Previously on Maybe, it's worth it: "We'll look what we have here. Pup's got himself a mate and she's a stubborn bitch," an eerie voice said behind us.

I could feel my blood chill. Derek froze behind me. His strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling my back to him. My breathing became unsteady.

"I was thinking the exact same thing. I know we could have a lot of fun with her," a second voice said with a chuckle.

"I know," replied the first voice. They both began to laugh. "Do you smell that? Fear. It's so enticing," the first voice spoke again.

"Let us leave in peace; we have done you no wrong." Derek said, in a way I have never heard from him before. It was menacing.

"No, you are right. You haven't done anything, but we have. You see pup we're man-eater/nomads. We're on the run from The Pack." Derek froze at the mad-man's words. Man-eaters? Was that like cannibalism? The Pack? Who was that to make my strong Derek begin to shake?

"What does that have to do with us?" Derek asked, a growl rumbled up from his chest.

"Well we don't want to die by the hands of The Pack. I have been told stories of how they force you to change. Then, they rip out your teeth and claws. When they force you to change back-"the sound of his voice was muffled by Derek's warm hands, covering my ears.

Derek and the two monsters continued to talk. I could feel Derek growl behind me.

Finally there was one last reply from Derek. His words were soft. The monsters behind us spoke one sharp word, and I felt Derek give up all hope. His shoulders curved around my body, and his head hung on my shoulder.

"Derek? What's wrong?" I asked looking at his head. He opened one eye, one beautiful green eye. But his eyes weren't soft and full of life like normal; no they were hard and cold with his fear. Derek made a sharp look down. He repeated the gesture until I followed his eyes down to his lips. They spoke a silent word. It took me a moment to read his lips, but without a doubt he was telling me to run. I felt my eyes go wide as my lips parted in protest.

Derek crushed his lips to mine. His arms tightened their hold on me. When he finally pulled back for air he rested his chin on top of my head. We gazed back at the park. I could see the tree where we laid just this morning. We were having such a great time. It was a dream come true, but now it was a nightmare

"I love you," Derek whispered breaking me away from my thoughts. No, he would not say his goodbyes to me now!

"Hey now! No talking." Barked one of the mad-men.

"Turn her around! I want to see the face of a Cain mate." The other monster demanded.

Derek stood to his full height. He moved me in front of his body, pulling me close to his chest. I finally got to see the faces of our captivators.

They were both in their late twenties. Scruffy clothes and dirty hair, was just about all they had in common. One of the men had mud caked blond hair with cold blue eyes that had me leaning into Derek. His nose was strait and his smile was creepy and determent. The other guy had dark brown hair with curls over growing into his eyes, his black eyes. They held the glint of insanity. His nose crocked from being broken one too many times. They were both tall and muscular with similar builds to Derek.

"Now that's better," said the blond man.

"She is such a pretty girl for such an ugly pup." The brunet sneered.

"Tell me pup, does she know?" The blond man asked with an evil glint in his eye. Derek didn't say anything. "Does she know that you're a monster who goes bumping into the night?" He laughs. Derek's sharp no cut through there laughter.

"Alright all this talking is getting old. I am becoming bored." The blond man said looking off.

"Oh no, nothing good happens when he becomes bored." The brunet promised us.

"Y-yo-u cou-uld le-et us-s-s go-o." I spoke up.

"Oh look Ramon! She speaks, now this is getting interesting!" The blond said.

"Why yes I would say this solves your problem of boredom." The brunet said who I assume was Ramon.

"Tell me cutie, do you want to have a little fun with us?" The blond, who I had now decided was the man in charge, asked.

"Let her leave you can take me. I just want to know she's home safely." Derek pleaded.

"No no no, that won't do! Things just got interesting." The blond said.

"Yeah pup, why do you get her to all to yourself? Ramon said.

