Chapter 34- Chimeric Beasts vs. the Evolving Falcon
"My turn! I summon Edge Imp Saw!" Sora announced, summoning a new monster to the field. I stood up and stood beside Yuya, who was also looking down, frowning. It had been subtle but Sora's air had definitely changed. He wasn't trying to be cutesy or impress the audience. The slight sneer and the downturned eyebrows would be easily missed by someone in the crowd. But not by me. The person standing down there wasn't the Sora we knew.
But was he a fake Sora? Or was he the real Sora, flagging his true colours?
The thing was, none of us had any idea. He may be our friend but, thinking deeper, we knew virtually nothing about him! He had introduced himself to us at LDS and had, well, stalked us until he became our friend. He knew our secrets and he knew our troubles. But did we know anything about him? Not a clue.
Where he came from? No idea. Where he lives? No idea. What he does outside of school? No idea. But after becoming his friend we managed to, well, look past all that. Did we forget? Or did we just deem it as unimportant? Now, I just sorely wished I knew what was going on inside his head because, frankly, that little evil grin of his made my stomach plummet to the floor.
"Yuya?" I turned to my friend, who had his eyes glued on Sora like a hawk tracking its prey. I glanced over to the duel, to see that due to Sora summoning that monster, he was allowed to draw two cards from his hand.
"What is it?" Yuya questioned, not even looking up at me, as he lifted his hands and placed them on the railing, squeezing tight.
"N-nothing…" I muttered, turning my concentration back to the duel.
"I activate the Magic Card: Fusion Conscription from my hand!" Sora smiled. "I can call a Fusion Material Monster from my deck to my hand!" He pulled the card out and stared down at it, inspecting it and then gave another malicious smirk. I gulped, wondering if Sora was aware how terrifying his face looked.
"Your attention please!" he suddenly called, waving his arms in the air. "Make sure the spotlight is only on me!" The technicians scrambled to meet the boys request and I wondered if I was just being paranoid. It was probably Sora cracking slightly under the stress of having his ace monster wiped out like nothing.
"I activate the Continuous Magic: Des-Toy Factory from my hand!" he declared. "I can banish one Fusion card in my graveyard in order to Fusion summon a Des-Toy Fusion Monster! I'm going to fuse Edge Imp Claw and Furnimal Lion in my hand! Fusion summon! Des-Toy Wheel Saw Lion!"
I shuddered as Sora's new monster emerged. I didn't know whether it was new or not but if one thing was for sure, it made Des-Toy Scissor Bear look harmless. It was only stronger by 200 attack points, making its attack 2400. But this monster was hideous. Its face had a horrible black void cut straight down the middle. Its eyes were black and red and had a manic look about them and its mouth was twisted into a large, cruel, gaping smile, displaying sharp, shining red teeth.
Kurosaki surveyed the crowd (full of screaming, terrified kids) for a second, gazed at Sora's monster and, too everyone's surprise, took off in a jog.
"What's this?" Sora taunted, as Kurosaki began distancing himself. "Are you scared?"
Ruri's brother jumped and latched onto one of his XYZ monster's talons and took to the skies, not replying to Sora's comment.
"You can't escape…" Sora whispered. "I activate Saw Lion's effect! Once per turn, I can destroy one of my opponent's monsters and deal its attack points as damage!"
The attack was displayed in many yellow disks being created and following Kurosaki, flying through the air. The Falcon increased in speed and the chase began, as they temporarily vanished under a bridge and appeared at the other side, only to vanish behind some tall buildings.
I turned my viewings to the Duel Screens, which broadcasted small cameras hidden throughout the Action Field. I gasped as Kurosaki let go of his monster and hurtled towards the ground. "Action Magic! Mirror Barrier! It negates an effect that would destroy a monster!" He landed gracefully on top of the Falcon's back and negated the attack.
Sora's monster was then trapped in a massive concrete-like box, making it create a grating scream that made my knees knock together. Sora ordered the monster to break through, which it did but then it began to destroy all of the surrounding Action Field Buildings. "Sorry, cats just don't like being out of the spotlight." He shrugged.
