A/N: My goodness, I'm cutting it close this Friday. It's been a busy week for me and I think things are just going to get crazier, and then Grey's Anatomy happened last night and I quit at life! So here is some Five-O whump-ish to make up for it!

Chapter 31: Hold The Fort

"Get in the car!" Steve yelled at his partner as he threw the phone at Danny and bolted. "Come on, we have to go!" He shouted at the rest of his team just before he slammed the driver's side door and Danny jumped to follow him. He knew his efforts were futile, but Steve just had to do something to try.

"What is going on?" Danny asked as Steve floored the Camaro.

Dust flew everywhere - the sirens screamed and they were off. Steve's face showed all of the danger signs and worry was printed in his every move - it was all he was feeling in that moment of frantic panic.

"What's going on?" Danny heard Catherine ask for details, over the coms, as Danny himself continued to ask the same thing, but Steve seemed to clam up as he sped away from the Waiholi Compound.

"Steve! Talk to me!" Danny demanded as they hit the main road and the tires of the Camaro squealed against the asphalt.

"We've angered the bear. Lock down the Hale. Get to safety. Get everyone to safety, Cat! The Waiholi brothers are coming for you."

"We'll never make it back there in time." Danny stated.

"I know." Steve said and their was desperation in his voice.

"We've got this." Catherine stated over the radio connection but even with the static her voice wavered. "Just get here as soon as you can."

"I'm trying!" Steve responded. "We're on our way."

"No. No. No!" Toast panicked as the minimal crew that was left behind jumped into action. "We can't just leave the tech. It's our life line! It's the only link to the outside we have, we need it! I need to stay with it!" He yelled over the commotion.

"Then vest up!" Catherine ordered, "and be ready for battle," she added and Toast nodded. "Get the civilians to the basement. Get to the bomb shelter and lock them in. Stay guarded. Go now! Move." She ordered to two of the HPD men who had remained by to watch over the men and their families, who had helped Gladys, and to provide back-up to Catherine and Toast should something arise. They moved at her orders, shuffling the families out of the officer space - waking children and yelling orders at the three families and the couple from the jungle who had arrived to be protected. They moved out of the office and away from the upper levels of the building as they heard the commotion that had started outside.

Down in the basement, past the interrogations rooms, and right on through to the very deepest, darkest, parts of the Hale, was the emergency shelter, built during times of unrest to protect high ranking officers, monarchies, and civilians from the devastation of combat. Now it was used, more often than not, as a storm shelter, or to protect the others that used the Hale, as it was not just home to Five-O, when Five-O did bring their work home with them.

Staying behind, men and women from HPD and the navy suited up. The alarm was raised out side and the barricade was reenforced and weapons were drawn. The lines were clearly marked in the sand and the battle was about to begin. A sick sort of silence fell all around them as they listened. The emergency sirens continued to keep the island on lock down as the sound of sirens - police sirens - wailed in the distance and then before anyone knew what was happening, a white van, with the construction company logo on the side, came speeding toward the barricade. Behind them was an unmarked vehicle and then the pursuing police cruisers. Gun fire was being exchanged between the van's passenger side window and the pursuing cars, and then all of a sudden it stopped. The window in the van was rolled up and the van's speed was accelerated as it slammed into the police barricade and right through it onto the lawn of the Ali'iolani Hale.

The pursuing cruisers screamed to a halt as the van bounced and landed with a thud next to the towering statue of the king. For a brief moment there was silence. Officers scrambled, preparing to move toward the van, until suddenly the back doors flew open and the two men inside threw themselves on the ground. They rolled in opposite directions, covered in what looked like body armour and with weapons strapped to every inch of their bodies. Then, as they rolled away, fire shot straight out of the back of the van, violently but controlled, and right at the approaching officers.

Smoke followed the fires, as the officers hit the deck and in their momentary blindness the gunshots resumed. Bullets sprayed in every direction, without rhyme of reason, as the Waiholi brothers made their way toward the entrance to the grand old building.

