Rose: Stefan, Damon and Cara come to Elena's assistance and, in the process, learn surprising new information about people, vampires and events in the distant past, things that aren't what they wanted to hear. Jeremy helps Bonnie after a difficult spell.

XxxX

"Hey, Stefan," Jeremy called to the young Salvatore and stops him in the middle of the hallway at Mystic Falls High. "So I'm happy for you and Elena and all, but next time let me know if she's staying the night because-"

"Wait wait," Stefan interrupted. "She didn't come over last night- I didn't even see her after the ball."

Jeremy's brows pulled together. "Well I didn't hear her this morning and her bed didn't look slept in.."

"Where could she be?" Stefan muttered. Concerned with the situation, he finds Bonnie. Alaric lends them his classroom so Bonnie can preform a location spell on Elena, figuring with all that's going on she could be kidnapped. As soon as Alaric heard this news, he called Damon to let him and Cara know what was happening. Back in the classroom, Bonnie laid out a map, and lit some candles.

"So how's this work?" Jeremy asked the witch.

"I'll use your blood to draw the energy for the tracking spell. Since you're related, it'll make the connection stronger." Jeremy nodded, and Bonnie sliced his palm with a kitchen knife. Jeremy put his hand over the area of Mystic Falls on the map, letting crimson droplets mark the town. Bonnie began her hushed spell, and the droplets on the map conjoined, moving south and a bit west to the town of Reidsville.

"There," Bonnie said. "She's there."

"Bonnie that's three hundred miles away, it's gotta be more specific," Stefan said.

Bonnie sighed, "That's as close as I can get."

"We can scan the area, look for any abandoned places or sketchy stuff like that," Jeremy suggested.

"Yes, perfect! Call me with your results," Stefan said, then grabbed his coat and the bag of weapons Alaric gave him.

Jeremy grabbed his jacket as well and followed Stefan to the door where he was stopped.

"No," Stefan told him. "You and Bonnie go back to your house and try to get in contact with Elena. I'm doing this alone."

Before Jeremy could protest Damon steps in the room, Cara behind him. "No you're not."

Stefan asked, surprised, "You're coming?"

"You're not going alone and Little Gilbert sure isn't coming along," Damon replied. Jeremy decided not to pick this fight, even though he wished to help find his sister. As they leave the school and get into Damon's car, Cara lets Stefan ride shotgun and she lays with her feet crossed over the other half of the back seat, laying her head on on the window.

x.230 miles later.x

Cara fiddled with the bag Stefan had thrown in the back seat, pulling out some liquid bomb. "Ric sure likes his weapons."

Damon glanced in his rear view and sees the thing in Cara's hands. "The hell is that?" he asked.

"I think it's some sort of vervain grenade/launcher/bomb thing," she guessed.

"Hey how much farther is is?" Stefan asked.

Damon sighed, "'Bout eighty miles."

"Who do you think took her?"

Cara leaned forward from the back, leaning her elbows on the rest between the seats. "I'm not sure, but definitely someone from Katherine's past. She said she was running from someone- that someone just got the wrong hoe."

Stefan glared at Cara. "Sorry, I mean girl."

"Thank you, both. For coming with me," Stefan said.

Damon rolled his eyes. "Can we no do the whole road-trip, brotherly bonding thing? The cliche of it all makes me itch."

"Ohh, come on Damon. We both know that you're not in this car for me." Stefan stated plainly. "So why are you suddenly interested in saving Elena?"

Cara sighed and laid back down in the backseat.

Damon turned to his brother and looked him in the eyes, "When we were going to leave Katherine in the tomb, she said something. About, how Elena was in danger and that whoever was after her wanted Cara, too. She seemed pretty scared of whoever that was, and I want to find out before they try to take Cara."

Stefan looked bewildered. "What kind of connection could Cara and Elena possibly have to whoever this is?"

Cara groaned. "I have no idea."

.

Elena has woken up, groggy and disoriented, and tried to survey her surroundings. She was in a large house, fitted with white walls and marble floors. She heard to people, a British man and woman. She got up slowly and followed the voices.

"How's she now?" asked the woman.

