Hello, my lovely readers. It's time for a double b-day event. I'm not sure whether I will be able to keep up with once a week updates because I am about to begin the last term of my graduate work. We'll see… Without further ado…
Chapter 20: Happy Birthday, Klaus
Rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand and rolling over on the floor of my room, I came face to face with my best friend, Damon Salvatore. Damon poked me in the stomach. "Happy birthday, dork," he snarked at me. I looked down to find Bekah curled up at my feet. She had her arms wrapped around Leonardo DiCaprio hugging him to her. Rolling onto my back, I found Caroline with her head close to mine. My friends and siblings decorated the floor of my room. We had begun to celebrate my eighth birthday the night before. Now, everyone was asleep on the floor.
"Nik," Damon whispered to me. I moved my head to look at him. I was surprised to see he looked deadly serious. "My Dad hates me," he told me. "He always says Stefan this and Stefan that. And I'm always doing everything wrong. I hate Stefan."
I frowned, "No you don't, D."
"Yes, he does," Stefan said, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. I rolled my eyes. "He tells me all the time he does."
"No, he doesn't," Caroline told Stefan leaning over me and resting her head on my stomach to look at Stefan, who was lying by Bekah's head.
"Yeah, he does," Stefan insisted. "He tried to sell me to a stranger yesterday. For free."
"Go to sleep," Katherine moaned, stretching and kicking Elena in the shoulder, who was curled up between Bonnie and Damon.
"Ow," Elena moaned, shoving her face into Damon's back and wrapping an arm around him.
"Watch kicking the whiny one," Damon called over his shoulder which made Elena whine like Leo the puppy.
Katherine rolled over and snuggled up to Lijah. "Siblings are a pain in the ass and we just say we hate them because it makes you leave us alone for five seconds. Now, go to sleep before I toss the nosiest one of you out the window."
We stopped talking. Then Damon and I seemed to have the same idea. Slipping away from Caroline and Elena, we made our way over to Katherine. "Wake up," we screamed at her in unison causing Katherine to jump to her feet. We had to play hopscotch over the other kids to get away from Kat.
We careened down the stairs with Katherine bounding after us. "What is going on?" Anna asked, with her hands on her hips. She was standing in the kitchen, tapping her foot.
"Kat threatened to throw us out the window," Damon told her.
"And Damon tried to sell Stefan to a stranger," I blurted. Personally, I thought it was funny and was planned on trying that one on Kol sometime.
Anna smirked, "Okay, you're all going to be a handful today. Now, I made you chocolate chip scones and fresh squeezed juices. Go get the other kids and try not to kill each other."
Damon and I smirked before running back toward the staircase. "I'm going to feed you both to an alligator!" Katherine told us as she chased us back up the stairs.
"Where are you going to get one of those?" Damon questioned her. "Are you going back to the zoo you escaped from?"
Katherine almost caught Damon by the shirt collar when Lijah came out, yawning and stretching. "Good morning, Kat," He greeted Katherine and then came over to kiss her and I made a gagging face at Damon.
"I'm going to kill those two," Katherine told my older brother as he stroked her face.
"Be nice for today, my love," Elijah whispered.
My eyebrows rose and I stared at Damon in horror. I did not like the L word coming out of Elijah's mouth directed at Kat. She could not become part of my family. It was bad enough having to deal with Sage and Finn being attached at the hip all the time. I barely saw my other brother.
Walking back into my room, I came to stand over Sage and Finn, who were curled up in a corner. "Get up," I ordered them, nudging Finn with my foot.
"Not yet, Mother. It's still early," Finn muttered, tightening his hold on Sage whose one eyelid popped open and she stuck her tongue out at me. I sighed and started to walk away when they grabbed me from behind, jerking me down between them.
"Happy, Birthday, Niklaus," they told me.
"Should we spank him?" Sage asked Finn. "That's about eight times and maybe a few more for bad behavior.
Finn shook his head, "No, Niklaus, is fine with spanking. What he has a real problem with is having his feet tickled." Jerking my shoes off, Finn held me while Sage tickled my feet until I screamed for them to please stop the torture. "I'll be good. I promise."
"You're never good," Finn replied, tickling my rib cage.
"There is always a first for everything," I moaned, trying to wiggle away.