Everything that happened at the Hale echoed through the Five-O vehicles as they sped to save their friends, but the distance that they needed to cover left them helpless. With sirens blaring and engines pushed to their absolute limits, the Five-Os could do nothing but listen as the battle raged on outside of their office.

As the smoke started to clear, and the bullets betrayed the direction of the fugitives, the officers outside of the Hale got to their feet and moved forward cautiously, but they would be too late. Taking out the guards at the doors of the Hale, Kimo and Kona Waiholi burst into the lobby of the Ali'iolani Hale, and shedding the spent weapons that they had used, they picked up more from their arsenal that they wore. Firing at everything that moved, the officers in the lobby fell, and soon the brothers moved forward again. Taking cover in an alcove, back to back, to get the lay of the land, the Waiholi brothers finally made their demands.

"Where are the Five-Os? We've come for them but will kill anyone who stands in our way!" Kimo Waiholi demanded and his voice echoed off of the marble floor.

"You've got the wrong site." Someone amongst the fallen officers yelled. "They haven't returned from the North Shore yet."

"No, we have the right site." Kona announced with a laugh, "because they will be back and we'll be waiting." he added and opened fire once again in all directions to silence the person who had answered him.

Silence fell again in the lobby and Kimo and Kona took the opportunity to move on up the stairs toward where they would find the Five-O office. At the end of the hallway, just before they turned the corner, they heard movement. Without aiming they fired into the hallway. There was a cry of pain, the screams of children and then the slam and clang of an emergency door.

"Someone's getting away!" Kona yelled and he and his brother rushed right past the Five-O office and toward the stairwell.

"No. No. No!" Catherine cursed under her breath and retreated back into the middle of the bullpen. "They didn't have time to get away!"

"But we are safe here for now, and I can see them!" Toast stated. "Get out of the stairwell as fast as you can," he ordered and watched as the officers and families rushed for the basement. They'd made it to the bottom level and had opened the door, and were spilling into the basement when the door above opened. Carrying the wounded, they pushed forward and heard the door above clang shut. Then thunderous footsteps could be heard following them.

"Hurry!" Toast yelled as he frantically typed into the computer before him.

"They'll never make it all the way to the shelter before those men get there!" Catherine said and jumped into a run, followed by the back-up who had remained in the office with them. "We have to go after them!" She ordered.

"Wait!" Toast yelled as the fleeing civilians made it through the door into the sub level of the building before the Waiholis reached the bottom. "They just need to get out of that stairwell!" He added and watched, still typing frantically.

The door clanged shut behind them - pulled by the officers leading the civilians away, and then, as gun shots started to sound once more, the stairwell was plunged into darkness.

Over the monitors, Toast could see the Waiholis slam into the basement door and stop. They pushed and pulled, and shot at the hinges and locks, but it would not open.

"Get to the shelter now!" Toast ordered, over the coms, as the civilians and their HPD guard continued to maneuver the maze that was the subterranean level of the building.

"Have have you done?" Catherine asked as she watched the Waiholis frantically rush up the stairs to try the door they'd come through.

"I hacked the buildings security system and initiated the lock down protocols, on that stair well only. The doors locked and the power went out, and the only way to bypass that is manually with the keys and the codes to the security panels on the doors. That stairwell is as good as a jail cell right now." Toast stated proudly.

"Toast, those doors aren't going to hold agains that," Catherine yelled as she watched in the dim light of the back up power. The brothers were stripping themselves of their layers of armour and had pressed explosives they'd been wearing against the upper level door.

"That's going to take a whole chunk out of the building, not just the door!" He stated as the brothers moved to the bottom of the stairs. "They aren't going to survive that!"

"Hit the deck!" Catherine screamed as light flashed on the monitors and then the bomb was heard.

The whole building shook, smoked billowed through the halls, and everything went dark around them.
