Chapter 30: Happy Times and Genius Minds
Cassidy's POV:
The winter holidays were almost finished and we still had yet to find a potion or antidote to help Spencer and I was beginning to give up hope.
"Don't worry Cassidy," she said from her bed. "We'll find something."
"Everyone keeps saying that but we aren't finding anything," I told her defeated. I was getting ready at her house for her families annual New Year's Party and sleeping over. Lily wouldn't be coming again this year because she was in France visiting family.
"We should probably start getting ready," she said getting up. "Party starts in two hours."
"Two hours?" I said confused. "That's more than enough time."
"Nope," she said shaking her head. "An hour for each. Do you want to go first?" I shook my head.
"Fine," she rolled her eyes. "I'll go first." She then went into the bathroom and began to shower. Once she was done and dried off she came back into the room. She went into her closet. She came back in a hot pink robe and black slippers.
"Ok you curl my hair," she said handing me the iron. "I'll do my make-up." I nodded and began to work on her blond hair. Once I had finished her hair and she her make-up she started to arrange her hair in a complicated up do. After that she changed and we were now down to 45 minutes.
"Oops," she said pushing me into the bathroom. "Guess I'll have to power through with you."
"Or I could just not go," I suggested as I shed my sweatpants and sweater.
"Not an option," she called from the other side of the door.
'I was afraid of that,' I thought to myself. I showered and dried my body and hair before wrapping myself into my robe and stepping out of the bathroom. Marlene set me in her vanity chair and went to work on my hair. I picked up some eyeliner but she slapped my hand.
"I've got this," she claimed as she went back to curling my hair. She curled it into large messy curls. After she was done she went to work on my face. She only put eyeliner and mascara but she put it on heavy to make it more noticeable. When she was done we were literally out of time.
"Hurry and put your dress on," she said pulling it out for me. "I'll be downstairs." She left the room and I locked the door and began to change.
My dress was a deep purple with one strap. There were rhinestones going around the neckline and up the shoulder strap. The dress was flowy and had no waist/bust line. I wore black booties and a black leather jacket with ¾ sleeves to spice up my outfit.
"Let's get this over with," I said to myself in the mirror. I exited the room and went down the stairs. Once I reached the front foyer I heard a low whistle.
"Damn Cass," Sirius said. "I'm liking the bad-ass look, it suits you."
"I know," I winked tossing my blond hair over my shoulder. The rest of the night went on uneventful. We danced, we laughed, and we had a great time.
It felt good to be happy for a change.
The last few days of the winter holiday went without change. Spencer didn't get better and we found no cure. We went back to Hogwarts and continued our search but no luck. We only had two weeks left until they were going to give the Death-Cap Draught to my brother.
"What are we going to do?" I whined. "I can't let Ellie win, I have to find a way."
"Don't worry Cassidy," Remus assured me. "We'll find something." He then started to pack up his things.
"Where are you going?" I whined. "You're supposed to be helping me!"
"Sorry I've got a prefects meeting in a little while," he apologized. And with that he scurried away so he wouldn't have to face anymore of my wrath. I groaned and my face slammed down onto the potions book in front of me. I had checked a whole bunch out to see if there had been any that could help me. So far no luck.
"Need any help?"
I looked up and gave a tired smile at the figure above me.
"Hi Andrew," I greeted. "I'm fine, just looking for a non-existent antidote."
"Why look if it's non-existent?" he questioned.
"I was making a joke," I sigh. "Guess I'm no good at that anymore."
"What are you actually looking for?" he asked sitting down at the table. "Maybe I could help."
"I doubt it, but it's worth a shot," I said handing him a book I've yet to look through. "I'm looking for an antidote or a potion or something that will help save my brother. He was given some unknown potion and they can't find a cure for it." I also explained my Ellie and Peter theory to him.
"Why are you looking, shouldn't you leave that to the professionals?" he pointed out.
"I can't lose him Andrew," I whispered. "He's the only family I have left."
"Well I'm sure we can find something," he said more optimistic this time. I smiled and thanked him.
"What are the symptoms he's suffering from," he asked an hour later. "Maybe we can look for potions that cause that or an antidote to cure it."
"Tried that," I told him. "Hasn't worked so far. But he's having seizures, vomiting, and as of a couple of days ago he's begun to bleed internally."
"Ok we just look for potions that cause that," he said. I nodded and went back to searching. Sirius chose this moment to come into the library to help as well.
"What's he doing here?" he whispered loudly pointing at Andrew. "I thought you two broke it off."
"We did," Andrew whispered loud enough for us both to here. "There's this thing called friendship. It's pretty nice."
"Oh," he said quietly. "Well then like the saying goes 'the friend of my friend is my friend'!" he exclaimed earning a shushing from Madam Pince.
"Actually Sirius," I said laughing. "It's 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'."
"Oh," he said looking defeated. "I mean I was close." I laughed and shook my head. I went back to looking but the words stuck in my head.
"'The enemy…of my enemy…is my friend.'" I recited quietly. Then it hit me.
"Oh my god," I exclaimed. "Sirius that's brilliant!"
"What's brilliant?" he asked confused.
"'The enemy of my enemy is my friend.'" I recited once more. "Don't you get it?" Both boys shook their head and I rolled my eyes.
"We have no idea what that she-devil gave my brother. We need inside information," I explained. "I mean obviously we can't ask Ellie. We have to ask whoever helped her."
"Peter?" Sirius asked. I shook my head.
"We can't go to Peter," I said shooting the idea down. "I doubt Ellie even told him all the information so he would be zero help. Plus Peter's probably to loyal to her he would just go back and tell her we were looking. Then she'd do something more than poison my brother and I can't gamble with his life like that. We need someone else, someone who would deceive her at the first chance."
"Who else would be helping her?" Andrew asked.
"A Slytherin most likely," I told them. "They'd have to be someone who knows potions pretty well. Probably someone who could make it and be discrete. Definitely someone who would throw her under the bus if need be." I then saw a familiar head of black hair pass by the library which struck a light bulb.
"And I know just the person,"
Any ideas? Make sure you leave them in your reviews, because you're going to review...right?
