When they arrived back at the mansion Klaus pulled Caroline along, searching for Elijah. "Brother! Where are you?" She could tell by Klaus' tone he was angry and was grateful it was directed at someone else other than her. "Come out Elijah! We need to speak!"
Caroline quickened her steps in order to keep up with Klaus. She tried to pry her hand out of his but there was no use, he wasn't letting her go. They rounded the corner as Klaus came to a stop. Caroline almost ran into the back of him but stopped herself just in time.
"Elijah…" Klaus spoke harshly. Caroline peered around Klaus and noticed that the vampire was not alone. "Bonnie!" She cried. Bonnie's eyes were soft as she smiled at her, but her features hardened at Klaus. Bonnie was the first to speak, "Klaus we need to talk."
Caroline tilted her head to look at Klaus trying to read his expression. From his posture she could tell he was tense, but a sigh of relief passed through her when he nodded his head. "Yes… but not here. Let's take these matters somewhere private."
She watched as Bonnie glanced at her, but nodded her head in agreement and they began walking down the hallway. "My room." Bonnie whispered between them. They all walked down the long hallway and Caroline noticed that Klaus' hand never left hers.
When they reached the room, Bonnie closed and locked the door. She watched as Bonnie went to her wardrobe and began searching through it. "Bonnie, may I ask what are you doing?" Elijah questioned.
Caroline watched the dark-skinned girl finally stop and pulled out some sort of herb. "This will help us, if we do not wish to be overheard. It's a cloaking spell of sorts." Bonnie placed the herb in the fireplace and the room filled with an aroma of Jasmine.
"Alright, now we can speak. Elijah, what are Genevieve and you doing behind my back?" Klaus spoke as his hand tightened on hers. Elijah pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment, before speaking. "Niklaus, it was not Genevieve who told me this… but the Bennett witch."
Caroline confusedly looked at Bonnie and Elijah, waiting for the rest of his explanation. Before Elijah could continue Bonnie interrupted, "What he speaks of is a counter curse to the one that was place on your bloodline, Caroline. Call it a loophole if you will. What Elijah speaks of is true though. If your bloodline were to connect with that of a werewolf then the curse would be broken."
She could hear Klaus take in a deep breath before he responded, "So Caroline would have to have a child of her own with the werewolf gene. Explain how that would break the curse." He demanded. "Caroline, when you reach the age of twenty-one, Mikael doesn't plan on making you into a vampire. The curse he told everyone was a lie."
Caroline could feel the intensity of the room shift with Bonnie's words. She looked up at Klaus and saw the anger that was held in his eyes. Elijah was the first to break the tension, "What exactly is the curse and why would our father lie?" Everyone in the room looked at Bonnie and waited impatiently for her to speak.
Bonnie's head fell and Caroline couldn't take anymore, "Please Bonnie, tell us. I need to know." Bonnie's eyes met hers, "You will be blood linked to every triggered werewolf and anyone else carrying the gene. When the full moon is the highest in the sky, Mikael will end their lives by taking yours." Bonnie quietly whispered, with tears gathering in her eyes.
Caroline could feel the air being sucked out of her lungs. She had always known deep down that there was something that Mikael had been hiding but this wasn't what she had been expecting. She felt Klaus let go of her hand gently and watched as her turned away from her.
"This is absurd. Father would not lie to us- Niklaus, after all these years. Do you believe this non-sense?" Caroline snapped her head towards Elijah, "Why would Bonnie lie?" the words left her mouth harshly than she intended but she didn't care.
Everyone in the room didn't say anything for a few minutes before Klaus broke the awkward silence. "What do we do Bennett Witch?" Bonnie didn't speak for a few moments and Caroline's worry increased. She knew her life was on the life, but she didn't know what to do.
"If Caroline had a child with a triggered werewolf, the curse would be broken because of the two bloodlines joining. However, Caroline is human… Mikael would want revenge against her and the child. They will always have to be protected and there is one thing Mikael fears more than anything…"
Caroline feel Klaus shift uncomfortably beside her before he spoke "A pack of werewolves…" She watched Bonnie nod her head confirming what Klaus had said. Elijah stood up and straightened his doublet, "If this is true… we know what we must do Niklaus."
