"Damon, have you seen my red nail polish?"
He walks over, buttoning the same blue shirt I was caught naked in yesterday. "I don't know, maybe Elena stole it," he teased.
I walk over to my jewelry box and pull out a golden dream catcher necklace that goes with my outfit, and clip it behind my bare neck. "I don't think she's got the guts, babe." I smile at him, then I think out loud, "And are you sure you wanna wear that shirt over to Jenna's? Miss Priss is going to be there."
He laughed, "So I'm not allowed to wear my own shirt because Elena has seen your tits spilling out of it? What's the difference with the blouse you've got on now, huh?" Damon gets up close to me, easily trailing his finger down my cleavage in this beige, silk wrap shirt that has a string tie right under my collarbones. "And the rips in your jeans seem to go awfully high, Cara."
Unbuttoning a top button on his shirt I give in. "Alright, go ahead. Just don't spit out my amazing peach cobbler laughing when you see Elena's disgusted face." I dig around in my jewelry box for my opal cartilage earring, find it, then some red rose studs for my upper hole and gold and opal diamond-shaped drop earrings for my first.
In the bathroom I touch up my makeup, black liner with white shadow on my inner lids and beige/tan on the outer. I re-apply my red lipstick and put it in my back pocket along with my phone, then add one last pin to a curl falling from my loose updo. As I put the makeup back away, I find my nail polish hiding in the back of my drawer!
"Found you, ya little shit!" I say out loud. I hear Damon laughing from downstairs, and I go back into our room and sit down next to my side table, where the remover, cu-tips, and nail file are. I get distracted from my task at hand (pun intended) hearing commotion in Stefan's room. Without putting the nailbrush down I speed to his room to see him in a fighting stance, and Katherine standing up from his bed. She takes her attention away from Stefan and goes at me, but I easily dodge her and throw her back onto Stefan's bed.
"Are you really gonna try this again? We both know I could rip you to shreds and do my nails at the same time." I narrow my eyes at her, and set down the wet brush on a table. Damon joins my side, alert and pissed.
"Why the hell are you here? What do you want?" He demands.
She trails her bony finger from each person in the room, landing it on Damon last, "Three reasons; you, you, and you."
Stefan crosses his arms, "See, I have a hard time getting that down."
"Gets stuck in my throat," Damon coughs. Katherine inches closer to him and touches the bit of chest hair peeking out from his shirt, and I let out a growl.
"Well, it's the truth.. just like how deep down in that gorgeous body of yours, you lust after me. Fantasize about me."
I reach over and grab her wrist, twisting it violently behind her back. "Keep your hands off of him, you whore. Damon was never and will never be interested in you- nobody wants you here, Katherine." She rolls her eyes, but deep down in that cold heart- I know she's hurt. "So why are you in Mystic Falls? Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
Stefan shoots me a look and says, "How about we go downstairs and have a calm discussion about this?" I release my hold on Katherine and she rubs her wrist. "Give us a moment, we'll be right down." Katherine slowly proceeds downstairs, Damon and I stay here.
"Did you fuck her? Did she use that tricky sire-bond shit to make you?" Damon asked our brother bluntly.
Stefan uncrossed his arms and stuffed them in his pockets. "No, thank God. She just... got into my head. But that's not the point-"
"We need to use her to our advantage," I interrupt. "She must know what the deal was with werewolves back then, if I didn't."
"I still don't get how you weren't aware of them," Damon comments. "Cara, you're the smartest and oldest vampire I know. How could you not know that there was another supernatural species out there?"
I brush a stray curl behind my ear, "I honestly don't know. Maybe Emily Bennett had something to do with it- gave me a potion or something to keep my attention away from it? I don't know. But for now let's go down there and see what this bitch knows."
The guys nod, and we step out into the hallway. "I'm taking my nail polish with me," I state. I retrieve bottle of red liquid, and before heading downstairs I grab a stake, dipping it in a hidden vial of vervain I keep just in case.
"I'll get her a glass of blood, just for a tension breaker," Stefan offers.
