Well, now Kat is a pig and Stefan is a vampire! … NO, I did not turn him. How could you think I would do such a thing? …" Tapping her foot impatiently, Lexi listened to what Anna was saying.
We watched as Lexi hang up. "Anna's going to bring Gloria here to fix this mess." Lexi informed as we looked at each other. I did not like the idea of Gloria being here. She still scared me. Badly.
Damon came over and took my hand. Caroline took my other hand. "My necklace will protect us." Damon told me. "We just need to stay in contact, like in the movies." He took Caroline's other hand and we waited for the arrival of the witch.
When the doorbell rang, I felt afraid as Lexi walked over and opened the door. Gloria and Anna walked inside. "Damon. Klaus. How nice to see you boys again so soon."
Gloria raised an eyebrow at the outfits, the piglet and the mini vampire. "Well, someone has been busy with that glamour powder. The bright side is that it won't last the day. As soon as the full moon is out tonight all the effects of the spell will end. The down side is I can't reverse the spell."
Lexi glared at Gloria and then stared at Anna. "She didn't tell me that in the car." Anna told Lexi staring at her friend with a look of worry.
"Of course, she didn't," Lexi snapped. "Gloria, please, leave."
Gloria held up her hands. "Sorry, I couldn't help you but there is no need to be rude."
Lexi looked like she was about to kill the witch as her face turned red and her hands went up. Anna walked the witch to the door quickly. "Thanks for… ummm… nothing," Anna said sweetly before shutting the door. "This is not good," she moaned, looking at the kids. Stefan was now making his way over to Kat the pig.
"Stefan Salvatore, if you move one more inch toward that pig you will not be getting any Christmas presents," Lexi yelled at Stefan, who froze.
"There is no Santa. It's just our Dad," Damon retorted, folding his arms over his chest.
"What?" Half the children yelled while Katherine snorted in a manner that sounded like she was laughing.
Anna wondered if pigs could laugh. I spoke up. "Well, maybe your father was helping Santa. After all there are a lot of houses to fill with presents." I was attempting to diffuse the situation before Kol and Bekah became hysterical.
"Who needs Santa anyway when you have your own personal witch?" Damon asked, wrapping an arm around Bonnie's shoulders, who elbowed him.
"Leave me alone, Damon," Bonnie screamed. "You ruined my birthday."
"Me?" Damon placed his hands over his heart. "I didn't make my brother into a vampire or Kat into a bacon. You did. And Nik gave you the dust. Not me."
I rolled my eyes. Leave it to Damon to make things worse. Sometimes I wanted to kill him even if he was my best friend. "Stop it," Caroline yelled at them. "This is not helping. We need to figure out how to get Stefan home without his Dad seeing him like that," she waved at Stefan's vampire face, who ducked his head. "And Kat has to go home even if she is a pig."
Our first mission was to get "Bacon" back to the Gilberts'. "So, you're a vampire?" Damon asked Lexi, staring up at her.
"Uh huh," Lexi replied as we walked to Gilberts'. Anna was carrying Katherine in her arms. Elijah kept looking at his girlfriend with a look on his face which was a mixture of amusement and horror every time she snorted.
"Do you fly?" Damon asked Lexi.
"No," Lexi replied, keeping her eyes on Stefan who kept looking at Rose's neck longingly.
"Do you have any superpowers? Because it seems kind of lame," Damon told her,
shaking his head.
Lexi turned to look at him. "I can make you believe your name is Sarah and dress up in pink every day until you're twenty," she informed him and that was the end of Damon's questioning.
Bonnie began to sniffle. Looking over, I noticed that the little witch was crying. "Hey, Bon," I called. Bonnie looked up and dried her eyes.
"This was supposed to be my day. Just one day that wasn't about Kat or Damon or other people. This was mine," Bonnie told me. "And… and I know everyone is unhappy because I just wanted to have fun. Now, my friend wants to eat people and Lena's sister is food and I just wanted for everyone to have fun and be happy…"
"It was fun, Bonnie," I told her. "From now on we have a new name for Kat and Stef doesn't mind being a vampire, I mean look at him," Stefan had leapt on Damon's back and was trying to bite him. "He's having lots of fun.
"Get off of me," Damon snapped, trying to get his brother off, who only held on tighter.
"Bite him, Stef," Elena called as Damon turned to look at her with a frown.
Bonnie began to giggle, "Damon always said Stefan was a pain in his neck."
"Love you, Bon," Caroline told Bonnie as she came over to link arms with Bonnie. "You should turn Damon into a table."
Bonnie laughed, "Why?"
"So, all he can do is stand there and he can't make his stupid remarks and stuff," Caroline sang as we walked along the path.
"Damon is a jerk," Bonnie, Caroline and Elena began to sing. "All he ever does is smirk. He makes us want to hurlk."
"That's not a word," Damon snapped as he tried to throw Stefan off.
"He makes us want to hurlk…" the girls sang, ignoring him. They sang the same song during Damon's sixteenth birthday for very different reasons.
