Chapter 28
Caroline spent the whole night evening thinking of how to spend the next day. She wanted to make Klaus suffer for everything he had done to her. At first she thought of inflicting physical pain but she knew that after a thousand years, no amount of pain would be great enough for him. So emotional pain would have to suffice and she had just the perfect idea.
But right now she needed to worry about the dinner Klaus was making her attend. She was glad it wasn't far from their suite which was on the top floor whereas the restaurant was on the first floor. Just in case she had to run. She decided to wear the black backless floor length dress that he had insisted would look best on her. She told herself it had nothing to do with the fact that it showed the most of her skin and had a huge cut on the right side, leading up to her thigh. She let her hair down after curling it and wore very little make up. She checked her appearance just one more time in the mirror before she sighed and stepped out of the bathroom to see Klaus ready and waiting for her.
He was wearing a black suit which was not only designer but also tailored to perfection showing of his body in the best way possible. She shook her head trying to rid herself of all the bad thoughts about Klaus. What was she doing? How could she even think such a thing?
Klaus smiled at her obvious thoughts as if she was an open book. "You look ravishing tonight" he compliment and his gaze travelled up and down her body. She really did look marvelous in that dress and all he wanted to do was tie her down to his bed and have his way with her. Damn the dinner.
"You need new material" she replied rolling her eyes, clearly unimpressed, and moved past him deliberately shoving him in the process but he seemed unfazed by it.
"Let's just go" she said tiredly looking at him.
He nodded and linked her arm through his making her roll her eyes once again. "So eager" he commented mockingly once they stepped foot into the elevator. They were the only people other than another woman who looked around 40 and the conductor.
The woman smiled at them skeptically, "I'm sorry. Are you both staying here for the first time?" she asked very straight forward.
Klaus slid his arm on around her waist and tightened his hold on her. "I have been here a few times but it's our first time here together after our wedding" Klaus lied easily with his dimpled smile plastered on his smug face.
The woman's smile turned into a minor yelp of excitement, "Oh you're married! How lovely!" she commented cheerfully. "It's nice to know that young couples still believe in the notion of marriage" she added trying to make small talk.
"Yes Mrs. Mikaelson here was very adamant about her huge wedding reception and who am I to deny her?" he said sweetly before pecking Caroline's cheek almost lovingly. Caroline passed a tight lipped smile to the woman who was almost bouncing with happiness.
"Yes well who wouldn't want to show off this … bundle of joy?" Caroline said cheekily with a fake laugh and pinched Klaus' cheek. 'Two can play this game Mikaelson' she thought and smirked.
Klaus was taken aback when she pinched his cheek like someone would a child's but he ignored it and was happy that she willingly made contact with him. However, his fantasy was short lived before the elevator made a dinging sound and the doors opened. They both said goodbye to the woman and moved towards the restaurant.
"That was very interesting information Mrs. Mikaelson. I'd love for you to pinch me again though" he mused chuckling when she scoffed at him.
"Whatever!" she hissed at him angrily.
After an hour and a half, they were settled in the restaurant in a private section and had already eaten their dinner and drunk their wine, which had all been selected by Klaus. Of course. It was time for dessert when Klaus decided to speak up. Again.
"What have you decided to do tomorrow love?" he asked nonchalantly.
Caroline shrugged not really wanting to disclose her plans, "I don't know yet" she simply answered and went back to gazing at the dessert menu. Suddenly it seemed very interesting to her.
Klaus smirked and leaned forward, not tearing his gaze from her face. "There are a number of things we could do together" he answered suggestively.
Caroline sighed and dropped her menu on the table. "Klaus I don't need you flirting with me every minute of my life. Okay?" she almost yelled at him and then took deep breaths and crossed her arms over her chest.
"Why do you fight it Caroline?" he asked very seriously.
Caroline furrowed her eyebrows together, "Fight what?" she asked.
"This" he said gesturing between the two of them. "I know you feel just as much attraction towards me as I towards you. Then why do you fight it?" he asked again.
"Just because I want to doesn't mean I should" she simply answered gazing at him. They both stared at each other, no one willing to break the staring competition.
Their moment was broken when the waiter came in to take their dessert order. Klaus only gave her one last look before ordering for the both of them again.
They stayed silent for some time before Caroline spoke up again, "When are you going to let me go back to my mom?" she asked suddenly remembering why she was being so cooperative with him in the first place.
"Of course. We will discuss that but before that tell me what Tyler Lockwood was doing here? Since when have you been meeting him?" he asked narrowing his eyes at her.
She was about to respond when he spoke up, "And don't lie Caroline" he growled and the way he said her name it was a clear enough warning.
