I hear Christina sprint into the dorm, and I follow quickly behind her.
This wasn't the simulation. This was real. And we were in danger. I don't think, I instantly shake Tris, hoping to get her awake. She stirs and yawns slowly. "Get up!" I yell, shaking her more. Her eyes don't open, but she says something lowly.
"I'm up." She smacks her lips together. "I'm up."
I pull her up. "The compound's on fire!"
At this her eyes instantly open, and we run out of the dorm. The smoke becomes thick as we leave, and I clutch my chest. I was letting to much of it in. The steps are covered in flames, so we jump into the pit. I yell as we do. I land with a crunch, and I felt searing pain in my knee. I landed on ash. I stood back up and clutched it. Tris releases my hand and we run towards the exit. Standing there is a wall of flames. It spreads rapidly, and I understand why Tris let go of my hand.
We had to go separate ways.
I hear her gasp, and cough instantly after. She had spit out something before running back to the firelight steps.
"What are you doing?" I call out, hacking.
She wipes sweat off of her head. "Christina and Will are still back there!" She yells back, pointing to the dorm.
I give a her a look that screams, Are you insane?
She ignores we and runs scales the Pit wall to get back to the dorm.
I follow her instantly on instinct. When we get there, I see Christina coughing up a storm next the Will, trying to wake him up. I run towards her and shake Will violently.
"Get up!"
He does, and as soon as the scent of flames enter his nose, he violently hacks. I lift him up, and he runs to the exit. Tris leads him out, and I follow them, thinking that Christina will follow us.
She doesn't.
I turn back around, and see that she is laying on the floor, coughing. She stops coughing for a while, and I know that she won't live very long. I turn back around to the door. I needed to leave. Now.
But something was holding me back.
I could save her in the simulation, for my benefit, but why couldn't I do it now? It was selfish, but I wanted to leave her. I did. She coughed again. This time blood. She didn't have much long.
What about Tris? How would she feel if she knew that the whole reason we came here was to save Will and Christina, and I couldn't do that? She would be sad, angry. I didn't want to think about it.
I ran back to Christina and threw her over my shoulder.
"You-" My cough interrupts me. "Owe me big time."
I ran back to the exit, and she holds onto my stomach as we do. I resist the urge to slap her hands away, and clutch her abdomen closer to my shoulder. She coughs more, and I feel something hot go on my shirt.
Christina just threw up on me.
"You bitch!"
I hear her murmur something, but I don't quite catch it. I make myself believe that it is an apology, and jump into the Pit. My knee feels ten times worse. When we get there, I see Tris and Will. I place Christina on he feet and Will runs next to her, checking to see if she's alright. I run towards the fire blocked exit, clutching my knee. It felt as if it could fall off at any minute.
It would probably feel better than what I was feeling right now. I turn to Tris, she was on her knees, clutching her stomach. I went to go comfort her and pull her up so that we could find a way out like she did to me in the simulation, but I hear a scream, and I turn to it.
A rapid fire was charging at Christina and Will, who were next to each other. They seemed to be frozen, un-moving and staring at the fire.
I sprung at Christina, shoving her away from the fire. She made it safely into the center of the Pit.
Will isn't so lucky. He falls onto the outside of the fire and twitches graphically, falling into the fire. He is gone, just like that.
Christina yells, and tries to jump into the fire. I instantly yank her back by her shirt, and she thrashes wildly.
"Will!" She yells at the flames, as if they were living when they took Will from her.
I felt pity for her, I would be doing the same if it were Tris, I knew so.
It's odd, the Pit has a Chasm, and yet we are still surrounded by fire.
It makes no sense to me.
Eventually she stops and I let go of her shirt. She turns to Tris, who is still on her knees coughing. Her expression turns fierce. For a second, I am scared.
She quickly turns away, and wipes her tears away. I look around. We were officially surrounded, by fire, each of us coughing violently. As the flames come closer to us, I think we will not make it. We will die here, in Dauntless Headquarters.
That is until I see a mist of white puff, shooting in our direction.
A fire extinguisher.
Why didn't I think of that? I see the person shooting it at us.
Max.
He sees us too, because he waves us in is direction, to the exit. We run past him, and I take one last look at the compound before leaving, my eyes stinging.
We stand on the train platform, waiting for the train to come. Four is announcing to us what will happen next, where we will be staying until Dauntless Headquarters is repaired; Erudite Headquarters.
The Dauntless compound should be fixed in no time, it was underground.
Many of us made it out of the fire, others like Will, Marlene, and Jacob weren't so lucky. I wasn't sure how Jacob didn't make it, he was a leader, he lived in an apartment.
Maybe his death was on purpose, he could have been Divergent, after all.
But now I'll never know.
