Kyle had learnt many things during his restless night in the castle, too many perhaps, for example, he learnt that the water rushing down the dungeon steps would automatically turn off at 1am or that the boiler started humming to life at 4am or even that James would sneak back into the castle at 6am prepare for his mentoring. So it was at 6:02 that Kyle decided to go down stairs and… do something.
He started to silently tap his toes on the first step making sure that no creaking sound was come out of it. He then slowly put the remainder of his foot on the step. He was about to follow through the same plan with his second when it hit him that there was no one to be quiet for. Kyle quickened the pace and without acknowledging it was clambering down the steps at high speed.
He almost fell down the steps due to an unexpected stop. James was blocking his way and looking at the young Jr defender curiously. Everyone knew that the Jr defenders didn't get up until after 8am which was why Kyle was expecting to be shouted at- probably for being in the way.
"I know this is hard for you, but change is good." James told him, "We need to let go of the past and accept that things will be different in the future. Not everything will stay the same and we have to adapt whether we like it or not."
"Change is hard to accept if you have no idea what's going on to begin with." Kyle replied.
"I realise that. Why don't you text your friends?" James suggested, "You all exchanged numbers last night."
"Oh yeah, I'm sure they're all up now having breakfast." Kyle replied back very sarcastically.
"I didn't say they would reply." James said back as he walked past Kyle, who paused for a second before reaching into the borrowed hoodies pocket and grabbing his phone and sending a joint text to his friends.
Hey, wuu2. Kyle
He was sure he used the right text speech. It was all fairly new to him because, as you can imagine, having Faetal for a mother, slang was a sin. Kyle put his phone back into the hoodie pocket and continued making his way down the stairs wishing that there was at least a lift. When he got to the bottom, he heard a slight vibrating noise coming from the pocket. Surprised, Kyle grabbed it to see if it was a text of just indeed a notification.
"No way." Kyle exclaimed in surprise.
Hey Ky, just got up. Got gymnastics in a hr. Still on for training? Zoey.
Yeah, training on. Srsly, u do gym this early? Kyle
Yeah! Only time I hve practice. Z
Right. C u later. K
After that quick texting session at the bottom of the stairs, Kyle put his phone back into the pocket and jumped into the sofa to see if morning TV was as bad as people claimed it was. He grabbed for the TV remote and flicked through the never ending list of useless channels showing absolute rubbish.
He heard James move around the castle gathering supplies for what was going to be a horrible training session full with slime and tennis balls- what his parents would call target practice. He then glanced down to the obscure object that James had accidently left. It was a black, dirty bucket filled with unslimed tennis balls. He bounced back off the sofa and took one of the tennis balls.
20 minutes later Kyle was still bouncing the ball up and grabbing it with his hand. He repeated the action again and again while watching Nick and the rubbish cartoons that were on at this time. The only one he slightly liked was Generation Rex but only because he could compare to the saving the world part.
A familiar doorbell sound travelled through his ears causing the ball to fall to the ground with a large thump which rolled underneath the sofa. He could hear James coming up from the basement and walking through the doors. Who on earth would be ringing the doorbell at this time in the morning? Whoever it was James was having a long conversation with them.
"Kyle!" James shouted through the castle.
"What?" Kyle shouted back, "If you think I'm doing training then think – oh hey Zoey, what are you doing here?"
"Come to see you silly. My gym training was cancelled, teacher sick or something so I came to see you as you're up." She explained, "I didn't think green and black were your colours?"
Kyle looked at hr confused before he realised that he was indeed still wearing the hoodie and trackies where as she was wearing a pink vest top, with a beige jacket and some jeans, "I'll just get changed. 10 mins max. Why don't you sit down and watch…whatever that is."
He ran up the stairs and left Zoey alone to snoop around, not that she meant to, she was just…curious about the people she met and wanted to know them. She had a quick overview of the living room. It was so neat and tidy, if a stranger came and looked in, they would assume that not a single child would live here- then again, James stayed here and so did the Jr defenders parents (which she would love to meet) stayed here until the conference.