"Fine. I only met him today in the afternoon. He … left Mystic Falls and came to find me. I told him that I can't leave because I made a deal with you" she said not making eye contact and eating her dessert. She deliberately left out the part about her mother and Damon. She only wondered how could an original be so careless and couldn't they tell if a person was being compelled or not?
Klaus smiled dangerously which had Caroline gulping in fear and anticipation, "Caroline" he said in a low, husky and dangerous voice.
"What?" she asked innocently shoving a spoonful of chocolate cake in her mouth?
"So that's it? There was nothing more?" he asked knowingly.
"Yeah that's it" she shrugged hoping he couldn't see through her lies.
"You are a terrible liar Caroline" he drawled and Caroline's shoulders slumped knowing she was caught.
If maybe she led him into the wrong direction, Tyler's plan would be safe after all. "We made out okay? Happy!" she told him still not making eye contact.
"Well that's a shame. Now I'm going to have to rip Tyler limb to limb until he's only a writhing mess of flesh and only then will I rip out his heart" he sung like there was some beautiful poetry.
Caroline's eyes widened. How could she be so stupid? Of course Klaus would have a jealous streak. "You can't do that. If you do, our deal is off. I won't stay with you" she challenged him and ignored the way the blood was rushing in her veins.
"You have no shortage of loved ones sweetheart" he challenged back.
"If you do this I will never forgive you" she answered.
"Maybe I'm not looking for your forgiveness. Maybe it's your acceptance that I'm after" he told her.
Before she could respond, however, Klaus spoke up again. "Don't fret sweetheart. I was only checking to see if I can trust you yet, which I cannot. I compelled Tyler Lockwood" he stated and watched how her breathing quickened and he could practically hear the rush of blood in her veins.
"You what?" she asked genuinely confused.
"You heard me. I compelled him to see what you would do. You really didn't think I would leave such a huge gap in my plans did you sweetheart?" he asked with an amused expression making Caroline feel like the biggest fool in the world.
"Well I hoped you did" she muttered sinking in her seat.
Klaus merely chuckled at her. "Sweetheart you are the luckiest woman in the world to have the original hybrid on his knees for you. To show you the world. Why not thrive in the power you have within your palms?" he asked.
"So if I ask you for something you're just going to… give it to me?" she asked skeptically.
"Of course. Anything" he answered and gestured with a wave of his hands.
"Well I haven't thought about what I want to do tomorrow but there is one thing that needs to be clear" she lied. She had exactly in mind what kind of torture she would make him endure but she didn't want to ruin the surprise. "No killing or hurting anyone" she said and looked at him skeptically.
"It's going to be hard but I suppose if you're there to stop me. It won't be that difficult" he said trying to think what exactly she had in mind.
"If you do then what?" she countered covering all aspects.
"I give you my word. I will not kill anyone tomorrow" he promised and saw the mysterious glint in her eyes. He seriously liked this side of her.
"Fine" she said and went back to eating her dessert in peace.
The next day came faster than Klaus could've ever predicted. But for Caroline it was much more like a century. Of course they both had obvious reasons to be dreading and yearning the day. They both got ready as Caroline demanded 'a casual attire' for the day but Klaus being himself decided her clothes. A white knee length casual dress with a thin brown belt at the waist. It was a really pretty dress and it made her even more furious.
They were both in the car while Klaus was driving and Caroline was absent mindedly playing with the ends of her perfectly curled hair.
"Where are we going sweetheart?" Klaus asked her with an excited smile on his face.
Caroline shrugged. "The zoo" she answered simply still not looking up at him.
Klaus' eyebrows furrowed. "The zoo? You want to see a bunch of animals scratching each other?" he asked incredulously. He thought she would choose something exciting but going to the zoo was such a human thing to do and he couldn't be seen in the zoo of all places!?
"If you don't want to go, I'll gladly go myself" she snapped at him.
Klaus shook his head. "I'm merely curious as to why you chose the zoo?" he asked calming himself as he drove to the central zoo.
"Well, first I thought about going bungee jumping and pushing you off the cliff when you weren't looking. Then I thought we could go to the beach and I could drown you but then I realized both those things wouldn't kill you and I'm not as cold hearted as you so I thought of the zoo. I haven't been there since… since you came to town" she replied sadly remembering the last time, Elena, Bonnie and her had gone to the zoo in a town nearby Mystic Falls together.
"If it's a zoo you want to go to, then we'll go" he announced and thankfully, they both remained silent for the remainder of the ride.
Klaus bought them tickets as they both entered together. Caroline looked around and then studied the pamphlet in her hand carefully.
"Okay we're starting left with the monkeys and then onwards" she said, not looking up from the map in her hands. She started walking until she was pulled back into a hard chest.