"Don't try to escape our clutches. You're just making it worse on yourself," Sage informed me.
Caroline came over and flopped down beside me. "I like to be tickled. Tickle me now," No one had to say that twice before I flipped her over and began to tickle her without mercy. Caroline giggled and squirmed.
"It's getting late. We need to eat. We'll be late," Elijah announced.
I got up and Caroline wrapped her arms around my neck from behind. I leaned down and grabbed her legs, lifting her and carrying her down the stairs. "Happy birthday, Nik," she whispered, pressing her lips to my cheek.
When we were all in the kitchen, we collected plates and cups. Walking into the Great Room, because we liked to sit on the floor rather than in the stuffy dining room, we made a wide circle. "Sugar in the morning. This is great," Andie said perkily. She had gone to see her grandmother in Texas on Matt's birthday. Now, she was back and as perky as ever.
"I wished I was allowed to have sugar on my birthday," Jenna told us.
Alaric shrugged, "Pancakes are great for breakfast every morning."
"With syrup," Mason added. "And you can always have chocolate pancakes."
"Why would you want chocolate pancakes?" Katherine asked. "They'll make you fat. Right, girls?"
"Why do you care so much about your weight?" Finn challenged Katherine. "I think Sage would be just as lovely if she weighed more."
Katherine narrowed her eyes, "Really? You think so. Well, then, Sage, you can stop dieting for the next six months. I dare you, Sage, to eat whatever you want and then we'll see if Finn is right."
I rolled my eyes, "This is stupid." Looking at Damon, we began that silent communication thing we do sometimes. "I dare everyone to wear one of Elijah's suits toda,." I announced after Damon and I had come to an agreement. Getting up, we marched up the stairs and walked into Elijah's room.
Opening Elijah's closet, I smirked at the array of suits. Pulling out a black one, I handed it to Damon. Pulling out a blue one, I handed it to Caroline. Taking out a dark gray one for myself, I stepped away for everyone else to make their selections.
After every one was dressed and pants and sleeves were pinned and rolled we went out as a long line of mini Elijahs. Anna grinned as we marched toward the door. "Well, look at you guys. This is just too adorable. Let me grab a camera."
We stood in a group like we were in a class picture. As the tallest people in our group Elijah, Finn, Mason and Ric stood in the back. Rose, Kat, Jenna and Andie stood just in front of them. Sage, Damon and I stood with Vikki in front of the older girls. Matt, Tyler, Elena, Stefan and Caroline were in front of us. Rebekah, Kol and Jeremy were in front of them with Leo in front of them.
"Wow, you have quite a following," Anna addressed me and Damon. We grinned at each other, then placed our arms around each other.
"This is not just my birthday," I announced. "This is Damon's, too."
Damon stared at me, "Really?"
"Yeah, I missed yours but now we have to celebrate," I told him. Anna snapped the picture as we looked at the camera with giant grins. I still have the picture on my mantel at home.
"It's time to go!" Elijah called. He was excited because he loved history and I had told him I wanted to go to the caves today. I wanted to see something I hadn't ever seen before.
We ended in up in one of those boring van things. Damon began to sing songs he made up, "Girls are boring because they talk too much."
"Damon sucks because he was born," Katherine sang back.
"Everyone hates Kat," Damon sang louder.
"Damon smells worse than the frog in Matt's backyard," Bonnie sang.
"Bonnie's a witch which rhymes with," Damon began before Anna gave him a look.
"Klaus is a mouse which rhymes with house and acts like a louse," Caroline sang making me shake my head.
"Caroline is full of spunk and she can be a little punk," I sang back.
"Nik and Care are very square," Rose sang to us.
"Rose can't give a good dare," I sang to her.
"We don't Care about your dares," Jenna sang patting Care and me on the top of our heads.
Damon and I stuck our tongues out at her. "Wait until we dare you to spray paint your hair," we sang to her.
"You'll wake up in terror, we swear," Rose, Jenna, Andie and Kat sang to us.
"We're here, my dears," Anna sang to us. We began to stare, "What? You can't have all the singing fun. Now, be careful. I'll be just outside. If you need me, yell."
Damon and I led the group into the caves. Elijah began to prattle about the age of the caves and I rolled my eyes. Caroline came skipping toward me with Bonnie and Elena. She took one step and started to fall when I grabbed her. "Be careful." I told her.
