I could see the school before I reached it. A pink palace off in the distance. I pulled my brown coat tighter as I looked up at the grey sky.
"It will definitely snow today," I said aloud to the empty street watching my breath condense as I spoke.

Yawning, I decided in the future to, perhaps, not chase a collision grid bug all night and hoped I wouldn't embarrass myself by falling asleep on the first day.
I turned my head when I heard meowing down an alley to my right. I checked my watch. /*Still loads of time before school is in session*/
I found two kittens in a box near the burnable trash. One tumbled out of the box as it tried to swipe at me.
"Easy there, little guy," I said softly, picking him up. They were an adorable pair. Both were white with black ears and tails. One had a black splotch over its right eye; the other had one over its left.
SpriteBatch. Draw(SpriteEffects. FlipHorizontally); /*Haha, cute.*/
Not wanting them to freeze to death and having no time to scoop them up and take them home, I arranged the clothes I had brought for gym under them and draped my coat over their cardboard shelter. /*This will have to do for now.*/
I called my mom and asked her to come pick up the kittens. I could only guess at the street name so I ended up just emailing her the location my GPS gave me. /*Thank the Head Developer for cell service*/
Warmed by the fact I had prevented two cats from becoming popsicles, I sprinted toward the school, hoping it was ritzy enough to have centralized heating.

Stepping into the furnace, disguised as a tremendously gaudy pink school, was probably the high point of my life thus far. Shivering and wet with melted snow, I plodded toward what I supposed was my classroom.
No one noticed as I opened the door and surveyed the room. Students were clustered here and there, but it appeared the teacher was not yet present.
I pondered whether to wait in the classroom or to go find the faculty room for a moment.
I dripped in the doorway until I heard someone softly clear their throat behind me.
"Oh, excuse me," I muttered, turning about-face and bowing slightly at the short boy trying to enter the classroom.
"Not a problem. Are you the transfer student? Sensei should be here soon to introduce you to the class," his voice was kind.
He seemed to realize I was dripping in the doorway and looked like he was about to say something, until something behind me caught his eye.
"Haruhi, who's this?"
"Yeah, did you bring us a new toy?"
I turned to discover two familiar, bored faces looming over me. I blinked in surprise. Grins spread on their faces in unison.
"Stopping condition-san!" I stiffened. They remembered me. They saw me being and idiot, and they weren't going to let me forget it.
"Haruhi, what is the foreigner from the commoner airplane doing here?" the one on the right asked as they stood on either side of Haruhi, both propping an elbow on his shoulders.
"And why is she all wet?" the one on the left said as they reached out and ruffled my wet hair simultaneously. Haruhi must have sensed my discomfort.
"She's the transfer student and leave her alone you guys. I'm sure she doesn't want some shady twins harassing her on her first day."
The twins pouted. One of them actually started sniffling.
"Hikaru!" the left twin cried and suddenly they were in each others arms, "Haruhi thinks we're villains. Am I so bad, Hikaru? You'd scold me if I was, right?"
"You know I always scold you when your bad, Kaoru…" he trailed off, his face inches from his brother's, their bodies pressed together. Girls began murmuring excitedly behind us.
I could feel my face heating up. I looked over to Haruhi for guidance.
He looked annoyed.
"Could you guys please not do that stuff in class?" He said, obviously trying to control his irritation. They grinned devilishly.
"But Haruhi, how else will we keep our fangirls satisfied?" the twin previously identified as Hikaru said, winking at her.
"Yeah, Haruhi. How?" Kaoru chimed in.
"Whatever," Haruhi huffed, "If you two are done being idiots, I'm going to get my spare gym clothes for… Uh, sorry what is your name?"
"Oh, hajimemashite," I began bowing. "I'm Duende Louise. Please take care of me!"
"So enthusiastic. Don't you think, Kaoru?" Hikaru said sending a smirk my direction.
"Definitely, Hikaru. It's kind of—"
"cute!" they chorused.
"What?" I practically yelped and they snickered. /*First cool and now cute. The standards must have lowered*/
"Wait, Haruhi—"
"you don't even take gym."
/*Do they finish each other's sentences all the time? Do they rehearse this stuff?*/
"Oh yeah, you're right." He smiled sheepishly at me.
"Here, you can use my gym clothes. I think you'd be too tall for Haruhi's even if he had some," Kaoru said as Hikaru shoved them into my hands.
I could feel my cheeks flush at their unexpected kindness, and rushed off to the nearest bathroom to change with a mumbled 'thank you.'
"I guess their teasing isn't the malicious sort," I thought, peeling off my soaked clothes. I smiled to myself as I rolled up the hem of Kaoru's too long sweatpants.
When I returned, the teacher had finally arrived. He had me introduce myself. I was then directed to sit behind Haruhi, in the far corner of the classroom next to the twins.
The first class we had was history. Today's topic was the Perry Expedition. My mother wrote a few papers on the subject when she was attending grad school. Having read them a while back, I felt my knowledge was up to par. I absently scrawled some pseudo code, for the game I had started working on the night before, until I heard the scrapes of chairs and books that signaled the end of that period.
I looked up to see red haired doppelgängers watching me intently. Slowly, toothy grins stretched across their faces.
"What's this?" they said.
"Is our transfer a little slacker?" twin_a mocked.
"What were you doodling?" twin_b said swiping my notebook. They looked at it for a moment.
"Really?" they asked, "Do you dream in code, Stopping condition-san?"
"Leave her alone you guys. Also, her name is Duende-san." They shrugged.
"Whatever."
"It was boring anyway."
