It's been a while, and a lot's changed, Borderlands-wise, but I'm sticking to my guns, and will incorporate canon however I can.
But just so everyone knows, I made Claptrap a Vault Hunter, explored his mind, gave him a dark reflection in his mind, and arguable made him sympathetically tragic before it was cool.
Also theres the whole AI Jack thing, but that's beside the point.
"Good news is that we didn't die!" Claptrap exclaimed.
Athena rubbed her head, looking around. She and Claptrap had barely avoided dying in the crash of the spaceship that had brought them to the moon. The ship was an unrecognizable mess a few yards behind them.
"I was somewhat hoping we wouldn't have to rely on that teleporter this much." Athena said, mainly to herself.
Claptrap wasn't listening anyway. "Wow! I'm feeling pretty light headed! I didn't feel this weird last time we were here! What's so different?" Claptrap wheezed, his face turning slightly blue.
Athena sighed and threw an oxygen pack at Claptrap. "You need oxygen now. That's the difference."
"Oh! Well, that sucks!" Claptrap complained, putting the oxygen mask on. "So these things can run out, right?"
"Potentially." Athena replied. "But we can pick up packs around the area."
"But why would an entire army of robots need oxygen packs?" Claptrap asked.
"Because-" Athena began to say, but stopped herself. To be honest, she wasn't that sure herself. She was just kind of hoping they would be there.
Lucky, Claptrap got distracted again, forgetting his question. "Where are we, anyway?"
Athena had been living on Elpis long enough to be able to tell where she was.
"The good news is that we're close." Athena said, taking out her shield and drawing her sword.
"And the bad news…?" Claptrap asked, concerned.
"We're close." Athena said, before she jumped into the air.
As if cued by Athena, a large group of scavs crawled out from the other side of a large, nearby hill. Upon closer inspection, Claptrap realized that these scavs were simply corpses that had been reanimated by the flesh possession technology. Most of them were missing limbs and torsos.
Claptrap looked up at Athena. "You might have jumped the gun on the whole jumping into action thing."
Athena said nothing. Suddenly, she threw her shield to her left. To Claptrap's surprise, it made contact. A strange, wire-y robot with electric streams coming out of it uncloaked itself and continued its assault on Athena. As the shield bounced around, it uncloaked a couple dozen other similar robots.
The first robot charged at Athena, who shoved her sword toward it. The blade made impact, causing her to pull herself over the robot while cutting through it. The force pushed her toward the origin point of the robots, an abandoned factory in the distance.
"OK!" Claptrap called after the flying gladiator. "I'll just...deal with the creepy zombies." Claptrap begrudgingly walked toward the shambling horde.
Athena's shield found it's way back to her as she kicked herself off of a second robot, barely avoiding electrocution. She caught the shield and threw it at a Robot that had gotten behind her. The shield bounced off the robot and headed back toward Athena. She grabbed the shield and allowed it's momentum to guide her toward another robot.
"Slow down!" Claptrap exclaimed. He had taken out his shotgun and was shooting at the corpses in front of him. The corpses reached and clenched for him, causing him to whack them away with the shotgun.
Athena finally decided to take out a gun, sheathing her sword and pulling out an SMG. She got into a system of kicking herself off of robots for momentum and finishing them off with the SMG.
"I got bit!" Claptrap exclaimed, shaking off a dismembered head chomping on his leg. "I'm gonna turn into one of them! Oh, God! This is horrible! It's the worse thing to ever happen to anybody! Oh, just make sure there are a lot of people at my funeral! They'll all be-" Claptrap paused. "Wait. These aren't zombies. They're abominations against nature! I'll live!"
"Right! New plan!" Claptrap shouted, realizing how far behind he was. In a moment of sudden competency, he killed a good number of the corpses surrounding him. He quickly picked through the loot, grabbing as many OZ kits and jetpacks as he could. He also grabbed a few discarded belts, knowing he would need them.
Athena, meanwhile, had run into a bit of a problem. The robots caught onto her plan to bounce between them, and had begun reflecting her off of themselves toward one another, in an attempt to throw her off course. Athena realized that, at this point, it might be easier to let herself fall and fight them from the ground, even if the corpses might get in the way. She was almost at the factory anyway.
"ATHENAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
Athena turned to the scream.
She wasn't sure how to describe what she was looking at.
Rocketing toward her and the remaining robots was Claptrap, who had tied together a ton of OZ kits and jetpacks, and had launched them toward the factory and, by extension, her. Right as the rocket made contact with the remaining robots, Claptrap had jumped off, pushing Athena down and away with him. The OZ kits began to explode on impact, destroying the robots, but still pushing them forward. Eventually, the rocket collided with the side of the factory, blowing a wall of it up.
Athena, meanwhile, having to deal with Claptrap hugging her waist, angled her shield below her. When the two of them hit the ground, they managed to sled on the shield toward the flaming wreckage.
After they stopped, Athena and Claptrap sat in silence.
"...How is that on fire?" Claptrap asked.
"You may have created a temporary air bubble." Athena replied. "What were you thinking?"
"I wasn't." Claptrap replied. "I do my best work when I don't think things through. Besides, it worked, didn't it?" Claptrap gestured toward the flaming hole.
"...I suppose so." Athena admitted. "I guess it was a bit short-sighted of me to think we would be able to be subtle about this. I doubt this is the last explosion we'll have to deal with."
"I guarantee with won't be!" Claptrap exclaimed. "It's nice working together again, isn't it?"
Athena grimaced. "I...Sure."
"I mean, sure, last time we worked together, we went into my mind and found the program that would ultimately lead to the destruction of my product line, but that's OK, since everyone was pretty happy about that." Claptrap said, still looking at the hole.
"...You know there was nothing I could do." Athena said in her defense.
"I'm not accusing you of anything." Claptrap replied. "And there's no need to say you would have done anything if you could. A hero like you can't save everyone!" Claptrap smiled at Athena. It was the sort of smile Athena had sometimes seen her sister do when Athena described her line of work, which made her uneasy for several reasons.
The gladiator couldn't meet Claptrap's eyes. "I can still save Janey." She said to herself, reminding herself of her goal.
"Right!" Claptrap exclaimed, as he began to walk toward the hole. "She was always nice to me! I mean, she was probably nicer to you, what with the whole crush thing. Did that ever go anywhere? Anyway, we should do whatever it takes to save her! Let's go, friend!"
"Right." Athena said, slowly walking behind Claptrap. "Anything it takes…"