"Why? You'll always catch me," Caroline told me with a giggle before she ran off ahead of us. I chased after her with Damon, Elena and Bonnie pursuing us to the darkest parts of the cave.
"Don't run!" Rose yelled at us.
"Let them go," Katherine retorted. "Maybe they'll disappear and we'll never have to deal with Klaus or Damon again."
"Get bent, Kat," Damon shouted, his voice echoing off the walls.
"You first," Katherine shouted back.
"Stop fighting," Elena yelled at them and then screamed as she hit a wall. "Ow," she hollered.
"Elena?" Bonnie shouted. "Where are you?"
"Elena? Bonnie?" Caroline called, her voice bouncing off the walls. "Anyone? Help me."
I stared into the darkness of the caves, blinking, trying to see Caroline ""Car-o-line?" I shouted.
"N-i-K," Caroline shouted back. "Where are you?"
"Nik?" Damon said to me, grabbing me by the jacket. "Where the hell is everyone?" We looked back and saw no one.
"Hello?" I shouted. There was no answer. "Lijah? Finn?"
"Kath-er-INE," Damon screamed at the top of his lungs.
"D-A-MON," Stefan called out. "DAMON! It's dark and I FELL. It hurts D-A-MON."
"STEF," Damon shouted, letting go of me. "I have to find my brother now."
I felt helpless as Damon ran away in the direction he thought his brother had gone in. "Elijah! Finn!" I yelled. "Kat! Sage! Car-O-LINE." Feeling my heart begin to beat harder, I kept spinning around not hearing anyone call back to me. I began to walk toward an opening. "Come on, everyone. This is not funny."
Moving through the entryway, I peered into an even darker part of the cave. Slipping on something, I fell on my knees. "DAMON," I screamed. "Car-o-line, please, say something."
There was a sudden scream from another part of the caves that sounded like Elena. I did not want to be the one to save her. But I didn't hear anyone else saying anything to her. There was another scream and I was scrambling for the area where I thought she was.
When I got to the area where the screaming was coming from, I found Elena curled up in a corner. "Leave me alone!" Elena screamed at an adult, who was standing front of her.
I came skidding in front of her. "Stay away from her," I yelled. "My brothers are coming and they'll hurt you if you touch her."
The adult moved toward us and then grinned down at us. "No, they aren't. They're not coming for you. Either of you. The girl was going to be a nice little snack, but, look the main course arrived." The woman's eyes glowed black and my heart sped up.
The vampire leaned down to bite me when there was the sound of someone running toward us. She pulled back and snarled when a rock hit her in the face. "Don't you touch him!" Caroline shouted, picking up another rock and throwing it at the vampire. Damon was standing beside her. He picked up another rock and was about to throw it when the vampire grabbed him and threw him into the wall behind me.
I gasped in shock, watching Damon's body slide to the floor and Elena screamed again. The vampire then grabbed Caroline and threw her into me. "I'm going to suck your little friend dry and then you, little girl," the vampire informed us.
We backed up against the wall when Bonnie and Rebekah entered. "Ah, more snacks," the vampire smirked before wrapping her cold hand around my neck and pulling me to her. I waited for her teeth to enter my neck, like in the movies.
"Get off of my brother," Bekah snarled, stepping forward with Bonnie. She took Bonnie's hand and then raised both her hands. "OFF! NOW!" she screamed.
The vampire dropped me slumping to the floor and screamed in pain before her body slammed into the wall, even harder than Damon's had. Bekah let go of Bonnie's hand and then she glared at the vampire, who pushed herself to her feet. "Get Lena," Bekah ordered Bonnie.
Bonnie wordlessly ran over and helped Elena out of the room. I stared at the girl, who was still a baby in my eyes. The vampire looked at my sister and cocked her head. "A baby witch. Isn't that cute. Wonder how cute you'll be without a tongue, baby?"
Bekah lifted a hand and began to chant in some language I did not know as the vampire began to levitate and then slammed into the wall again. "No one hurts my Niky." Bekah told the vampire. Damon was coming to and Elena helped him to his feet. Damon picked up something and hid it behind his back. I crossed the area as the vampire began to get up again.
