A/N: Merry Christmas everyone and a very Happy New Year to you all. So sorry this has taken so long, I could make a lot of excuses but in reality I just got really busy and had no desire to write over the holiday. Of course, the holiday isn't over just yet, but with everyone in the house suffering from a plague (that's just what I'm calling it) I am trying to avoid being in the same rooms as people so that I don't get sick as well – this leads me to being productive today.
So please enjoy this humble offering and there will be more soon. I promise.
Chapter 5: Undesirables
Kono and Doris moved quickly through the office building and down to the lobby which was packed with people coming to visit the historical building as it had just opened its doors to the public that morning. Kono was cautious as she moved - there was suspicion in her looks as she turned and moved off down another unfamiliar hallway – unfamiliar to Doris, but perfectly familiar to the seasoned Kono Kalakaua.
"Where are we going?" Doris asked as she walked at a quick pace to keep up with Kono.
"The HPD precinct is just down the street." Kono stated as she slipped into a stair well, moved down one platform, and hid in the darkness of the next level down.
"What are you doing?" Doris asked as she slipped into the shadows with Kono and pressed her back against the cold cinderblock wall.
"I have a bad feeling, like we're being watched already." Kono whispered and heard the door just above them open and it sounded like two people entered the stairwell.
There was silence for a long moment and then movement. Doris darted forward down the stairs and leaned her weight into the next set of doors. Kono braced herself as she heard the movement from above and then two men dress more like business men rather than tourists or cops appeared to be coming right at her.
Kono reacted with a round house kick knocking one man into the banister and sending the second man running down the stairs. The first man, though stunned, came at Kono again with a shaky step but an angry look. He produced a syringe from inside his suit jacket and lunged at Kono.
Reacting to the weapon, Kono blocked the attack, grabbed the man's hand and bent it at an unbending angle. The man cried out in pain. Kono wrapped her arm around the man's neck and squeezed. He struggled against her grip but slowly he lost consciousness and fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, Doris waited just on the other side of the basement door as the second man rushed past her in a panic. She tripped him, sending him to the floor in a wild panic as he scrambled to get away, but she pounced, landed on his back and slammed his head against the concrete floor.
"Doris!" Kono called once she'd subdued her attacker.
"I'm here," Doris called as Kono came running around the corner. "What should we do with these two?" she asked.
"There's a holding cell down here." Kono responded. "We still have to get to Governor Denning."
"All right, but we'd better frisk these two first." Doris stated.
"Mine had a syringe that he tried to use as a weapon, so be careful. I'll go back for mine." Kono explained. "He's handcuffed and out cold but that won't last long."
"Good." Doris stated - she'd been scanning her surroundings for the last few minutes and jumped up when she spotted a utility workers cart in a far corner.
"What are you looking for?" Kono asked as she came back into the basement dragging the unconscious man behind her.
"Pliers," Doris stated, pulled a pair of needle nose pliers from the cart and rushed to her unconscious man. "Where is this interrogation room?" Doris asked as Kono watched her with suspicion.
"Just down here," Kono answered and headed for the cover and seclusion of the Five-O interrogation cell.
Once in the interrogation room Doris started to rip at her man's clothing - pulling at coat seams ad belt buckles until finally she located a transmitter and a pair of what looked like oversized flash drives. She also found a second syringe on this man as well. She through the transmitter at Kono's feet and watched as the young woman stomped on it with the heavy boots she'd been wearing. Then Doris leaned heavily on the man's chin until his mouth opened.
"Just as I suspected," Doris stated triumphantly.
"What are you doing?" Kono gasped as her suspect began to stir.
"Old spy trick - oldest in the book," Doris stated with a shake of her head and looked into the man's mouth before diving in with the pliers and pulling out one of the man's back molars.
"What in God's name are you doing?" Kono practically shrieked.
"It's so he can't kill himself when he comes too!" Doris stated and then jumped on the second suspect and proceeded to do the same to him. "It's not actually his tooth. There is an arsenic tablet in that molar." She explained and held out the pliers with the second molar for Kono to see.
As disgusting as it was, Kono nodded her understanding as she eyes the tooth with distain. "We'll have to get those and these syringes to the crime lab - at some point. And now I see where Steve get's all his savy from."
Doris smiled.
"All right, now that we've violated these two men, what are we going to do with them?" Doris asked. "How did you know they were after us anyway?"
"I didn't," Kono confessed. "They looked out of place in the lobby - kind of like Danny used to look when he first came here. I heard his voice in the back of my head and that's when I decided on the back way out. I didn't know if they would follow me or not, but I guess my instinct was right. We'll take the back exit now and move down the street to HPD where we will call back to Chin and Toast. For now, we'll lock these guys up here and question them later."
"We could be in so much trouble for this." Doris sighed as she helped Kono lift the men into chairs in the interrogation room and handcuff them to the sturdy metal structures that were bolted to the floor.
The two women then moved on through the basement level and out the back exit.