"Still passed out."

"You didn't touch her, did you?"

The man scoffed. "Give me some credit, Rose. So you called him?"

"No, I called one of the contacts. You know how it works."

He sounded frustrated now. "Did you, or did you not get the message to Elijah?"

She sighed. "They say he got it."

"Wonderful, and what?"

"So that's it, Trevor. He either got it or he didn't. We just have to wait." Elena crept up behind the door frame to get a peek at the two strangers. The woman, Rose, wore her hair short, a dark brown color. The man, Trevor, had longer, light brown hair with an unshaven face.

Trevor rambled excitedly. "Look, it's not too late! We don't have to go through with this, we could just leave her here and-"

"I'm sick of running!" Rose exclaimed.

"Yeah? Well running keeps us from getting killed!"

"Elijah's old school- if he accepts our deal, he'll set us free... You!" Rose caught Elena and turned the corner, striding toward the hurt girl.

"If you're think you're getting out of this house, you're tragically wrong. Understand?"

Elena stood her ground. "Who's Elijah?"

"He's your worst nightmare," she said simply, then walked away. Elena followed her.

"Why am I here?"

She scoffed and kept moving things around the room she walked in. "You keep asking me these questions like I'm going to answer them."

Elena crossed her arms, "Why won't you?"

"That's another one," she sang.

Elena rolled her eyes and let out a very teenager-y sigh. "Okay, you got me. It's not like I'm going anywhere so the least you can do is tell me what you want with me."

"Personally, I want nothing, I'm just a delivery service. And a wimpy one at that- you were the easier one to get a hold of, you know."

Elena approached her. "Delivery to who? Elijah? And what do you mean 'easier one?' Who else do you want to get to him?"

Rose laughed,"Two points to the eavesdropper."

Elena continued. "Who else does he want? Who is he, a vampire?"

"He's one of the vampires, the Originals."

Elena's brows furrowed. "What do you mean, the Originals?"

"Again with the questions! Haven't the Salvatores been teaching you vampire history? My resources tell me that Damon's Mrs. is quite old. She must know about the Originals, if they want her so terribly bad. Apparently she's more valuable than you, doppelganger. Though I don't think it's Elijah who seeks her."

Elena uncrossed her arms. "So you know Stefan and Cara, too?"

"I know of them. A hundred years back a friend of mine tried to set me up with Stefan... She said he was one of the good ones. More of a sucker for the bad boys though, but as you probably know Cara's got Damon locked in her traps."

Elena rolled her eyes again, thinking of her dislike of the woman. She changed the subject out of spite and curiosity. "Who are the Originals?"

Rose finally stopped what she was doing and turned to Elena. "Trevor and I have been running for five hundred years. We're tired and we want it over. We're using you to negotiate ourselves out of an old mess."

"But why me?" Elena asked. "And why Cara? What's she have to do with this?"

"Because you're the Petrova doppelganger. You're the key to breaking the curse. As for Cara, I have no idea. When I met her she seemed harmless- spunky, and old, but harmless. It's rumored that she's powerful... more powerful than any of the Originals. But what she has to do with the curse? I don't know."

Elena's eyes went wide. "The curse? The... sun and the moon curse? And why would Cara be so powerful? I know she's really old but-"

"Like I said I don't know. And it seems you do know your history," Rose stated with annoyance.

Elena waled up to Rose, now face to face. "Well what do you mean I'm the key? The moonstone's what breaks the curse."

"No," Rose said. "The moonstone is what binds the curse- sacrifice is what breaks it."

"Sacrifice?"

Rose nodded her head, like she was talking to a four year old. "Yes, sacrifice. The blood of the doppelganger. You're the doppelganger. Which means in order to break the curse, you're the one that has to die."

Elena stood there, still processing what she's just been told. I'm the one who needs to be sacrificed. The Originals need me... and Cara. Why Cara? How is she so powerful, is that the only reason they want her? And if Elijah doesn't want her, than who does? What's her part in breaking of the curse?

.

Bonnie dropped her bag on the desk in Jeremy's room. "Alaric just left with Jenna," she told Jeremy. She sat on the bed next to him and he showed her something on his phone.

