Chapter 10

I snuggled myself further into the covers that lay on top of me, I could hear voices in the background but my eyes still felt heavy with sleep despite the fact my body was stiff, suggesting that I had slept for a long time.

I rolled over, ready to star fish myself in bed as usual, only to be met with the cold hard wooden floor that was now pushed against my face. Trying to pick myself up I was confused over several issues. First why I had I fallen out of bed, I hadn't done that since I was at least 7. Secondly I didn't have wooden floor anywhere in my apartment, so why was I now rubbing my nose from the hard impact?

"Ouch" I muttered as I felt a pain go through my hand. I looked down and saw that my hand was heavily bandaged.

"What the..." just like that the events from the previous day came flooding back.

As I took in my surroundings I noticed that I hadn't been in my bed at all, but in fact a small couch which was pushed up against a pale blue wall. I spun around and slipped slightly on the blankets that had fallen to the floor, it was then I spotted a bed and the person in it. Mason.

I stumbled my way over, taking in the sight in front of me. His chest was heavily bandaged with bruises covering his torso, his hair was messy and his face pale along with dark circles under his eyes. The machine next to him indicated his improving health. I drifted over and began examining paper work left on the bedside table. As I stood there studying his charts and vitals a low drawn out groan caught my attention.

"I-i-oo-let" Mason fingers twitched slightly.

"Vi-o-let" he mumbled again this time a lot clearer.

He began to open his eyes slightly as his hand appeared to twitch towards mine.

I began to panic. Yes I saved him and I was incredible glad that I had and yes I did kiss him but I don't believe that it meant anything. I knew I wasn't in love with him, that much I was sure off. I considered him to be somewhere between a friend and an acquaintance. However here he was asking for me while I remained quietly at his side.

"Violet" he mumbled again he voice was defiantly becoming clearer.

I took a calming breath before responding.

"Yes" I whispered turning to look at him but avoiding his gaze.

His eyes fluttered open as he let out another groan.

"I'll get something for the pain" I said knowing full well that this would send him back to sleep.

"No, want to keep awake" he replied disjointedly, as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

"O-kkkay" I dragged out the word.

"Can you remember what happened?" I asked him, as he tried to sit himself up. After a couple of grunts and groans I took pity on him.

"Would you just stay put" I replied in a exhausted tone. I reached beneath his bed and pulled out a remote and began pushing an arrow button pointing up.

Mason instantly stopped struggling as he felt the bed incline.

"Can you remember what happened?" I asked again, handing him a glass of water.

Mason took a few sips of water and frowned into his lap. "Umm-I-I remember running and the guys, they got really scarred, I remember thoughts... something awful happened, there was swearing and screaming, there was so much going on" he replied.

It was then he looked up at me, understanding coloured his features and his eyes grew round in horror, before his head started darting in every possible direction taking in the scene before him. The hospital equipment, the medicines and the bed he was in. He then threw his sheet aside and looked down at himself. Starting with his legs one of which was in plaster, his eyes travelled up to his hips and abdomen both were coved in gaze due to deeper cuts and server bruising. His eyes settled on his chest as he ran his hand over the bandages.

"What the hell happen to me?" he asked his eyes finding mine.

I looked at him, he was beginning to tremble, before I could say anything in response to his question he started to shake uncontrollably.

Frozen in fear I knew what was happening.

I was willing myself to say something, anything at this point.

"Mason -" I stuttered, only to be interrupted by the door bursting open and the forms of Tyler, Jake and Ben to appear in the little blue room, with Mr and Mrs Lahoot watching terrified just beyond the door.

"Mason, you need to calm down ok? I know this is hard mate but you have to, we can talk anything you want-" Ben was trying to get through to him but it didn't seem to work, he was now blurring at the edges. So of course i did the sensible thing of taking a step closer. Jake moved to me quickly and was tugging me from the room, when I spotted something.

"Oh no" I muttered looking to the bandages on his chest where there was a crimson stain spreading.

"Jake get off" I said angrily trying to get back to Mason.

"Where are you going it's not safe-"Jake started.

I didn't take orders especially not from Jake.

I put my hand on Mason's shoulder before launching into speech.

"Look at me!" I shouted squaring up to Mason who's shaking only slowed enough so that he wasn't blurred at the edges now.

"You are going to end up killing yourself; I am not going to tell you to calm down, because quite frankly that's not helping. Now I understand that you are confused and pissed off, but you've technically died once already in the last twenty four hours let's not make it twice, I can't promise that I can bring you back again. So suck it up and stay still while I sort your chest out"

I turned my back on him to collect supplies from one of the medical draws that had appeared here over night. Arms full I spun around to face the many occupants of the room, all of whom were stood there quietly with looks of shook plastered on their faces.

"His chest wound re-opened, I wasn't lying when I said he might end up killing himself , you just needed a shock factor to see straight , right?" I asked Mason, who was looking at me in disbelief.

I busied myself by removing the blooded dressings and then assessing the wound.

"So are you feeling up for some Q and A time?" I asked him, as I started to apply butterfly stitches over the incision site.

He nodded his head slowly "yeah I need to know what happened" he replied taking deep breaths while his form quivered slightly.

I began to unwrap the bandages as the guys and his parents pulled up seats ready to talk to Mason.

