Chapter 9-
"Kids, the food's ready!"
Oh thank god!
Antonio would not stop staring at me and I was about to just punch him in the face. I hope dinner won't be as awkward.
-In the Kitchen-
"I did it! I made the soccer team!"
"Oh good job mijo!"
"That's my boy."
"Ugh, that Kirkland boy tried talking to me again."
"Where's 'Tonio?"
"Ah probably watching por-"
"Alvarez!"
So many different voices filled the house, it seems like ten people do live here.
A scent also lingered around the air, a spicy scent. My mouth is growing watery as Antonio and I make our way to the kitchen. We enter the room and I see a family. A family that is getting ready for dinner, something I have only seen on television.
Antonio approaches a man who is sitting at the head of the table. The man, exact replica of Antonio; brown wavy hair, green eyes, and olive skin.
"Hola Papa."
"Oh Antonio, hola." The man's green eyes spot me standing at the doorway. "Hello there. Who may you be?"
"Jesus, this is Lovino Vargas." Mrs. Carriedo chuckles as she places a large bowl full of white race on the table.
"Lovino Vargas!" Jesus beams.
Jeez Antonio, just how much have you talked about me?
"Welcome to my home." He extends his arm out.
I walk up to Antonio's dad and shake his hand, a grin on my face. "Pleasure to meet you Mr. Carriedo."
"Sit my boy!" He motions for me to sit. "And call me Jesus."
I nod and take a seat on the chair beside Antonio, a girl across from me.
The girl, who looks older than Antonio flashes me a perfect set of white teeth. "You're not what I expected."
I ignore her comment and take a look around the table.
Jesus sits at the end of the table, Alvarez to his right, and Antonio to his left. Next to Alvarez is the chick who spoke to me, another younger girl, a boy with black hair, and little Diana. To my right sits two other boys, and I'm guessing Mrs. Carriedo on the other end.
"Do you like enchiladas Lovino?"
Mrs. Carriedo stood behind me and I turn my head upwards to face her. She's holding a plate in her hands and I can see the enchiladas resting together.
"Y-yes."
"Bueno. I made you three, is that alright?" She places the plate before me and my eyes light up. The enchiladas are dipped in a red chili sauce, with powered cheese inside, and a mouth watering aroma.
"Yeah Mrs. Carriedo, thanks."
And so with my fork I cut a piece of the enchilada, then take a bite.
Oh dio, it tastes so delicious! It may be a bit spicy but still amazing.
"How is it Lovino?" Antonio is also starting on his food.
Nodding my head and swallowing the food I say, "Great. This really is amazing Mrs. Carriedo."
"I'm glad you like it. If you want more just ask, don't be shy mijo." She smiles, which made my stomach feel funny.
-After An Enchilada or Two-
"So you're from Italia?" Asks the boy with black hair, also tied up in a ponytail.
"Yep, South Italy to be exact."
"Is there a difference?" Girl with perfect smile questions.
"Big difference," I reply. "South Italy, the lower part of the "boot"," with my index and middle fingers I use air quotes on the word boot. "Is full of farmers, fishermen, and the mafia."
Okay maybe that last part wasn't the best thing to say.
Ten pairs of eyes were staring at me, lost for words.
Way to go Lovino, you just made your home country lose tourist next summer.
"The mafia?" Mrs. Carriedo tilts her head to the side, a frown on her face.
"Yes, there are mafia gangs in the Southern part of Italy. Although, it is nothing like the movies!"
Everyone's saucer eyes slowly go back to their normal size.
"In the movies the mafia usually run the city, with henchmen on every corner or something like that. Well that's fake. The mafia only do their business at night, never involving the city or the people. So in reality, even with a gang in town you live in peace, unless you're looking for a fight."
"Isn't it scary though?" The little girl beside the boy with the ponytail asks. "Those are bad guys!"
"Like I said, unless you're looking for a fight then you'll be fine."
Antonio's mom places a hand on her chest, "Oh Lovino, you lived your whole life there?"
I take a sip of my drink, orange juice. "Not really. You see I was born in Naples, which is in Southern Italy. My younger brother was born in Rome, Northern Italy, and my other brother was born in Seborga."
"Seborga?" Jesus asks. "Isn't that a micro nation on the boarder of France?"
"Yes it is," I answer. "My parents vacationed there and my mother's water broke on their trip."
A chuckle erupts from Mr. and Mrs. Carriedo. "Reminds me of Antonio and our vacation in España!"
"Papa!" Antonio cries out, snapping at his dad. "A'ma!" His head darts from his dad to his mom, eyes widen in shock.
"Oh Antonio, calmarse." Mrs. Carriedo chuckles once again.
Heh, Antonio's parents sure do like embarrassing him.
"Lovino! Your name is Lovino, right?" Antonio's younger sister pipes up, her hazel eyes glowing brightly.
"Si," I answer. "And you are?"
"I'm Genesis! Well, Lovi, I'm going to call you that okay!"
"Genesis don't be rude. That is not Lovino's name."
"It's alright Mrs. Carriedo," I say. Genesis' face lights up as I accept the nickname. "I don't mind, really."
Genesis continues, "Okay so since you're from Italy that means you speak Italian. Can you teach me Italian?" Her overly large, black, square glasses slide down to the bridge of her nose.
Laughter rings in the air as it escapes from everyone, including myself.
Genesis' expression appears hurt so I stop laughing and clear my throat. "Of course I'll teach you Italian." Everyone is paying attention again. "For instance, you are a bella bambina. Tutte le donne sono belle Carriedo."
