Hey Guys! Sorry it's been so long, like I've mentioned in earlier chapters my school work has been super intensive along with the stress of being at a new school. Also I've just recovered from a concussion a few weeks ago, I know just my luck right? And have been swamped with makeup work. But on the awesome side, Thanksgiving Break marked one year since I published the first chapter! Thank you to all who have supported me along the way and everyone who is still falling in love with my story, it means a lot. With exams just a week again I can't promise any new chapter but hopefully around Christmas break I can crank a few out. Expect big things my friends :) I hope you enjoy
Jordi's POV
'What do you mean Bee's missing?" I can't control the quivering in my voice.
"I overheard Nurse Brittany say it!" Emma replies equally panicked.
"Okay, let's think logically here." Leo says. "What could've happened to cause her to run off like that?"
"She runs off all the time." Kara scoffs swooping into the conversation.
"Kara we really don't need your smart comments right now." I snap at her. Dash runs into the Swamp.
"The nurses aren't telling me anything, we're completely in the dark." He pants.
"Well let me give you all a little tip off." Kara speaks above the nervous rambling. "I overheard Nurse Jackson on the phone with Bee's aunt last night. I think she's given up on her, from what I could tell she told Nurse Jackson that she wouldn't be coming in any more for therapy."
"Think that's why she ran off?" Emma asks inquisitively.
"Makes sense." I mumble. "Guys we have to find her."
"Jordi the hospital staff already has a search party out, there's nothing we can do except sit back and wait. Even if we could go off and search for her we'd never make it past Kenji and Brit." Leo tells me sadly placing a sympathetic hand on my knee. Heat rushes to my face.
"This isn't what the Red Bands are about!" I growl. "What happened to Brotherhood Leo? Bee is a part of us and we can't just leave her out there scared and alone."
"Jordi, Leo's right. There's nothing we can do right now. We just have to stay strong and trust that Bee will come back." Emma tells me sadly. Trust. How could I trust Bee when I have this twisted feeling in my gut that keeps telling me she's going to do something stupid?
"You know what?" I glare at all of them. "You all can stay here and play your little waiting games. I'm going to find her on my own." I storm out of the room, aware of them shaking their heads behind me
"Jordi, wait." I hear Kara in a hushed tone. I ignore her and keep marching down the hallway. "Jordi I want to help." She says a little louder.
"Look I don't want your help okay?" I turn around and snap at her.
"Of course you do." She smirks crossing her arms. "Who else would be able to get you a car?"
Bee's POV
I look out at the busy road in front of me. LA traffic speeding by and the blare of horns sounding off and on. Wind whips at my face from all the vehicles and my cheeks are a raw pink.
"Don't do it Bee." Claire shakes her head beside me. I block her out.
I take a deep breath before sprinting across the intersection. I unconsciously swerve around cars bearing straight towards me, in my mind I'm hating myself for not letting them just hit me like planned. I make it to the other side unscathed, nothing to show for my daredevil stunt.
"You're an idiot!" Claire is beside me once more.
"Shut up okay?!" I cry out, crazed sobs halting on my lips.
"This isn't going to solve anything and you're not going to get what you want, that's not the plan. Just listen to me for once!" Claire shouts in my ear even though she's a few feet away from me. "Quit being so damn stubborn and trust me. You getting yourself killed is just going to make everything a bigger mess."
I glare at her before I clench my teeth before running across again, this time I don't swerve for cars, they swerve for me. Honks and angry shouts fill the air but again I make it to the other side alive.
"What the Hell? Why's this not working?" I ask over and over biting my nails, pacing alongside the road, searching for a more dangerous spot.
"Bee stop!" Claire is still fighting with me but now she's more panicky.
"What's wrong with me Claire?" I ask her sadly. "What makes me so awful that everyone I love leaves me?" I'm so overwhelmed by pain that I collaspe and shake with sobs.
"Just hang in there Bee, just a little bit longer." I hear Claire murmur. "They'll be here soon."
"Who?" I ask. "Claire did you call someone?" I scream. "Why? Why would you do that to me? You know this is what I want! I want to be with you and dad."
"I'm here. See I'm here with you." Claire tries to calm me down desperately. "Dad's here too, I promise." She keeps glancing over her shoulder at the cars, scanning for a familiar face. Her features soften and I know that they are almost here. They're going to stop me.
I look between the road and her before I hoist myself up and sprint back into the traffic. I close my eyes now, determined to let fate chose my path.
"Bee!" I hear a voice call. "Bee!" I stop in the middle of the road, opening my eyes to search for who was calling me.
"Jordi!" My heart drops when I see him hanging outside the passenger side of a grey car a few lanes back. His jaw drops and fear spreads across his features.
"Bee watch out!" His scream terrified and filled with urgency. I realize I'm still standing in the middle of the intersection and next thing I know a force knocks me down. Everything go black.
