"Holy shi-" I stop myself right in time, and clear my throat. "Hi Caleb."
He looks at me like I am another person, which I kind of am. I am in Erudite clothing, not Dauntless.
He blinks before responding. "Wow," He blinks again. "Hi Peter."
He gives me a look of sorrow. "I'm sorry about what happened last night."
I nod, not responding.
"How is Beatrice?"
Who is Beatrice again? Oh yeah, Tris. The one I was looking for.
I am about to respond, when he says something else.
"Which reminds me," He said, his voice getting low. "I need to speak to you about her."
The look he gives me is serious. I bit my lip and nod.
He clears his throat. "I fully support you and Beatrice, but, she is my sister."
Here we go. The big brother talk.
I try not to sigh as he begins. Suddenly, a short haired blonde woman shouts my name and waves her arm around. She is Erudite. I am rescued from Caleb's talk.
Thank you short-haired lady.
She runs up to me an pecks me on the cheek before I can see her face. I instantly pull away. Her hair was blocking her eyes.
"Err, sorry." I say. "I already have a girlfriend."
She laughs and pulls her hair out of her eyes.
It was Tris.
I feel my eyes go wide. "You cut your hair?"
She laughs at my expression and nods, smiling widely.
I haven't seen her this happy since last night, the night that she was kidnapped by Drew, Molly, and Al, and the night that she lost one of her friends, Will. Or two, the look Christina gave Tris when she didn't save Will was deadly. Frightening.
I kiss her cheek. I did not want to spoil her mood. "I like it."
She nods and grabs my hand.
She looks odd, in the a short blue Erudite dress that exposes her knees. The dress is sleeveless, and begins at her neck, not revealing her chest. Her shoes were blue flats, showing her pale feet.
I grinned. Proper.
"The Erudite will be meeting with us here in a few minutes." She says, looking up at me.
I nodded. It is why Four gave us a specific place to be, at what time.
Caleb cleared his throat, and looked at Tris.
"Beatrice," He said, raising his eyebrows. "I believe Peter and I were participating in a dialogue."
Erudite language. I rolled my eyes.
"Dauntless members!" A blonde Erudite female calls from the center of the room. Jeanine Matthews. "Erudite!"
Tris tugs at my arm. "You guys can talk later." She says, pulling me to the center of the room, where the Erudite woman is. Caleb follows behind us, looking straight ahead. This is his meeting, too. Our group surrounds her too, I recognize Dauntless faces. Uriah's, Lynn's, Tori's, and Zeke's. A cloud of more random Erudite come behind us as she speaks, and we all listen as she begins.
Jeanine speaks in a loud an clear voice, so that we all hear her.
"Due to the unfortunate accident of the Dauntless members losing their compound, we must provide them with a space to live. Fret, do not, it is only temporarily." She pauses, and make sure that all of us are listening. I hear murmurs from the crowd as she says this, and I purse my lips together. "As of now, the Erudite and Dauntless treated equals."
I knew what she meant. No nicknames or Dauntless slang. No names such as 'nose' or 'know-it-all's'
I felt bad for Lynn. This would be hard for her.
We would have to share the same food, the same clothing, the same techniques, the same everything.
"Our faction hopes that you enjoy your stay at our headquarters." When she finishes, she bows, and everyone applauds. I applaud late, but I still do.
When I sit at the Erudite tables with Tris, it is odd. The tables are blue not black. I am not used to their cafeteria.
I pick at my oddish Erudite food, and I feel remorse. I miss Dauntless cake and some sugary juice. Not brain food and fizzy drinks. I take a bite of something on my plate. It taste bland, little seasoning.
I spit it out. I didn't know what I had just eaten, but I did know that it tasted awful.
Tris laughed at me expression. "That bad?"
I nod and gag. It was worse than how Abnegation food looked.
She scooped up something green and leafy, with something slimy slipping out of it.
"What is it?" I ask, looking at it with wild eyes.
She smiles at me. "They call it pasta."
I nodded and took a bite out of it.
"Mhhm." I took another bite.
It wasn't bad.
Before I know it, I am taking multiple things from her plate, grinning every time I do.
"Get your own!" She says, pulling her plate closer to her. I stop and my grin goes away.
This situation is familiar. It is the same one I had with Marlene before she...passed.
Marlene is gone now.
Tris pushes the plate back towards us when she sees my expression. "I'm only kidding." She said, getting serious. "I don't mind sharing."
I kiss her forehead. "It's nothing." I say. "I just thought of Marlene."
I am surprised at how my voice is stern when I mention her name.
Tris nods and hugs my waist. I hug back and smile in her short hair.
I hear someone sit at our table.
Uriah.
The blue clothing is bright against his face, making his eyes more noticeable.
He puts his plate down, and folds his hands together.
"I do apologize if I interject your hug, but I would like to address you two in a-"
Tris interrupts him. "Speak normally, please." She has a goofy grin on her face, and Uriah smiles.
He releases his hands and sighs. "What idiot decided to burn down our headquarters?"
I have to laugh. Tris laughs too, and takes a bite out of her pasta. Uriah pulls a bag of chips from his pocket and pulls it open, popping the chips into his mouth. I recognized them from the Dauntless Headquarters.
"Erudite have our chips?"
He shakes his head no. "I saved them from the kitchen of our compound before they got burned."
Yep, that was Uriah all right.
I nod. "Gonna share?"
"Hell no!" He responds, clutching the bag to his chest. I reached for the bag, and snatched it with all my might. It slipped out of his hands, and spilled all over the table.
I instantly grabbed them when the hit the table, as did Uriah. Suddenly, Lynn, Zeke, Shauna, and Hector appear at our table. Lynn sees the position that we are in and sighs.
"..."
Ehh...I don't know how to feel about this chapter...
I don't hang around many Erudite, so I don't know how they talk...
School starts tomorrow. :( Plop.