Klaus smirked and inhaled her scent before moving his lips to her ear. "I will only be in control as long as you are with me love. Otherwise I won't be held responsible for my actions" he promised darkly and kissed her cheek before grabbing her hand and interlacing their fingers together.
Unfortunately for Klaus, they could not get any more private, intimate moments because they were stuck with another family who was constantly with them at every step. The two 12 year old twin boys made fun of Klaus teaming with Caroline, however, the young 9 year old girl was mesmerized by Klaus. The parents were oblivious to the danger their kids were in and it was almost like they weren't even there.
"That monkey has similar features with your boyfriend" one of the boys, Daniel, told Caroline looking at a monkey that was staring at Klaus with wide eyes.
Caroline cleared her throat uncomfortably. "He's not my boyfriend." She replied lamely much to Klaus' dismay.
"If you are in need of a boyfriend, I could always use a pretty lady like you on my arm" the other boy, Josh, suggested jokingly offering his arm which made Caroline laugh and link her arm through his.
"You're right though." She whispered to the boys, fully aware Klaus would be listening. "He does look like the monkey" she joked earning laughter from both boys and a sharp look from Klaus.
"Let's go see the wolves" Daniel spoke up again and pulled Caroline towards the wolves with Klaus and the girl following behind them.
As soon as they reached the wolves, they seemed to attract all the attention and the wolves began to scatter fearfully in their enclosure. Caroline frowned at their odd behavior but as soon as she felt the smirking presence behind her, she knew why the wolves had chosen to scatter. Even they could recognize this douche bag's alpha-male-ness from a mile away.
"I really wanted to see the wolves. Why are they hiding?" Josh and Daniel whined in unison and grabbed the metal bars of the cage.
Caroline almost felt sorry for the boys and turned to glare Klaus who was, now, grinning. Like a wolf!
"What happened sweetheart? Not enjoying?" he asked teasingly as he ran the back of his hand on her cheek.
She smacked his hand away but didn't break eye contact. "Let's go see the lion. Wolves are just a low replacement for the real thing" she stated with a smirk of her own when she saw Klaus' expression darken.
Caroline was going to move ahead when Klaus grabbed her arm again, causing her to collide into his solid chest, while the kids jumped off to the next destination. "Careful sweetheart" he warned. His breath leaving a tingling sensation over her skin. "You don't want to test my patience any more than you already have" he said and released her with a dark smile.
"And to think that this day was going to go my way" she muttered sarcastically before joining the kids who were drooling over the lion who seemed very enthusiastic for a zoo lion.
"He's so beautiful" the little girl said and watched the lion roar in awe.
The boys snorted at her. "He's not beautiful. He's strong and brave. Lions aren't beautiful" Daniel said making fun of his sister who frowned at her brothers.
"Absolutely not!" Caroline argued hugging the little girl. "Lions are brave and beautiful" she said and watched as the little girl smiled.
"Who wants to get ice cream? Caroline asked changing the subject after a while.
All the kids raised their hands and even Caroline raised her hand excitedly and Klaus watched in awe as she laughed and genuinely enjoyed her time. He wanted her to be with like this. But before they could continue their time with the kids, their parents called them back and, much to Caroline's dismay, she was left alone with Klaus.
"Come on. Let's get you some ice cream love" he said before grabbing her hand and taking her to the nearest ice cream parlor. Klaus sat there, watching as Caroline, the baby vampire, ate ice cream like a little child. But that wasn't what had grabbed his attention. It was her tongue. The way she was licking the cone was making him wonder how well she could use her tongue on other objects. He was sitting right next to her on the bench right outside the ice cream shop. Of course, he had refused to eat but Caroline had gotten herself a cone regardless.
She kept herself busy licking the ice cream, ignoring his stare. But he kept on looking and his control snapped when he saw a droplet of ice cream trickling down her chin. Before he could even stop himself, he tilted her head so that she was facing him and brought his mouth to hers immediately. He licked the ice cream from her chin to her lips and kissed her slowly. She tried to push him away at first, dropping her ice cream on the ground but he halted her resistance and soon she got lost into the kiss.
One of his arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer while his other hand busied itself in her blonde locks. Caroline closed her eyes only for a second and all her control snapped. She brought her hands up and wrapped them around his neck, kissing him back with everything she had. She tugged at his hair and pulled it restlessly as he kissed the living daylights out of her.
Klaus lowered her onto the bench and hovered over her, without breaking the kiss. She wrapped her legs around his waist and rolled her hips against his and Klaus felt himself go hard. They were broken apart by a throat clearing behind them. Caroline was the first to get back to her senses and tried to break away but Klaus tugged and bit her bottom lip with his teeth. Caroline scowled at him and perforce he let her go.
"Oh my God" Caroline breathed out placing her hands over her mouth in embarrassment as her face paled seeing the person intruding.
