Dean made fun of Sam for about another 5 minutes before he seemed to run out of things to say and fell silent again.

"Dean."Sam said softly.

"What?" Sam turned his head but from Xander's position he had no idea what kind of silent conversation the two of them were having, he wasn't even sure that if he could see their expressions whether or not he would know what their looks meant anyways.

"Okay." Dean said after a long moment "the next rest stop." he said after another long moment. Xander looked between the two of them trying to figure out what it was they were talking about.

"For those of us in the peanut gallery who have no idea what's going on...what's going on?" Xander asked confused.

"We agreed while you were asleep." Sam said insistently, "That we would take 5 hour turns and Dean's five hours are up." Dean said nothing and he couldn't see his face, but he knew that Dean wasn't a big fan of this plan. Xander guessed that he preferred to be the one who drove. Xander spotted a rest stop sign in the distance which said that they would be reaching a rest stop in 5 miles.

"So who's driving next?" Xander asked. He didn't mind, he'd had a good amount of sleep and his head felt a lot better. "I can drive." Xander offered after Sam didn't answer his question. Sam turned his head around so that Xander could actually see his face.

"How's your head?" Sam asked frowning looking concerned.

"Good, good thing my skull is so thick." Xander said rapping his knuckles about a centimeter away from his skull. Sam frowned but didn't say anything either for or against the idea of his driving. They all sat in silence for a few minutes and just when Xander was going to ask what that meant Dean pulled off the freeway and into the rest stop parking lot.

A blue minivan pulled up right next to them, the doors opened and a flood of kids seemed to leak out of the mini-van. Dean shook his head and exited the car and headed towards the restroom. Xander didn't need to use the restroom but his legs were cramping from spending so long sleeping on the back seat of his car, which normally was never even sat on. He was pretty sure that he was the first person to sit in the backseat ever since he had bought the car from a car auction lot but that didn't really matter. He made his way out of the car and decided to take a small walk so that he could stretch his legs a little bit. He barely noticed the sound of the car door but he did see Sam getting out of the car as well. Sam used his long legs to close the short distance between the two of them very quickly.

"I'm not sure you should drive so soon, after a concussion, sometimes you feel okay and you're not."

"I'm fine." Xander insisted.

"You probably are fine" he said giving him a non-threatening smile "but it would just make me more comfortable if I drove first in case you start to feel not so fine." Xander bristled a bit at being told he shouldn't drive his own car, but then he calmed down. He'd had a pretty serious head injury and maybe Sam was right? Maybe he shouldn't drive. Xander sighed but nodded. Sam gave him a small grateful smile and turned to the freeway watching the cars passing by them. They watched the cars flash by for a few moments before Sam spoke while still facing the freeway.

"I know that recently I've been a little…" he paused as if trying to find the right word "obsessed with getting Dean back and I've told you a lot about Dean but I haven't asked anything about yourself." he laughed a little. "I don't even know much about you, other than you were raised in Sunnydale and live in Cleveland and the witch who gave us the spell is your best friend….I'm sorry-" Xander decided to interrupt him as he suddenly understood Sam and Dean's connection. He turned to face Sam so that they were now looking each other in the eyes.

"Sam, it's okay you care for Dean, it's been you and Dean all the way. Willow isn't my sister by blood but she's like a sister to me. If she were somewhere else... somewhere I couldn't reach her, I doubt I'd be able to focus on anything else." As much as he cared for Buffy, and Dawn, and Giles and a few of the new slayers, no one could hold a candle to Willow. They had so much history together, so much past, he couldn't imagine what he would do if Willow ever was lost or died.

"Even a long lost brother?" Sam asked with raised eyebrows.

"I nearly died once to keep her from doing something I knew she would regret and I'd do it again in a heartbeat." And he would, even though it had been a painful experience, more painful than he had ever let on. The earth's energy was not meant to be thrown at a person, it felt for a moment when the energy hit him each time that his insides were being ripped out. The cuts hadn't been pleasant either but the energy blasts, those had been the most painful things he had experienced in his life and he had had his eye gouged out. Sam nodded but still looked apologetic.

"Okay but I'm still sorry, and I want to make up for it. I know we can't do much since we need to get to Cleveland to save Cas but I want to get to know you on the way...I mean if you'd like to tell me." Xander smiled.

"I'd like that." he said.
