A/N: Explanation of my story timeline is below but be warned, there are MANGA SPOILERS.
Let me just say that I started writing this before Togashi started releasing chapters again. I think what I'm going to do is mess with the timeline slightly so that the expedition to the Dark Continent is going to happen soon. Currently, the fight between Hisoka and Chrollo in Heavens Arena has already happened and, true to his promise, he would no longer let Chrollo pick the location of their next battles. That's why they were fighting in the forest. So, here's the chronological timeline simplified:
-Gon is able to use his nen again through training
-Hisoka's fight with Chrollo in Heaven's Arena
-Expedition is announced
-Kurapika and Leorio join the zodiac
-Hisoka kills Shalnark and Kortopi
-Killua arrives back on the Yorbian Continent
-Gon and Killua agree to meet in Yorknew
-Kurapika uses his contacts in the Zodiac to find Chrollo
-Hisoka lures Chrollo into the forest for battle
-Gon heads to Yorknew from Whale Island
All this happened over 4 years (from the Heavens Arena Arc).
The second he touched the soft dirt the trap sprung.
Bullets flew at him from all directions and Hisoka smiled maniacally. His bloodlust had been building from the moment he left Him and increased exponentially when the group of mercenaries began to pursue him. He sprung up in the air, sailing backward in a smooth flip and watched the bullets collide at the spot he'd been in a millisecond before. His trajectory sent him directly above one of the mercenaries who'd yet to react to his movements. A playing card had already sunk into the man's skull before Hisoka landed soundlessly on the rough bark of the tree above him.
"There he is!" One of the men shouted and bullets again flew toward him. This time he went low, stepping to his right off of the branch and touching down directly behind another mercenary. The men couldn't react in time and bullets flew into their comrade. Hisoka grabbed the collapsing, mutilated body and threw it toward another man. The bodies hit with extreme force and the woods echoed with the crunching of bones. The distraction had lasted less than two seconds but it was more than enough time for their target to disappear into the darkness. Guns aimed frantically in the dark but their scopes could find nothing.
Their terror increased when someone suddenly fell to the ground, dead. Then another. One by one they were dying without any ability to stop it. Screams of help were cut short as cards seemingly flew from every direction making it impossible for them to defend themselves. They fired short bursts helplessly into the trees without finding any purchase.
The last man was backing into a tree hoping his terrified gasps wouldn't give away his location. As his back hit the trunk a playing card appeared at his throat followed by an insidious whisper, "Who hired you to kill me?"
"I-I don't know! The man cried. Hisoka moved his wrist and the playing card dug into flesh. Blood welled to the surface, sliding slowly down the edge of the card. "Wait! I really don't know who hired us, you already killed our captain!" he gestured toward a body with a yellow patch on his tactical gear. "He still might have some information on him. That's it." The mercenary seemed to have calmed himself down as he spoke, "If that's not enough, go ahead and kill me." His mouth set in a hard line and his eyes looked straight ahead.
Smiling, Hisoka removed the card, "Run along now, I could change my mind." he said sweetly. The mercenary took no time to wonder about his sudden release and ran into the forest. Hisoka turned his attention to the captain and rifled through his clothing until he found a small notepad. He flipped it open and a picture of himself during the Hunters exam fell out. Musing aloud to himself he saw there were only two lines scratched in hurried writing: Hotel Beitacle, Yorknew City.
Gon sat on the lowest branch of a tree that jutted out over the side of the cliff. He looked out at the sprawling city before him. He arrived the previous evening, heading out just after the campfire had burnt out around him. There was no escaping the thoughts of Hisoka that pushed their way to the forefront of his thoughts. Even his dreams offered him no respite. Smoke had swirled around him in his dreamscape twisting into images of all of his failings. Kite. Pitou. Hisoka. The images bore down on him, suffocating him, smothering him awake.
Why do I feel so strongly? My interactions with Hisoka have been few and far between, why did we-? He stopped thinking at that moment and rubbed the nagging pain that would not leave his chest with the palm of his hand. There was no point trying to rationalize any of it. Gon had always known and accepted that being human meant that occasionally you would be ruled by your emotions. Even Killua, who shared so many of the same traits as Hisoka, had been hurt, protected his friends, and shown immeasurable love for his little sister.
Killua. Gon smiled and pulled his hand a way from his chest, breathing deeply. Just knowing he was less than an hour away from seeing his very best friend again gave him strength he forgot he had. He stood, gathering his things, and stomped hard on the branch beneath him. It cracked and splintered off the trunk and he sailed down the steep cliffside using the branch as a board.
Once inside the city he checked his phone to verify the location he was to meet Killua: 'Hotel Beitacle'. They had been there before, well, they had been in the lobby before four years ago fighting against the Phantom Troupe. Gon smiled at the differences in his abilities then and now. He would not be afraid if he was confronted by them again. If he could hold his own against the magician he would do just fine.
As he headed up the street nearing the hotel he heard an excited squeal a few meters ahead. A young teenager in traditional Miko clothing was jumping up and down pointing into a shop window, "Nii-chan, look! It's so cute! So, so cute!" She called out and turned to her older brother. He was tall and solidly built wearing a black turtle neck and beige pants. The beanie on his head ruffled his hair around his face and neck and framed his smiling face perfectly. He spoke a few quiet words to her and she ran in the store.