"He's getting her out of the house for a while so she doesn't ask questions about Elena," he explained rapidly. "Look this is the place I found. I searched that town you found on the map and there was nothing but this old house for miles."

"Did you send it to Stefan?" Bonnie asked.

"Yep... I just, I hate sitting here waiting like this," Jeremy sighed. Bonnie pu her hand on his back soothingly.

"Hey, she's gonna be fine."

Jeremy sighed. "You don't know that."

"No.. I don't." She paused, then got up to hr bag and pulled out Emily's grimoire.

"What are you doing?"

"There's something else I wanna try. Grab Elena's hairbrush and some candles!"

"Oh- Okay," Jeremy rushed to get the items, and Bonnie scribbled something on a piece of notebook paper and crumpled it up. Jeremy came back with the candle and hair brush, and Bonnie lit the candle, and help the brush in one hand while the other lay open palmed faced up with the paper in her hand. She mumbled a chant, and her nose started to drip with blood.

"Bonnie!" Jeremy tried to stop her, but Bonnie continued, and the paper disintegrated in her hand. She mumbled before she collapsed onto the bed, unconscious;

"I got her a message.." Then the young witch's mind went black.

.

Elena followed Rose into the next room where Trevor was.

"Tell me more," she demanded. Rose stayed silent, clearly over Elena's questions.

"Captivity's made her pushy, eh?" Trevor teased. "Whaddaya wanna know, Doppelicious?"

"Who are you running from?"

"The Originals."

Elena rolled her eyes. "Yeah, she said that, what does that mean?"

"The first family. The old world. Rose and I pissed them off." Rose glared at Trevor. "Correction- I pissed them off, Rose had my back, and for over half a millennium they wanted us dead."

Elena tilted her head. "What did you do?"

"He made the same mistake countless others did," Rose said. "He trusted Katerina Petrova."

"Katherine," Elena muttered.

"Mm, the one and only," Rose added. "The first Petrova doppelganger."

Trevor turned to Elena to elaborate. "I helped her escape her fate. And now I've -sorry, we've- been chased ever since."

"Which is why were not going to make the same mistake again!" Rose yelled to him.

.

"Getting close," Stefan said. "Jeremy said there was an access road just past mile marker six." Damon nodded and reach back for Cara to hand him a blood bag. He took the pouch gratefully and drank from the plastic tube. Stefan eyed it, and Cara detached from her own bag to comment.

"If you want some, just ask," she teased.

He turned back to Cara with his hand out. "I want some."

Damon smiled, "Aww that's so sweet- wanna be all big and strong to save your girl. Don't worry we've got your back, it'll be fine."

"I wasn't joking. I've been drinking a little everyday, like Cara said," Stefan told them. "Slowly increasing my intake and building up my strength." Cara smiled and handed him a bag of O+.

"Does Elena know about you drinking blood?" she asked.

Stefan paused. "I've been drinking hers."

"How romantic." Cara said blankly.

"You know, since we're doing the whole 'road trip bonding' thing, remember the days where all you lived for was blood? Partied all day and night drinking off strangers, and despite the horror of it all, ripped people to shred just for the fun of it?" Damon mentioned. Cara and Stefan both slightly flinched at the thought of being a Ripper. Not good times at all. But the care-free-ness Stefan used to carry was very much missed by the soon-to-be (yet already, in heart) Salvatore.

"You mean when I was more like you," Stefan said.

Damon looked at him. "Yes, exactly! What happened to that guy? He was a hoot. But the other part of that guy? The one who forced ME to drink the blood, wanted e to be all big and strong- you think Elena would be so willing to over her veins for him?"

Stefan paused, taken aback my this comment. He pushed it to the back of his mind. "I've found something else to live for, like you. I haven't changed all that much when it comes to our similarities, have I?"

Cara nodded, and Damon as well

.

Elena, finally satisfied with the knowledge she's gathered from her captors, goes back to the couch where she'd woken up hours ago. When she sits down, she feels something at her feet. It was a note, and it hadn't been there before. It read in familiar script:

Stefan, Damon and Cara are coming for you. -B

She clutched the note from her beloved witch friend, now filled with hope. But is it safe for Cara to come here?