"You did well trying to protect it with Action Cards but too bad!" Sora sneered, his face contorting back to a mask of… Whatever the heck that creepy smile was. "You can't run away from the king of Beasts who shred's all!"
"Wheel Saw Lion! Attack Rise Falcon!" Sora screeched.
"Trap activate!" Kurosaki countered, still standing hovering on his Falcon. "Adversity! When a monster I control is attacked by a monster with higher attack points, I take no damage and my monster isn't destroyed and its attack is risen by 1000."
"What!?" Sora hissed. This was the first time I had seen Sora like this. His attacks being blocked, him desperate to attack, it was almost as if he was on a completely different thinking spectrum to normal. Or what I knew as normal. "Dammit! I'll definitely get you next time!" Not cool and collected like normal. He wasn't playing his usual mind games, drawing out the duel and playing with his opponent. He was trying to get this duel over as quickly as possible. "I end my turn!" he snapped.
"Sora's usually so laid back," Yuya said, his face covered in shock.
I nodded in agreement, quickly noticing Yuya's knuckles getting whiter and whiter as he continued gripping the railings. "I've never seen him look so annoyed…"
My dad shouted down words of encouragement, to which Sora turned around and waved to us. "Don't worry! I'm not letting it bother me! I'm just having fun!" he cheered.
Fun? Fun!? This was Sora's new idea of fun? What happened to being calm and having around 1500 ways of being able to defeat his opponent and always choosing the most gruelling and slow win he could achieve, through his formidable Fusion summoning and his mean mind games? I had seen all his different duelling styles when I was training with him. His seven-win matches in order to enter this tournament; nothing like this had ever happened before.
And then, the second Sora looked away from us, his face was hidden by shadow but his glare shone through.
"My turn," Kurosaki drawled. "I activate Rise Falcon's monster effect! By using an overlay unit, it gains attack equal to the total attack of all of my opponent's special summoned monsters on the field until the end phase!"
Kurosaki's bird's attack increased by 2400, taking it up to 3500. I blinked, amazed the tables had turned so drastically in a few seconds. One minute, Sora was laying on the attacks and then the next minute, it's Kurosaki who looks like he's going to deal a load of damage.
"That's not happening!" Sora yelled, sprinting off and jumping, successfully snatching and Action Card from the branch of a tree. "Action Magic, Evade!"
"Pointless. Counter-trap, Raptor's Storm activate!" Kurosaki intercepted, making Sora's eyes narrow. "If I control a Raid Raptor's monster I can negate the activation of my opponent's spell or trap card."
Sora's freakish monster was destroyed and he was sent rocketing backwards due to the sudden pressure. He bounced painfully off the ground several times, his lollipop flying out his mouth, as he skidded to a stop.
"Sora!" Yuya and I shouted in unison.
"I set two cards and end my turn," Kurosaki said. "At this time, Rise Falcon's effect wears off and its attack returns to normal."
"Are you ok, Sora!?" Yuya shouted down, as it became apparent that Sora was struggling to stand. Had he hit his head a little too hard when he fell? However, he either didn't hear Yuya's words of concern or he chose to ignore them.
"You are… Really pissing me off, you know that yeah?" Sora snapped, which made my eyes widen. "How many times have you destroyed my monsters now!? No more Mr. Nice Guy! This time, I'm really going all out!"
"Yuya!" I stepped closer to him, so he could see me. He looked up and we exchanged glances. "I really don't like this…"
All Yuya did was nod and we both turned back to the game to see Sora rip open a new lollipop and stick it in his mouth.
"My turn!" Sora pulled the card out and began his turn at a speed I thought would be impossible for him. "I activate the Magic Card: Seam Reborn! I Special Summon Furnimal Sheep from my Graveyard!