"I'm going to kill you first, you little brat," The vampire snarled at Bekah.
Bekah raised her hands again as a trail of blood began to run down from her nose. Damon and I walked up behind the vampire while she continued to threaten my sister. Damon pulled the piece of wood from behind his back and I wrapped my hands around his and we shoved it through the vampire's back.
When the vampire fell to its knees, we ran as fast as we could out of the cave. Bekah held up a hand and a light appeared in front of us. "Nik! Damon! ELENA!" We heard voices yelling.
Katherine appeared with Stefan on her back. "Hey, are you okay?" Kat questioned us. "Stef here, fell and skinned his knees. I got separated from Lijah and the others. I kept hearing Lena and Damon. I was trying to find you two. But I couldn't. There were just so many turns. And then some weirdo claiming to be a vampire tried to give me a hickey. And I kicked him where it hurts. I hate these stupid tunnels. Now, let's find everyone else and get the hell out of here before the pervert comes back."
Kat talked while we were walking away as quickly as possible. "Then I'll bake Klaus' cake myself if we get out of here alive."
"You promise?" I asked her, keeping an eye out for creepy fanged adults.
"Promise," Kat told me walking with Elena and Damon on either side of her.
"Katherine," Lijah called. "Katherine, can you hear me?"
"Kids," Anna yelled while we hurried along.
"Anna!" Caroline called and Anna appeared in front of us. All of us screamed.
"Anna, there was a vampire and she tried to eat Niky," Bekah told her while wrapping her arms around Anna's legs reverting to the little sister I knew. "She was awful," Bekah moaned as Anna picked her up.
"What do you mean there was a vampire in here?" Anna asked, staring at Bekah.
"There was," Damon told her.
"Yeah!" Elena nodded, looking terrified.
"There are no such thing as vampires!" Katherine told us, shaking her head.
"Yeah, there are," Damon snapped. "Anna's a vampire. Aren't you, Anna?"
Anna nodded and Katherine paled as Elijah appeared and placed a hand on her shoulder. Katherine screamed and nearly dropped Stefan. "Dear God, Lijah. Could you speak first?" Katherine yelled at my brother as Rose grabbed her shoulder and Katherine screamed again.
When we were all accounted for Anna told us to get in the van. She kept looking around the van and then counted heads twice after we got into the van. When we got back to my home Katherine went into the kitchen and began to make the cake. No one had to dare her to do it. Of course, Rose, Andie, Jenna and Sage went in to help her. Elijah had to dare his friends to help.
"I dare you to eat the icing," Damon whispered to ne, Stefan, Elena and Caroline. We stared at the bowl of icing that Katherine had just whipped up.
I walked into the kitchen, "Hey, Kat. I love Red Velvet cake. Can you make one of those because I'm not sure we have those ingredients?" I questioned Katherine going over to the fridge and waving the others over. Damon slid the bowl of icing off the table and then ran off. After a pause I slipped out of the kitchen while the older kids argued about how to get the right ingredients.
I ran up the stairs to my room. Opening my door, I closed it behind me. Sticking my finger in the bowl, I stuck it in my mouth. "Um, that's good." Soon the bowl was empty and we felt a sugar buzz.
"Need to go find my presents." I said rushing out of the room and running down the stairs. Matt, Tyler, Bonnie, Jeremy, Kol and Bekah were downstairs and were too close to my presents. When I looked at them, I had a funny feeling something was off.
"What did you do?" I asked the younger kids, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Nothing," Tyler told me too fast.
"Matt, what did they do?" I asked, knowing that Matt was not a good liar.
Matt just shook his head, opened his mouth and tried to speak. But he couldn't.
"Did you do a spell on him?" I asked, Bonnie shocked.
Bonnie shook her head, "No."
I then turned to look at Bekah, who wiped her nose leaving her hand stained pink. "Stop doing magic, Bekah," I told her.
Bekah narrowed her eyes at me, "NO!" She yelled and then ran off.
Shaking my head, I began to pick up presents. "Help me with these?" I asked the other kids. They picked up presents and carried them upstairs. The minute I set them down the other kids said they needed to go home and then hurried away. Kol stayed, his eyes glowing.