The TV was still blaring whatever kids show was on at that moment as she was curiously picking up random objects like a sculpture of a birds nest, (okay, she really wanted to meet these defenders after Kyle told her about them last night), and an very old edition of Alchemist Weekly lying on top of a Doctor Who magazine. Zoey smiled, these people were definitely interesting but her mum always told her interesting friends are the best friends. She then turned her attention to an untouched book.
"Gildar Graphum. A Vikings story?" She questioned as she opened the hard cover and read the opening sentence.
It all started back when I was a cute and adorable six year old having attention pushed in my face.
Zoey couldn't help but laugh at the green ink that some had scribbled on, pointing at the word pushed, and saying yeah right. Anyway she continued.
My brothers were sat in the corner being anti-social. They found it cool which is what made me different- an attention seeking muppet.
The last bit was written in blue ink this time so she flicked through the pages and saw that little annotations of mostly blue and green ink was there along with a little red. Zoey skipped the paragraphs and turned her attention to the annotations, laughing at each one.
"I think that was the first activity Kook and Thorne enjoyed doing together." Kyle said from the top of the stairs now wearing a yellow t-shirt with strips down the sleeve and an old pair of jeans.
Zoey nodded as she remembered the colour coding theme all the Jr defenders had. For some strange reason they all loved the idea of wearing their colours hence the pink vest top. She placed the book down and sat on the sofa next to Kyle.
"When are your parents coming home?" She asked him, while on the topic of the defenders.
"Umm, I'm not sure." He responded, "August, next year."
"Next year!" Zoey exclaimed, "Aren't they coming home because of…"
She really didn't know of Kyle was okayish with recent events so after her and the others left the castle, they all made a pack not to say their processors names. Luckily he caught on.
"It's complicated, like very complicated so James said he'd sorted it." Kyle explained, "I not sure he told them the truth, I recon he hasn't but he's probably adjusted it."
"Slightly harsh though. I mean there kids are-." Maybe this was the wrong topic to start.
"It's just really complicated." Kyle explained, "Like really not eve I'm sure what happened completely."
"Weren't you there?" Zoey asked.
"No this was before I arrived at the castle. I've only been here 9 months."
Zoey was about to ask another question but the doorbell interrupted them. The pair could hear James storm up the stairs, muttering to himself about it being Piccadilly Circus and that it was only 6:55am. Zoey was trying not to laugh as she would figure that James would hear. She turned to Kyle who was tucking his lips in trying to stop laughing himself.
"Yeah, yeah, I will. Don't worry James." Another familiar voice said making his way to the living room, "What's up guys?"
"Drake!" Kyle exclaimed, "What are you doing here?"
"Lovely welcome as always." Drake answered, "I was up and read your text so decided to visit and I might have missed breakfast…"
"Yeah okay, I'll make some soon." Kyle caught on.
"Brill. So what you two talking about?" Drake asked as he sat crossed legged on the floor.
"Nothing important." Amy replied, "I'm surprised you're up early. You don't seem like an early bird."
While Drake made a little speech about assumptions and how he was actually very different to what people thought he would be like, Kyle eyes were slowly shutting. He tried to focus on what Drake was saying and how he tried to persuade Zoey to agree with him. The last thing he heard was I'm actually quite normal.
Kyle eyes flicked open. He found himself huddled in the sofa corner covered in a blanket. He looked opposite at where Zoey was last located but she wasn't there. His eyes darted towards the floor where Drake had been sitting. He was nowhere to be seen either. What if something bad had happened to them? What if there was an attack and he was too tired to save them? What if…
"Hey Kyle."
Kyle looked up at the door to see Amy standing there in a light blue t-shirt with white denim shorts. She smiled as she walked over, "Had a nice nap?"
"Yeah, what time is it?" Kyle asked trying to locate the clock before realising that something had broken it.
"Just after 8." She explained.
"You're early for training." Kyle replied back, that was the best thing he could come up with.