"Next, I activate the Continuous Spell: Des-Toy Factory's effect! By banishing one Fusion card in my graveyard I can Fusion Summon a Des-Toy Fusion Monster! I'll fuse Furnimal Sheep and Edge Imp Chain in my hand! Fusion Summon! Des-Toy Chain Sheep!
"When this monster attacks, it negates all spells and traps my opponent plays!" Sora grinned wickedly. "Now that little specialty of yours has been sealed! Battle! Chain Sheep! Attack Rise Falcon!"
And then, another chase began. Kurosaki and his massive robotic bird shot off being chased by Sora's attack in the form of a long red beam. They shot through the arena but then they collided with an almighty bang, which shook the stadium.
"He did it!" Ayu cheered, as Kurosaki was seen again plummeting towards the ground for an instant before landing perfectly on a building and jumping down via other rooftops before he landed and rolled, landing in a field of grass.
"And with that, you're monster's attack is done," Kurosaki didn't even look at his opponent as he brushed some 'dirt' off his collar. "So that effect has ended as well."
"What was that!?" Sora demanded.
"I activate the Quick Play Spell: Rank Up Magic- Raptor's Force!" Kurosaki declared. "I Special Summon the destroyed Rise Falcon and make it rank up to a Raid Raptors monster that is one rank higher!"
"What did you say!?" Sora screamed, hardly believing his ears.
That's… That's just crazy… I thought, staring down with my mouth wide open.
"Rank up! XYZ change! Come forth, Rank 5! Raid Raptors Blaze Falcon!"
Like the other XYZ monster that Kurosaki controlled, it wasn't packed full of attack points but it was more than 100. Now, with 1000 attack points, it was slightly larger and had swapped its colours from green to red. But if there was one thing I had learned about Kurosaki was to not judge his monsters by their attack points. I was willing to bet all my cards in my deck that it had a nasty, almost unfair ability that was about to be unleashed on Sora.
Thinking of Sora, his shoulders began shaking violently as he began to giggle. "Nice! Very Nice!" he cackled. "You're quite the entertainer yourself, aren't you!? Let me thank you for making this so exciting!"
"I'm having so much fun and so excited, I can't even contain myself!" Sora leaned forward, displaying the manic expression splashed on his face. "I end my turn here! Now, let me enjoy this even more!"
"Enjoy?" Kurosaki hissed. "What you will experience is the agony of death and defeat! My turn!"
"I can't watch this…" I moaned, leaning my arms on the barrier and burying my head in them. I took deep breaths, only for them to come out shaky and painful. "What's happening?" I asked Yuya after a few seconds of staring into the darkness that was my left arm.
"Kurosaki has just activated his XYZ's effect… He's destroying all of Sora's Special Summoned monsters and dealing 500 points of damage for each…" Yuya said darkly. "Oh wait, Sora's played a trap-!"
A resounding explosion shook the stands making me yelp and grip onto the railing, in case I was chucked off.
"Alright! Nice Reaction Sora!" I could hear Gongenzaka shout from behind me.
When the tremors stopped, I slowly lifted my head to blink down. My gaze was all fuzzy but I could just make out the shape of Sora and his monster, still standing but all surrounded in an orange hue. I shook my head and opened and closed my eyes until I could see what was actually going on. I gasped (then choked) as I watched the fire engulf the Action Field, on a rampage to destroy the city.
"Blaze Falcon can attack my opponent directly!" Kurosaki snapped. "Go!"
I grimaced and looked away as I heard the attack colliding with the boy. Then, I heard Yuya screaming. I looked back only to scream, as I saw a building begin to fall right on top of Sora. It was over. Sora was going to lose by forfeit and it was not going to be pretty. Debris was cascading towards him in the form of solid rock from the size of stones to the size of boulders. Then, suddenly, Sora vanished.
"Wow," Yoko inhaled sharply.
"What's with that movement!?" my dad murmured, as Sora jumped upwards from rock to rock, then vaulted and landed away from the building, which collapsed with a bone-shaking crash. If Sora had been under that, he would have serious injuries.
