The car ride was quiet, but I was thankful for the silence. It was awkward and tense but at the same time it gave me time to catch my thought on what was happening. This morning I was just on my date with Derek. Every small detail was perfect and I was having an amazing time. We ate a great picnic Derek made himself and I learned a few things about him that I never knew. We fell asleep snuggled up to one another, and it was the best sleep I have probably ever had in my life. Then we cleaned up our picnic and walked to an ice-cream shop, but Derek wanted to leave early. He was afraid that we would have to walk through the park at dark. When we walked to the park, it was as Derek feared, it was past sunset. There waiting for us were two men. When they were talking to Derek, it was almost like a different language. They were talking about mates, pups, and the pack. I could never figure out what that meant. Did they mean mate like a friend? They didn't sound English or Australian to me. They keep calling Derek a pup. Was that like he was younger than them? They didn't look like they could be over 30.
When they talked about the pack I could feel Derek physically tense behind me. What was it about this cult that made Derek afraid? Then they said they were man-eaters, did that make the cannibals? They were threatening Derek, telling him that they were going to turn in the young Cain pup. What was a Cain pup? Derek covered my ears so I couldn't hear what they were saying when they started to talk about this Pack.
When Derek uncovered my ears they started talking to me asking if I thought Derek was a monster. I told them Derek was no monster, but they said he was a creature like they were. How could my Derek be like those two?
Then they decided that they like me and that they….. wanted me. This made Derek furious. He became so angry, until he wasn't my Derek anymore. His voice was a growl his eyes silver. He stood up straighter and flexed his muscles. This person was confident and had leadership qualities fanning off of him. Surprisingly enough I felt safe and protected by him. I would trust that man with my life any day.
I had so many questions for Derek. I would demand answers if he refused to give them to me. I deserved answers, because today had really made me question everything I thought I knew.
Something touched my arm and broke me away from my thoughts. I looked over my shoulder to see Derek looking at me with a concerned expression. Once he saw that I was okay he got out of his truck. I watched his receding back side for a moment. I looked out the passenger side window. There nestled in the trees was a cozy looking two story brick house. The lights were on all over the house, and two other cars were parked in the driveway. A Grand Cherokee black Jeep and a dark green Van. This must be where Derek lived. I look back to the forest where Derek went to see where he walked off too, but he was nowhere to be seen. Was I supposed to follow him into the woods?
After another moment of waiting I decided to walk around the edge of the woods and see if I could find him. I tumbled out of the truck and tripped my way over to the forest edge. The land around the Bea home was very pretty. On the edge of the forest there were wild daises growing Most of the trees were Oak or Spruce trees. The night sky was clear full of twinkling stars and a beautiful waning moon.
I peered into the woods to look for any sign of Derek. I wasn't able to see very well in the dark, but it was a nice warm night. I continued to walk enjoying the nice evening when something caught my eye, a dark green shirt hung on a branch. I stepped over into the forest line and plucked the t-shirt form the branch. The shirt was huge and it smelt like the earth, only meaning that it could be Derek's shirt from today. I draped his shirt over my arm looking into the forest for any sign of Derek. I peered into the forest seeing different articles of clothing along the way. I grabbed his sneakers and his jeans, but knowing Derek was running around the forest in just his boxers was just unpredictable. I had to stop and laugh when I saw he boxers tossed into a bush, picking them up I saw that I was standing in a clearing. I looked straight up and the waning moon was above my head. It was out of character that I was so calm. I was alone, and Derek was somewhere streaking through the woods. If something were to happen I would not know where to go, but for some reason I was relaxed. I sat down on an old stump and gazed up at the stars.
I don't know how long I sat there but I was brought back to focus by a loud snap. I looked over the forest unable to see anything I looked back up at the stars trying to calm my racing heart. Another snapping branch was brought to my attention. I started to hyperventilate. I saw something emerge from the forest out of the corner of my eye. I looked over without moving my head, I was able to see a dark blur. I was afraid my heart would beat out of my chest. The Dark shadow moved closer; I stopped breathing. I closed my eyes and just wished I would drop dead right on the spot. I felt a light weight on my thigh. I gasped in surprise I looked down to see a wolf head resting on my leg. I started to shake. The wolf started to make a graveling noise in the back of its throat. I opened my mouth too scream because this wolf was growling at me. A shrill noise escaped my lips when a wet sandpapery tongue licked my hand. My voice broke off in a squall I looked down at the creature, my chest heaving. I looked at its face for the first time. I looked into its eyes. They were a toxic green that just dragged me in until I forgot the world. These were the eyes that I loved. These were the eyes of my Derek.
"Derek?" I asked the wolf. The creature nodded its head.
"But, how?" I asked confused as to what was happening. Derek whined and walked to the center of the clearing. He laid down on his side and began to whine.
I walked over to him, confused. I watched his spine bend out at an awkward angle, I looked away quickly. Derek's whine brought my attention back on him. I crawled up to his head. I began to rub behind his ears. Derek's noises of pain began to quiet down. I looked down at his body. I watched the bones under his skin move and change their position, right before my eyes he became a human again. His fur began to retract into his skin until I could recognize the coloring of his skin. I looked up to his face and his ears shift down to the sides of his face. I studied the size of his teeth as his muzzle retracted and his nose formed to its proper shape, but all the while his beautiful green eyes remained.
Once the process was over a very tired and naked Derek laid by my side. I continued to run my figures through the hair at the top of his head. After a moment of rest Derek shifted into a sitting position. He never bothered looking at me as he walked to his clothes. I turned my head to give him privacy. He cleared his throat to let me know he was decent.
"Hi," he said.
"Um, hi." I said looking away now that things had become awkward. I knew we needed to talk, but things were se complicated now.
"So you're a wolf?" I asked after a pause.
"Werewolf." He grunted. I looked up at the sky too see if there was a full moon.
"I don't have to change when there is a full moon, just once a week if I'm not stressed. I'm sorry about leaving you tonight really set him off." Derek said.
"Who is him?" I asked.
"My wolf. He is like my conscience, but instead of telling me what is right he tells me about instincts, like tonight when those- anyways he was helping keep me calm. I lost control at one point so he took over and protected you." He told me. So that was when his eyes changed color.
"Does he have a name?" I asked.
"I normally just call him wolf." He answered honestly.
"Who were they?" I asked.
"They were the scum of my kind. They killed a human and wanted to turn me in to the Pack so I would take their punishment." He said with anger.
"Who is the Pack?" I asked.
"The pack is the largest group of werewolves. They make sure no none of our kind dose anything to show of our existence to the human world." Derek said.
"How does it work?" I asked.
"It's the magic in my blood. My father was a werewolf, and my mom, his mate was human. She died giving birth to me, so my father hated me for killing the love of his life. He went crazy with rage and started killing humans. The Pack found out and they killed him. His name was Zackery Cain. Her name was Rebecca Souza. The pack found me. They keep me for a couple months until they could find a family for me. They sent me to Kit, Simon and Tori's dad. My dad. I spend my summers with the Pack learning how to control the wolf and my change." Derek said looking back to his house. This explained so much from today.
"I had no Idea you had such a hard child hood." I said after a moment.
"It's okay. If it didn't happen I would never be where I was today." He said. This was a side of Derek I barley ever see, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
"Why did you move here?" I asked curiously.
"We moved to be closer to the Pack." Derek told me.
"Derek?" I asked.
"Yeah?" He answered.
"Thank you for today." I said as I leaned into him.
"You're welcome. I'm just glad you're okay." He said as I drifted to sleep.
