* I am cursed to never own Vampire Knight or Fairy Tail, but I can still write this story!
General POV
It had been easy to find a recipe to make chocolates and even easier to get the ingredients. The maids that worked in the Moon Dorm had become used to her presence in the kitchen over the last couple weeks and she had already befriended most of them so they made sure that she had everything she needed. The maids were a great help since Lucy had never made chocolates before and didn't want to mess them up. She still did them herself, but they were instructing her every step of the way.
She ended up making four batches of chocolates. One batch were for her human friends, another large batch were for all her spirits, the third batch was specially made for her vampire friends, and the last batch was made for her special someone. It hadn't been easy to decide, but she knew she had to make a decision or risk losing her friends. After all, she liked Zero, Takuma and Aidou in their own ways.
From all the conversations she'd had with Aidou over the weeks, she'd discovered that he was funny and a lot smarter than she'd first thought. He had a bright smile that she found extremely infectious and made her feel like nothing could get her down. But then, she couldn't help but compare him to Natsu at times because of his overly enthusiastic nature as well as his temper. This left her thinking of him as a great friend but not as someone she could have romantic feelings for.
Zero was different from everyone she'd known back in Fairy Tail, so she could have those types of feelings for him. He was also easy to be around because she had never been afraid of him, unlike she had with Takuma and Aidou. And even though he wasn't as open with his thoughts or emotions, he was pretty easy for Lucy to read so that didn't matter so much. She also liked how protective he was of her when she was in danger but didn't seem interested in stopping her from doing what she wanted to do. But his hatred of vampires made things difficult since most of her friends in this world were vampires, and she couldn't see herself being with someone who couldn't accept her friends.
But in the end, her mind had kept returning to Takuma. Even though he was a vampire, he had never scared her like Aidou had and even though Zero didn't like him, Takuma always tried to get along with him. She also couldn't help but think of her first day with the Night Class and how he had done everything he could to make sure she was safe, comfortable and protected so she wouldn't be scared. His smile was almost as infectious as Aidou's and his presence always had a way of putting her at ease. He was smart but easy to talk to as well. The more she had thought about it the easier it seemed to figure it out.
Lucy could help but smile to herself as she prepared the boxes of friendship chocolates for her spirits, they were wrapped in deep blue paper and tied with gold ribbon. The boxes for Zero, Yuuki and Head Master Cross were wrapped with the same deep blue colored paper but had red ribbons instead of gold. The boxes for her vampire friends were wrapped in cream colored paper and red ribbon to match their uniforms. The last box of chocolates for Takuma was the largest and wrapped in cream colored paper and both the gold and red colored ribbons. There was also a letter secured under the ribbons that she had ended up writing when she'd meant to take her nap.
When all that was done, she got on making the three lunches for her Yuuki and Zero. They had warned her that she may end up getting mobbed when they were having lunch that day, but Lucy didn't care. She could stand a few of her fanboys getting a little more excited so long as she got to sit and eat lunch with her friends. Besides, she was planning on giving them their chocolates during lunch since they were sure to be busy later when the Night Class were heading out for class.
Zero's POV
She was early today for lunch, probably did it on purpose so she wouldn't have to be deal with as many of the Day Class boys but there were still plenty around. It always surprises me how she handles all the guys trying to win her affections; but from what I learned about her past, she had been a debutante back in Earthland so dealing with guys like this was probably second nature for her.
Yuuki rushed up and gave her a hug before sitting down beside her. "Happy St. Xocolatl Day, Lucy!"
"Thank you! You too!" She smiled as she as she handed Yuuki her lunch. Then she turned to me and gave me that bright as sunshine smile that could melt even my icy heart. "Happy St. Xocolatl Day, Zero! I hope you're hungry. I made chicken curry, rice and dumplings for lunch today. I know that you're both going to be busy tonight so I wanted to make sure that you're ready for it!"
