The next few classes passed uneventfully. There was a lecture on Modern Japanese, which sucked Death Sticks. The kanji were confusing, and I barely had time to copy everything off the board. After that was Trig. Then it was time for lunch. Haruhi asked me to join him. While the twins, I assumed, wandered off to the cafeteria.
"So, what did you bring for lunch today?" Haruhi asked as we pushed our desks together.
"Just a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some apple slices," I replied, getting my lunch out from my desk.
"Is that like a peanut cream sandwich?" he asked as he unwrapped his own lunch.
"Um, I don't really know. I don't think I've ever eaten one. Want to try mine?"
He took a bite and made a face as he tried to get the peanut butter off the roof of his mouth.
"I think I'll stick to peanut cream sandwiches, but thanks for letting me have some." He smiled winningly and proceeded to dig into his own lunch.
"So, why are we the only one's eating in here? Where did everyone go?" I asked.
"The cafeteria. I always bring my lunch because the food there is expensive."
"Oh, I guess I should make sure to bring my lunch everyday then," I said to myself.
"Wait, you can't afford the food here?" we asked at the same time.
I made a motion for Haruhi to go first.
"Well, I'm here on a scholarship."
"Oh, I didn't know they offered scholarships at this school. You must be an excellent student to be accepted to such a prestigious academy, Fujioka-san."
"I'm alright, I guess," was his humble reply. "And please, feel free to call me Haruhi," he continued smoothly.
/*Wait are we friends now? Holy Hera, this is new.*/ I couldn't help but smile at him.
"Sure, Haruhi-kun. You can call me Louise, if you like," I offered, looking away. I met his eyes once more and shrugged. "As for me, my father's new employer offered to pay for my tuition, as a benefit I suppose."
"Wow, that's fortunate," he said through a mouthful of seaweed salad.
I put away my empty lunchbox and checked the time. We still had about twenty minutes until lunch ended, so I pulled out my Trig homework and began to decipher the characters in the word problems. Haruhi watched me intently while munching on his last octopus ball.
"You know, I'm not the best at trigonometry, but if you need some help we could study together."
I looked up, my thoughts of potentially writing furigana above the characters dissipating.
"Actually, I'm fine at trigonometry. I just don't know many characters yet, so I have trouble reading the problems," I said quietly, looking down at my desk.
"Oh, well if that's the case, I can definitely help. One of my favorite subjects is Traditional Japanese," he said smiling that bright smile again.
/*He's gotta stop smiling like that after he says nice stuff to me.*/
"Why don't we study together on our next day off?" he asked.
"Uh, sure," I replied still confused how this was going so well. I hadn't had someone be so nice to me since Jacob… I shivered involuntarily at the thought. */I really need to reallocate that memory.*/
"Are you still cold, Du-, eto, Ruisu-chan?" Haruhi asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Oh, no, I'm fine. Thanks, Haruhi-kun. So, where and when are we studying?"
