Caroline didn't know when she had fallen asleep but the startling sound of a voice that she could never forget almost brought tears to her eyes. "Caroline… listen to me."
Her eyes suddenly snapped open and she could see her. A face that Caroline hadn't seen in years hovered over her and Caroline at once felt peace. She slowly sat up and faced the beautiful woman, whom she resembled so much.
"Mother? What are you doing here?" Caroline knew that this must have been a dream, but she prayed that it was possibly real. "My sweet, beautiful daughter. My how you have grown." Caroline tried to hold back the tears, but it was impossible.
"Mother…" She rushed towards the woman and the comfort of being in her arms surrounded her. "My darling, I don't have much time." Caroline finally let her go, just enough to look at her. "I don't understand…"
Her mother gave her a soft smile, "Caroline, you have to be warned. Trust only those who you believe you can. Others will only use you, but in your heart you will know what to do when the time is right."
Caroline could feel the truth in her mother's words but she still frowned. "I don't know who to trust, mother. My life feels like it's spiraling out of control and I just can't stop it. I'm powerless against those who want to use me only for their selfish gain. I miss you and father so much."
"We never wanted to leave you. Caroline you have all the power you need, you just need to learn how to use it. I'm so sorry, sweetheart but…. We were trying to protect you."
Caroline frowned deepened. "Protect me from what?" Her mother's eyes held so much hatred at her next words, "Mikael."
Caroline jumped up and she could feel the pounding of her heart. 'That was the most intense dream I've had of my mother since… she passed.' Caroline closed her eyes for a moment and calmed down.
A loud knocking at the door startled her and she quickly regained her composure. "Who is it?" The soft voice of a maid from outside responded with a message from Elijah and Rebekah requesting her at the dining hall.
"Tell them I will be there shortly." Caroline replied loudly. She thought back to the dream with her mother. 'I can't be sure if this was a trick or actually my dead mother trying to tell me something.'
Caroline unwillingly got out of the warm bed and looked around the room. The large chest that held her belongings was at the foot of the bed. She sighed in relief and opened the chest. She pulled out the first dress she could find, satisfied at the one that was chosen.
She remembered Rebekah buying it for her when they were still living in Spain and she had been mesmerized by the fabric. The beautiful golden dress hugged her body, giving her more shape then she initially thought she had.
Caroline made her way to the washing room to clean her face and fix her messy hair, braiding it down her back. After she approved of her appearance, she left the room and made her way to the dining hall.
She could feel the stress coming over her in waves at the recollection of the first time she had been in the room. The time when Mikael had told her of her fate and his plans for her.
Cold chills ran down her spine at the sight of his evil smile appearing in her mind. 'This time will be different. I'm stronger now and I know what I'm against.' "Good morning, Caroline." Caroline jumped at the voice and hastily turned around.
Klaus was standing a few feet behind her giving her a dimpled smile. Caroline huffed and muttered "Morning." Before turning back around and making her way.
"Did you sleep well?" his voice called. Caroline didn't bother turning around as she replied. "Yes." The sound of his footsteps following her only made her more annoyed. Finally after him following for a few moments Caroline quickly turned around, furious. "Klaus, you could please-"
The hardness of his body hitting hers almost made her fall to the ground. Before she fell she could feel his hands reaching out to grab her shoulders. 'Why does he always have to be so close?!'
"Caroline?" She snapped out of her thoughts and met his eyes. "Yes?" She whispered. "I asked you if you are alright. I didn't mean to run into you." She shook her head, clearing herself of the thoughts that she had been conflicted with all morning long.
"I'm sorry. I had a very strange dream last night that has been bothering me. I shouldn't have been so rude to you." When she looked up she noticed the look upon his face, "What is it?" she asked softly.
"What did you dream about, Caroline?" he questioned her. Caroline took a deep breath trying to calm her nerves when her mother's words came back to her. Trust only those you believe you can.
"I dreamt of my mother… it's almost as if she came back to warn me. Of what I don't know, but she was so real Klaus. I just-" Caroline tried to hold back the sob, but she couldn't help it as the tears came down her face.