I heard Yuuki mumble in delight as she started shoveling food into her mouth. I couldn't help but smile as I lifted the lid to my lunch. She really does care about us and pays attention to what's going on. Plus, she's a great cook.
Unfortunately, it wasn't as peaceful of a meal as we were used to. Guys kept coming up to offer Lucy boxes of chocolates, flowers and love letters. After the fourth time, I was ready to deck someone but Lucy jumped up on the ledge of the fountain before I could do anything.
"May I have your attention for a moment, please?" She called out in a loud voice and then waited a moment before continuing. "I am very flattered that you wish to give me gifts for St. Xocolatl Day and I will gladly accept them, but I ask that you wait until after I am finished eating with my friends before doing that. After we are finished eating, I will let you know and at that point, please form a single file line so I can properly accept your gifts and give you all the thanks you deserve for your kindness."
Then, as if by magic, everyone bowed at the waist and moved away to form a single file line in anticipation for when we would finish eating. I couldn't help my dropjaw expression as Yuuki giggled on the other side of Lucy.
"I still have no idea how you do that," Yuuki said as she smiled at the blonde. "If we could get the girls to behave that easily, it would make our jobs a lot easier."
"Aidou says it has to do with magical pull I have. I still don't understand it since I never experienced anything like it back in Earthland and I don't like taking advantage of it since it makes me feel like I'm manipulating people. But I figure, so long as I don't ask anyone to do anything too weird and I do it politely, it should be okay."
And that right there is what truly makes her different from a vampire. All of those monsters have something similar to this and have no problem using it to their advantage, but she actually thinks about what she's doing and how it affects others.
Because of her promise, Lucy finished her lunch quickly and put the box away in the bag she'd carried them in. When she drew her hands out of the bag, she was holding three small boxes wrapped with blue paper and red ribbon.
"I made you guys friendship chocolates today, I hope you like them!" She smiled as she handed me one box and then handed Yuuki the other two. "The extra box is for your dad as a 'thank you' for helping me with the paperwork so I can stay here."
The words friendship chocolates didn't escape my notice, nor did the fact that she had given Yuuki and the Head Master the same kind of gift she'd given me. She doesn't feel the same... At that moment, my good mood from seconds before dropped and I wanted nothing more than to throw them away from me, but I couldn't do that to her.
Instead, I took a breath to steady myself and said "Thank you, Lucy," just like I promised her I would. This got her to smile at me in a way that I knew I'd never forget, even if I wish I could. It was a caring smile that had her cheeks turn slightly pink and her brown eyes glitter a little. That's when I knew for sure that she would never see me the way I wanted her to.
Having lost my appetite, I put my lunchbox in her bag and got ready to help her as the Day Class boys gave her chocolates. The guys were unorderly at first, but when Lucy announced that she would refuse any gifts from people who started fighting, everyone straightened up right away. When that was done, her bag was practically overflowing with chocolates and love letters and her arms were full of flowers.
That was the first time I can remember being glad that lunch with Lucy was over. All I wanted to do was disappear, but I had to go to class or else Yuuki would come looking for me again.
Lucy POV
I was so nervous when it came time to head to campus with the Night Class. I had already given the bag of chocolates to Virgo to give to all my spirits and the Spirit King. She had seemed very pleased with the gifts, saying how it had been a long time since anyone had given their spirits chocolates for St. Xocolatl Day and that I should expect a lot of White Day gifts when the time came.
But I was starting to worry, not only giving Takuma his chocolates but about the extra ingredient I had added into the vampires' chocolates. I had accidentally cut my finger while chopping up the chocolates and had decided, on a whim, to add a couple drops of my blood into the mix. I was pretty sure that they would enjoy them, if there was even enough in the mix that they could tell it was there, the thought occurring a little too late that it might be breaking the rules of "no drinking human blood" as well. I hoped that wasn't case; but if it was, it was already too late.