Rose comes into the room, gathering their things. Trevor runs in feverishly.

"He's here! This was a mistake!" he panics.

Rose replies very calmly. "No, I told you I'd get us out of this, now you have to trust me."

"No! He wants me DEAD, Rose!"

"He wants her more-"

Trevor interrupts her. "I can't do this, you give her to him he'll have mercy on you but I need to get out of here!" Elena is taken aback by Trevor's fear.

"Hey!" Rose stops Trevor and grabs his arms. "What are we?"

He takes a deep breath, calming down. "We're family... forever."

There' a loud knock on the door.

"Stay here, and don't make a sound," Rose says. They do what their told and Rose goes up the stairs to greet the ancient vampire. Elijah is revealed at the front door, with a strong, square jaw and chisled cheeks in an all black suit. His dark brown hair falling over his forehead, grazing the top on his eyes.

"Rosemary, is there somewhere we can talk?" Elijah's voice is deep, a hint of an accent, with a sense of knowledge that nobody could ever know.

Rosepauses, still in shock over the fact that they're finally face to face. "Yes, in here. You must forgive the house."

"Oh, what's a little dirt. I completely understand," he replies, closing the door shut. "So tell me, what is it that gives you the courage to call me?"

"I wanted my freedom. I'm tired of running.. would you be in a position to grant me that?'

"I have complete authority to grant pardon to you and your little pet -what is his name? ah, Trevor- if I so see fit."

"Katerina Petrova," Rose started. This caught Elijah's attention.

"Go on."

"She didn't burn in the fire in 1864."

"Where is she?" he replied coolly.

"You don't seem surprised by this?"

Elijah inhaled sharply. "Well when you called and invited me into this armpit of civilization, which is a mere three hours from the town we know as Mystic Falls, I assumed it had everything to do with Katerina. Or quite possibly that Salvatore girl, though it wouldn't make sense for you to deliver her to me... she's my brother's interest. Do you have her in your possession?"

"Cara Ann? No. But which brother is so intrigued by her? Surely the things I hear are rumors."

Elijah stands and raises his voice slightly. "It is none of your business who wants her or what my brother wants to do with her. You have no right to ask. Now, do you have Katerina with you?"

Rose was surprised that Elijah snapped like that, breaking his cool, hard shell. "No, but I have something better. Her doppelganger."

"That's impossible," Elijah stated. "Her family line ended with her, I know that for a fact."

"Then your facts are wrong."

"Well show her to me," he said simply.

Rose approached him. "Elijah, you are a man of honor, surely to be trusted... But I want to hear you say it again."

He paused. "You have my word that I will pardon you."

"Follow me."

Elijah follows Rose up the stairs to see the room Elena and Trevor reside in. When he catches the first glimpse of Elena, he speeds down right in front of her. Elena's heart beats rapidly and he leans down to her neck, taking a quick sniff.

"Human...That's impossible..." he says. Elijah meets Elena's eyes with a devious smirk. "Hello there."

Just in the back of the house, Damon parks the Camaro and they all step out, Stefan carrying the bag of weapons and striding confidently towards the house.

"Hold up, I've got a little more experience with you in this sort of thing," Damon says.

Stefan turns to him. "So, what's that supposed to mean?"

Cara jogs ahead. "Meaning, this person is probably the same person who was after Katherine in 1864, and before that. Most likely this guy's wanting something to do with me, too. AKA he or she ahs gotta be over 500 years old- you sure you want to mess with that? You can barely keep me in a full nelson."

"I'm sure. It's Elena," Stefan replies.

Damon sighs, "Because if you go in that house you might not come out."

"Alright then I won't come out."

Cara rolls her eyes. "Soo noble, Stef."

"I can't think of a better reason to die. But if you guys wanna stay here I'll totally understand. After all to you Elena's just a hoe."

Stefan stomps off but Cara and Damon follow in his trail.

XxxX

"We have a long way ahead of us, we should get going," Elijah says to Elena.

"Please, don't let him take me!" she cries.