I wondered what was going on. Opening the first present, I found a paint set from my parents. That wasn't disturbing. What was strange was when the pad opened and the paint set popped. The brush walked to my bathroom and wet itself. Walking back in, it dipped itself in the paint and began to make a picture.
This was strange. I opened the next present, a toy car with a remote control. No more was the box open than the car began to careen around my room. Then there were the toys soldiers which lined up and then began to march about. All of my presents seemed to have minds of their own. I heard a scream from downstairs.
We ran down and found the toy soldiers doing combat in the kitchen. The toy car was chasing Katherine about. "Stop that thing!" Katherine shouted, hopping on top of the counter. The car began to bump against the cabinet door trying to get at her.
A tiny toy solider began to wave a sword and attempted to stab Mason in the shoulder. He grabbed it and flung it into a wall. The soldier got up, shook its head and attempted to attack Jenna who stepped on him.
Picking up one of the toy soldiers, Alaric winced when it lifted a tiny pistol and shot the wall behind him. Opening the window, Alaric threw the soldier into the lawn.
Another group of soldiers came in with a tiny canon and I shouted, "Everyone on the floor. Now." Everyone dropped to the floor as the tiny soldier lit the back of the canon and then there was a nice sized hole in our ceiling.
"Holy shit," Damon exclaimed. "Grab a soldier and throw the damn things out the freakin' window," Damon commanded us, grabbing a little man, who wiggled in his grip. Tossing him out the window, Damon grinned, "Bye bye, freaky toy. Sorry, Nik. They weren't supposed to do that."
Caroline grabbed one of the little soldiers and threw it to Damon, who was sitting on the counter tossing little men out the window. Then he tossed the canon. We heard several little screams. Damon's grin widened. "Cool. They went squash."
"What in the world?" Anna yelled as she strode into the room with a bag filled with items we needed for the cake making.
"Little soldiers," Alaric told her.
"Lots of little soldiers," Elijah said, staring out the window. "Damon, how many did you throw out the window?"
Damon shrugged, "Five. I think," he said as he looked out the window.
"And how many came in the package?" Elijah asked, looking unhappy.
"Twenty…" Damon replied with a scowl.
Anna set the bag down, "You mean there are more of those things?"
"And Gremblins." Kol piped up.
"What are Grembelins?" Elijah asked as Mason and Alaric traded looks with Damon.
"Water!" Damon shouted, "Someone is running water. No!"
We raced up the stairs to find more toy soldiers doing battle in the hallway. There was steam coming out of the bathroom and the sound of maniacal laughter as something crawled out of the bathroom.
However, that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was when Anna was looking for Finn and Sage. Opening the door to Finn's bedroom, I gaped at Sage in her bra on the bed with Finn. "Huh," Damon said, looking at the two, who seemed embarrassed.
"Get out of that room. Right now," Anna snapped at them. "What is wrong with you kids today? Trying to get eaten by vamps, living toys and now teenagers trying to mate. On My watch. Grrr…"
Anna's eyes glowed black and we took a collective step back. She turned from us, ripping the door to the bathroom open and then the laughter stopped followed by several hideous screams which would give us nightmares for months to come. When Anna came out she was covered in Gremblin goop but seemed more relaxed. "Okay, where are the soldiers? I'm hungry."
I pointed down the hall. "Go make the cake. I'll be down soon. After you eat, go to bed. Sage and Finn, you will be sleeping on opposite sides of the room tonight."
"Yes, Anna," we replied before piling down the stairs. Bekah was sitting on the floor of the kitchen pouting.
"Bekah, what were you thinking?" I asked, looking down at my baby sister.
"I wanted you to have fun," Bekah said wiping away some tears.
I picked her up. "I know but you have to be more careful," I told her.
"Kay," Bekah replied.
"Now, we're going to watch Katherine make a cake." I told her.
"Where's the car?" Caroline asked appearing at my side.
"It's chasing Kol around the other room," Bekah told her with a shrug.
Elijah sighed. "I will go take care of that. Come, Bekah." Holding out his hand, Elijah took our little witch with him.
Caroline leaned against my side. "Are you having fun?"
"Yes," I told her placing my head on top of hers.
"I'm sleepy," Caroline told me with wide yawn.
"Me, too," I said yawning as well.