"I'm going to grab some more water…" I muttered to Yuya who just nodded, still watching Sora's very move. I repeated my plans to Yoko and my dad and began to shuffle off.
"Yuzu-neechan! I'll come too!" Ayu cried, jumping down from her seat and catching me up, extending her hand so I could hold it, so I couldn't lose her in any way. We walked down a corridor which lead us out into the stadium hallway, which spanned the entire circumference of the circular building. I caught sight of a stall and started towards it.
"It's really scary up there…" Ayu whispered to me.
"Don't worry, it's just a duel," I smiled, wondering if it looked as fake as it felt.
"It's like their at war with each other…" she said miserably, as we arrived at the drinks counter and I ordered five bottles of water. "They're completely destroying the city… And Sora… He's kinda scary…"
"He's just caught up in it all," I told her, as I handed my money over the counter and picked up the paper bag full of drinks. "Come on, we better get back quickly before we miss something big!"
"Who do you think will win, Yuzu-neechan?" Ayu asked me, as we began jogging up the corridor, where the screaming and cheering was getting louder and louder.
"I don't know," I answered honestly, after pondering her question. There was no obvious victor in this duel and even though I knew I should have been rooting for Sora, it was rather difficult. Not that I wanted him to lose.
"…We are no longer submissive prey for you to hunt!" Kurosaki snarled, as we walked back into the arena. The tension fell on top of us like a thick blanket- thick and suffocating. We charged back up to the others. Yuya looked completely shocked.
"Sora's people… Attacked him…?" he whispered. My eyes widened as I heard his words.
"Aren't you getting carried away?" Sora's eyes bulged and his smile got even wider. He looked absolutely evilly demented. "Don't even joke about it! I can win a duel like this licking some candy!" He pulled out a lollipop but instead of putting it in his mouth, he snapped down on it, cracking it in half. Eating a lollipop had never looked so petrifying.
"It's just a game! There's no need to get serious!" Sora cackled. "That's the same with my friends as well! We all hunted you, just for fun! Because all of you were just pray for our hunting games!"
"Oh my…" I choked. "Is he actually implying that-!?"
"Prey?" Yuya said. "Game? What is he saying!?"
"I activate the Magic Card: Des-Toy Fusion!" Sora screamed. "I banish the Scissor Bear, Wheel Saw Lion and Chain Sheep in my graveyard, and Fusion summon a Des-Toy monster using them as Fusion Materials!"
"Yuya, what is happening!?" I turned to him, hoping he knew the answer. But his eyes full of uncertainty was my only answer.
"Fusion Summon!" Sora cackled with glee. "Come forth! Des-Toy Mad Chimera!"
"He's gone mad…" my dad whispered. "He has actually…"
"Battle! Mad Chimera attacks Blaze Falcon!" Sora's attack hit the bird and it was completely annihilated. Kurosaki's life points dropped to 400 but he hadn't given up yet. "I activate Mad Chimera's effect, if it destroys a monster in battle, I can Special Summon that monster to my side of the field!
"Mad Chimera's attack goes up by 300 points for every monster it controls this way," Sora smirked, holding up three fingers to demonstrate. The monster's attack rose to 3100 and Blaze Falcon was also on Sora's field. He had the advantage! He had Kurosaki on the ropes!
So why was I dreading his victory?
"Now your monster has become mine," Sora put his hands on his hips. "Do you understand now? You can never hunt me! The ones being hunted are always you! Now and forever more!"
"What has he been talking about!?" Yuya demanded.
"Sora…" I gasped, staring down at my fellow pupil.
"I'll at least give you the honour of dying by your own monster's hand," Sora's words made my heart as cold as ice. When he said 'dying' he meant 'losing', right? "With a direct attack from your Blaze Falcon's 1000 attack points, you and your life points will-"
"Ridiculous," Kurosaki snapped. "We of the Resistance always fight prepared for the worst-case scenario! All while considering the possibility of our comrades might be captured by the enemy… But even if they may be taken away… We will never abandon them! We will always take back our comrades!"