"Get Cara and I some too," Damon tells him. He nods and we go to the parlor, Katherine sitting on the couch with a book in her hands. I decide not to say anything till Stefan gets back, so I lean into Damon, poke him with the blunt end of the stake to let him know I've got it, then slide it behind his back and continue to stroke my nails with the red paint to calm me down. Just the presence of the chick aggravates me... I feel like I want to punch a wall.
"It's not polite to read someone else's diary," Stefan tells her, giving her a glass of blood and taking the old journal. He sits down to Damon's right and hands him a glass, setting mine on the coffee table.
Katherine sighs, "I know, I'm sorry...it was just too tempting! All of your thoughts and feelings... laying there on the desk for me to read." She swirls the blood around the glass, eyeing it.
"From our private stock," I tell her.
She snapped her bony little fingers, "Right! Stefan doesn't do human- I read that. I also read about your recent werewolf sighting. That must've come as a surprise."
Damon leans forward curiously, "What do you know about werewolves, huh?"
"I know not to pet one," she winks. "Their bite kills. It's best to stay clear of them during a full moon." She stands up and paces around her chair.
"And how do you know this?" I ask.
Katherine leans over the chair and glares at me, "Who do you think was responsible for ridding this town of vampires in 1864?"
"The founding families," I reply.
"Spearheaded by..?"
I lean back into Damon, "The Lockwoods."
Katherine smiles. "Do you remember the first Founder's Ball?"
Damon rolls his eyes, "Yeah. That was the first town event me and Cara went to as an engaged couple." I twirled my engagement ring mindlessly.
Katherine continued, "That was when Henry first told me about the Council. He said that they were blaming werewolf attacks on vampires, and that's when I knew George Lockwood would be a huge problem."
"Soo you're saying that all the Lockwoods are werewolves?" I ask, sipping my blood.
"The werewolf gene runs in the Lockwood family, not that they're all wolves."
Damon leans forward, moving his hand from my shoulder to my thigh. "Well how many werewolves are out there? I mean, is it just limited to the Lockwoods?"
Katherine lolls her head with a pause. "Not really... There are others, just not many of them. Currently they mainly exist in books and really bad movies. Now it's my turn to ask a question,"
Oh god, what could this be? I'm gonna need something stronger than B- to hold off another minute without stabbing her.
"Why did you all come back to Mystic Falls? I know Stefan- he comes here every couple years to check on things, the falls in love with my doppelganger, blah blah blah.." She does a puppet gesture with her hands for talking, then comes around the chair and looks at Damon and I. "But you two... You're the mystery. Opening the tomb couldn't be the only thing on your agenda."
Uncomfortably, I twist the brush back into the bottle of crimson nail polish and claps by hands together, being careful of my wet nails. "Who's to say that we weren't just stopping by, too? I needed some things I left here; clothes, jewelry-"
"Don't bother, Cara," Damon sighed, "If we're gonna get the truth outta her we might as well spill it." He turned his glance to Stefan, "The past decade or so Cara and I have been trying to... let go of some anger towards you. So... we came back, intentionally, to reconcile."
Katherine sat back down, surprised obviously, and Stefan just looks at his brother wide eyed. "You're kidding, right? How do you expect me to believe that when all you've been doing-"
"I know," I interrupted, "But as soon as we actually got here, not seeing you for what, eighty years? A century? We just had a different... reaction to you than what was anticipated. So..."
Damon continued, "What she's trying to say is we're sorry for being assholes and we wanna be family again." The corner of his mouth upturned ever so slightly, and I looked at Stefan with a smile too.
Stefan says, "You're not super pissed anymore?"
"No, not completely," Damon replies, "Well before we figured out the whole 'sired to Katherine' thing, yes, but after that it was kind of hard to be as mad at you."
"We realize now that you were compelled and controlled by this bitch over here," I nod at said bitch. "Damon and I can try to forgive and forget, so for the meantime even more of the blame can just be transferred to her. So brother, truce?"
Before Stefan can reply, Katherine interrupts, "Well la-di-da, the Salvatore's are a family again. Looks like you've lost your cruel little touch, haven't you, Gingy Vamp?"
Did she just call me 'Gingy?' I grab the hidden weapon, speed up to her and shove it into her stomach. She falls helplessly onto the couch.