It had been a very long day and I was not sure I had the energy to stay up for the cake to be made. "Come on you two, you have to stay up for the cake." Damon told us.
"Yeah," Elena added coming to stand next to Damon who rolled his eyes.
"Can you not find someone else to bug? Go find my brother." Damon ordered Elena, who pouted.
Klaus yawned again as Elena walked away. Caroline was yawning, too. "Can we have the cake tomorrow?" I asked Damon, who shook his head.
"Nope. Got to do it tonight, Nik. Times a wasting. We're not going to live forever, you know." He forced me and Caroline to grab cake and sit down. Bonnie lit a candle on my piece of cake and one on Damon's. We grinned at each other knowing what the other was thinking. We wished to be friends for the rest of our lives. I would say we got what we wished for.
Present:
I was having a pretty fair day. Damon had talked Caroline into letting me leave our house for a spell. Walking to the local park felt amazing but I was winded when we arrived, though it was mere blocks from my house. Elena and Damon lived next to us. Caroline and Elena wanted our children to grow up together.
"Are you still telling Elena to leave you alone?" I asked with a wide grin as Damon retrieved a bundle from the stroller he had brought with us.
"All the time," Damon retorted, gathering the tiny creature with wide ice blue eyes into his arms. "Hello, Nicola," Damon called to his little girl. If you're curious the baby girl was named after me. Yes, Damon logic. He thought he was being quite funny when he named the baby Nicola Joesphina Salvatore.
I rolled my eyes but smiled when there was a cry from the stroller. "And there goes the other," I called.
Damon held out Nicola to me. "Can you take her?"
I frowned. "What if I drop her? Or if I hold her wrong?" I protested as Damon rolled his eyes. He took my arms and made a cradle before placing the infant into my arms.
"You won't drop her because you love her," Damon told me before retrieving his son. "And I have great reflexes now."
"How is the transition going?" I inquired, rocking Nicola in my arms and then looking at her twin, Cary Grayson Salvatore. Again, this was Damon logic. He had signed the papers naming the babies after me and Caroline, switching our names about to please himself.
"It's fine. I feel great. Elena's getting a lot of sleep because I'm running around the house taking care of things before she can think of them. I haven't even tried to eat one of the kids yet. That has been the highlight," Damon informed me. "Lena's going to go ahead with the transition when she feels she's strong enough."
"Oh," I said. I could tell this was leading to another conversation where he tried to talk me into turning. I half expected him to feed me his blood, snap my neck and go waltzing away to await my vengeance.
Truth be told, I wasn't sure why I hadn't turned yet. Life is funny like that. You don't always know why you're dragging your feet about. Getting up, Damon told me it was time to get back. I felt odd. It felt like mere minutes when it was two hours.
When I arrived home, Caroline came out of the kitchen, beaming. "Happy birthday, honey."
"Thank you, love," I replied.
"I have a present for you," Caroline announced.
"Oh," I inquired. "It's been so long. But I think I might be able to -" The words dried up in my mouth when a boy of no more than five came out from around the corner. He stared up at me.
"Klaus, this is Dylan. Dylan this is Klaus," Caroline told the boy, who continued to stare up at me with wide eyes. "He lost his family in a house fire last year and I thought that he could stay with us for a while. If it's okay with both of you? Maybe longer, if you like each other." Caroline's eyes were wide as she waited for us to react.
I looked down at the boy and had no idea what to say. "Hello there, mate."
"You talk funny," Dylan said and his expression reminded me of Damon's at about that age; his eyes were sparkling with the same type of amusement. "Caroline said you like to draw. I like to draw, too."
"I do like to draw," I told the child.
"Do you wanna see my drawings?" Dylan asked, staring up at me, his eyes pleading with me.
"I would love to see your drawings," I told the boy, who ran back to the kitchen.
Caroline wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me quickly, "Thank you."
Dylan came running back to place his sketches on the coffee table. "This is me and Caroline. I didn't know you. I have to draw you in, too." Taking a pencil, the boy began to draw me into the picture as Caroline and I sat down together. This is the one wish I had had over the years that I did not believe I would ever have, a family with the woman that I love.
NiklausxKaterina, I could try to write the story you asked for some time over the summer. I'm not sure how good it will be due to my Klaroline worship but I will try my best to make it work.
