Chapter 25: The McMillans

"Stop!" Steve yelled but the action was futile, the fugitive was off and running.

Steve and Danny both bolted, as they choked on the smoke, and struggled to see. It was like Misha had known they were coming. They passed through the door and into the back office space, and quickly out into the parking lot in the back of the building.

As they exited the building they heard a car door slam shut and an engine rev. Gun shots rang out from the car as the tires squealed, and Danny and Steve dove behind a dumpster for cover. The smoke was escaping the building by now, having followed Danny and Steve as they rushed through it, and it obscured the scene only slightly, but Misha was still well ahead of them and being very reckless.

Suddenly, there came a loud crash, with the squealing of brakes and the smell of burning rubber, and as Danny and Steve looked out from their hiding place, the barrage of bullets started again.

"He can't get away!" Steve yelled, and braving the bullets, fired back.

The fire fight lasted only moments as the ringing in their ears, from the smoke bomb, subsided to the yelling of their team mates, and the pops and cries of automatic weapons rang off building, as civilians could be heard screaming at the sounds. As the smoke cleared and the scene started to make itself come to order, Danny and Steve realized what had just happened.

Misha Prokovia had made a mad attempt to flee, but Chin and Lou arrived just in time to block the entrance to the parking lot. The back-up that Danny and Steve had brought with them were now quickly moving into place, or evacuating the civilians from the busy street. The get away vehicle had started to jump the embankment, between the road and the back parking lot, as the fleeing fugitive tried to avoid the collision with Lou and Chin, but instead the car tipped to one side and slid into the vehicle in it's path. Moments later, Prokovia attempted to climb out of the tipped vehicle, all while still firing at police, but failed. His limp body now hung halfway out of the passenger side of the car. Misha Prokovia was most certainly dead.

"Now we'll really have made her mad!" Danny said as he stepped out from behind the dumpster, as more of their back-up moved in cautiously.

"Not as mad as this," Steve said as he stood holding up the lid of the dumpster.

Danny moved in for a closer look and cursed under his breath.

"I figured something was up when I knelt in blood." Steve added as Danny shook his head and quickly looked away.

There, in a pile, lay what looked like four bodies, badly mutilated, two men and two women. They were beaten and bound, and discarded like yesterday's trash.

"More loose ends," Danny said with a sigh, and then yelled to all the officers and anyone listening over the radio connection. "Shut down this whole block, and send the teams in to shut down the Photography studio and Landscaping business. Save some lives if you can, and get those civilians out of the way!"

"Neither of these men look like Mack McMillan," Steve said when Danny had shouted his orders. "They are both too young, and McMillan's face was plastered all over the front of the building, and bus stops all over the island."

"He can't be far away," Danny said and motioned for Steve to follow him, with Chin and Lou who had come to join them. The four men moved back through the bond officer, clearing the rooms as they went. Minor signs of struggles were evident in the back offices. Nothing seemed out of place in the front, but Misha had left the door open that joined the two units together.

"Now they are just taunting us," Steve stated angrily as he walked through the door and cursed. "They knew we would come here."

In the second office space they found who they's been looking for. Mack McMillian had been strung up by both of his wrist and anchored to the floor by both of his feet. He was placed, almost sacrificially, right in front of the blinded windows. He had been tortured. The files, in what must have been his private office, were scattered all over the floor. In the middle of the room, where four dark blood pools that stained the hardwood floor - all in a perfect line. Danny moved passed it to the dest in the corner and before anyone knew what had happened he threw a glass statue that he'd picked up off the desk, at the wall across the room. It shattered against the cinderblock wall, and Danny crumbled to his knees in a sobbing mess behind the desk.

"Go," Steve motioned to Lou, who had followed him in, with Danny, and the new man left to find Chin.

Rushing to his partner's side, Steve caught a glimpse at the photos on the desk, and knew what had cracked Danny. The four bodies in the dumpster were none other than Mack McMillans two sons, his wife and his daughter, and the four stains on the floor were where they had been tortured, and murdered, right before their father's eyes.

"They knew we were coming. They knew what we would find. They know the connections we will make. They know everything about us and if they knew how to get to us, they know how to get to my child." Danny choked. "I can't do this. I can't watch, as children die. I don't care how old they are. We cannot let anymore children die."

"We've got so many of them safe, with us, back at HQ, Danny. We are saving people, and Grace is perfectly safe with her mother on the mainland. Gladys is not getting off of this island." Steve vowed.

"But are they safe?" Danny asked as he grabbed his partner by the front of the shirt and shook him. "They should be as far away from us as they can get." He yelled. "Daniel got into a police precinct. Gladys got into a post nine/eleven airport terminal. Don't you think she can get to us if she wanted to? They are toying with us, Steve!"

"I have to believe that we can do this," Steve said calmly. "I have to. And now that Gladys doesn't have her right hand man, her partner in all this, who does she have? We got one of them, Danny. We'll get her too."

"She still has the Waiholi brothers." Danny said as he released his partner and fell back in defeat. "She still has the upper hand and the space between us. She's still out there."

"I know, but we're so close now." Steve said as he knelt down beside Danny. "Hang in here with me, just a little longer, Danno. We can do this."

"Okay."