"The term I prefer is 'redhead.' And I'll never lose my cruelty, deep down- especially towards you. Now Damon and I have a barbecue to attend, so Stefan?"
"Yes?"
I smirk, "I think you know what to do from here."
Damon leans down to Katherine's face, and she opens her shit-brown eyes from there contorted position to look up at him. "Sorry we can't stick around to torture you ourselves, but I think it's best if we let Stefan hash out his anger before we do.. Gonna need you alive if we're gonna find out why you're here."
Damon twists the stake in her stomach, earning a string of curses from her mouth, then we head out of the room. I grab my cobbler out of the fridge and meet Damon in his car, sliding the dessert onto the floor at my feet. Damon released a sigh.
"That felt so damn good," he smiled.
"Oh, I know. Now, put your game face on- it's time to expose a werewolf." I smirked, and cranked up the radio as we drove along to Jenna's. Just a few songs into the drive, she calls me. Damon turns down the music as I pick up the call.
"Hey, we're on our way."
"Okay, great. I just wanted to remind you that Elena's gonna be here with Caroline."
"Yeah, I know. What's the reminder for?"
She laughs, "I don't know. I guess it's an apology in advance for her behavior. And for being so bad to Stefan.. I see how she is, I really am sorry."
"Thanks, on Stefan's behalf. Just be nice to her, you're her family. Me on the other hand.. I can get away with it," I laugh.
"I'll be nice when she learns to stop flirting with her boyfriend's older brother. Seriously, what did my sister teach this girl?"
"Preach!" Damon yells into the phone. I shush him with a smile and go back to Jenna. "We'll deal with her when we get there. Which will be in five minutes, so I'll just go."
"Alright, I'll look for the shot glasses. See you soon!"
"Bye,"
Beep.
"I like Jenna," Damon says. "She seems to be the only one in that family with a working brain."
Laughing, "You like Jeremy too, remember?"
"Oh right. Poor kid... Maybe we should adopt him," he jokes. I laugh more at that and we pull up to the Gilbert house. I grab the cobbler and we walk in, no knocking needed.
"Party's here!" I greet, walking into the kitchen. Elena and Jenna are there, Elena blushing and Jenna with a serious look on her face.
"Good, you're here! Did you make that yourself?" Jenna asks me, then takes the cobbler and puts in the fridge. She hugs me lightly and goes to Damon, repeating the greeting.
"Yep! Figured the poor baking skills just runs in your family," I nod to Elena. Jenna laughs and Elena rolls her eyes, which then land on Damon.
"That shirt looks much better on you," she says. Jenna gives her a death glare and she shrugs.
Damon pulls me into his side and says, "I happen to think strongly otherwise." I smile towards Jenna. I'm pretty sure we're both thinking the same thing- maybe if Damon keeps recoiling, Elena will stop!
Mason comes in with glasses and a bottle of tequila. "Haha, good news! I found the shot glasses."
"That's my cue to exit," Elena grumbles, taking one last glance at Damon before bringing the potato chips outside.
"She seems to like you a little too much," Mason comments to Damon.
"Tell me about it," I say.
Mason pauses, then reaches out his hand to Damon, "We haven't met- Mason Lockwood."
Damon takes his hand and shakes, "Oh sure, yeah. Damon Salvatore."
Mason takes my hand, shaking it a bit lighter than Damon's, "Cara. Soon-to-be married to this guy."
"I know, I've heard great things about you both," he replies.
I tilt my head, "Oh really? That's weird, cause he's a dick." Mason and Jenna both laugh and Ric comes in. "Ooh, the expensive stuff! I like you already."
"I'm just happy to be invited," he smiled.
"Thank Ric, it was his idea," Jenna said.
"Really?"
"Yeah, I thought it'd be fun to meet one of Jenna's old high-school friends, ya know. Dig up some dirt," Rick smirked.
"Oh, I've got dirt," Mason replied.
Jenna protested, "Hey, I have no secrets! Just dirty, dirty shame."
We laughed and picked up our glasses, "To dirty shame!" Ric toasts.
"To dirty shame!"
We do the shots, then head into the dining room for food.
"I'll go tell the girls the food's ready," Ric volunteers.
