When we are out, I immediately grabbed my head.
My breathing was shaky as I remembered how the simulation ended.
I brought my knees to my chest and breathed.
Tomorrow would be Hell. I could barely take today.
Sure, we had improved, time wise, but our arguments had got us nowhere.
I had tried my best, but that didn't seem to work unless everybody was doing the same. I had to keep in mind that I wasn't alone.
I clutched my head tighter.
"Tomorrow will be the last day of stage two." Four says, pulling up a stool.
The sound of his voice makes me jump. I didn't hear much inside of the simulation. Close to nothing, actually. I closed my eyes as Four spoke.
"Your rankings on stage two will determine who stays and who gets cut."
I pull my head out of my knees, and look at Four.
I prayed that Tris would be staying. I didn't need her to be with Winter, factionless and my ex.
I needed her. She needed me.
I let my head fall back onto the chair. I needed to come up with a strategy. Something just in case an unexpected obstacle comes in the way. Such as me not being able to hear.
I feel Four gently pull the cords out of my head, and I cringe. I resist the urge to slap his hand away. I could have done it myself. My teeth grind together and push myself back into a sitting position. As Four leaves, I pick at my nails. They were dirty.
When was the last time I had showered? The last time any of us had, actually? I sighed and pushed the thought down. I would shower before or after lunch.
Four typed something into the monitor, and turned back to us. "You guys have improved," He said, taking a seat in the stool.
I silently laughed. "Knew that already."
He turned to me, along with the rest of the room.
"Excuse me?" He said, his brows rising. "I don't remember asking you to comment."
I rolled my eyes. "Am I not allowed to state an opinion?"
He looked at me with no emotion, although I was pretty sure what he was feeling towards me. I smirked, feeling as if I had ended the conversation, that is until he made another statement.
"You should watch your words around me," He said calmly. "Keep in mind, I control your rankings."
I gave him a sarcastic worried look. I know that it was meant to shut me up, scare me. But I couldn't help but to comment again. "I thought that the simulations do."
Four gives me a look, and stands up. He walks towards my chair, and looks me in the eye before saying,
"Listen here, Peter. This is Dauntless." He started. "If I wanted to put up with Candor smart-mouths, I would have joined their faction."
I shivered. The last time I had been spoken that way to was by my father.
Four sat back down in the stool, and continued speaking to us.
"Over here, loves!"
Marlene calls us to sit at her table for lunch, food in her mouth as she does. She was standing on one of the seats, waving her arm around to get out attention.
She was a Dauntless-born alright.
I grabbed Tris's hand as we walked toward Marlene's table. Marlene sat back down, next to Uriah to be exact. He smiled at her as she did.
Tris and I sat at the table, releasing each other hands. I put my plate on the table, and looked at Marlene.
"Hey Mars." I say, biting into my burger.
Tris grins at her. "Hi, Marly."
Marlene raises an eyebrow. "What's up with the nicknames?"
I shrug. I didn't know, or care. It was a greeting, it wasn't meant to be taken too seriously.
She rolls her eyes. "M'kay, Petey, Triscuit."
I grinned at her. "Whatever." I say, snatching on of her chips, and putting it into my mouth.
"Dude!" She threw a tater tot at me.
I laughed and caught it with my mouth.
She sticks out her tongue and moves her plate closer towards her.
I rolled my eyes. "It sucked anyways."
Uriah clears his throat. "We didn't see you at breakfast today?"
I smile, remember breakfast with Tris this morning. It wasn't the happiest, but I got to spend time with her. I've learned to appreciate the time that I've been able to spend with her after she avoided me for a whole afternoon, and ever since or secretive relationship had ended.
I grabbed her hand as I thought of her.
"Oh I see." Uriah said, winking at Tris.
She laughed and pecked my cheek and smiled at me.
I grin and hold her hand tighter.
"Anywho, let's get into the simulation. How'd you guys do?"
I could feel Tris's hand go stiff. I stroked it gently, attempting to calm her down.
I cleared my throat. "We did fine." I say, the hairs of my neck raising. "How'd you do?"
Suddenly, Zeke and Lynn appear, plates in their hands. "Awful." Zeke says, sitting down. "Lynn helped nobody but herself."
I grinned. I barely knew her, but it sounded like her.
Lynn slapped Zeke's arm. "Shut up." She said. "Yea, I did."
Zeke laughed. "Yea right! Here's how it really went down..."
I sigh as Zeke launches into his story, not paying any attention. I think about the challenges that tomorrow will bring.
As the water turns on, I close my eyes and sigh. The hot water runs down my back, giving me a sense of relief. I stand facing away from the shower, the water barely reaching my chest. I turn around so it does, and close my mouth, so that the water does not go in.
I reach for the soap bar, and scrub in every place I can reach. I sigh again as the water washes away all of the soap and dirt away, along with the memories of today.
I ran my wet hand over my face, scrubbing my cheeks. Who was I kidding? The day wasn't over just yet. It was close, but not yet. I blinked, opening my eyes for the first time ever since I steeped into the tub.
The heat of the bathroom makes my throat go dry, so I shampoo my hair before quickly stepping out of the shower and getting dressed.