"What does that mean Lovi?" Genesis squeals.
"Yeah Lovi, what does it mean?" Antonio laughs, that fucker.
With a smile on my face, I stomp my foot on Antonio's. His face twists in pain, trying to hold back a yelp. That's what he gets for calling me Lovi!
"Well Genesis, 'bella' means beautiful and 'bambina' means child." She nods vigorously, never taking her eyes off mine. "And the last sentence I said means, "All the Carriedo women are beautiful."
Mrs. Carriedo, the older sister, and Genesis all wore the similar expression; flattered, with a deep red blush.
"Antonio," the older sister with green eyes says. "You should bring Lovino over more often."
Oh.
"Yeah 'Tonio, I like him!" The boy beside me replies with a cheesy smile.
Literally, he has cheese all over his mouth.
"Si, si! Can Lovi come over tomorrow?"
These people... They actually want me back? Antonio's family likes me? Why? All I did was compliment the ladies/ girls.
"Of course he can!" Jesus roars with amusement. "From now on we'll have an extra chair just for Lovino!"
My face feels hot, and my hands are becoming clammy.
I glance at Antonio and see him staring at me. Our eyes meet, hazel against green, and the only thing I can do is manage a weak smile.
Why the hell am I staring at him!? Dammit Lovino, look away!
"Hey Lovino come play cars with us!"
And that's when my eyes finally pull away from Antonio's magical orbs.
"Yeah! Play cars 'Vino, play cars!"
The two younger brothers beside me clap their hands in unions.
Mrs. Carriedo snaps her fingers at her sons with a frown on her face. "Niños, don't bother Lovino like that. He probably has to get going."
"Mrs. Carriedo," I begin. "Don't worry, I can stay a few extra minutes to play."
"Really?" One of the younger boys beams. He scoots away from the table and jumps out of his seat, running out of the kitchen.
"Salvador, ten cuidado." Jesus barks at his son even though Salvador didn't seem to hear.
"Cristobal, come on and help me set up the race track!"
Cristobal, the youngest brother, blinks his light brown eyes and climbs out of his chair.
"We'll be in the living room!" Salvador shout from the room over.
Antonio chuckles beside me, picking up my empty plate and placing it on top of his own. Alvarez and the rest of the Carriedo siblings all have their green eyes on me.
This family has some serious staring problems...
"Hey Camila, I'm going to use your car again to drive Lovino home." Antonio pipes up, stretching his arms and cracking his neck.
"No way punk!" Camila, who's the older sister, scoffs across the table. "You drove my car to and from school without my permission. Do you pay for the gas? I think not."
Whoa.
"Camila calm down." Jesus tells his daughter while giving her a stern look. He then turns to Antonio and I with a smile. "I'll drive Lovino home."
I nod my head, "Thank you Mr. Carriedo. Now excuse me, I'll go with the boys now."
And so I stand up from my seat, as does Antonio, and begin to head out the kitchen.
"Antonio, come here hijo."
Both Antonio and I stop walking. We turn to Jesus, who remains seated at the table, a worry expression flooding his eyes. Antonio gives me an apologetic smile but I shoo him off and leave the room.
-In the Living Room-
"Lovino! Lovino! Here be the red car!"
A miniature, red Convertible is shoved into my hands as I sit down on the floor. Salvador and Cristobal are staring up at me with grins. "Okay then," I reply. "Nice race track." It's simple really. Blocks and Lego pieces make up the sides of the track while a small, black flag awaits at the finish line.
Cristobal is waiting at the start line, his blue Hummer ready in position. Salvador joins him, a black Mercedes in his hand and a sly grin on his lips.
"Alright boys, don't go crying to your mommy when I beat you."
"Ha!" Salvador snorts. "You'll be blubbering like a baby to your mommy and daddy when I win!"
My face grows blank, all previous emotions I had melt away. My eyes stare at the boy who had no idea what he just said. I want to punch a wall, anything!
Salvador isn't the one to blame, he doesn't know. And yet, his words feel like ice being shoved down my back. Cold and burning. His words hurt so much, I want to cry-
"Lovino?"
I blink, looking away from Salvador, swallowing unspoken words that almost escaped.
Light brown eyes are goggling up at me, a pout settled onto that olive face. Cristobal saved me from tears.
"Right," I say. "Let's race!"

"Genesis really adored you," Jesus chuckles. "I think all the kids did."
I still don't understand why.
Why does this family like me? I didn't do anything special.
"Invite your folks over Lovino."
"Dad, Lovino lives with his grandfather."
"Oh, my mistake."
"It's alright Mr. Carriedo."
And Antonio...
Why is he looking at me? Sure, I may be staring out the window, but from the corner of my eye I can see him. At least he's not smiling.
Actually, I haven't seen Antonio smile ever since he came back from talking with his dad. Did something happen between them?
Whatever, I don't care what happened with the two of them.
"Lovino, we're here."
"Oh uh, thanks for the ride Mr. Carriedo." I say as I unbuckle my seat belt.
"Anytime Lovino. Stop by the house whenever you like."
I respond with a simple nod and exit the car.
"Adios Lovi!" Antonio waves as he watches me walk towards the front door. He has his smile back on.
I wave back, a weird feeling stuck inside of me.
So I enter the house, drop my backpack on a nearby couch, and go straight to my room.
Nonno throws me numerous questions, but I ignore each one.
One thought remains in my mind.
I just came back from Antonio's house.
I'm friends with Antonio...
Ugh!
