Chapter 3
Fours Pov
I woke up with a smile, it's Wednesday so it's Christina's party tonight. Parties are definitely not my thing, I've only been to a few, but I'll go to this one, not because I know Tris is going and I want to see her, but…well yeah that's kind of the reason but I'm not going to admit that, I've only just met her! And plus she probably thinks I'm an idiot, bumping in to her on her first day, then suddenly walking up to her and talking to her about how I wanted a date with her friend, Christina. I don't want to go out with Christina anyway, it was a dare from Zeke my best friend.
I throw the covers off me and stumble out of bed, I sit up and look at my clock. 8:08. Crap! School starts in less than an hour. I jump up and run to the bathroom to have a 10 minute cold shower which really wakes me up. As soon as I'm back in my bedroom I pull open the drawers frantically searching for clothes. I finally pick out, black jeans, a white top with a black unbuttoned shirt over it, I snatch my school bag from my desk chair and run down stairs, then grab my black Nike high tops from the shoe cupboard. It's only 8:35 but I have to walk to school which takes 15 minutes. If I walk quickly, I'll get to school just on time.
When I get to school I don't go looking for Zeke, because the bell has already gone, I go straight to my locker and shove my bag in it. As I turn away from my locker I see Tris making her way to class with Christina and Will. Will has his arm over Christina's shoulders and they're all laughing. "Hey Tris!" I call out, the words fly out of my mouth before I can stop them. She turns round to see who called and her eyes land on me.
"Hey." She says with a questioned look on her face. She is probably wondering why I am even talking to her since I am two years older than her.
I don't even know why I said hi, so I decide to say with a smile on my face "You did well yesterday. I'm sure you'll be part of Dauntless, Tori will make up her mind before lunch."
"Okay, thanks!" she says and turns around and starts walking with Christina and Will again. I don't know what I was expecting, for her to walk with me instead? Or for her to just become friends with me?
I find Zeke in my first class which is Modern Studies. "Hey" I say as I approach him, and sat down next to him.
"Hey, how ya doing?" he says "Why so late?"
"Slept in." I say with a slight laugh. Mr Ashton has already started his class. "So are you going to that party thingy Christina in S4 is having?" I whisper to Zeke.
"Not sure. Why?" Zeke whispers back.
"No reason, I was just -"
"Four! Would you please stop talking in my class or you will get a punishment!" Mr Ashton interrupts me.
"Sorry sir." I say and when Mr Ashton turns back to the board, I turn to Zeke and roll my eyes.
In Modern Studies I didn't concentrate at all, all I was thinking about was Tris, how she ran away from school without question or hesitation and how she jumped into the car when I came to pick her up as if she already trusted me.
"…Four?" Mr Ashton was apparently talking to me. Zeke nudged me with his elbow.
"Uh…yeah…sorry, what?" I said, embarrassed.
"I said, in what year were woman allowed to start voting?" Mr Ashton was getting angry at me.
"Uh…1920?" I say not quite sure of myself.
"Are you asking me or telling me?" Mr Ashton says
"Uh…telling you?" I say, oh great.
"Yes! Well done, that was right, maybe you listen more than I thought." Phew!
By the time third period came I felt as if it was at least lunch time, today was going so slowly. It was an assembly in third period so my class made their way to the assembly hall. As I entered into the hall I could see Tris sitting a few rows from the front, so I decided to sit a few rows behind her with Zeke to the left of me and Lauren – one of my other friends – sat at the other side of me. Half way through the assembly I got bored out of my mind and I couldn't help but think about how much I wanted to write Tris a note so I decided to do it. I ripped some paper out of one of my jotters I had with me and wrote: Hey Tris! Pretty boring huh? Your first assembly right? Anyways I was wondering if u would like to have lunch with me? – 4.
I folded the note and nudged Zeke and told him to make everyone pass my note down to Tris, and I watched as the note was passed from one person to the other, I started to feel nervous as the note was passed to Christina and she whispered to Tris as she gave her it. I watch her read the note and I could just see a slight smile on the half of her face I could see. I started to feel a little less nervous now I know she smiled. I saw her turn the paper over and put her head down to write something, then I watched as the note was passed back to me. I grabbed the note from Zeke and immediately started to read it, it said: Hey! I didn't know u were here. I would really like to have lunch with u, meet u just outside the assembly doors? – Tris
I ripped out another bit of paper from my jotter and wrote back saying: Awesome - 4. Then I watched again as the note was passed back to Tris and watched her read it and again, half her face smiled.