Before she knew it Klaus had wrapped his arms around her. Caroline could only cry harder as he comforted her. She buried her head in his shoulder for what seemed like hours, but it was only a few moments.
She pulled away from him but couldn't look him in the eye. "Caroline, look at me. Please." She hesitated, not sure if she wanted to. When she felt his fingers underneath her chin tilting her head to look at him she wanted to close her eyes but didn't.
His stormy blue eyes locked on to hers and held such protection and determination she knew telling him about the dream was the right decision. "I promise, we will find out the truth about your dream. If you have any more, let me know. We will talk to the Bennett witch about it. I want you to feel safe. I won't let anything happen to you."
Caroline couldn't move as he slowly let his hand fall, and took a step back from her. Klaus gave her a soft smile, "My brother and sister are expecting you for breakfast. I will seek you out later and we will speak more about everything."
With that he turned away from her and strolled around the hallway. Caroline cleared her throat and wiped her face, trying to make herself more suitable. She moved down the hallway and turned towards the room where she knew the siblings where waiting for her. She curtsied to the maids in the hallway and then watched as the opened the door to the massive dining hall.
Caroline's eyes squinted and had to adjust to the light in the room. She saw Rebekah and Elijah sitting across from one another talking amongst themselves. They were so wrapped up in their conversation that they didn't notice when she entered the room.
Caroline lightly coughed to capture their attention. Elijah turned to her and gave her a small smile. He stood up and being a gentleman pulled the chair out for her as she approached him. She quickly sat down and turned to look at Rebekah.
She could tell the blonde girl was furious over what they had been talking about but Caroline didn't question it. "Thank you, Elijah. I was informed that Rebekah and you wished to speak to me?" She asked bluntly and getting to the point.
A light laugh could be heard coming from Elijah, while Rebekah just glared at her. "Yes, dear Caroline. We did. We have some news that we would like to share with you, don't we Rebekah?" Caroline turned to look at Rebekah, but the blonde girl turned away from her and was more fascinated with the food than the conversation about to take place.
"Ignore her, Caroline. Rebekah is somewhat upset with what Nikalus and I have planned." She took her focus off Rebekah and turned to her left to stare at Elijah. Caroline took a breath and asked "What plans, and how do they involve me?"
Elijah sighed before he reached for his goblet, before he took a sip he told her quietly "We have decided to join forces with the werewolves and throw a masquerade party in two days time." Caroline started at him in shock, now realizing why Rebekah was so quiet.
"So the master plan, is to team up with the other enemies who want me dead also?" Caroline screamed, her breathing becoming erratic from her anger building up. She wanted to say more but was cut off when Rebekah spoke with a sarcastic tone "Apparently, they're not the enemies and they don't want you dead. They want you to bare them a child.
Caroline could feel the throbbing of a headache beginning as Rebekah stood up and began screaming at Elijah. "If father finds out about this, then we are as good as dead Elijah! What are you and Klaus thinking!? Have you both gone mad!?"
Caroline didn't say a word, as Rebekah kept the temper tantrum up. "A child?" she whispered. That's when she noticed out of the corner of her eyes Elijah staring at her. "Caroline, I know this is a lot to take in. I do, but you must to what is necessary for yourself to live. You and I can only be connected for so long before the spell is broken. Maybe till the next full moon. Which is-"
"My birthday.." Caroline finished for him. This was to much, and she didn't want to hear another word. She quickly stood up and ran not caring if Elijah was yelling for her. She pushed opened the oak doors and flew down the hallway.
She didn't have Stefan to talk to, so that left only one person. While they had not been talking to each other much she felt there was no one else that would understand her situation. She ran down the hallways, feeling lost but somehow knowing where she was going the whole time.
She finally reached the door and pounded on it, praying that Bonnie would answer her. "Bonnie! Please open the door!" Caroline didn't care at the moment, she fell to her knees and leaned on the door. She felt so alone and knew there would be no one to comfort her this time.
