Chapter 12-

7:48, and they're still here.

Come on, leave already! He'll be here in a few minutes.

All I need is ten minutes.

"You sure you don't want to go Lovino? I'll buy you a ticket."

"No I'm fine, just go."

My grandfather shrugs his shoulders, "Okay then. Feli grab your coat, we're leaving!"

Feliciano comes bouncing down the stairs, dressed in a simple yet elegant black suit. "Ready!"

"Alright then. Please behave boys, I do not want to come home to utter chaos." Romeo (who got up from the couch) and I give each other sly smiles. "See you later or tomorrow, either way, good-night boys."

"Ve~ Bye, ciao!"

Nonno and Feliciano step out of the house, locking the door behind them.

Once I hear the car back out of the driveway and drive down the street I face my younger brother.

"What?" He questions.

"Romeo," I rub the back of my neck. "Look um, I am going to the dance with... a friend." This is hard to explain. "So you'll be here alone and you cannot tell Nonno."

He simply grins up at me. "It's Antonio, huh?"

I am about to yell at him for eavesdropping on my conversations, but don't. "Fucker, I don't have time for this! I'm going to go change. If Antonio comes, let him in, but don't talk to him!" Romeo flashes me a smile and I run up the stairs towards my bedroom, where my outfit await.

7:55, I can do this!

First, I go to the bathroom: brush my teeth, rinse my mouth, and comb my hair as best as I can (while avoiding that curl). I head back to my room and fling open my closet door.

"Calm the fuck down Lovino!" I mutter to myself.

Seriously, get a hold of yourself. Antonio won't care if you're running late. Or will he? Ah forget it and just change.

So I grab my olive green, button up, collar shirt and slip it on over my muscle shirt. I roll up the sleeves, just below my elbow and properly fix the collar. Walking over to the brown dresser, I rummage through one of the drawers and pick out a black tie. I begin to lace it over my neck just like Nonno taught me. Once done, I put on my gray vest and button up halfway. I slip off my sweat pants and trade them for gray slacks along with a belt. After tying the laces of my black shoes, I take a look in the mirror.

"Lovino Vargas, you are a stud."

I walk to the door and place my hand on the doorknob. "Wait a minute.."
Am I dressed okay? What if I'm under dressed? Or what if... What if Antonio looks better than me?
Do I really care about Antonio's appearance?
Of course I do! I have to look better than he does!

So one last time, I look at myself in the mirror.
"Italian Badass."
And now I leave my bedroom.

I'm walking down the stairs, one step at a tome, and I hear Romeo laugh.
I peek over the rail to see what he's laughing at, hoping it is the television.

But before I can do anything, I hear another voice. Another person joins in on the laughter.
Romeo isn't alone, and I have a 50/50 percent chance I know who he is.

"Ha, you are quite the chatter box Romeo." He chuckles.

I take another step down, hoping they do not notice me.
I continue to watch them. Romeo has not noticed me, even though he's facing my direction.

And then suddenly, Antonio stops laughing. My brother stops as well, confused about Antonio's actions.

Antonio's head slowly moves, searching for something or someone. His eyes focus on what he is looking for. He turns around, eyes still wondering. Until... Until they meet mine. "Lovino~"

I race down the stairs and stand face to face with Romeo. My index finger pokes his forehead, which pushes him back a bit. "Didn't I tell you not to talk to him!?"

Romeo crosses his arms and huffs, "I was just being a good host."

Instead of fighting with the brat, I turn my attention to Antonio, who is staring at me.
No, he isn't staring. He... He is checking me out as if I am a girl! Those green orbs trail my body up and down. I feel my grow hot, too hot.

"What? Antonio stop staring!" I cry out, hoping my face is not red.

Antonio snaps out of his daze, "Oh I'm sorry. You look um, really nice."

"Can we go now?" I ask. Romeo is watching us and has a mischievous grin on.

"Oh yeah, right. Come on then."

"Romeo, you know the rules. There's leftover pasta in the fridge. I'll be home before Nonno, and no girls over."

My brother begins to mimic me. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. Just go already."

Antonio gently grabs my wrist and pulls me towards the front door. "Nice meeting you Romeo, bye!"

"Buon divertimento facendo fuori."

"Go to sleep!"

~Outside~

"Is this your car?" This time Antonio brought over a gray, 2010 Toyota Camry.

"No, it belongs to my dad." Man, these people sure so own good looking cars.

We get in the car, buckle our seat belts and sit in silence.

"Here you go." Lifting my eyes up, I see a tomato and Antonio's face. "I brought it for you."

A tomato, he brought me a tomato.
I reach for the fruit and take it from his hand. "Thanks."

Antonio starts the car and begins to drive to the dance.

I bite the tomato in my hand, taking in the sweet flavor. Four bites and I finish the delicious fruit. So now it's quiet. The only sound is the radio playing, but the volume is low.

"I'm changing the station." Antonio says nothing, so I begin to switch the station.
There's no way I am going to listen to obnoxious Katy Perry!