"She is not a part of our world. And I want to keep it that way." Derek said with a growl. I didn't understand what they were talking about. What was so different about their world, other than the fact that these two monsters were man eaters, but why did that involve Derek?

"Tell me cutie; do you think your boyfriend here is human?" The blond spat his words at me. I nodded my head. What else could he be? He was just a teenage boy- most teen boys were pigs, but not Derek. He was neat and smart. He always acted as a complete genital man.

The blond made a tisk-tisk noise as he began to pace in front of us. With each pass he moved closer. Derek tightened his arms around me.

"Well my my pup you have left your little blond in the dark! She has heard too much and we will just have to kill her and take you." The blond said sounding disappointed.

"We really didn't want to do this, but now knowing that she is just a dumb human we can't keep her. It is your entire fault for keeping secrets and from your mate. I'm surprised you made it this far! What kind of relationship can you have that's built all on lies?" Ramon asked. I felt a gasp escape my lips without permission.

"That's right cutie; your boyfriend here is not human. He is a monster just like us." The blond said.

"Now that is enough!" Derek growled. His voice was so animalistic, it terrified me. I took my eyes off our captivators and look up to Derek his eyes were no longer green, but illuminating silver. I whimpered in fear. I would have run away in that moment, but I was paralyzed in my spot. Derek snapped his head down to look at me.

"There is no need to be frightened little one. I will always protect you, and never hurt you." A voice from Derek said, but it wasn't Derek's voice. I nodded my head un-able to say anything. A warm breeze licked at my skin and I felt safe.

"We'll look Liam! The wolf has come out to play!" said Ramon.

"Hey you're right Ramon! Look here mutt your pretty little mate here is no longer your concern. I think you should worry about your own problems." The blond said who I assumed to be Liam.

Derek charged Liam. He hit him low in the gut like a bull. (AN: Just so you know if you are facing a strong enemy go for their knees to knock them down. Thank you football! Ahem- caring on with the story) Liam fell to the ground. Ramon jumped on to Derek's back but it didn't faze him. Derek threw Ramon off his back and pined Liam to the ground.

"Chloe now would be the time to run!" Derek shouted looking behind me. Ramon was dusting himself off about to charge after me. I high tailed it out of there. I ran as fast as my short legs could carry me. Thankfully Ramon tripped and he fell giving me more of a head start. I ran to Derek's beat up old pick-up truck. I jumped into the cab, thankful we left it unlocked when we ditched the basket and blanket before ice-cream. I picked up my cell phone and dialed the number. After a few rings it picked up.

"9-1-1, what's your emergency?"

-…-

Hearing footsteps my heart began to race. Oh no, Ramon. He must have found me! I shrunk down to the dirt-mats in Derek's truck hoping to hide. I could feel my heart race as tears began to fall down my cheeks. The driver-side opened. I squinted my eyes shut not wanting to see the last moments of life.

"Chloe?" A rough voice whispered. I squinted my eyes tighter.

"Chloe, baby. It's all alright your safe. They're gone." The voice whispered softly. I cracked one eye open. There stood Derek illuminated by the parking-lot lights.

I started to sob. Derek opened my passenger side door and pulled me into his arms. He shushed me and promised I was safe. He ran his fingers through my knotted hair and kissed away my tears. I finally felt safe and warm.

"I was so scared! What happened? I called 9-1-1 they should be here to look at you soon. Oh God are you hurt!?" I said in a rush. My adrenalin was too strong for me to stutter. I started to search his face for scratches or bruises, but there were none.

"I'm fine Chloe. I will explain everything, but right now we need to leave." Derek said sweetly. He set me into the passenger seat and shut to door. I watched him as he walked around the front of the truck to the driver's side. He seemed to be walking fine. No limp was visible.

"But Derek the medics?" I asked.

"I'm fine, but we can't be seen here. I'm driving to my house. There we can talk." He promised.

We pulled out of the park and on to main-street as an ambulance passed with sirens and light blaring.