Hikaru was waiting for me outside of me room like he usually did when we would head to class. I smiled at him but he scowled at my hand. "Did you hurt yourself?"
"It's fine, I did it while I was chopping up the chocolate," I told him as I reached into the bag to pull out a box of chocolates for him. "Happy St. Xocolatl Day, Hikaru. And thank you for being my big brother and best friend, I don't know what I would have done if you weren't here with me."
He gave me one of those rare smiles that reached his eyes as he accepted the brightly wrapped box. "Thank you, Lucy."
"And you better be accepting any and all chocolates from the Day Class girls too. They take this stuff seriously, you know, and I won't let you be breaking any hearts," I teased him. He groaned in annoyance but I could tell he would do as I asked.
When we got to the main room, Aidou was immediately by my side and throwing an arm around my shoulders like normal. "Any of those boxes of chocolates for me?"
I couldn't help but laugh as I pushed him off of me. "There might be, but I'm not giving them out until we get to class."
"But you already gave Hikaru his chocolates," he whined.
"Because he was waiting for me at my room. You will get your chocolates, I promise, you just have to be patient and wait until we get to class. For now, focus on the chocolates you'll be getting from the Day Class girls."
There were more shouts and cheering than usual when the gates opened. I was surprised to see girls crowding behind gates, waiting to give the Night Class guys their chocolates. Aidou was so excited that he tried to rush ahead, but he stopped when Lord Kaname spoke, it was pretty funny. Yuuki moved the guys to their sanctioned gates and blew her whistle, signaling the start of the exchange.
I noticed that Akatsuki tried to slip away, but Takuma caught him and forced him to his gate. I kept an eye on Hikaru to make sure he didn't try to slip away too, but he was doing as I asked and was accepting every box of chocolates presented to him. Since everything seemed under control, I took a moment to look over at Yuuki, I knew the girl had to have chocolates for Lord Kaname but I was wondering if she would have the guts to give it to him.
Just as Lord Kaname was walking away, I thought she'd missed her chance. But then the group of fangirls she was holding back knocked her over and a small green box fell from her hand. Before I could say or do anything to help her, Zero had picked up the chocolates and tossed them to Lord Kaname. I couldn't help but smile at the silver haired guardian. Despite hating vampires, he really did care about Yuuki. Turning away, I hurried to catch up to the others.
Hikaru's arms were overflowing with chocolates from his admirers and he looked so annoyed by the quantity that I couldn't help but laugh. "Do you want some help carrying those?" He grumbled a 'yes' and I grabbed as many as I could hold without dropping any. When I looked around, it wasn't surprising to see that every male in the Night Class seemed to be in the same state Hikaru had been in. Especially Takuma, his armful of chocolates was so high that it nearly blocked his line of sight.
All of a sudden, I felt a little more self conscious about giving him the chocolates I'd made. They'll end up getting lost in the sea of sweets and love notes and he probably won't even recognize that they're from me, I thought as we made our way to the main building.
I discovered when I arrived, that it had become tradition to forgo classes for the day so everyone could look through the letters and gifts they had been given by the Day Class. This made me feel a little better about how Lord Kaname ran things, like he really did care about the humans they shared the school with.
I had barely sat down when Aidou snuck up beside me to drape his arm over my shoulders again. "I behaved and we're in class, does that mean I get those chocolates now?"
This caught me by surprise and I couldn't help but laugh. I'd honestly thought, after seeing the mountains of chocolates all of them had received, that they wouldn't have been interested in getting chocolates from me. But the blond's eager smile quickly proved me wrong and I reached into my bag to pull out one of the boxes wrapped in cream colored paper and red ribbon.
"Happy St. Xocolotl Day, Aidou! I hope you like them." He quickly snatched the box from my hands and I reached back in to grab more boxes so I could hand them out. Ruka and Rima were surprised when they received theirs, but still accepted them. Akatsuki, Senri and Lord Kaname were also surprised by their gifts but still said "thank you."