Jordi's POV
"Kara pull over!" I scream but she's frozen in shock. I jump out of the car and race around the now stopped cars to get to her. I kneel down beside her, she has a gash in her forehead and her shoulder is sticking out at a weird angle. I feel sick to my stomach and I realize I've stopped breathing myself.
"Bee," I gasp. "Bee wake up, open your eyes please!" A man staggers over from a car strewn across to the other side of the road. I glare up at him. "Did you do this?" I scream. "Did you hit her?"
"I'm sorry." He stutters in shock like the rest of us. "She was j-just standing there and I thought, I thought she was going to move but I couldn't hit my brakes in time and-"
"You son of a bitch!" I spit in his face, shoving him hard. "Do you see what you've done? This is all your fault! You've ruined everything!" I pant hard,
"I love her."
I hear a labored breath come from below me and my attention snaps back to Bee.
"Jordi." She chokes on her words.
"Bee, stay with me." I say, my own head beginning to spin. Dots blur over my vision and I haphazardly sit beside her. "Call 911." I direct weakly to the man I was shouting at before the world spins out of vision.
Nurse Jackson's POV 1
I'm working at the front desk, the best spot for receiving updates on Bee's disappearance. A middle aged woman in a wheelchair with shoulder length blonde hair and familiar crystal blue eyes rolls up to the desk, a soft smile on her face.
"How can I help you today Ma'am?" I ask politely, forcing myself to stop nervously rummaging through paper files.
"I'm here to see someone," She says in a sweet voice.
"Of course, what's their name?" The emergency phone beside me rings suddenly and I pick it up.
"It's my daughter." She tells me. I try to listen between her and the dispatcher on the phone.
"Dena, we've found her. It's not good, we've just pulled in. They're getting her out now and there's a boy with her. He's not doing too well either." The ambulance dispatcher tells me.
"Maybe you know her." The woman in front of me goes on. "Her name is-"
"Phoebe Johnson!" I exclaim looking over her shoulder at the limp body being rolled in on a stretcher. Jordi follows behind, on a stretcher of his own, an oxygen mask secured over his pale face.
"Yes! That's her." The woman exclaims also, but in a happier tone of recognition, that is until her gaze follows mine to see her daughter lying on a stretcher about to be rushed into the emergency room. "Oh my God." She cries and everything begins to connect in front of me. My eyes widen, this was Bee's mother. Mrs. Johnson had woken up from her coma, and made it to the hospital just in time to see her daughter nearly slip into one.
"Kenji!" I call. "Kenji please escort Mrs. Johnson into Bee's room." His eyes widen when I mention Johnson and I nod.
"No, somebody tell me what's wrong with my daughter." She demands trying to hide the panic in her voice.
"I promise Mrs. Johnson we will keep you informed. You just need to sit tight right now while we figure out what's going on." I tell her finally pushing her out of the way to race towards the emergency room.
Kenji comes up taking Anne by the arm, leading her into Phoebe's room. "My name is Kenji, I'm one of the nurses here." He rambles calmly. "Mrs. Johnson, right?"
"Please call me Anne." She tells him numbly.
"Bee's mother." He says in disbelief. "Well this is her residence room, please make yourself comfortable and don't hesitate to ask for anything. We will keep you posted." he tells her getting ready to run back to the emergency room.
"Wait," She stammers. "Kenji, would you mind… just staying here with me? Just for a little bit." He hesitates before nodding and reentering the room. She sighs, wringing her hands out in front of her, a nervous habit both she and Bee share.
"You said you were a nurse." She tries to break the silence. "Did you know Bee?"
"Yes, everyone here was very lucky to know her. Very sweet, charming, lovable girl." She smiles softly, however despair still lingered in her clear eyes
"Did she heal from those broken ribs? I know Tess told me she got beat up pretty badly. And something about a bad head injury." Kenji's eyes widen debating on whether to break even worse news to the poor woman.
"Yes, um her head injury tended to blur her good judgement in many cases but all other physical injuries were no real obstacle. She had a great group of loyal friends here and I think that helped her a lot."
"Being social was always one of her main priorities. She was very close with all her friends, always sacrificing herself to spend time with them and putting them before her. I think deep down she always feared they'd leave her, but she was adored by so many." Anne glances at the bed before shaking her head.
"She never was very organized." She sighs, making her way over to make the bed to make it. She pulls the sheets off the bed and then the pillows when there is the sudden sound of glass breaking. Both of their heads snap up startled and then Anne begins to carefully move aside the linens until a shattered picture frame appears.
She picks it up, tears gathering in her glassy eyes. They linger sadly for a moment. She turns it around to show Kenji a newspaper article featuring the Johnson's car accident, a giant crack over the family photo of them from last spring. Everyone was so happy then, and yet so much has changed in just a year.
"Look," her voice cracks to a whisper. "A broken family."
Good luck to everyone taking mid-terms these next few weeks!
Lots of Love - Britt