"One last piece of business, and we're done." Elijah tells her, then turns to Trevor and walks up to him, face to face.

"I've waited so long for this day, Elijah. I'm truly, very sorry."

"Oh, you're apology is not necessary," Elijah says simply, circling the terrified vampire.

"Yes, it is," Trevor continues, voice wavering. "You trusted me with Katerina, and I failed you."

"I guess, you are the guilty one. Rose aided you because she was loyal to you and that, now, I honor." Elijah stops circling and looks Trevor in the eye. "Where was your loyalty?"

Trevor silently sobs. "I beg your forgiveness,"

"And so it is granted." With a swift movement Elijah slices his head over, bare handed. Rose screams in anguish.

"You! You-"

"Don't, Rose. Now that you are free," he warned. Rose cried over her friend's decapitated body. Elijah strode back to Elena. "Come."

"What about Cara and the moonstone?" Elena stammered fearfully. In her state of terror she didn't care that she'd given away her knowledge of two other things the Original wanted.

"What do you know about Cara Ana?" He replied harshly, speaking the woman's name in a tongue unheard by the teenager. Something from.. the old world.

"I-I know that you need her, a-and I know where she is..the moonstone, t-too."

"Yes?" Elijah said expectantly.

"I c-can help you get it. I d-don't know about C-Cara, though.." Elena trails off, uncertain about actually giving her away. She may hate the ady, but Damon loves her and if she hurt Cara would Damon ever forgive her?

"Tel me where they are." Elijah demands.

Elena straightens herself out. "It doesn't work that way."

"Are you-? Is she trying to negotiate with me?" Elijah turns to Rose.

"It's the first I've heard of it," she says.

Elijah tries to compel her, but soon notices her necklace. He rips it free and throws it across the room. "What is this vervain doing around your neck? Tell me where the moonstone is," he compells.

"It's in the tomb under the church."

"And what's it doing there?"

"It's with Katherine."

Elijah sighs. "Interesting.. Where-"

Before Elijah could ask about Cara, he feels other vampires in the house. "Who else is here?"

"I don't know!" Rose shouts. Elijah takes Elena's arm violently and calls Rose to come along with them. They reach the common living area and a vampire speends around them, Elijah only seeing a blur of red. He can't believe his eyes. He throws Elena to the ground, now in fighting stance, when another blur of black whooshes pass him. They're taunting him.

"Up here," Cara whispers. Elijah speed to the top of the stairs to find the woman, wondering if it's truly her.

"Down here," Damon taunts. The Original speeds back down hallway on the the steps. He's shot with a mini stake, through the hand. HE looks down, pulling it out without a flinch, and when his gaze returns to the floor, Elena and Rose are gone. Stefan had taken Elena behind the wall, telling her to be quiet.

"Cara Ann!" Elijah yells. "If that's you, please come down here!" Cara laughs and it echos through the house. Elijah, now angry, calls out again. "To whom it may concern, you've made a great mistake! If you think you can beat me, you can't. You hear that?"

Cara has taken Rose into a corner, telling her to hush up as well.

"And Cara! If that's truly you, you shouldn't know who I am- but know that you are safe with me. As for the rest of you, I want the girl!" Elijah rips a tall wood candlestick from the floor, making it into a large stake. "And I want her in thee, or heads will roll. Do we understand each other?"

Elena comes out, alone and pleads. "Please, I'll go with you. Just don't hurt my friends. They just wanted to help me out."

Elijah speeds up the stares, obviously seeing through her act. "What game are you playing with me?" Elena rips the key out of the grenade and ducks as glass and vervain fill the air, blinding the Original. He lets out screams filled with pain, but heals quickly, striding up to her. Stefan comes out quickly with a stake launcher and powers at Elijah, each stake hitting him somewhere in the gut, but the Original keeps coming. Stefan then tackles him and they tumble down the stairs, Damon coming out with another weapon and fires at him. This does nothing, and when Damon runs out of ammo Elijah goes at him. Cara, watching from the shadows, comes out and grab the giant slice of wood, stabbing Elijah in the heart and pushing him back until the stake plunges through the wall, hanging him there. As the dried veins creep up Elijah's neck, he says his last words.