"Quick Play Magic! Rank Up! Revolution Force! I can take control of an XYZ monster on my opponent's field and make it Rank Up to a XYZ monster that is one Rank higher!"
"What!?" Sora screamed, for not the first time in this match.
"Rank Up! XYZ change! Come forth! Rank 6, Raid Raptors Revolution Falcon!"
Sora stared for a second in (what looked like) sheer terror but then, his twisted psychotic smirk reappeared. "What? You start talking about revolutions and nonsence, but then it only has 2000 attack points!?"
It was true though. Kurosaki's new monster may have looked tough but Sora's ultimate Fusion Monster, even though it had points deducted due to Kurosaki's Falcon leaving Sora's field, it still had much higher attack points of 2800.
"That's just a bluff isn't it!?" Sora snarled, looking around the arena. "Because you have no set cards on your field at all!"
"Stop it!" Yuya shouted down to Sora. "Don't provoke him!"
"He's dangerous!" I backed up Yuya's screams. "Sora, he really will-!"
"I activate my Falcon's effect! When it is summoned, I can destroy one Special Summoned monster on my opponent's field and deal damage equal to half its attack points! Go! Revolution Falcon!"
The bird shot upwards, so high up it was hovering just below the arena ceiling. It opened its mechanical wings and began dropping bombs onto the city. Kurosaki was willing to destroy his own city to defeat Sora. Buildings were collapsing and everything began to crumble away. Sora took off at a sprint.
"Stop this! This isn't duelling!" Yuya screamed.
Sora dived for an Action Card that was lying on the ground, he snatched it up and turned to activate it when his face froze. A building which had been blown apart at the base was falling like a falling tree, right where Sora was standing. But, unlike this time, Sora had the power to do nothing. The building collapsed with a crash which rocked the entire stadium, smoke and debris filling the building making all the spectators cough and splutter.
Then, there was a familiar swooshing noise and then a life point meter hit zero. The Action Field had forced shut down due to the accident that was milliseconds from happening and had vanished, leaving Sora face-down on the shining metal floor, unmoving.
"Th-The winner is Kurosaki!" Nico Smiley's paniced voice shouted over the speakers.
"There's no way I would lose," Sora's voice coughed. "I won't lose to you XYZ scum!" He desperately tried to get up but could only balance on his hands and knees, shaking violently.
Kurosaki turned and stalked off.
"Wait! Don't run away!" Sora shrieked. "Duel me… again…"
And with that, the boy collapsed.
"Sora!" Yuya and I charged down the stairs and tried to get through the Duelist's enterance but we were held back by officials.
"He may be seriously injured," one of the guards told us. "Let the medical team do their job, please."
I watched in horror as the medical team ran out with a stretcher, lifted him on and charged off, shouting about an ambulance.
I knew him as Sora. My school-mate. My friend. My teacher.
Now, I knew him as Sora. Still my school-mate. Still my teacher. But as a complete stranger.
Cat: You may not think it but that was a really difficult episode to write about...
Rena: But OMG it was soooo good! Sora was terrifying! We hope the chapter has done the episode justice!
Cat: ...
Rena: ...
Cat: *breaks down in floods of tears* I am a failure...
Rena: Ummm... Anyway... Today's question:
If you could have any anime character shrunk down and sitting on your shoulder, able to converse with you (and only you) and comment on your life, who would it be and why?
(Random, i know, but imagine it!)
P.S So this episode went back to the Japanese monster names (insert dying noises here). Thanks to all the reviewers who told me so and thanks to all the people giving me advice for finding the proper Japanese monster names.
Thought i should just say, i will be sticking to the Japanese monster names as much as i can because if i wanted the dub names, i would wait for the dub!
(Dear readers in the future who are currently watching/already seen the dub: I'm sorry but the monster names ARE WRONG! ... But i won't dis the dub because i watched most of GX and 5ds dubbed) :P
Thanks everyone, you guys are my life xx