"Killua!" Gon shouted and was rewarded with the brightest smile of recognition on his friends face as he ran toward him. He stopped in front of him and they stared at each other, beaming, before Gon couldn't take it anymore. He let his pack drop to the ground and threw his arms around Killua, pulling him into a tight hug and burying his face the space between his neck and shoulder. He squeezed his eyes tight in an attempt to stop the stinging of tears before stepping back with a large sigh of contentment. Killua was just what he needed right now.
The silver-haired boy was obviously uncomfortable. He was blushing and looked away from Gon before he spoke, "Idiot, you're always so embarrassing!" He took a deep breath and brought his had to the back of his neck and pushed against the muscles that had tensed up. Still looking away he mumbled quietly, "I missed you too," before turning away completely and shoving his hands in his pockets aggressively.
Gon's face was still bright with emotion and he turned to look inside the store at Alluka who was currently paying for a pale pink headband with a white flower pattern across it. "I have so much to tell you Killua. Would you believe I lost my nen for a while? And Mito-san was so worried but I think she was also a little happy that I might not be traveling anymore. And-"
"Gon, you lost your nen?" Killua was looking at him now with surprise and concern on his face. He held his chin, thinking, "I didn't even think that could happen. How did you get it back?"
"Well I-"
"See, nii-chan? Isn't it so cute? Oh Gon nii-san!" Alluka happily embraced Gon in a tight hug.
"Good to see you Alluka, did you enjoy traveling with your brother?" He saw Alluka nod vigorously. She was about to speak when Killua spoke first.
"Hold on Alluka, let's all go back to the hotel so we can eat and be comfortable. Then we can share our stories." His hand was on the top of Alluka's head and she nodded in acceptance, still smiling.
Gon looked on at their interaction with a swell of pride. He had the pleasure to see how much Killua had grown emotionally and felt honored to be counted as his best friend. They all turned in the direction of the hotel and talked about Alluka's new garment along the way.
Hisoka felt very unsettled as he entered the bustling city. He had been quite comfortable on the airship as it soared toward Yorknew. The idea of someone trying to kill him with regular men and bullets had stoked his interest. Anyone who knew enough about him to contract a hit on him would have to know at least how powerful he was even if they didn't know his hatsu. The minute he walked off the ship however, his aura was tingling with discomfort. There was someone in this city that Hisoka knew and if they met it would be a peculiar encounter.
With a frown on his face he absentmindedly headed toward the hotel. Passersby gave him a wide berth, afraid of the unusually dressed man that exuded danger.
In the lobby of the hotel Killua and Alluka ordered room service right at the desk while Gon secured a room for himself, "Is it possible for me to have a room on the same floor as them?" he gestured over. The young woman at the desk looked over and blushed when her eyes found Killua. She nodded mutely and gave him his keycard.
As they stepped away from the counter Gon nudged Killua with his elbow. When his friend looked up he slyly pointed to the girl who was still staring at them and grinned, raising an eyebrow, "What did you do to her Killua? She's practically speechless around you." He snickered at Killua's obvious displeasure at being ogled.
"Shut up, I didn't do anything. She's just a weirdo." he let out an an irritated hiss, smacking the back of Gon's head and marching toward the elevators. "I'm eating all you food."
"Killua! That's not fair!" Gon protested but he couldn't hide his cackling as he ran after him.
The elevator bell sounded with a pleasant chime and the doors began to close. Suddenly, Gon felt a tingling on his skin. His body was sensing something. He whipped his head toward the closing doors to check the lobby but it was too late. His stomach felt cold and the ache in his chest intensified. I'm not afraid. I'm excited. What happened in the lobby? he thought, fighting to prevent himself from clutching his chest
"Hey, Gon! What the heck are you doing? Get out of the elevator!" Killua chastised him in an impatient voice, calling Gon out of his own mind. He nodded and ran after Killua trying to shake off the feelings he was having. He looked down at his arm and saw that he had goose bumps running across his entire body. He entered Killua and Alluka's room and endeavored to act normal.
The mounting awareness Hisoka was experiencing was infuriating. There was no presence around him with any malice toward him. There wasn't a single person near him that even wanted to interact with him. It increased seemingly with each step he took toward the hotel.
His frown now was downright aggressive as he opened the door to the lobby with a deceptively calm demeanor. As soon as he entered he was hyper aware of two things. The discontent he had been feeling had something to do with where he looked first: the closing elevator doors. His position near the entrance didn't allow him to see who or what was inside. His temper flared but the second presence required his immediate attention.
The woman lounging on the sofa wasn't looking at him but she smiled as she took a sip of her drink, signaling to Hisoka that she was indeed there for him. He sat down and took the other drink on the table.
"You're right on time, Hisoka." The woman smirked before finishing her drink and slamming it down on the table.
"It's been too long Abaki-chan."
A/N: If you are confused as to who Abaki is I HIGHLY recommend you read the One Shot Hisoka origin story. It's not canon YET but I think it will be.
PLEASE review this. I've picked it up and put it down so many times because I knew the last chapter was so bad. I was seriously stuck. I knew I wanted Gon and Hisoka to separate but I wasn't sure how to do it. In this chapter I hope you can see that they're sensing each others presence but are refusing to understand it.
