I didn't know how he would react.
But I didn't let go.
He looks at Tris.
"Aren't you the Stiff my son was staring at on visiting day?" My father asks, grimacing at Tris.
Alzas sighed. "Ohh, I knew I recognized you somewhere!" Looking at Tris, and scrunching up her nose.
I looked my father in the eye. "Don't call her that." I snapped.
He raised an eyebrow. "Is she your...?" He asked, noticing the emotion behind my words.
I nod, pecking her on the cheek.
Alzas decided to run her mouth again.
"I knew it!" She screeched, pointing to my father. "I told you he liked her! I told you!" Alzas laughs and points at my dad some more.
He looked embarrassed. "Wow." He said, stunned. "I didn't think that you actually liked a Sti- Abnegation."
"She's Dauntless." I snap at him. It was the second time I said that today.
He looked at me with a serious expression. "Don't talk to me that way, I am your father!" He yelled. The look in his eyes was pure anger. I was slightly nervous. His voice was loud and stern.
"Don't yell at him." Tris says, biting her lip. I fell stronger, next to Tris, easier, with her I almost didn't feel powerless when even doing something as simple as standing in the same space with him.
My father gave Tris a look, although he didn't say anything to her.
It wasn't like him, to hold back his words.
The look he gave her was so murderous, I distracted him with another topic.
"How's mom?" I asked, clearing my throat.
He looks back at me, a look of sadness on his face, and suddenly, I feel guilty for asking.
"She's a mess. Really misses you." He says, looking down. I do too.
I try to picture my mother sad. Her bright read hair tied back into a knot, her eyes with purplish bags around them. It doesn't work. And when it finally does, it becomes unbearable and I stop instantly.
"I'm sorry." I say, my eyes burning, and a lump forming in my throat. "I didn't know." I try to swallow the lump, but it comes back up.
Tris sees my expression and squeezes my hand. I squeeze back, but continue to look at my father. "I guess that makes me a traitor then." I say, biting my lip and instantly flinching because of the pain. I had bitten it bloody earlier today.
"You're not!" Alzas says, hugging my arm. "We'd pull out of Dauntless and take you back to us if we could."
I laugh at her.
"Dinny misses you, too." She said, getting serious. "She said that she saw you today, at Erudite Headquarters."
I nodded. I was at Erudite Headquarters, although I couldn't see Dinazed.
She was short, the same age as Alzas, 10. She had short blonde hair, and brown eyes. I could not remember how the rest of her face looked, I haven't seen her in so long. I upset me that I also had the chance too. I only wish Alzas behaved as well as Dinazed. She was delightful, endearing, she only had one flaw.
She was Winter's younger sister.
I remembered how Winter looked today, dirty clothed and covered in soot, her hair looking more black then chestnut. She looked so different from the girl that I saw in school, who sat at the cafeteria table with her legs crossed, who would look up from her book to smile and wave at me, who wore different colored glasses everyday, even if she had perfect vision.
"We ran into her sister today." I said.
Alzas's eyes went big. "Winter?"
I nodded. Alzas gasped, then she smiled.
"Did she say anything about your girlfriend?"
Tris laughed and I joined in.
It was one of the best parts of having a sister. She could get annoying, from time to time, well most of the time, but sometimes, she understood me. I was grateful for that.
At the Pit, Before Dinner.
"Gather around, everybody." Four says, a man next to him.
Once we all do, he places a hand on the man's shoulder. "This is Jacob."
Jacob smiles and waves his hand to us.
Four continues. "He will be taking over in Eric's place. Your new leader." I flinch at Eric's name before looking at Jacob.
His hair was short black, might I add, very short, but longer than an Abnegation would wear theirs, with light grey steaks in it. His eyes were a mint green, with brown specks around them. He had less piercings than Eric, but plenty of tattoos. I could barely see his skin.
"Hello everyone." Jacob says. His voice was surprisingly deep. Smooth.
He was sure to be a heartbreaker.
"Treat me as if you would treat any other Dauntless leader." He said, his expression changing into a serious on. "I will not tolerate disrespect."
Molly raised her hand.
"I'll take questions later." He said. "And yes, I am a Dauntless transfer."
Molly nodded and blushed.
Jacob seemed like a calm person, but a lot could hide in that.
I learned that from Four, who had pulled the heart stunt.
For now, I didn't know what to expect of Jacob, but I was sure to find out.
Something told me to stay for dinner, instead of skipping out to meet with Tris.
I sat a random table, hoping to not run in to any trouble with Molly.
Suddenly, a figure sits across from me.
It was Four.
I gave him the meanest look I could muster.
He looks at me with a calm expression. "Peter."
My expression doesn't change.
He sighs. "I would like to apologize for drawing an offensive symbol next to your and Tris's name."
My expression starts to soften, and I feel my mouth open.
I am shocked.
He apologized to me? It was understandable, and he does seem like the guy to do so, but to say something so big after stooping that low was...surprising.
I wasn't sure how to feel about Four.
I didn't know what to expect from him.
"It was stupid, and I just wanted a reaction." He said. "You didn't, and it made me realize how ridiculous I was acting." He shook his head. "I'm your instructor, I want you to be able to trust me."
"It was stupid. It really was." I said, cutting a piece off of my slice of Dauntless cake.
He stares at me, and I don't hesitate when I stare right back, chewing my cake.
He sighs. "Peter, I won't beg for your forgiveness." He said. "I just want you to know that I should not have done what I did, and that I'm upset at myself at it." He places a hand on my shoulder and stands up.
"Come sit with us." He said, pointing to a table in the distance. When I see Tris sitting there, that is all it takes for me to get up with my plate and follow Four to the table.
When we get there, I see Christina's smile turn into a look of accusation.
At least it wasn't a glare. We were making progress.
"What are you doing here?" She says, putting her fork down.
I sat in a seat next to Al. "Four invited me over." I said to her, smirking.
Her head turned to Four. "Why would you do that?" She asked, her eyes widening.
"Because I am his instructor, and because I can." Four responds.
Christina doesn't say anything.
I hold back a laugh.
I catch Tris looking at me, and she grins. I grin back at her and look away instantly, remembering what Caleb said.
Christina looks at Will with a smile. "Pass me the salt?" She asks him, picking up her fork again.
He nods and gives her the salt sprinkler. She dumps it onto her fries, making Will laugh. He pecks her on the cheek.
I don't show my frown, but I want too.
I knew that Tris and I could never do the same.
