I shifted from my cross-legged position on the floor, setting my laptop to the side, and pulled my vibrating phone from my pocket. It was Haruhi.
/*He must be calling to cancel*/
"What's up? We still have three hours until the study session," I said as I answered the call.
"That's the thing actually… the guys from my club decided to commandeer our study date."
"Club? And what do you mean commandeer?" I asked. In the background I heard a boy yelling something about a 'new friend' and 'let Daddy talk to her.'
"The host club. You already know two of them, Hikaru and Kaoru. And commandeer, as in take over."
"Sorry, I know what that word means. I meant are they joining us or what?"
"Oh well, um, sorry to impose on you like this, but I can't talk them out of it. We'll all be at your apartment in about ten minutes."
/*Fracking, what?*/ "Oh, okay. See you then," I said as calmly as possible, hanging up.
string emotional_state = "panic";
"Mom!"
After telling my parents the news I scrambled to take a shower and dress before they arrived. My dad set out something for me to wear, before he began tidying the living room.
My mother was baking up a storm by the time I began to frantically dress and dry my hair. I was applying pomade to my hair as the intercom buzzed.
I almost tripped as I rushed to greet them. I leaned onto the door frame I had grabbed for support, trying to cover up my clumsiness. The twins snickered at me.
"Your enthusiasm is quite endearing, Duende-kun," one of them said as they leaned on each other in the doorway.
"Don't worry, we're excited to see you too," the other said winking.
I looked down, hoping I wasn't blushing. In my peripheral vision I saw Haruhi elbow them.
"Please, excuse these two for being so rude, Mademoiselle. We are the Host Club," a tall blonde boy said taking my mother's hands. "Over here," he gestured in the direction of the gigantic tan boy stooped in the genkan, "We have the Strong Type, Morinozuka Takashi-san. Mori for short. In this direction," he motioned to the small blonde beside Mori-san, "is the Boy Lolita Type, Haninozuka Mitsukuni, also known as Honey. The Cool Type, Kyoya Ootori." The dark haired man with glasses smiled pleasantly as he looked up from his notebook briefly. "The Little Devil Types Hitachiin Hikaru and Hitachiin Kaoru. And I am Suou Tamaki, the Princely Type. We are pleased to make your acquaintance."
My mother seemed charmed, my father amused.
"Vous êtes tout simplement charmant! Just charming," my mother said slipping into French momentarily as she fawned over Tamaki. He and my mother started conversing in French.
Something about the introductions tugged at my memory.
"Wait, you're Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin?" I asked, wide eyed. My father seemed to register what I had said.
"I'm pleased to finally meet you both. I'm Duende William. I work for your mother as her new show director." The surprise was evident on their faces. They gave my father a more polite greeting than I thought they were capable of, while shooting mischievous looks in my direction.
When introductions were finished, we all squeezed into my bedroom. Suou gathered me into a bone-crushing hug.
"Haruhi didn't tell me you are French! It is marvelous to have someone to talk to in my mother tongue," he said in rapid French. "I can't believe you kept this from Daddy!" was shot at Haruhi, but it was still in French and Haruhi just stared at him blankly.
"Suou-san, I don't think Haruhi understood that. Actually, I didn't even understand that. What do you mean Daddy? Is that supposed to be you? Also, please let go of me," I said in Japanese so Haruhi wouldn't be left out.
Tamaki seemed to ignore my concerns completely, because he just scolded me, telling me to use French when I speak with him.
I was saved by Haruhi pulling him away and telling him, "If you can't behave yourself, I won't talk to you for the next week." Tamaki sat at the low table in the middle of my room looking positively dejected.
As everyone settled, the twins wormed their way into sitting on either side of me.
"So…" the one on my right began.
"You're the adorable little blondie our mother can't stop raving about." A dangerous smile working it's way onto his lips.
/*Why does everyone keep using weird adjectives to describe me all of a sudden?*/ I looked down and fidgeted with my pencil case zipper.
"Either study or go play somewhere else. You're bothering Ruisu-chan," Haruhi directed at the twins.
The redheads pulled out their math books after a short stare-down with Haruhi.
The studying finally commenced. Tamaki enthusiastically praised Haruhi's explanations every few minutes. Mom brought in an assortment of cakes and hors d'oeuvres. Honey munched on them fervently, crumbs littering the table and icing decorating his face. Mori cleaned up after him, both obviously disinterested in studying. It was a while before I noticed the twins weren't on either side of me anymore.
I looked around to find them lounging on my futon with my laptop open in front of them.
/*I haven't refactored any of that code yet!*/ "What are you doing?" I cried, scrambling to get my laptop away from them. "Don't go snooping through my things!" I said dropping onto the futon and trying to tug my laptop out of their grasp.
"We didn't do anything," they said together with a shrug, letting go of the laptop suddenly, causing me to topple backward with a thud.
"I was just refactoring the game engine, and adding a little abstraction so the magic mechanics would be smoother," the twin to my right pouted.
"And I was just throwing around some ideas for the storyline. Plus, your animation class needs some work; you should only have one image file you pull the sprites from," the other told me.
"We were just trying to help you," they concluded.
I stared at them, with my mouth slightly agape, until they began to grin at my nonplussed expression. Breaking free of my daze, I skimmed the code they had edited.
"Amazing!"
They shared a look and then peered curiously at me.
"You two are amazing!" I repeated, my focus shifting back to the code.
They closed my laptop briskly and asked together, "Why aren't you angry?"
I looked up at them to find their faces startlingly close to mine.
I leaned back a little in surprise and felt my face flush. "W-why would I be angry? I mean, yeah, you saw some of my embarrassingly crude code, but the solutions you came up with are phenomenal and your code is concise and, uh…" /*Ah, beginning with a stutter and trailing off after a ramble, the peak of eloquence.*/
Both of their mouths formed a small 'o' and their eyebrows raised a fraction of an inch. The right one said, "Huh." The other contributed an, "Oh," shortly after. The air in the room suddenly seemed charged as the rest of the Host Club became deathly silent.
"Did Kao-chan and Hika-chan…" Honey trailed off.
"Yes." Came Haruhi's stunned reply.
"What do you—" I began, but Kyoya interrupted.
"I think that we have done all the studying we can for one day. Thank you Duende-san for inviting us into your home. It has been a pleasure, but I'm afraid we mustn't impose on you any longer."
With that, Kyoya ushered the Hitachiin twins out to the room. The rest of the club followed suit, while Haruhi hung back.
"I hope this study session helped a little. I'm sorry the rest of the club came along. I hope it wasn't too much trouble," Haruhi said somewhat penitently even though he hadn't had a say in the Host Club's appearance.
I thought of my finished Modern Japanese homework and improved code. I smiled and shook my head. "It was no trouble, really."