"Kono what are you doing here?" Duke Lukela asked as Kono and Doris moved quickly through the HPD precinct.
"We need to use your phone and a cruiser!" Kono stated by way of an answer as she dove for a landline.
Duke stared at the two women before him.
"Duke, you've got to be so careful," Kono whispered. "Gladys McMahon has taken Danny and Steve."
"Is that why the crime lab is swamped out at the McGarrett house?"
"Yes," Doris and Kono answered together.
"Would you mind taking some men and going to check on Chin?" Kono asked as she dialed her office number a second time and waited as she got a busy signal. "We had a little trouble getting out of the office this morning, and I'm worried that Chin and Toast may be in danger."
"Sure, I can do that," Duke answered.
"Awesome!" Kono stated and dialed her cousin's number this time.
"That was quick," Chin stated into the phone as he answered his cell. "Toast only just finished sweeping our phones. Why are you calling from the precinct?" he asked. "Things have been smooth sailing here."
"We ran into a little trouble trying to get out of the office. Two men were on their way up to the office - I'm assuming. They saw me and Doris, and they are now locked up in the basement with some evidence that you might want to have Toast and the crime lab take a look at. You also might want some professional to take a look at our vehicles - I'm not taking any chances. Doris and I are going to take a cruiser from Duke to the Governor's mansion and then we'll be back with you. Stay safe, Cuz, and be on high alert. Also, Duke's gonna come by with some of his friends to keep you company."
"Got it. You get us the back-up we need and fill in the big boss. I'll hold down the fort." Chin stated and ended the call.
"Please keep an eye out for my cousin, Duke. This is messed up enough already." Kono stated as Duke handed her a set of keys. "And you might want to get Grover involved."
"Take cruiser 14," Duke stated with a nod and watched as Doris and Kono ducked out of the precinct again. "Get someone on verifying that the Five-O vehicles are safe and pool as many people as you can to watch their backs." Duke ordered to the few men that had gathered around him and they nodded as he spoke. "Get the bomb squad and SWAT on standby. Gladys McMahon is back on our island."

Duke arrived at the same time that Catherine walked into the office.
"Chin, what in God's name is going on? What happened?" Catherine asked frantically. "Steve isn't answering any of my calls, and the crime lab won't let me anywhere near the house."
"We have evidence that Danny and Steve were taken last night from Steve's house by Gladys McMahon." Chin answered.
"Both of them?" Catherine asked in shock. "Who is watching Grace?" She asked when she was able to catch her breath.
"Grace is on the mainland with her mother and step father." Toast stated. "They are on high alert already and have an LVPD guard. It was one of the first things we checked into."
"And yes, Gladys has both of them." Chin added once it was established that the children were safe. "She has threatened the rest of us as well. Kono and Doris were attacked on their way out of the building this morning and the men are down stairs awaiting interrogation."
"I'll send two of my men down there to stand guard." Duke stated and with a wave of his hand two HPD officers left the Five-O office.
"I'll stay here with Toast. You go and get answers." Catherine said with much determination and a flash of anger.
"All right," Chin stated and then added. "You call Lori on the mainland and get her on the first flight to Hawaii but don't use your phone. Give that to Toast to make sure it's not compromised. Used a land line, they are clear."
Catherine nodded
"I'll back you up," Duke stated when Chin turned to him.
"Let's go."

"No, you don't understand. I need to talk to him now!" Kono yelled at the prim and proper lady behind the reception desk in the governor's mansion.
"I'm sorry but Governor Denning is very busy today. He can't see you at this time."
"Oh he will see us," Doris stated as she pulled a weapon out of the band of her slacks and aimed it at the suddenly shocked secretary. She marched right past the desk and toward the office doors.
"You can't go in there! He's on a conference call!" The frightened secretary protested.
"You're not going to stop her." Kono stated as she jumped between Doris's still raised weapon and the woman before her. "I will restrain you, and I won't let you shoot this woman!" Kono stated angrily back at Doris.
"I'll do what I have to do to find my son!" Doris yelled at Kono.
"What is the meaning of this?" Governor Denning yelled as Doris bust through the door followed by Kono and then his frazzled secretary.
"Steve and Danny have been abducted," Kono stated over the commotion.
"What?" Denning asked and there was a shocked silence that descended in the room.
"They were taken by Gladys McMahon." Doris and Kono stated together.
"Get out!" Denning ordered angrily.
The three women stood their ground.
"Carmen, get out." He ordered again, addressing only his secretary.
The frazzled woman gawked at her boss for a short moment and then turned on her heals and rushed for the door - closing it behind her.
"I'm going to have to call you back," Denning stated as he held up a hand to stop Kono and Doris from talking as he ending the conference call and hung up. Once there was absolute silence in the office, Denning motioned toward Kono - giving her permission to speak first.
"Danny and Steve were abducted last night by several men. There are signs of a struggle at the McGarrett house and we need your permission to call in our back-up - everyone and everything we could need on this case to save our friends. We were all named in a letter, threatening all of us, but first she'd going to deal with Steve and Danny. We don't have much time." Kono explained.
"I want to see the letter." Denning ordered.
"It's already with the crime lab." Kono stated.
"So the asking for my permission to call in your back-up is just a formality?" Denning asked in frustration.
"There are a few people that we need your permission to bring onboard - for their own protection - but yes, we've already taken all the preliminary steps to put ourselves in a good position assuming we have our full immunity and means." Kono confessed.
"You have it," Denning said with a nod, "now tell me who exactly was named in that letter." he ordered.
"Lori, Chin, Catherine, Charlie, Max and myself." Kono explained, "and Toast but he's already in the office."
"Fine, call in your team. I'll get Weston back from the mainland, and Kono, find Gladys before she kills Danny and Steve. Find her and get her off the streets by any means possible." Denning ordered.
"Yes Sir!" Kono stated.
"I'll put HPD and the island on high alert."
"They already are," Kono said with a cheeky sort of smile and then turned to leave the office.
"I'll make it more so." Denning stated, getting in the last word and setting the case in motion.