"Cara Ana... it's you."

Rose creeps back out, and shock fills her face when she sees that Cara has killed an Original. She believes all the rumors she's heard, now. She runs. Elena tells her to just let Rose go. Damon and Stefan get up, and Elena comes down the stairs, hugging Stefan. Cara runs to Damon and throws her arms around his neck.

"Did you hear what he called me? He knew me, Day..." she whispered into his neck.

Damon hold her tight. "I know.. We'll figure this out, I promise."

.

Caroline walked into the living room with a bottle of scotch and two glasses, pouring one for her and another for Tyler. "Alcohol helps at least for me. You know with all that inside, jitery stuff?" Tyler nods, taking the glass and sipping the harsh liquid.

"I'm hot. It's like my skin is on fire," he says.

"Really?" Caroline replies. "I never had any of that. Guess wolves are different." Tyler nods. "At the beginning," she continues, "I was very, very emotional. Everything was heightened."

"I have that." Tyler racks his brain for a minute, before asking the question that'd been bouncing around in hi head for over an hour now. "How can you be a vampire?"

Caroline holds her breath, letting it out with a contradicting question. "How can you be a werewolf?"

Tyler gets up, playing the question game once again. "Who else is like you?"

"Just me," she lies. "It's a really long story, we can share another time.. uh, how many other werewolves are there?"

Tyler sets down his glass and crosses his arms. "Just me. And my uncle Mason, but... he left town."

Caroline nods knowingly. "Look, Tyler- you can't tell anyone. Okay? Not about you, nto about me... no one wil understand."

He sighs. "I know."

"I wanna tell you, about my mom and yours.. and the founding families and the Council but I need you to promise me, no one will find out about us. This is life and death, Tyler."

"I have no one else to tell. I'm sorry, about earlier... It's just, I'm alone with this. It's gonna happen to me... on the next full moon, I'm going to turn, and there's no way for me to stop it." he pauses. "I'm scared." He looks down, ashamed, and Caroline pulls him into a hug. She wants to help him with this... but she's scared too. A bite from a werewolf can kill a vampire, after all.

.

Cara pour herself and Damon a glass of bourbon, and hand it to him as he gets up from the couch. Stefan walks in.

"Where's Elena?" Cara asks.

"At home.. She wanted to be with Jeremy," he explained. Cara nods and starts to head upstairs with Damon. "Hey," Stefan stopped them. "I'm sorry."

"About what?" Damon sighs.

"For being the guy who made you turn a hundred and forty-five years ago."

Damon rolled his eyes. "Enough, Stef."

Cara intruded. "It's late, we don't need to rehash that,"

"You know what I've never said it out loud," Stefan interrupted. "I guess I need to say it and you both need to hear it. It wasn't my decision to make and I'm sorry. What I did was selfish, and I didn't want to be alone... I guess I just need you two."

Damon leaves with a lingering look on his brother, and Cara stays, giving Stefan a small smile before following her one and only upstairs.

XxxX

Stefan comes downstairs for another glass of alcohol, but someone whooshes by him. He quickly grabs a stake from a table drawer nearby. "Who's there?"

Rose comes out of the hall. "I'm not here to hurt you."

"Why are you here?"

"Lexi once told me you're one of the good ones,"

"You knew Lexi?" Stefan asked her.

Rose steps down to the parlor. "Trevor was my best friend. For five hundred years I have lived with one person... and he's gone. And I don't want to run anymore because I have no one else to run to."

"I'm sorry but I can't help you," Stefan tells her.

"I don't need your help," she says. "But I think you need mine. Elijah may be dead but this isn't over."

Stefan's brows pull together. "What do you mean it isn't over?"

"The Originals. They will come for her.. Cara as well. They have to- you heard, Elijah knew her. And I've figured it out. They're doing it for him." Rose stated.

"Who?" Stefan asked.

"Klaus."

.

Back at the house in Reidsville, Elijah hangs on the wall. Slowly, but surely, the veins in his body disappear and color floods his body. He lifls his head and yanks out the makeshift stake ith a menancing glare on his face. The Original is alive.