I listened as they explained how they were hunting down a rogue new vampire, how difficult it was to fight him, the tactics they used that failed, how Mason tried to fight by jumping at him but was thrown off into the distance a good 40 ft before crashing into a tree, whose branch impaled him. They went on to explain how half the pack went on to kill the vampire through rage and how the others brought Mason here.

I had just finished re-bandaging his wound when Jake began talking.

"We were freaking out, Carlisle was away and so was Edward, we couldn't take you to a hospital, I mean what would we say? So you see my nephew here? Well he regularly turns into a wolf and today a vampire got the best of him? Anyway there are the issues with the pain killers and healing, so that option was out. So we went to find Violet-"

"Who was sleeping quite peacefully before two large men nearly took my door of its hinges and scared me witless " i interjected, as i doubled checked the bandages covering Masons chest.

Jake smiled before continuing with the story "we brought Violet back here, hoping that she could help you. Violet was absolutely amazing, she sorted your head, removed the branch and stitched you up as good as new" Jacob went on as I felt my cheeks turn warm under the praise.

"It was weird though, one second you were all right the next you were... well dead" Jake carried on meeting Masons' eyes. "It was horrible, wait no it wasn't even horrible it was... it was ... well I can't even find words to describe it." He said in thick voice before carrying on.

"Then Violet-"I cut Jake off mid sentence.

"Tried to revive you, I used the defibrillator pads but I just could get you back. I literally ran to the door and the next thing I know your heart has started beating again" I was purposely not meeting the eyes of anyone in room, knowing full well I had left a huge key point out of the story.

"So I have tried something different with your chest wound, you do however have to promise me that you won't get angry. I can't make it heal with wishful thinking." I gave him a stern look as he gave me a small nod of his head.

"Right I think that's enough stimulation for now, you're still very unwell and have a long road to recovery" I said giving him my -I'm the doctor don't you dare disagree-look.

Mason's parents both gave him a hug; Rachel planted a kiss on her sons' forehead before leaving the room. The guys all gave him a soft pat on the shoulder before saying goodbye and letting him rest.

I was just about to follow when Mason called me.

"Violet, can I... can I have a word?" he stuttered.

"Sure" I replied sitting myself down on the couch on which I had slept. My stomach felt knotted as my hands began to sweat. What did Mason want talk about?

"Thank you" Mason said simply. He opened and closed his mouth several times obviously wanting to say something. After a while he appeared to give up and instead meet my gaze. After a moment of feeling awkward i made to get up and leave.

"So I had this strange dream last night or maybe an insight to the future, or maybe it was heaven as i guess i was dead, anyway –" he said shaking his head "-whatever it was I wanted to talk to you about it." I felt myself go still as my eyes widened. I couldn't do this now, I needed time to work out my thoughts and feelings. I wasn't in love with him, but I did like him as a person. However at the same time, I didn't not think about the imprint and I couldn't work out what to do with this mythical connection that I may or may not what anything to do with. Yes I defiantly needed more time.

"So I thought" mason began breathing in a large breath and then wincing from pain "that we should, I mean we could well... give the imprint a go?" I stood frozen fear on my face. Did he know that I had kissed him?

Mason read my expression wrong, it wasn't the suggestion that caused me panic but the thought that he might know what I had done and demand an answer that I couldn't give.

"We don't have too.. i just thought..." mason trailed off a look of sadness mingled with pain was clear on his face.

"I could've of sworn that in my dream if I survived I would be given an opportunity to prove myself to you and in return you agreed to give the imprint a try" he mumbled. "I should've know it was a dream he replied his eyes on the floor.

I took in the sad sight in front of me. He was a good, caring and kind hearted person who deserved happiness in his life. I knew I could make him happier, I could try and be friends with him, heck maybe even best friends. Heaven knows I owed him for causing him so much hurt and if I admitted it to myself I could do with some happiness in my life. Working none stop and having a limited number of acquaintances (not friends I never really got close to people) was rather upsetting.

"Mason-"I began slowly "that actually happened" I finished.

He turned to face me, his eyes dull. "you really don't have to lie" he sighed "I know I'm not well but lying to me won't help."

"I'm not lying, I promised to give it a go" I replied our eyes meeting.

"Then why did you look horrified?" he asked.

"I thought you were on about something else" I said slowly. I shook my head a bit trying to get my bearings. "Mason I would like to give the imprint a go" I replied firmly "I'm not saying dates or love or anything but I think we should get to know each other at least" I finished

Mason was obliviously shocked.

"Okay" he said.

"Right" this was so odd, my head was screaming at me but my heart felt like it was glowing.

"You rest up, Carlisle will be around later to check up on you" I said curtly as I walked to the door.

"Bye" Mason said a huge smile on his face.

I nodded to him before closing the door and taking a deep breath. "Okay" I muttered to myself as I turned around. Oh for heaven's sake I had completely forgotten that outside this room sat many shape shifters and a half vampire.

Keeping my head high and my pride in tact I strolled to the front door. "The patient is stable and now resting" I addressed the room of beaming smug faces.

I pulled the door open and spoke to the group "Please don't fill in the gap" I whispered referring to the story where I had conveniently forgotten to mention the kiss.

Paul seemed to understand. "It will come out at some point" he replied in a kind tone.

"I know, but just not yet" I replied giving him a smile.

Paul offered me a lift back to my apartment which I happily took. His car screeched to halt outside, I waved him off and made way to the familiar looking door it was with relief that I fell into a heap on the threadbare couch where I thought about the last couple of days.