Klaus turned around and saw his least favorite person standing there. Tyler Lockwood. His failure of a hybrid. "Fancy seeing you here mate" he greeted sarcastically.
Tyler clenched and unclenched his fists angrily before turning to glare Caroline. "How could you!?" he seethed. His eyes flashing gold.
"Tyler it's not what it looks like- Caroline started but Klaus interrupted her. "What is what? Oh. Us kissing is just that and a little more maybe" Klaus said grinning.
Caroline turned to stare at Klaus in shock. Why the hell was he lying? Did he want Tyler to believe that they had slept together, when they hadn't?
"Just listen to me Ty- Caroline started again but Tyler held his hand up to silence her as his eyes flashed gold. "Don't" he warned angrily.
He then turned to Klaus, "You called me. Why?" he asked trying to break free of Klaus' compulsion and attack him but he couldn't. It was too strong.
Klaus smirked watching him struggle. "For starters watch your tone mate. Secondly, get a flight for my girl and I for London for tonight" he ordered putting his hand on Caroline's back who tried to move away but his hold was too strong.
Tyler kept glaring them. Watching as Klaus touched her. "That'll be all. You can go now" Klaus said snapping him out of the trance. Tyler gave Caroline one last look before he stormed away angrily.
As soon as he was gone, Caroline turned to Klaus and slapped him so hard across his face that her face hurt but he barely flinched. "What the hell is wrong with you!?" she yelled at him with tears in her eyes. "You deliberately called him here. And to think that you would let me have one day without any more torment. ONE DAY KLAUS!" she shouted at him as tears flowed down her cheeks.
"He needed to know that you are mine Caroline" Klaus answered. His voice serious and firm.
She turned to him again. "I AM NOT YOURS!" She yelled at him ignoring the strange looks she received from a few people around them.
"On the contrary you are. You kiss me it's fine. You let me touch you. It's fine. But you want me to keep it a secret" he stated. "You are not my dirty secret Caroline. I will not hide you from anyone" he promised darkly.
"You have taken everyone I knew from my life away. Each and every person Klaus." She told him with fresh tears replacing the old ones. "Tyler will hate me. My mother doesn't remember me. Stefan doesn't remember me. You got rid of Bonnie. You're draining Elena's blood. Why don't you just do me a favor and leave me the hell alone!?" she yelled at him frustrated and pulled at her hair as she pictures the look her mother had when she was finished compelling her. The look Stefan had when Klaus had compelled him. The look of hatred Tyler gave her. Each image made her sob harder. She sunk to the ground and hugged her knees to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
Klaus' face softened at the sight of seeing her so broken. He wanted to reach out and comfort her but he knew it wouldn't be right. He couldn't appear soft in front of her or anyone else. He couldn't let her know how her tears broke his heart.
"Compose yourself Caroline. In two days, I will arrange for you to go visit your mother" he promised. His voice stoic like his posture. "Come on. We need to go" he said holding his hand out for her to take.
Caroline looked up at him with teary eyes. A part of her was happy she was being allowed to visit her mother but another part of her was angry. Was she his wife that she needed permission to go anywhere? She stood up on her own ignoring his outstretched hand and dusted the dirt of her dress.
Klaus walked closer to her but she didn't back away from him but glared him. He moved his hand forward and wiped the tears from her cheeks stroking her reddened skin softly. He leaned in closer to her as his lips brushed against her earlobe. "I will forgive you this one time. But next time, I will throw Tyler's heart at your feet for such behavior" he warned her and bit her ear.
Caroline winced at the harshness in his tone but stood her ground and leaned in closer until her lips were at his ear. "I hate you" she spat with so much revulsion, it even surprised her. The next thing happened so fast she didn't have time to blink. Klaus wrapped his arms around her neck and twisted it so ruthlessly. Her world blacked out within a second and her body crumbled in his awaiting arms.
He placed his hands under her knees and the other under her back and lifted her effortlessly. "That went well" he commented sarcastically as he placed a kiss on her forehead and began walking. His trip had not had the desired outcome. He was nowhere near to gaining Caroline's affections and all this time had been wasted. There was no need to be crying over spilt milk. Now they had to get back with the rest. That included the annoying doppelganger. Or shall he say doppelgangers. He smiled cruelly picturing staking Katherine and walked away with his most prized possession in his arms.
A/N: Hi guys! Sorry for the long wait. It's been months I think. Don't hate me but I wasn't sure how I wanted to progress the story anymore and I thought about abandoning it but I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I'll try to keep updating more regularly like once a week. Thank you so much for the reviews. I read each and every one of your reviews and they literally make my day.
I promise there won't be such a big wait the next time. I just got busy with my other stories and real life. I love you all. Take care.