"Be careful, I think I hurt Elena's feelings," Damon joked. "Anyways, I'm starved. Let's eat," he smiled, and we go onto the porch and take our seats. Ric brings Elena and Caroline in and they sit down, Caroline to my right and Elena to hers. Damon gets up to help Alaric with the burgers, and Caroline turns to me.
"So, how're you feeling?" I ask her. She did just become a vampire, gotta ask her how she's doing.
Caroline sighs, "I feel like I want to rip into someone's jugular. All. The. Time! On the other hand, my daylight ring is pretty!" She outstretches her right hand to me, showing off the pointer finger where her square-cut lapis lazuli ring in a low-set silver filigree setting, glints in the sun.
"Beautiful! It's a lot different than mine," I show her mine, that I wear on my right middle finger. My lapis stone has glints of gold in it, oval-cut with sharp points, and set in a high-rise filigree setting.
"That's gorg! I think I speak for the both of us when I say that they're much better than Stefan and Damon's," she laughs.
I smile. "Yeah, but I must say that I didn't have many design options for men's rings back in the day. They're much tackier now than they were in 1864!"
Elena rolls her eyes at our small talk. Jenna and Mason come in, carrying the condiments and whatnot, Damon and Ric just putting the burgers on the table.
"Bon appetit," I say with a smile. Damon sits down next to me, and we make up our burgers.
xX~*Laughs fly around the table, telling stories of travel, high school, and plain old life. We finish eating, and end up playing Pictionary in the living room.*~Xx
I put out two fingers.
"Two words," Ric repeats.
I make a film wheel out of my hands.
"It's a movie," Damon tells them. I tap my nose and begin to draw. Halfway through Jenna starts guessing, "Red Dawn!"
I shake my head, and started drawing a kit-kat next to the giant bag of blood on the canvas. How hard can this be?
"Red candy! Hot tamale!" Jenna continued.
"Chocolate!" Caroline yelled. I tap my nose.
"Blood and Chocolate," Mason said.
Ha, get it? Werewolf movie?! Haha
I handed the marker over to Damon with a smirk, "Nice job, Mason. I don't know about you guys, but I've never heard of 'Hot Tamale," I laugh at Jenna. She sticks her tongue out at me drunkenly.
Damon skips the little hints and goes right into the drawing. He first draws a dog on it's two hind legs, then a... skirt? Tutu!
"Puppy! Puppy with a tutu!" I guess. He draws music notes about the head, and and arrow gesturing the dog spinning.
"Hound dog! Ain't nothing but a hound dog!"
Mason sighs, "Dancing with Wolves."
Damon, you hilarious bastard!
"Mason wins again," I say, getting up to go to the kitchen. As I leave I hear Jenna's protests against D's artistic skills. I walk in to see Elena taking out my peach cobbler.
"Aunt Jenna's getting tipsy," I tell her.
"Will you stop plying her with alcohol?" she spits back.
"We're just having fun, you party-pooper."
She rolls her eyes, "How's operation Lockwood?"
I hop on the counter, "Great. He's Damon's new BFF. Speak of the devil," Dammon comes in along with the tipsy Aunt, and kisses me sweetly on the lips.
"Aww," Jenna says, then turns to Elena, "There you are! You're missing all the fun!"
Elena gives her aunt a look, then hands her a silver pie server. I spot the rest of the set behind her,
"Oooh, those look fancy," I say.
"Thanks! My mother's silver set," Jenna replies. I give Damon a look, and he slips one of the larger knives into his jeans. I hop off the counter. "Here, I'll take it in." Jenna smiles and hands me the dessert, and I walk it into the dining room along with my beer.
"Mason, why don't you start us off?" I set the dish down in front of him, the silver handle peeking right out.
"Sure." To mine, and everyone else's surprise, Mason spins the dish around and takes out a piece with his bare hands. "Oh, I apologize. I'm an animal!"
I sit down with hooded eyes, peering at him. That sneaky prick. Damon sits next to me, and gives me the same look I'm giving Mason- this one is to be messed with.
"So, you and Jenna never dated?" Ric asked openly.
Mason chuckled. "No, she was way too lost in 'Logan Fell Land!'"