Caroline felt the fear running down her spine as Elijah made his way across the room and in front of Klaus. She placed her hands up in surrender and begged for her life, "Elijah… please don't hurt me." Klaus turned towards her and she could see the sadness lingering in his eyes. "He's not going to hurt you, love."
She listened as Elijah scoffed at her remark. "Miss Forbes, I would never hurt you. My brother knows what we must do in regards of keeping you safe." Elijah hesitated a moment before glancing up at Klaus. All she could do was look back and forth between the brothers, wondering what they had in store for her.
She watched Klaus shift back and forth before he turned around towards her. He stepped closer and Caroline closed her eyes at the heat of his hands touching her face. He lifted her head up and his eyes met hers. The emotions behind his eyes were enough to tell her he was hurt. She stared up at him until he spoke, "He wants to send you to live with the wolves."
Caroline could feel the tears behind her eyes. She didn't want to leave, not now. She had to fight, if she didn't then what was the purpose of living. "If I leave, Mikael wins…" She hoarsely whispered as the tears slid down her face. She felt Klaus' thumb rub against her face and she cried harder at his next words. "If you stay, then you will be killed."
She knew deep down in her heart that what Klaus was speaking was the truth. There was only so much that Klaus and Elijah could do to keep her safe. Earlier she had wanted to die, but now she felt like she had every reason to live. She listened as Bonnie cleared her throat and spoke, "If you became a pack member, it would easy for you to have a child with a wolf and the curse would be broken. You would be safe and Mikael would never come after you again."
Caroline didn't know whether to feel relieved at her words or troubled. She doubt it would ever be that easy but there was also that chance that she could live, just not as she wanted. "I will do whatever you want me to." She looked up at Klaus but he didn't look back at her.
She jump back when he furiously stepped away from her and stomped to the door. "Klaus…" Caroline yelled, but he had already slammed the door and left. The pain in her heart was so intense she thought she was be sick, and she didn't know what to do. She needed him.
"I apologize for my brother's behavior. He tends to let his affections get in the way of your well-being." She didn't raise her head to meet Elijah, instead she felt the sobs racking through her body. She didn't know when but somehow Bonnie's arms had come to wrap around her.
"Caroline, it's going to be ok. I promise. At the end of this you will have everything you want." Caroline looked up at Bonnie, "Bonnie… it will never be ok." She felt Bonnie wiping away her tears. She heard the door open and close, Elijah had left but she didn't care at that moment.
"Listen to me before the cloaking spell wears off. Go find Klaus. He's in the stables, you must talk to him." She felt Bonnie's arms drop from around her shoulders and Bonnie nod her head, "Go Caroline." She blinked a few times before rubbing her eyes and glanced back at Bonnie who gave her a sad smile.
Caroline made her way out the door and out of the mansion towards the stable. She didn't know why but she felt as if she was being drawn there. She pushed open the door and entered as loudly as she could. For some reason she wanted him to know that she was there. Klaus was standing at Kasimira's stable, and somehow she knew she would find him there.
"Caroline… I wish she be alone right now. Please." Klaus mumbled as he petted the horse. Caroline didn't know where the courage had come from but she walked forward until she reached his side. When he didn't turn to acknowledge her, she reached up with one hand and turned his face towards her.
When he didn't look at her she sighed, "Klaus please, look at me." She watched him close his eyes for a moment. What she didn't expect was his hand reaching behind her neck and pulling her into him. The way he held her, it was almost as if she was comforting him.
"I don't want you to go…" Caroline's eyes went wide at his words. "You just returned… I just can't let you go." She could feel her heart pound in her chest and knew Klaus could hear it too. She could feel his arms tighten around her when she tried to pull back.
"Not yet, just let me hold you. I need this." Caroline closed her eyes and he continued to hold her. Time passed by slowly, but his grip never loosened. Finally she felt him move and pull back slowly, he was so close she could feel the scruff of his face scratch against hers.
Caroline's body went stiff as she felt his lips gently press against her cheek. She had waited so patiently for years for a moment like this. She felt Klaus' hands on her hips and his breath close to the corner of her mouth. Caroline didn't know what the outcome of the situation would be but all logic went out of her mind as she wrapped her hand around Klaus' neck pulling him down to her and placing her lips on his.