98.7 f.m., my favorite radio station is playing 'Uprising' by Muse. "Ah finally, good music." I drum my fingers against the window and quietly hum along.

"This is one of your favorite bands, right?"

"Hm? Oh uh, yeah."

"I like them too." Cheers the annoying Spaniard.

A 'pfh' escapes from my lips, "Really? So what's this song called?"

"Oh no!"

I laugh out loud, "Ha, not even close! I knew you-"

Antonio mumbles to himself for a moment and then starts talking to me. "No Lovi, I'm not talking about the song." His left moves away from the steering wheel and crawls around in the inside of his blazer. "Dammit!" He gives me a sheepish smile. "Um Lovino, I... I don't have the tickets. I must of forgotten them in my room."

My hazel eyes turn into daggers. "Well you better go get them before I fucking change my mind and make you take me home!"

The bastard bounces in his seat and makes a U-turn.

-At Antonio's House-

Antonio rings the doorbell, not once, not twice, but multiple times.

The porch light flickers on and we hear someone unlock the door. A second later the door slowly creaks open.

"Antonio, ¿qué estás haciendo aquí?" Mrs. Carriedo asks.

"Oh mamá, me olvido los boletos para el baile."

"Eres un tonto hijo."

Antonio and his mom are speaking in rapid Spanish, I am just standing here, hoping a fly does not enter my mouth.

Mrs. Carriedo peers over her son's shoulder and see me. "Lovino?"

I wave and cannot help, but blush a bit. Women always make me nervous. "Ciao."

She fully opens the door to let us in and Antonio runs in, with me a few steps behind.

"It's so good to see you again."

As I step into the living room I see Antonio disappear in the hallway, hear the television blare some cartoons, and meet four pairs of familiar eyes.

"You look so handsome!" The mother of the household smiles.

"Thanks Mrs. Carriedo."

"Lovino's here?"

Instantly, three figures rise from the sofa; Luis, Salvador, and Cristobal.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Salvador greets.

Cristobal runs up to me and pats my leg. "Hi, play?"

"Um sorry, not today buddy."

Cristobal gives me a thumb down and goes back to the couch. Luis and Salvador stay standing up, smiling up at me.

"Lovino?"

I turn around towards the voice and see an awe too familiar girl. "Ciao Genesis."

The hazel-eyed girl smiles and takes baby steps towards me. "Hola! You.. you look n-nice." She whispers with a growing blush.

I bow a bit, reaching her height. "And you look beautiful."

Genesis lowers her head and avoids everyone around her.

"Genesis like Lovino!"

That's when Genesis' head shoots back up, "I do not!" She shouts at her older brothers.

Luis chuckles, gathering tears in the corner of his eyes.

"Niños, enough!"

Genesis' tongue pokes out of her mouth and she wiggles it at her brothers.

I was about to speak up when-

"Got them!"

We all turn around and see Antonio sprint back into the living room. He has two tickets in his hand.

"Now we can go." Antonio tucks the tickets in his pocket and waves me over so we can leave.

But before we left, we are stopped.

"Oh boys! Can I take a picture?" Antonio's mom holds a small, blue, digital camera in her hand.

I eye Antonio and see him roll his eyes. "A'ma no. Lovino doesn't want to take pictures."

Mrs. Carriedo loses her smile.

"Actually, I wouldn't mind."

And the smile returns.

"Si, si!" Mrs. Carriedo cheers. "Come on you two, pose."

Antonio leans in close to me, "You don't have to do this." He whispers.

"Nonsense, I love making your mother happy." I hiss with a grin.

So Antonio and I stand beside one another, shoulders touching.

"Hijo, place your arm around Lovino!"

Antonio and I glance at each other.
I shrug, not caring what he does, and so he places his arm around my shoulder. I tense a bit, but keep my pose and smile the same.

"Alright then, on the count of three." Mrs. Carriedo lifts up the camera.

Genesis, Luis, Salvador, Cristobal, and even Alvarez (who walked in) are watching us.
God, this is embarrassing. I take a deep breath and lock my eyes on the camera lens.

"Uno. Dos. Tres!"

And so the flash goes off.

I blink a few times, trying to get rid of the colors that the camera left my eyes.

Antonio removes his arm off my shoulder and I look at him. And I mean really look at him.
He has on a nice, light brown blazer with a green, formal shirt. The shirt makes his eyes stand out and fuck, I did not mean to say that! His gray trousers fit loosely around his legs and his brown shoes match his blazer. He looks...
Good, even a bit han- Ah, what the hell am I saying!?

"Gracias niños, now you can go."

We head to the door and I wave the family good-bye.

Everyone waves back and shout out mixtures of 'good night' and see 'see you another time'.

Mrs. Carriedo stands on the porch, watching us walk to the car. "Antonio please don't speed or drink and drive. I don't want the police to pull you over. If they catch you, we'll all be in trouble."

"Yeah Mom, I know what I'm doing."

I hope he does or else I won't ever talk to him again. No way will I bail him out when the cops come for him.

"Ready Lovino?" With a curt nod, we both enter the car and drive off to the dance.