I hadn't even noticed that Aidou had opened the chocolates I had given him and was breathing in the scent. "These smell amazing, better than any chocolates ever! What did you do to them?"
Not wanting to come out and say that it was my blood, I shrugged and smiled. "That's my secret. I just hope they taste as good as you say they smell."
He didn't waste any time popping one of the chocolates into his mouth. As soon as it hit his tongue, I saw his eyes flash red before he groaned. His red eyes made me nervous but it didn't seem to be hostile, so I tried to stay calm. Instead, he wolfed down the rest of them in seconds, moaning the whole time like it was the most delicious thing in the world. After he finally swallowed, his red eyes locked on mine and he grinned in a way that made me feel a little nervous.
"I know what you did to those chocolate," he said in a rumbling voice that didn't really sound like him and only proved to make me even more nervous. "The scent was one thing, but tasting them... it's like nothing I've ever tasted before."
Aidou moved in front of me so quickly that I hadn't been able to track him with the naked eye. From the gasps around the room, I could tell that I wasn't the only one surprised by his advanced speed. Hikaru looked angry, thinking that I might be in danger from the blonde; but then Aidou gently took my hand in his and knelt before me.
O~kay~… did not see this coming and I don't think anyone else did either. Hell, even Lord Kaname looks confused by what's happening.
"Anytime in the future, if you need something done, give me some more of those chocolates and I'll do whatever you say. No questions asked," he told me before kissing the back of my hand.
This seemed to break through the confused fog that had come over the room. Hikaru came out of it first and pulled me away from the blonde to make sure he didn't try anything else weird. The others whom I had given chocolates to suddenly became highly curious about the chocolates I had given them and opened the boxes. They smelled them first before a few popped the chocolates into their mouths. Many had the same reaction that Aidou'd had and wolfed them down quickly.
Hikaru only ate a single piece before he hummed with delight and shut the box so he could stuff them in his pocket. "I see what he means, now. But I won't eat them all so quickly, I'll save them for as long as I can."
Lord Kaname was the only one who recognized what I had done to the chocolates by scent alone. He seemed shocked, but then his gaze met mine and I could tell almost immediately that he wanted to speak to me alone. I nodded and then got up to step out into the hallway, he followed me a moment later.
"You put your own blood in the chocolate," he said. It wasn't a question.
"I cut my finger while I was making them this morning and I added in a few drops on a whim," I told him, starting to feel guilty for what I'd done. "I know that it's against the rules to bite other students, but I figured I wouldn't be breaking the rules if I willingly added a few drops to the mix. I didn't even think it was enough to notice. It was only five drops for the whole batch."
The vampire was silent for a moment, his eyes locked on my expression. "Only five drops for the entire batch, you say? In that case, it seems that I have greatly underestimated the potency of your blood if that small amount could have such an effect on them and their abilities." Then he took a piece from the box and ate it, his eyes flashing red for a moment before fading back to their usual ruby-brown color. "If I had to describe the potency of your blood, I would almost put it on-par with a pureblood vampire's blood," he said with surprise.
"Is that good or bad?" I asked him.
"It speaks greatly of the power you hold within you, but it also means that you are in greater danger than I had originally anticipated. In the world of vampires, there are laws in place to protect purebloods from those who would abuse our powers. You, Lucy Heartfilia, fall outside of the sanctions of those laws and if others outside of this school were to discover your power, you very well could be stolen away from us."
To say that I was shocked was an understatement. I had figured out over the last couple weeks that Kaname Kuran was the most powerful vampire at the school, and probably in the world. If he said that my blood was really powerful, I had no choice but to believe him. And if he was saying that being this powerful was going to put me in danger... oh yeah, I was already starting to feel my hands shake.
"Then... what do we do?" I asked, willing my voice to remain steady.
"I cannot think of a long term solution at this moment, but I will alert you when I have. In the meantime," he suddenly smiled at me, "thank you for the chocolates. These may come in handy in the future if I find myself in need of a little added power."