"Ohh, my first mistake." Jenna drawled. "Mason was a catch- he had girls lining up!"
Damon tilts his head, "Oh really? Huh, I sorta pegged you for a lone wolf." I stifle a laugh.
Mason sipped his beer, "I'm sure I wasn't half the lady killer you were." Oooh, touché! Mason clears his throat, "How about a toast? To new friends." We all clink our bottles together. "Cheers!" We finish our drinks and I go into the kitchen to do some dishes, Damon following me in with some empty bottles in hand.
We're almost done cleaning when Mason comes in, "Jenna just brought out Guitar Hero- might be time for mutiny."
I got out a glass and the bottle of tequila, pouring myself a shot. "Well I happen to like Guitar Hero, so you my friend are barking up the wrong tree." I downed the shot and high-fived Damon.
"Okay, enough with the innuendos, you win- you're both hilarious."
"Thank you."
"Cummon, you don't think I know what this barbecue is all about?" Mason leans into Damon, and he scowls.
"How do you know about us? Your brother is completely clueless," he asks.
"That doesn't matter. I'm not your enemy, Damon."
"I heard you tried to kill my brother," he spat. I poured him a shot and he took it, then we tried to go into the living room but Mason stopped us.
"That was a mistake!"
I scoff, "Really."
"There was confusion, I couldn't chain myself up in time. I have no control once I shift,"
"What, no obedience school?" I tease.
Mason sighs, "I'm serious. Let's not spark some ancient feud that doesn't apply to us."
"Do you expect us to believe you're in Mystic Falls just to plant peace trees?" Damon said.
"I lost my brother, my nephew lost his father- I'm here for my family. Let's be above this."
D thought a sec, then reached out and shook his hand. Mason nodded and walked out of the room, then once he was gone I open the drawer to Grandma Gilbert's silver set and pull out a knife.
"We'll get him later." I tell Damon. He smiles and takes the shot,
"You read my mind, woman."
xX~Two Songs, Two Shots, and Two Hours Later~Xx
I overhear Mason asking for drinks at the Grill, and getting rejected.
"This was fun, Jenna, gotta do it again sometime. Ric- can't wait to catch that game next weekend!"
"Yeah, alright man. See ya," Ric says, then the door shuts.
I Damon and I walk out next to the stairs."Hey, we really should be getting home, check on that little bro," I say to Jenna. I give her a hug, "You are a wonderful hostess."
"And terrible at Pictionary," Damon adds. She laughs and punches his chest.
"Ric, you seriously need to apply for art teacher next year!" I laugh, hugging him too.
He and Damon fist-bump. "Let's not catch that game next weekend," Damon teases him. We smile and head out.
Getting in the car, Damon hands me the silver knife. "We can get him at the Grill," he suggests.
"Perfect- but you can do the deed. I'll just wait in the car and text Stefan," I tell him. Damon gives me a weird look.
"Since when are you the type to sit in the car?"
"I'm not. Just think of it as my gift to you," I smile. He shakes his head, confused, and we park behind the Grill. I take out my phone and text Stefan-
Taking care of a werewolf. Be home in a few. How's the torture working?
I watch as Damon gets out and meets Mason in the middle of the back lot. Mason crumples to the hard ground when Damon shoves the knife through his gut. Then just as- ooh Stef replied:
She wont tell me y shes rly here- but im having fun ! get here quick i think shes gonna spill it soon
Good thing Damon's done with Buster over there- he can come help me teach the little brother how to spell! Freaking teenagers. Damon slids back into the driver's seat.
"Did you hear that? 'You've made an enemy.' Oh, like I'm scared of a stupid mutt," he laughed. He pulls out onto the main road to get us home.
"Yeah, let's just be careful come full moon," I warn him. "Step on it- Stefan wants us to be there for Katherine's approaching confession." Damon nods, "Alright babe." He floors it and we speed to our house. A fifteen-minute ride turned into fife, we go in and head for the cellar. We lean in the doorway when Stefan has just said something, now hearing Katherine's response.
"Have you not heard a word that I've said? I've answered that question five times over now," she says, throat raw.
"Make it six," I spit at her. She sighs, and answers without explanation.
