QUESTION: Should I add the war? Authors have said it might mess up the story, so don't...but I want everybody's opinion.
As I run to Pit, I hear gunshots.
Training.
I quickly grab a gun and stand in front of a target, that nobody else is, which is next to Molly. She sees me and clears her throat.
"Hey." She says, shooting at the target.
I attempt to make conversation with her, and respond with a simple, "Hi."
She looks at me as she shoots again.
I look away and face the target. With a sharp pull, the bullet ends up close to the target but not in it. I sigh, and try again. After multiple tries, I am sure I hit the target at least once, but from the distance, I see that I haven't.
My teeth grind together, and I run my hand through my slightly wet hair. I had taken a shower only a few minutes ago.
Molly taps my shoulder. "Like this," She says.
I watch her as her stance changes, and her shoulders rise. She points to the target, and with a loud bang, the bullet not only hits the target, but goes through it.
I nod and do the same. I get closer to the target, but the bullet does not hit it.
I shoot the board once again, out of anger, and to my surprise, this time it works. I blinked.
Wow.
I quickly hide my shock, and shoot again.
It hits the target. Again
I smirk to myself.
"Don't look so smug." Molly says, shooting the board. She misses the target completely. She quietly swears under her breath.
I laugh at her and shoot the target. I don't hit it, but I get the outline.
"Ha." She says.
I roll my eyes. "It was closer than yours."
She shoots again, and misses the target. "Shit."
I laugh more at her. She scrunches up her nose, and I am reminded of Alzas.
My laughter slows down, and I sigh.
"Initiates!" Jacob calls. We all drop our guns and turn our attention towards him. "I'm sure that you have experienced the little mix up with the simulation."
I tense up. He meant Tris shattering the glass the first time we entered stage two.
My eyes go wide.
"It turns out, it was the serum. It did not last long enough, and you all got out." He started. "Whatever you saw, was not real."
I squinted. Was he serious? Tris told me that she was Divergent, meaning that she could manipulate the simulation. She told me that we all got out because of her. It made sense, none of our heart rates were slow enough to get out. I got out quicker with her than I ever would have by myself.
Was she lying? She could not have been, she woke me up at 11:00 just to tell me. I pushed the thought away.
Was he lying? He had to be. He was. But if her Divergence was so important, enough to make people including her trainer, want to kill her, then why would he defend her? Did he want to get killed too?
It then occurred to me that he might be Divergent.
I breathed heavily.
"Continue." He says, nodding his head. "I just thought that I would clear it up for you."
I look him in the eye before turning back around to face the target.
I end my meal with a loud burp.
"Ewwaa!" Tris squeals, pinching her nose.
I laugh, exhaling on her.
"Oh my gosh, Peter!" She says, pushing me away. I laugh louder and my head falls onto the table. I hold my stomach, to calm my laughter, but it doesn't work, so I stop.
When I stop laughing, Tris gives me a look. I feel bad for her and pull her into my chest.
"I'm sorry." I say, stroking her head.
She shoves away from my chest. "Whatever."
I peck her forehead.
"I am."
She looks up at me, and for a second, we stare at each other, just as we did in the simulation. I grab her waist and pull her closer. We don't break our stare as I do. Suddenly, Tris dives in and presses her lips onto mine.
She quickly pulls away, her eyes wide. I release her hip, afraid that I have offended her.
"Wooo!" I hear Zeke's voice, coming towards our table, a large grin on his face. "I'm sorry if I interrupted something."
Tris looks down at the seat, blushing. I look at Zeke. Following him were Uriah, Marlene, Lynn, and another girl. She looked familiar. I watched as they sat at our table.
Uriah gave Tris and I a look. "You two intend on avoiding me don't you?"
Marlene shoved him. "Shut up, they're a couple. They need privacy."
Uriah rolled his eyes. "But still."
I picked at my plate. On it had a small amount of contents.
A burger, fires, and a slice of cake. Average Dauntless food.
"Are we getting annoying?"
I look up from my plate. Uriah looks at me, in a way that makes me feel guilty. I bite my lip and shake my head. I tell the truth. "No."
Uriah shrugs and grins at Marlene. "Told you."
"He just doesn't wanna hurt your feelings." Says Marlene, tossing her hair back.
Uriah gives Marlene a look. "Peter wouldn't lie, he's Candor!"
"Was Candor." She replies.
I sigh as Uriah and Marlene argue, bringing my knees to my chest in the seat.
As Tris and I walk into the dorm, I am sure that the night will be entertaining.
I slowly notice how none of the Dauntless transfers were in the Pit, eating dinner.
All of them were sitting in a circle in the middle of the dorm room floor.
I laughed obnoxiously, and grinned at them. "What's this about?"
Christina looks at me, a serious expression on his face. "Were strategizing." She says. "For the simulation."
Al waves us over. "Do join us."
Before I can think, I feel Tris pull me over, making me sit next to her.
"Alright. First off, disabilities." Christina begin. "What couldn't you do?"
I feel as if I am smaller than her. As if she was a mother and I was her son. As if she is a leader and I am simply a follower. I don't like the feeling, but Tris doesn't seem to mind, so I push it down.
Will calls out. "I couldn't see."
"You made that clear." I say, smirking as I remember his tripping and falling into multiple things in the simulation.
He glares at me.
"I couldn't move my right arm." Molly says.
"I couldn't move my left." Al said.
Drew clears his throat. "I couldn't speak."
"You barely do outside of the simulation." I whisper to Tris, mocking Drew. She giggles lightly, looking at him.
He gave us a look, grinding his teeth together.
I lick my lip, when I did, it didn't sting. The bite was gone.
"I couldn't move left leg." Christina.
"My right one." Tris says.
Everybody's attention turns to me. I am the only one who did not comment.
I turn to Christina. "Couldn't hear."
She nods.
"Alright, let's come up with something." She starts. "Molly can be Al's left arm, Al can be Molly's right."
I raise my eyebrow. "But it isn't certain that they would find each other first."
She nods, and continues. "They'll find each other at some point."
I roll my eyes. "Let's see how that works out."
She mouth presses into a line and I know that she is upset. I don't take back what I said.
I noticeably shift closer to Tris, wrinkling my nose.
"The simulation is about teamwork, okay?" She said. "If you were to jump in front of someone else's fear in order to protect them, we would still be in the sim!" She shakes her head. "I don't think you get it. We get out at the same time. Which means, each of us have to use our minds together, as a whole."
I nod and try to understand. I make sure to listen to every idea that goes around the circle, and for the rest of the night, we prepare or minds for the horrors tomorrow would bring.
The final test.