After that, the assembly seemed to take even longer! I couldn't stand it. Finally when the end came and we were told to go for lunch I walked straight to the doors without waiting for Zeke. Tris was already there because her row was allowed out first. "Hey" I said as I approached her. 'Pretty' was definitely not the right word to describe her, she was small and slim with not much curve, but she was beautiful and she was not like any other girl.
"Hey" she said blushing a little. We started to walk towards the canteen and the noise of everyone coming out of the assembly hall surrounds us. "So why do you want to have lunch with me?" she asks. I can tell she isn't very confident in herself.
"Why wouldn't I?" I say. She looks at me from the corner of her eye without a smile and raises her eyebrows a little. She really does want to know why. "Because I like you, Tris. You seem…uh…cool." Cool? She laughs a little at that. I didn't realise how awkward this would be.
We line up in the cool food isle, I grab a sandwich and some Dauntless cake and Tris grabs a wrap. "Have some Dauntless cake it so good!" I say, I'm a big fan of Dauntless cake.
"Okay!" Tris says and grabs some off the counter. We went to sit down on a bench with her friends. We were sitting opposite each other.
"Hey Four!" Christina shouted from next to Tris with her mouth full of food, I hated it when people did that. "You better come to my awesome party tonight!" she said very confident it will be awesome.
"Yeah, I'm coming." I say.
"Good!" she says "Tris is coming!" she says and raises her eyebrows.
"Christina!" Tris says harshly but quietly, and she nudges Christina hard with her elbow.
Zeke, Lauren and Shauna come to sit next to me, Tris and her friends during lunch and we all talk about random stuff. Later in lunch, Tori walks up to all of us. "Tris!" she says.
"Yeah?" Tris said. I really hope she will be in Dauntless! I really kind of like her.
"Welcome to Dauntless!" Tori said excitedly.
"Yes!" Christina shouted and jumped in to hug Tris. Tris' face lit up and wrapped her arms around Christina. I smiled too, only because I couldn't help it.
"Congrads, Tris." I say trying to fight of how happy I am.
"Thanks!" she says still with a huge grin on her face.
"Congratulations! I gotta go, Bye guys!" Tori says then starts to walk away, everyone shouts "bye."
After lunch I had two more periods, I had a free period first so I just went to the library and studied, then I had P.E last. They were both pretty boring although in P.E a guy in my year go beat up by a girl in my year, so that was pretty funny to watch.
When I get home I get ready for Christina's party. I put on some black jeans and a black and white checked shirt. I spike up my hair a little with some gel and put my black high top converses on. It's only 5:00 by the time I'm ready, the party doesn't start till 6:30 so I just hang around my house for a while. My dad went away for a work thing and won't be back until Monday so he shouldn't have a problem with me going to a party, if he doesn't find out. My dad isn't the best of people…
Finally when 6:15 came I get in to my black BMW and make my way to Christina's house. I park my car on the street and walk up Christina's drive way, her house is huge. I walked up to her front door, knocked and went in. There were quite a lot of people already here, I saw Zeke in the living room, in the middle of a crowd so I made my way over to him. "Four!" Zeke shouted, he sounded a bit drunk, and made his way past everyone surrounding him.
"Zeke!" I shouted back. Zeke came over to me and wrapped his arm around my neck, stumbling into me. I quickly steadied myself so I wouldn't fall over. He handed me a bottle of beer.
"Where have you been Four?!" Zeke said slurring his words, and he sounded worried.
"It's only 6:35, man!" I said "Why are you so drunk, already?"
"It's only 6:35?!" he asked and his eyes widened.
"Yeah, dude, you need help!" I said jokingly.
"I really do…" Zeke said, looking about. "I KNOW!" he shouted right in my ear, I jumped. He laughed "dude, you got a fright! ANYWAY! I know what will help…Dauntless cake!" he got off me and staggered to the kitchen. I looked about to see if Tris was here but I couldn't find her, so I took a swig from the beer Zeke gave me and hang around with my half drunk friends.