"Once you fell asleep, Drake called me to come over assuming I was awake as well. Luckily for him I was so he asked me to bring Josh and he said that you offered to make breakfast." She explained.
"When did this happen?"
"About half an hour ago. Drake hasn't stopped complaining since." Amy told him, "He's driving everyone nuts."
"You should have woken me." Kyle replied.
"Apparently you looked very tired so Zoey and Drake left you."
Kyle nodded as he whipped off the blanket and made his way to the kitchen. He could hear Drake complaining from the control room about how hungry he was. He could also hear Josh trying to make him shut up and wait. Just as Kyle was about to enter the kitchen followed by Amy, alarms started ringing.
"What's that?" Josh asked poking his head out of the door.
"I think that means robosaurs are in the town. We have to go now!" Kyle instructed.
"But I'm hungry!" Drake exclaimed.
"Drake now!" Amy shouted causing him to run out of the kitchen towards his team mates.
By the time they had gotten to the town centre, it was deserted. Assumingly everyone had run away screaming. The robosaurs were destroying everything in an attempt to lure the defenders out. Of course it has succeeded, there job was to protect Pearl Canyon.
"So, how do we activate our powers?" Josh asked realising that they never really covered the basics.
"Place the dino DNA into the activator thingy on your wrists and say the name of your dinosaur." Kyle instructed, "Just follow me. It's Dino Time"
Kyle placed his yellow DNA tube into the activator.
"Raptorex!"
With a yellow flash he was ready. The others placed their DNA into their tubes while trying to remember which dinosaurs they were.
"Pterodactyl!"
"Triceratops!"
"Vulcanodon!"
"Tyrannosaurs!"
Before the new Dino defenders looked at their new outfits, Kyle called them over as he had already started fighting. Zoey, using her gymnastics skills, cartwheeled over to the robosaurs and cautiously kicked them. Realising the power of her new powers, she kicked the adjacent one harder causing it to fall onto the ground and malfunctioning.
Josh picked up a football, probably left from a running child. He smiled underneath his helmet and kicked the ball directly into the oncoming robosaurs chest. While distracted, he kicked the robosaur to the ground and moved on to the next one.
Amy ducked from the swinging arm of her opponent. She then jumped to the fall and knocked the robosaur over using her leg. She then jumped back up to punch the robosaur, which was sneaking up from behind her, causing it to fall to the ground as well. She then ran over to stop more robosaurs from damaging the town.
Drake was teasing and making fun of the robosaurs by mostly standing around and acting completely bored while punching the robosaurs in the face. Secondly, he flipped over to a bench before sitting down and dodging various attacks. However when more robosaurs appeared to test his antics, he started fighting properly by kicking the robosaurs away causing them to retreat.
"Kyle." James called through using the communicator on the DNA activator, "I was going to give you this in training but I thought now would be a good time. I'm sending it through now."
Suddenly a peculiar object appeared a Kyle's feet. Cautiously he picked it and inspected it.
"It's called the Dino Canon. Imaginative I know. It requires one of your DNA tubes to activate it and shoot down the enemy." James informed.
"Won't that cause a power down?" Kyle asked.
"Your outfits should last for at least two minutes with the DNA due to energy storage. After the two minutes, the DNA must be inserted into the activator."
Kyle took his Dino DNA out of the activator and pressed it into the designated slot. He saw a yellow flash of light zoom from the holder of the mini canon to the end of the canon. He aimed them at the robosaurs currently attacking his friends. Luckily, they were all together as they had regrouped during his little talking session with James.
"Guys, move out of the way!" Kyle shouted.
The other dino defenders jumped and cartwheeled out of the way allowing Kyle to take aim. He pressed down the button and a large yellow energy ball hurdled out the unsuspecting robosaurs. They broke down into tiny mechanical pieces within an instant. The new dino defenders powered down and ran over to Kyle who still had the Dino Canon in his hand. He smiled at his over excited friends over winning their first battle. He smiled back and his mind referred back to what James said about moving on. Times had changed and maybe they weren't as bad as he expected them to be.