"I want what I want, and I don't care what I have to do to get it. My list of victims is a long one and I have no problem adding one more name to that list."
Stefan scoffs, "If you wanted Elena dead you would've done it by now."
"I still can. I will snap her neck like a twig if I have to, and you know it," she growls. Stefan stops furiously pacing and loses it, ripping a leg of the wooden chair and going to stake her in the heart. But he stops, knowing it's not the right thing to do. Trust me, it takes a lot of strength not to kill her at sight. But to figure out what's going on, why she's here- she can't be dead.
"I don't want you with Elena anymore," Katherine tells him. "And if you don't stop seeing her, I will kill everyone she loves while she watches. Then I'll kill her while you watch." Stefan tries to go at her again, but she breaks free from the chain and cuffs he's set her up in and goes after him. I catch her before she does and break her arms behind her back.
"I know vervain doesn't affect you, Katherine. I knew you used to watch in wonder as I sipped it in the mornings back in 1864- although a clueless whore, you were smart enough to copy me." She struggles in my grasp and I yank her fake curls back. "Now I hope you've enjoyed your quality time with Stefan, but it's time for you to-"
"Stefan?" My attention is caught by Elena entering upstairs. Katherine takes this opportunity to break free, kicking me into the wall with her five-inch heel and speeding up the stairs.
"Argh," I groan. Stefan followed her upstairs but Damon came to my side,
"You alright? Let me see how deep," He lifted my blouse up to see the centimeter-wide hole right above my bellybutton healing extremely slowly.
"What a great day to not have consumed any blood," I chuckle and reach for Damon's wrist, hoping for the boost it'll give me. I sing my fangs into his sweet flesh, drinking greedily from the vein.
"Slow down," Damon cooed, "There's no rush to get upstairs. Why interfere with the teen drama?" I let go of his wrist and grabbed his hand and he helped me onto my feet. Damon pulls me into him by the hips and kisses my neck softly.
"You know what? Let's go to bed. I'm tired, I just wanna spend the night alone with you," I sigh. D squeezes my waist then pulls away from my neck.
"I'll carry you to bed." Before reasoning, he lifts my waist up and I instinctively wrap my legs around his waist. He kisses my lips tenderly and walks me up the stairs, where we see Stefan and Elena slip through the front door, out into the dark world. I smile at Damon, "No more drama for the night, looks like."
Damon smiles politely back at me. "We better enjoy it,"
"Well I was until you made it a sexual thing!" I interrupt him. Can we have maybe just one night to cuddle and go to sleep? It doesn't happen that often, but tonight I'd much rather sleep with Damon than sleep with Damon.
We get into our bedroom and Damon sets me down on the bed gently, I wasn't making it a sexual thing! I'm too tired to bang you into the mattress, babe. Sorry."
Laughing, "You know just what I need? A good night's cuddle and some sleep." I get up off the bed and start stripping down, Damon doing the same and getting into bed with just boxers saying, "I'm in. Hurry up I'm getting cold," he whines. I finally unclip my bra and slide on a simple cotton nighty that comes just over my bum and then I slide off my panties and put on a clean pair for tomorrow. I turn off the light and take advantage of my vampire super-speed to get back to bed, sliding in and curling myself up into Damon's chest. His hand finds my stomach and he rests it in the tiny creases of my chub.
"You're getting too skinny," he whispers.
"Sure I am," I reply. Skinny? Me? I've never been skinny in my whole life! Always ten pounds overweight, no matter how hard I tried in my afterlife- I just have a weird metabolism I guess.
Damon squeezes the ever-so-small fat on my stomach with his thumb and forefinger, "There's nothing for me to hoooold," he whines.
I turn around and push him lightly onto his back and snuggle myself into his chest, tangling my left leg with his. His arm comes around my back, as I predicted, so I take his hand and rest it on my round ass.
"Hold this for me, then. Okay? Night." I close my eyes and wish for sleep to come. I hear his laugh rumble in his chest, and D pulls the blanket over my shoulder while kissing my head.
"Goodnight, Red."
A/N: No funky-business there at the end! Haha :) Well, I know it's been a while so I'm really sorry.