"Um... sure. No problem," I said dumbly. I mean, really. What else could I have said?
We went back into the classroom and I was surprised to see that the only ones still there were Takuma, Hikaru, and Siren.
This surprised Kaname too. "Where is everyone?"
Takuma looked up from the love letter he'd been reading and glanced around the room in surprise. "Hm? Oh, right. No one else is here, are they? I wonder where they went?"
"Siren, go find them," Kaname ordered. The girl stopped reading her book and looked over to Lord Kaname, gave him a bow, and disappeared.
Takuma had put down the letter he had been reading to look at me, and I felt my heart speed up. "Is everything alright, Lucy?"
"I'm going to help Siren look for the others," Hikaru said, out of nowhere as he got up from his seat. I was surprised until I saw the look he gave me before he left the room.
Damnit! He could tell who I picked and now he's leaving me alone with him... Wait, is that a bad thing?
"I... uh... I have some chocolates for you too." I said quickly.
He smiled sweetly at me and got up from his seat to sit down beside me. I reached into my bag and pulled out the box of chocolates I had made for him.
Takuma's POV
I had been really jealous when I saw Lucy give Aidou and the others boxes of her special chocolates but not me. I had tried distracting myself by reading the letters that the Day Class girls had given me, but they were all the same. Praise of my beauty and poise, asking for dates and wanting to get close to me. But none of the girls really knew who I was, they were just obsessed with the idea of being with someone from the Night Class. That's probably why I hadn't noticed that the others had left until Lord Kaname had asked where everyone was.
It was only after Siren left that I put down the letter I'd been reading and looked at Lucy. Her expression was a mix between shell-shock and unease. "Is everything alright, Lucy?"
Before she could answer, Hikaru volunteered to help Siren look for the others and left the room. That's when she started to blush.
"I... uh... I have some chocolates for you too," she said quickly.
I couldn't help but smile at her, thrilled that I would get some of her chocolates as well. I moved to sit beside her as she pulled something out of her bag. When I saw it, I couldn't help but blush. My box of chocolates was larger that everyone else's and there was a letter tied to the top of the box by ribbons.
As I took the box from her, I could tell that she was about to run. I grabbed her hand to keep her in place as I slid the letter out from beneath the ribbons and was somehow able to open the letter one-handed to read it.
Takuma,
I don't know how to thank you enough for being there for me every step of the way since I arrived here at Cross Academy. I especially remember that first day. You protected me from Hikaru, did everything you could to make me feel comfortable in a new environment, and calmed me down when I was scared.
But something that really sticks out for me is how you are always smiling for me. It's different than when you smile at the Day Class girls or Lord Kaname. It's a sweet smile that makes my heart beat just a little faster but still lets me feel safe in your presence. That is who you are for me, you are comfort and sweetness, and I don't want that to go away.
You indicated last night that you were interested in having something more between us. I hope that's true, because it's true for me too.
Happy St. Xocolatl Day,
Lucy
I had always prided myself on being able to say the right thing in almost any situation, but Lucy's letter had left me utterly speechless. I couldn't believe that she felt more than friendship for me. I had honestly thought that she liked Aidou or Zero more than me, but this letter...
Not knowing what else to do, I used my grip on her hand to pull her toward me so I could wrap her small body in my arms. A moment later, she wrapped her arms around me as well and we just sat there holding each other in a comfortable silence.
My sweet, caring mage. I won't tell you that I love you, not yet at least. I'll wait until the time is right and I know that you love me back. But until then, we'll take things slow.
A/N: AND THE WINNER IS TAKUMA! (If you couldn't already tell, tee-hee) I hope you all like what I did with this chapter. For those of you who voted for Aidou or Zero, I'm sorry, but Takuma won in the tie-breaker and I had to go with it. Even if your favorite didn't win, I hope that you will still keep reading and reviewing!
