Hi guys! I'm in the process of moving, so I won't have wi-fi for a few days. :( This isn't the last chapter I'll be posting, but only for a whileI won't be posting as frequently.
None of us respond, looking ridiculous in our soaked Erudite clothing.
Four gives us a look, and I know he wants an answer from either of us. We remain silent, and he sighs.
"I asked you a question." He said calmly. "I'd like and answer."
Uriah is the first to speak.
"We didn't want to do the simulations." He didn't say it loudly, but Four heard it.
He clenched his jaw, but still spoke in a smooth voice. "That wasn't my question," He said. "Where have you been?"
I look at the floor, avoiding Four's eyes; I can still feel his eyes boring into my head. Suddenly I hear a feminine robotic voice. It is Jeanine. "This will be discussed in our meeting tomorrow."
We nodded. We would be in trouble. But at least it was postponed.
Curfew. Excuse the major time skip.
"Where did you guys go?"
This is the question everyone has been asking me all day. It was the last time I would hear it today, thankfully. It was time to go to bed. They would know tomorrow. We would have to spill for sure. Jeanine would find away to get it out of us somehow. I thought of the truth serum that was used in Candor to make it harder to lie. But that would be taking it a bit too far, right? Then again, Jeanine did seem like the type to use simulations to control people.
I sat on the edge of the bed Tris was laying on, the one we lied on for everyday we had been at Erudite Headquarters.
"Can I tell you something?" Tris sits up from her position, looking at me.
I nod. We haven't spoken for the rest of the day. "Of course."
"I didn't mean to be mean on the train, earlier." She said, biting her lip. "You were right."
I smirk widely.
She put a finger to my lips.
"Don't look so smug," She says. "I'm still mad at you."
I remove her finger slowly. "Why?" I ask, moving closer to her on the bed.
"Nothing." She said, shaking her head. "I'm going to bed."
She pulls the blanket over her shoulder, and she is out.
Today, it only takes me a few minutes to shower, I am the first in the main room.
The meeting starts when everybody enters, including the Erudite.
Jeanine Matthews stands in the center, as always. She clears her throat, and begins.
"We have found the missing Dauntless, they have decided to report back at our Headquarters, they are safe."
They thought we were missing? I didn't realize how many people it may have affected, how many people were interrogated, how many police were sent out after us.
All because we did not want to do the simulations.
"It turns out, they just wanted to leave." She announces. "Why? No one is sure. Perhaps they dislike our headquarters, perhaps they want to leave."
I hear murmuring around me. It just got serious. I knew where this conversation was going.
She wanted to kick us out.
She puts her fingers to her lips. "Quiet down." She removes her fingers as the room goes silent. "Dauntless, consider this strike one."
She looks at me when she says the next sentence. "Two more, and you're out."
I wipe the layer of sweat off of my head and grip the bowl tightly. I sigh and stand up.
I had just scrubbed a toilet clean at Erudite headquarters.
"How are you, over there?" I ask Uriah, who groans loudly.
"I'm not even close to finished." He sighs heavily. "Can you help me?"
I nod and walk into his stall.
Since we did not want to do the simulations, Jeanine made us work for the rest of the day. No pay.
And she wanted us and the Erudite to be treated equally.
Why were we being put under the simulation? Or scrubbing toilets?
It wasn't fair at all.
I was going to stand up to her. I was.
Uriah and I clean the toilet, and when we are done with all of the stalls, we move to the urinals. After we clean those, we place fresh urinal cakes in each of them. I am more than ready to step out of the restroom when I am done.
I dump my gloves into the nearest trashcan and wash my hands before continuing down the hall.
I sigh as the cool air hits my face. The chemicals from the spray in the bathroom were not very easy to breath in.
As I do, I get stares from around the room. I don't care. I wait for Uriah to come down the hall with me, but he doesn't. I look back. He was waiting outside of the girl's restroom. Waiting for Lynn and Tris. I walk back to him and stand next to the doorway. I would stand up to Jeanine later.
An Erudite woman gives us a look when she walks past us. I shrug. It wasn't a pleasant sight to see, two guys waiting outside of a girl's restroom. Lynn emerges from the bathroom, her hands over her stomach.
"The Erudite restroom," She begins. "isn't as clean as you think it might be."
I nod in agreement.
Lesson learned.
"Wanna ditch our jobs?" Uriah asks, biting his lip excitedly.
Lynn scoffs. "Are you serious?" She asks. "We're already in enough trouble."
I nod again. "She's right, it's too risky."
Uriah sucks his teeth. "You guys are no fun."
I laugh lightly. "Whatever."
Tris appears, a toilet brush in her hand. "Lynn, we need to get back to..." She trails off when she sees us, and drops the brush. "Hey," She says to me.
"Hey." I respond, rolling my lip.
I feel Uriah staring at me. He does not try to avoid the awkwardness in the moment.
"We're almost done." Tris says, turning her head around when she points to the bathroom.
I nod, looking at her. "We'll leave you to it."
They had back into the bathroom, and Uriah and I make conversation while we wait. I tell him I am going to walk around. He nods, and I walk down the hall.
When I reach a certain point of the hall, I trip over something that makes me fall on my stomach.
A foot.
I turn around to face who tripped me up.
When I did, I saw an Erudite man, his hair short and choppy. His hair is blonde, the same shade of his teeth. I squint at him.
"What's wrong with you?" I spit, standing up slowly.
He looks familiar, I remember him from somewhere, but at the same time, I don't. His face is in some place of my brain, but I can't find it.
"Hello, Peter." He says, his eyes narrowing.
He knows me. I am sure I remember him from somewhere.
Eric.
He looks like Eric.
Woah...I totally saw that coming. Peter's pretty smart, right? Sorry if this chapter isn't the best, I was rushing to update before I went to school.
Tris is being quite a mystery, huh? Why? You'll find out soon.
